BigChocFrenzy · 15/04/2020 22:43

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8 Smile

The 5:2 diet was introduced by Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850- 1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to mainitain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below if you need a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips

  • WATER: Start each day with a glass of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, but on FDs count any milk / sugar calories.
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back less than you burn. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.
Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid sugar or fruit juice. e.g. Stir-fries, soups & stews. Ready meals are OK.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs, optionally reduce to 700 cals gradually.
You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are fine.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting & Health

BBC article on the original Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

Fasting boosts "autophagy" = recycling of old cells
Yoshinori Ohsumi won the 2016 Nobel prize for Medicine for research into autophagy
NOBEL Lecture “Autophagy – An Intracellular Recycling System”

Prof. R Taylor (Newcastle Uni) won the 2013 Diabetes UK Banting Prize for his Twin Cycle Hypothesis re the cause of type 2 diabetes: Twin Cycle Hypothesis T2
and showed a fasting diet could reverse T2

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials (consecutive FDs) with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

HORMESIS & Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Applications: J CellMetabolism
Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson (Mosely referred to his research) showed:

. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Brain metabolism in health, aging, andneurodegeneration :
"lifestyles that include intermittent bioenergetic challenges, most notably exercise and dietary energy restriction, can increase the likelihood that the brain will function optimally and in the absence of disease throughout life"

He compared 5:2 to ordinary daily diets on overweight women with family history of breast cancer.
Fasting group lost more belly fat, retained more muscle & had slightly better blood sugar regulation.

More of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease

His article in J Aging Mech Disease 2015 explains the health benefits of intermittent fasting in great scientific detail.

Why intermittent fasting and stopping snacking can lower your risk of serious diseases:
Meal frequency and timing in health and disease

Fasting can help maintain brain health during aging:

NY Times Fasting Overview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Well done @devildeepbluesea that’s a fab start.
Happy birthday @homeschoolhell

I can’t believe it’s Friday already. This week has just flown by for me.
Fast day went well for me yesterday.
Today, I’m eating at 12,3 and 7. I’m going to try to stick to advice from @BigChocFrenzy and not snack at all. It’s such a bad habit and is the reason why I’m overweight.
All our meals are usually pretty healthy but I seem to turn to food quite often throughout the day.

spatchcock · 15/05/2020 09:20

@devildeepbluesea That is amazing - well done!!

homeschoolhell · 15/05/2020 09:31

Wow devil what an amazing SV!
Thanks gin and drifter

Weigh in today and 2lb loss 😃, so 5lb since I started 2 weeks ago, very happy with that! Looking forward to my birthday walk in the woods with a lovely picnic, then meal delivered from local restaurant tonight and of course some of the cake DH made me, I am skipping breakfast in anticipation of it all! Hope it doesn't result in 5lb back on Shock I wont let it but I will enjoy my birthday treats.

Good luck Friday fasters 😁

Waspie · 15/05/2020 09:54

Happy Birthday homeschool Cake Wine Hope you have a lovely day! Coffee & walnut is my favourite too Smile

Wow devil that's an incredible loss in a single week. Well done!

Well done emcla Could you try some veges instead of fruit? Maybe sweet peppers or cucumber? My dentist put me off fruit as she said it was bad for my teeth so I don't tend to eat much. Hope your FD goes well today.

Glad your fast day went well yesterday Interstellar. Mine was good too, although no weight loss. I blame all the VE toasting I did last weekend Grin

Good luck with the cake baking Gin. Please let me know how you get on as I'm considering baking a birthday cake for the first time ever too!

Good luck Friday fasters Flowers

Waspie · 15/05/2020 09:56

Congrats on your SV homeschool. What a lovely birthday present Smile

OohMrDarcy · 15/05/2020 10:10

Morning all

Congrats on all the lovely SVs!

FD2 for me today. I have a cuppa and my jug of water beside me (0.5 litre down already) and my meals planned. I'm going for a soup for lunch and then paprika grilled chicken and cauliflower cheese (pre portioned from supermarket) for dinner. Simplifies tomorrows dinner too as I can plate up ready and then just add some more bits to have with it.

Going to weigh in tomorrow but also Monday morning to keep me accountable over the weekend!

moonlight1705 · 15/05/2020 11:46

Wow amazing results devil and home what a nice boost for the weekend.

Happy birthday too home your plan for the day sounds lovely.

I'm weighing tomorrow too mrd hope yours goes well and we can celebrate then!

Having another mini today with soup for lunch and moussaka for dinner. I will be having a smaller piece and more salad than DH to fit in with a mini.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/05/2020 12:50

Happy Birthday homeschool 🎂💐

Congratulations on your SV, devil
Great start

Congratulations too, homeschool
That's good progress

Good luck, emcla, MrD, moonlight

emcla I like flaked almonds sprinkled with cinammon on banana or in Greek / Skyr plain yoghurt
You only need a tbsp as they go a long way - and no danger of breaking your gnashers.

That's a good plan, Drifter
Snacking is one of the worst habits that cause weight gain

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 15/05/2020 12:52

Never mind, Waspie
Focus this week - no more celebrating ! Grin- and you'll resume progress

OP posts:
Waspie · 15/05/2020 13:48

Yes I definitely ate back my week's lost calories last weekend BCF Blush I've been good this week though and I think I'm going to start logging everything in MFP religiously again for a while. I don't want to lose the good habits I've been trying to build.

OohMrDarcy · 15/05/2020 17:07

Kitchen closed for me on 450. Now sat with a peppermint tea and my water reading. Going to have a pampering evening later and an early night I think

ginsparkles · 15/05/2020 17:33

@Waspie cake went well! I'd post a pic but feel it would be unfair to those fasting today!! Confused

ListeningQuietly · 15/05/2020 18:03

Just dashing in to show BigChocFrenzy this study in case it had not been picked up already

devildeepbluesea · 15/05/2020 18:33

Evening all, just checking in to wish you all a great weekend. Well done to all Friday fasters. I've been pretty good on this NFD, just polished off a delicious and super healthy homemade chicken and veg kebabs and plain rice. Even DD thought it was ace.

However, pub quiz is in an hour so some alcohol will be consumed...

devildeepbluesea · 15/05/2020 18:33

Oh PS happy birthday @homeschoolhell

(Love the username, my thoughts exactly!)

OohMrDarcy · 15/05/2020 20:19

ooh happy birthday homeschoolhell!

emcla · 15/05/2020 21:28

Good idea big choc. Can’t afford to damage my chopping box ! I was thinking about almond milk as a treat. It’s supposed to be tasty, low cal and relatively nutritious. I don’t really like cows milk and thought it might be good for my old bones.

Well done to all Friday fasters. I’ve completed my fd and went for two walks, although they were at a leisurely pace. Better than nothing.

Have a great weekend everyone x

emcla · 15/05/2020 21:32

I eat lots of veg too waspie but that’s a good idea. Anyway I’ve had no fruit today so aim for way less next week.

I’m also doing a 90 day health kick. I’ve had no junk and am nearly at day 20 so might be a good time to cut down on the fruit.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/05/2020 22:47

Well done, MrD, emcla and any other Friday faster
That's a good 1st week back, MrD

Sounds a delic meal, devil and pretty healthy too

That's very considerate to the fasters, gin Grin
I'm sure miniGin will love it
Happy birthda to her

emcla That 90-day health kick sounds a brilliant idea
Almond or cashew milk are both v low cal, usually < 20 cals / 100 ml - do get the unsweetened kind
I get almond milk produced in the NL, in case you are concerned with the environmental side of almonds produced in California

Thanks for the heads up bigchoc. Going shopping tomorrow to get some.

OohMrDarcy · 16/05/2020 07:49

Morning all

Weighed in at 15st 4.4lbs which is a loss of 4.6lbs on the start of the week and means all the may weight gain is gone. On to April, as long as I lose it all in the same time I gained it (preferably a bit less) I'm not too worried as its during extraordinary times.

Gin very kind of you to hold of on the cake pics... do show us today though!

ginsparkles · 16/05/2020 08:04

Good morning! Well done on your SV @OohMrDarcy !!!

devildeepbluesea · 16/05/2020 08:28

Congratulations on your loss @OohMrDarcy that's great!

It's my rest day from exercise today, just a long walk with DD later on.

Anyone fasting today? Usually I'd consider Saturday fasting madness but these days it's all the same isn't it!

homeschoolhell · 16/05/2020 09:12

Thanks for all the birthday wishes everyone, I had a fab day, beautiful 2 hour walk to the woods and a picnic with fizz, then a lovely meal and cake for dinner, weirdly though for me I just couldn't eat very much, it felt too rich. I did manage some wine though :-)

Fantastic SV mrd well done 😁

Your nfd sounds lovely devil

Nfd for me today and I'm going to try and keep it light, good luck to the Saturday fasters 😁

moonlight1705 · 16/05/2020 09:23

Glad you had a lovely birthday home it sounds rather wonderful.

Well done mrd on getting that weight loss.

I've STS this week, I don't think minis are working for me so will go back to proper full FDs next week to shake it up a bit. Might try a back to back Tuesday / Wednesday and see what happens.
