Blood sugar diet and fast800 support thread #18

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/03/2020 17:03

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Evening everyone, hope your day went well. Day 32 for me and I'm closing the kitchen at 863 calories and 52g carbs.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/04/2020 07:31

@agteacht I don't think there really is low carb chocolate. Dark choc, even the really dark stuff, is still sugary, but I personally find the 70-90% dark really unpalatable anyway. I have never been a '2squares' person and if I'm going to eat chocolate, I want proper choc!

I had a crap day yesterday, just ate far too much. I think I'm losing my mojo a bit because I know it's Easter looming. Too much food around, too much sugar and carbs available. Yesterday my food was really good but the extras just creep in. I haven't weighed myself this morning as it won't be a good one!

Today: I'm off for a short run this morning, and will do my yoga later. I have been quite successfully fasting til 1pm every day so will do that again and probably will have a tuna salad for lunch. Dinner will be a chicken tikka masala with veg. But what is really key is that I try harder than I have been recently to not eat the other crap, and keep well away from the sugar (and the sausage rolls...)

Hi everyone. I just found this thread. I haven’t read it all yet (will start now), but just wanted to ask if anyone is diabetic and has been able to reverse their diabetes a few years after diagnosis? I’ve had it for almost 3 years. I was managing to control my sugar levels through diet alone, but have had a terrible couple of years and have really let things go. I’ve buried my head in the sand and ignored my diabetes. I’ve been feeling really down about a lot of things, and am now worried about coronavirus and being diabetic. Do you think I could still reverse my diabetes?

agteacht · 10/04/2020 10:09

Agh I've inexplicably put on a pound. No change to what I was doing. Typical :(

Hey @browneyedgirl2018 I'm not diabetic but I have read that this is possible.

NathanNathan · 10/04/2020 10:29

That's definitely a blip @agteacht, I'd ignore

@thenewaveragebear1983 from reading the threads I can see you've been doing this consistently and well for so long! Definitely don't think you should get down about some slack every now and then, you're inspirational.

From my re read of the book I'm getting much more focused. More fibre needed, so more veg.

Also trying to get protein up, does anyone use shakes? I'm largely vegetarian but have been having some meat to help. Also made a delicious Dahl last night.

@browneyedgirl if you've not read the 8 week blood sugar diet book this is based on I really recommend it. Lots of science behind how this can reverse type 2 diabetes and case studies of people who actually did it.

NathanNathan · 10/04/2020 10:30

Thanks for the Obseity Code recommendation @agteacht, I read some stuff online about it, does Fung have much difference in opinion to Michael Moseley? Seems to be same principles.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/04/2020 10:58

@NathanNathan thanks. I think Fung and Mosley are quite similar (In fact they both cite each other #bromance Grin) but the Fung book is a more in depth look at how it works. They go hand in hand really.

@browneyedgirl2018 I would definitely read the blood sugar diet book; essentially the two are very similar but the fast800 is more universal as a weight loss plan whereas the BSD was originally written to reverse T2 diabetes. It's definitely possible.

Thanks all for your kind words. I suppose because technically I am in maintenance I get very worried about piling weight on if I take my eye off the ball. I'm going to enjoy this weekend though and then get back on it!

Just been to Sainsbury's, standing in a queue of 100 just to get in! However we now have fresh food. Bought a disposable bbq so we will have burgers for lunch with salad, and dinner will still be chicken.

Hope everyone has a lovely Easter weekend despite the craziness!

NathanNathan · 10/04/2020 12:15

Completely understandable about the worry bear but I think you've got this under control Smile

Haha on the #bromance, that makes sense about more detail in Fung, will have a read.

bluepixie · 10/04/2020 13:00

@agteacht sorry about the one pound gain. Just keep going. Don’t make my Mistake. I lost 9 pounds and then kept going up and down and not weighed for a bit coz I don’t want to be upset haha! Have still got my cold so date night is off...no point drinking wine and having a 3 course dinner if can’t enjoy it! ..so least I can be super good for a longer
Must be in tens next week!

I have 90 percent Lindt in my kitchen. I’m ok with just having a tiny bit...

Enjoy the sun everyone. Reporting my weight on Monday xx

bluepixie · 10/04/2020 18:22

Everyone wanted pizza tonight! So I made one with lo dough base. It was excellent! 39 cals and 2g carbs per base. I topped it with tomatoes cheese red onion was delicious and low carb and I didn’t miss out.

Highly recommend (very exp though but not as exp as a take away pizza!)

bluepixie · 10/04/2020 18:22

(By everyone I mean my son and hubby not having a secret party!)

agteacht · 10/04/2020 20:57

Oh @Cream123 just looked those up, I'll have to get some! But to get free shipping it's £30 spend which is a lot of pizza bases 😂

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/04/2020 22:26

They look amazing @Cream123. It seems you can order on amazon without such a hefty delivery charge (although still works out £5 for 2 bases!)

Hi all

I've been looking for a recipe for a porridge replacement to try and found this on the sugarfreelondoner site (which has some great recipes by the way!)

But I don't understand the carb count, don't know if anyone can help me figure it out, link here:

sugarfreelondoner.com/keto-oatmeal/#wprm-recipe-container-15603

The recipe at the bottom says 12.6g carbs and just above it 4.1g net carbs. Which as I understand it is the total carbs minus the fibre. Do I count the total carbs? It's a UK rather than a US site which has confused me.

bluepixie · 11/04/2020 07:40

I do total carbs
Atkins And keto do net I know as they say fibre minused as not digested
Last night was 950 20g carbs
Need to lower the cals!

bluepixie · 11/04/2020 08:01

Ps yes they so exp! But they did hit my spot! It’s first time I’ve tried them and I think I’m hooked!!! Oh dear :/

agteacht · 11/04/2020 08:28

Ah okay maybe it's because it's a keto recipe... I've been doing total carbs but that confused me. Thank you!!

Good find on the two pack of pizza bases bear, I have ordered two from amazon to try them out before I commit to a 24 pack 😂

agteacht · 11/04/2020 08:29

PS great carb count yesterday @Cream123 !!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/04/2020 09:24

Most uk packaging has the fibre already deducted, so net carbs, plus fibre grams included separately. Be mindful when adding things to your trackers and if you use American products and/or trackers as they deduct fibre grams from carb grams (even if you add a uk product when they are already deducted iyswim)

I use fat secret set to UK mode so my daily carbs total is always the net total.

I'm going to order some Lo-dough bases I think, just to try them

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/04/2020 09:26

Not sure with recipes especially keto or American ones though

OP posts:
agteacht · 11/04/2020 10:15

I'll put each item in as a recipe and see how that works in MFP. I'll have a look at FatSecret as would be good to be sure the carbs were net.

bluepixie · 11/04/2020 12:37

They r a bit spong the lodough! But they hit my pizza craving and I didn’t feel left out!

Carbs mega low yest as I ate a lot of cheese !! Not very healthy but fine as a one off! I find if I have lots of salad and veg I can’t get below 40g but that fine with me!
Aiming for 850 and 30 carbs today !

bluepixie · 11/04/2020 13:02

Spongy!

Ps craving a Diet Coke in the sun. I know sweetners r bad but better than a wine!

agteacht · 11/04/2020 13:06

I haven't managed to kick sugar free pop yet... one step at a time!!!

bluepixie · 11/04/2020 17:08

An early close to kitchen at
950 cals and 30g carbs. I just can’t do 800!!!!
I actually would have been ok but I had a halo top icecream which I bought in the sale on Ocado they again have sweetners in but it’s so warm and I was dying for a glass of rose and a magnum but I resisted and went for the Halton. It’s 80 cals but 10g of carbs! Luckily I had a very low carb day with
Greek yog and some berries in am
Chicken and brocolli stir fry
Salmon and Philadelphia sandwhich in low carb bread! (Was yum)
