Blood sugar diet and fast800 support thread #18

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

You're all doing so well. I'm doing okay but not exactly trying to be perfect so I have no idea what I've eaten. Dh is cooking tonight (bolognese) and he gets annoyed if I 'help' because he can't cook at all so in the 2 mins walking from garden to kitchen I've had to point out that it's best to tip some of the fat away, it's best not to use a ham stock cube, and Also could he please use a tin of toms rather than use up all my fresh tomatoes so I don't have to go back to Sainsbury's too soon. So my dinner will be horrible probably. I think he thinks he's a contestant on ready steady cook and not just trying to make a basic meal for the family that they'll actually eat.

I'm in a shit mood today which doesn't help. I'm tired, I'm bored, I'm feeling crap for eating crap but the same again I'm not going to restart til Monday! Plus having this weird mid-cycle bleed which I've now had for a week, so possibly a bit hormonal.

I have an Easter egg for tomorrow so there isn't much point in trying too hard til after that's gone!

I'm contemplating doing homemade shakes next week as my lunch and then having just evening meal. I can make a decent shake for 200 cals that's quite high in fat and protein and very little carbs, and I know then that for 600 cals I can have a decent size meal plus probably yogurt and berries too and come in under 800. I really feel like I've spiralled off piste now and need to do something different to rein myself in!

@thenewaveragebear1983 don't knock yourself, you have done amazingly. And the best bit is you know how to manage it ongoing (unlike the rest of us - well me at least!! - yet!)

So it's okay to slip up sometimes. A few days back on it and you will be back to where you want to be. And anyway the benefit of isolation is no one can see us for those few days in between 😂

bluepixie · 11/04/2020 19:54

Yes @thenewaveragebear1983 u have done amazingly don’t be hard on yourself.
I’ve not done great at all. I’ve lost 9, then put 3 on, lost them, put them back on. It’s a right pain. And I’m very cross at myself!!!
Anyways will weigh in tmrw!

Which shakes do u make? I might copy u I like a shake on the way to work !

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/04/2020 20:16

I invent my own @Cream123.
I use: chia seeds soaked in green tea (make green tea strong in a cup then soak a tbsp chia overnight to get the gloop), 50g frozen raspberries (can use other berries but I find raspberries are the best), almond milk or soy milk, handful of spinach or kale, tbsp peanut butter powder, tbsp Maca powder, and after having them a few days and detoxing off sugar I will add a tbsp olive oil too.
They aren't sweet at all but I find it quite palatable and once I am detoxed off the sugar the 50g raspberries is usually enough.

With the oil too it's 333 cals (approx) so it is a proper meal replacement, but I do find them filling.

OP posts:
bluepixie · 11/04/2020 20:59

It doesn’t very tasty! Was hoping u would say
Chocolate bannaa peanut butter and some vanilla icecream!
May try it though I have it all minus the matcha!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/04/2020 21:52

It's maca powder, not matcha tea (not sure if that's a typo or not). To be honest I have never done the flavoured shakes because I find that they make me want carbs. You could use more fruit at first until you get used to the flavour? Or add cocoa powder?

OP posts:
bluepixie · 11/04/2020 22:20

Ah I misread it! Yeah maybe cocoa powder I have that in.
Hope I’ve lost tmrw and about / am in tens.
I hate this watching what you eat - it’s so boring!!!!

CiorstanMI · 12/04/2020 11:19

Happy Easter to everyone - I hope you're all having as nice a weekend as possible under the circumstances. I think this is the first time I've not spent Easter eating too much chocolate (my Easter egg never lasts more than 24 hours Grin).

Was horribly busy at work on Friday and finished very late so didn't record my daily total and then forgot to do it yesterday as well. I feel it's definitely one of the things that's keeping me honest so I mustn't get out of the habit. So:

Day 33 (Friday): 851 cals, 37g carbs
Day 34 (Saturday) : 802 cals, 40g carbs

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/04/2020 13:25

@CiorstanMI you are doing so well, I'm genuinely in awe of your determination.

I weighed myself today after my run (I did 15.5km), and after having water and coffee so not really a true weigh in, and I was 10.6.8 so imagine in real terms that means I'm a few pounds up from my lightest. Is it deserved? Oh yes. In fact, I probably deserve more!

Have a great Easter Day everyone.

OP posts:
bluepixie · 12/04/2020 13:32

Yes ciorstan it’s amazing! Can’t bel u haven’t fallen off once!!! How much have u lost now
Amazing willpower can u send some to me!

Had hummus and grilled courgettes mushrooms and tomatoes for lunch was lovely and filling!

Dinner is a chicken tikka marinate with cauliflower rice on side
I’m trying very hard to do 800 today

Don’t worry badger maintaining is the hardest u have lost so much and in healthy weight range. It’s an unusual time too atm I think u are doing great! Hope ur mood is better today!!!

agteacht · 12/04/2020 16:41

I echo that @CiorstanMI your resolve is something else.

Some Easter egg has been consumed here... hopefully not too much damage done. Roast chicken and veggies for tea.

bluepixie · 12/04/2020 17:09

Closed 850 and 30g carbs.

DareDevil223 · 12/04/2020 18:53

Day 1 tomorrow, this has worked for me before but I fell off the wagon (and set fire to it) and let my weight go back up and my eating get out of control. I tried WW again which has worked in the past but I need to change what I eat as well as the amount. So many processed carbs and low fat shit, it just makes me feel bloated and ill.

I'm not proud of the state I'm in but I hope that this way of eating will help me to feel better mentally and physically as well as shed some of this weight fast.

whensmynexthol1day · 12/04/2020 19:32

Finished on 913 kcal and 39g carbs. Pretty bad day nutrition wise, but suffering terrible hay fever so just ate what I fancied today:
Lunch- tuna mayo and sweetcorn with 3 celery sticks
Dinner - 3 heck chicken sausages and 2 fried eggs
Snack - half a choc cupcake I made with the kids (oops!)

I tried low carbing for a while and did well until portion sizes started to get a bit out of control. Two things I like about this diet:

I can eat some sweetcorn or other carby veg without feeling too guilty - I've never made it above 50g carbs on 800 or 900kcal even with a few carby things now and then

Even if you eat a couple of hundred calories over now and then it's still a pretty low calorie diet so I still lose every week even though it might be a bit slower than it might have otherwise have been - feels much more sustainable!

Itshotoday · 12/04/2020 19:45

Hi folks, I was wondering do you eat unlimited non carb veg or are you including this in your total kcal?

I’m An imposter I’m not doing fast800 but curious!

CiorstanMI · 12/04/2020 21:02

Well, after all those kind words about my resolve I've not done quite so well today Grin and have bust the carbs ceiling. However it's really not too bad, 878 cals and 60g carbs.

I've completed 5 weeks now and have lost 7.2kg (just under 16lb). I'm determined to complete the 8 weeks without slipping up. 🤞

bluepixie · 12/04/2020 21:23

Hardly a slip!!!
Wow well done ciorstan!!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/04/2020 21:58

@DareDevil223 me too, day 1 for me tomorrow!

@Itshotoday if (when?) I actually stick to the plan and count cals and carbs, I count everything even veg. I know some do not count the green leafy veg and still have good results though

OP posts:
bluepixie · 12/04/2020 22:23

I count everything too! It makes it hard to stay in low carbs so I stick to green veg with some tomatoes thrown in!

CaptainBrickbeard · 13/04/2020 08:29

I got a 70% dark chocolate Easter egg yesterday and nibbled away on that all day, also ate a roast lamb dinner - all low carb and lots of veg but accompanied with wine. But still, I am miraculously in a new stone bracket this morning and six years after my youngest was born, I have finally lost the baby weight! I’m lighter than I have been in all that time!

Kimlek · 13/04/2020 08:45

Morning all and a happy Easter!
You’ve all been doing so incredibly well & still counting and still staying focused!! 👏🏻
Since 22nd March, think that is 3 weeks, I’ve been eating a little of what I fancy and drinking a fair amount. I’ve not counted cals or carbs but I have very roughly planned meals. My goal was/is to stay around the 11st mark.
I was 10.11.6 on 22 March and am 10.11.0 today! So there’s actually been a very very small weight loss. And no creeping up to 11st after all! Who’d have thought it?
Although my ultimate aim is a straight 10st, Whilst in lockdown I’m going to continue being kind, enjoying G&T’s, the odd ice cream, I even had a slice of tiger bread the other day... but try to maintain 10.11.0. I’ll get strict another day.

Kimlek · 13/04/2020 08:47

Well done @CaptainBrickbeard a new Stone bracket is such a big deal and a thrill. So pleased for you!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/04/2020 08:52

@CaptainBrickbeard woohoo!! Well done StarStarStarStarStar

I'm a few several pounds up today and I feel meh. Drank too much last night, ate too much chocolate. Healthy day 1 for me today. I know some is water retention as I did a long run yesterday and today am stiff as a board, so hopefully that will subside once I start moving about!

Housework and tidying today for me, the house is a tip! Have a great day everyone

OP posts:
bluepixie · 13/04/2020 08:59

Well done @CaptainBrickbeard wonderful feeling I bet!!!

I’m still not in New stone bracket . Meh. Hopefully another day or 2....am nearly there! My body “likes” to be this weight so it’s hard to get less but really it’s my occasional binge which. Has thrown me off. U girls making me feel focussed so I’ll keep going!

Well done @Kimlek that’s great - ur enjoying urself but also slowly loosing. That’s the ideal really. I need to be able to do that. If I open the ice cream tub - it’s al gone!

Just had a lovely bicher museli home made. So no more carbs rest of day. Was very filling as chia seeds and full fat yoghurt.
Should manage 850 and 30 carbs fingers crossed
Off for my one walk a day!
