Blood sugar diet thread 13

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Had two days of sheer gluttony and feel rather doughy and unhealthy today, although I did run 10km yesterday morning. Today I'm quite looking forward to eating lighter and getting some fresh food in, and perhaps not drinking quite so much! Off to town with dd for some browsing!

Hope everyone is well and having fun. I weighed this morning and have gained 3 lbs, many many roast pots in goose fat, large helpings, cheese and wine. All very predictable. We still have lots of food so another solid day of eating ahead and then possibly start thinking of BSD again.

notapizzaeater · 27/12/2018 14:43

I've got the 8 week book and the recipe book for Xmas, I intend jumping on board in 2nd Jan

APlaceAtTheBSDTable · 27/12/2018 15:02

Happy Christmas everyone! bear your cake is so pretty!
Probably for the first time ever, I've lost weight over Christmas. I've also signed back up for lessons in one of the sports that I had to give up last year (because of my fall). I'm not sure if I will be able to do it again because of my back/hip but I'm going to try it in Jan.
If I have to rule out returning to it then I'll need to find something else. I'm determined 2019 won't be as sedentary as 2018 even though I still can't walk very far. This may be the year, I have to return to swimming instead I am a rubbish swimmer

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/12/2018 09:56

Hi everyone. Had a cheeky weigh in this morning and I'm up a pound, which is bloody brilliant considering the time of year so I'll take that!

We have my family coming today to exchange presents, buffet lunch, probably wine. And then I'm rather looking forward to having a few alcohol free days before new year. While it will be possible to BSD at lunch with cheese, meat, salad, it's looking unlikely!!!

Well done APlace and Bear! I am now just 2 lbs up (no roast pots yesterday and lost a bit!). Not sure what's on the menu today, DH is doing the shopping. Have to sit eldest down to discuss homework that needs doing.

onanothertrain · 28/12/2018 14:14

Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas.
I think I've done quite well food wise considering its Christmas. Way too much alcohol though but managed to exercise every day and even ran on Christmas day.

adamnfinecupofcoffee · 29/12/2018 06:09

Hello!

Can I join in please? 3rd day of the BSD and plan to do the 800 cals for 8 weeks...have my sister's wedding in exactly 8 weeks and need to fit into my bridesmaid dress Blush

I'm finding giving up my morning cappuccino realllly hard- almond milk just isn't the same....think I'm just going to hit the nail on the head and cut out the milk completely.

This thread is really inspiring, thanks all!!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/12/2018 08:07

Hi all, welcome* to adamnfinecupofcoffee*! I'm impressed that you're on day 3, you started boxing day?

I am so looking forward to a few healthier days now. There's been far too much sugar, yesterday was the worst day of them all (I ate Christmas pud and brandy custard for dinner- not dessert, my actual dinner!) so today i'm going to reset myself with a few hours not eating, Something light for dinner, A run at 6.30 with my friend, and No Alcohol.

Adamn you can have your milk in your coffee, or cream. Just count the calories. I measure out my 100ml into a cup so I only use that, it's about 50 cals, and I get about 2/3 cups from it.

Not sure what's going on with my bold text there!

Hi all, I'm back and feeling sheepish. Been 'off plan since a week or so before xmas' and feeling pretty much back to square one after a couple of weeks of carb overload Blush. I need to start again but have been finding it tough. Need the support of the group. IRL everyone is stuffing themselves and staying slim, I need to remember that I can't do that. Smile

adamnfinecupofcoffee · 29/12/2018 16:55

Thenewrage thank you!

Good to know about the milk in coffee- MyFitnessPal has been saying my tiny cappuccino was 150 cals? I'll start measuring for sure! I like your cals better Wink

Currently drinking gallons of green tea to stop myself picking at the kids dinner- it's amazing how many times I've just gone to pick up a chip etc without even thinking!

Made a batch of red pepper and butternut squash from the BSD 8 week recipe book and it's very nice with some fried cubes of hallumi !

adamnfinecupofcoffee · 29/12/2018 16:56

From we can do this together!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/12/2018 18:05

Adamn Do you make them yourself? Some of those coffee pod things are made with sugar in and they are powdered milk, but 100 ml of regular semi skimmed is 49 calories.

Today was going well but I just ate a slice of Christmas cake, although I'm now off out running so should be ok!

OP posts:
adamnfinecupofcoffee · 30/12/2018 09:12

Good point about the pods- just checked my Lidl pods and they are just espresso- measured out my 100mls of semi milk too!

I've got the shakes really bad today.....feeling awful. I know I've got to power through but all I want to do is sleep (impossible with two kids!)

certainlymerry · 30/12/2018 09:16

I need some help with this approach as i can't think what to eat. I don't particularly like eggs, so what do I have for breakfast? Trying to cut down on meat which I don't really like either! Can anyone inspire me with ideas/recipes? I am borderline type 2 diabetes and need to lose about four stones. I don't snack or eat many sweet things, and don't like eating crap - I just eat too much I think .

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/12/2018 09:40

Certainly for breakfast/brunch I often have bacon and avocado and cheese. I'm not a huge fan of eggs either, although I do sometimes have 2 dry fried eggs as my lunch if I'm struggling for ideas. A lot of us only have 2 meals a day so maybe abandon traditional ideas for breakfast and have an early lunch?

My typical menu, in fact my planned menu for tomorrow:
Brunch:Bacon, 1/2 avocado and cheese.
Dinner: chicken marinated and cooked in coconut milk and tandoori spices, roasted cauliflower. Greek yoghurt and berries.

Weighed in at 10.4 this morning, meaning I'm pretty much maintained over Christmas (gain of 1lb total) - very very pleased with that. I put it down entirely to running and drinking water throughout the days even when my food has been awful!

OP posts:
certainlymerry · 30/12/2018 09:52

Ooh, I would love the recipe for chicken! That sounds mouthwatering!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/12/2018 10:46

Certainly it's sooooo easy. I just get chicken thigh fillets, cut them up into chunky pieces. Get a few tablespoons of full fat yogurt or the creamy top off the coconut milk and a few tablespoons of spice mix (I use tandoori but you could use korma, or a spicier one) and mix them together in your cooking dish, then stir in the chicken pieces and coat them all. Leave in the fridge for a few hours, then just oven bake it until all the marinade is dried out and the chicken is cooked. It goes watery looking, then dries out. It's one of our favourites!

It's really nice with cauliflower cooked in it, or you can do a veggie only version with butternut, cauliflower, peppers etc.
The coconut milk also works well with lemon grass, lime zest, chilli etc for an Asian inspired one!

fromnowhere · 30/12/2018 14:26

Adam thanks I need moral support as I'm so easily led astray! I love carbs so much, I find it hard, but this way of eating really does work for me when I stick at it.

Certainly I find breakfast hard too. I'm pescetarian so don't eat meat. I do have eggs when I have time, but I often skip breakfast as I find it hard not to have toast with butter. Easier to skip entirely. Sometimes I have a coffee just to feel like I've had something.

certainlymerry · 30/12/2018 16:22

Thank you for that recipe newaveragebear! Looks great!

Awks · 30/12/2018 21:30

Is anyone menopausal and doing this diet ? I need to drop 2 stone as my knees are hurting and I look like crap and this seems a way of re booting my eating !

Do you think it works for older people like me - I'm 53?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/12/2018 23:06

Awks it works for everyone, if you work it. Cheesy I know when your hormones are in flux (pregnancy, menopause, etc) your insulin control is the first thing to go haywire

OP posts:
notapizzaeater · 31/12/2018 00:16

I'm 51 nearly 52 and had a hysterectomy 4 years ago, I will let you know next week 😀😀😀

Westwing1 · 31/12/2018 12:13

Hi Awks, I am 51 and have lost 25 lbs using BSD, started 1st Jan 2018, my BMI is 21. I have some menopause symptoms for sure but still monthly periods. I am mainly maintaining now, there is still a layer of fat around my middle so I think I need to do some exercise (very lazy) in 2019 and get some muscle tone.
