Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Well done bear! Great result!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/12/2018 09:55

Went to a wedding yesterday so it was a planned day off, god knows how many calories or carbs we consumed but there was definitely cake, alcohol, 2 desserts and pizza once we got home. And I feel it today!!

Don't feel too delicate or hungover though which is good, so I'm not hitting the fried breakfast, just going to have a nice healthy day!

OP posts:
luckylips · 16/12/2018 16:27

I'm finding it so hard at this time of year! So much picking and nice food around!

PenelopeFlintstone · 17/12/2018 02:58

Hi All, I'm jumping on to this thread please. I think I may have joined before but, well, you know....Blush
I'm joining now and 100% committed because I'm just about to exceed a mental weight point and will be beyond gutted if that happens. It's the 100kg mark (16 stone).
My problem is that I don't mind not eating but I don't want to give away my daily coffee, often two but never more, with 2 teaspoons of sugar in each. It's 2pm in the afternoon here and I'm absolutely fine having only had those two coffees. I know it's not exactly the diet but it's still less carbs than the original Newcastle Uni research with the two diet shakes, I think. Is that right?
Then healthy low-carb food for the rest of the day. What do you think? Thanks Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/12/2018 08:18

Morning! I have regained a few this weekend, too much alcohol and rubbish food.

Penelope you can keep your coffee, however- you might find that the sugar affects your cravings all day. Plus you'll never get to that lovely state of being 'fat adapted' which is when you're burning fat for fuel, because you'll always have that little glucose hit first thing. Would you be able to switch to sweetener? I had sweeteners for a year before finally cutting them out and now I don't notice it, but I did have to phase it out gradually. I was scared of losing my only 'treat'.

Westwing1 · 17/12/2018 10:24

Morning, weighed and have gained 1.5 lbs, cheese/crackers/Sunday roast potatoes and wine, didn't go mad but it all adds up. The plan is to have 3 strict 800 kc days, drinks on Thursday evening and want to be back at goal by then.

Hi Penelope, welcome, I have 2 milky coffees every day (no sugar though). Do you have the BSD book, I find it very helpful in keeping me on track, simple receipes and tips.

PenelopeFlintstone · 17/12/2018 10:51

Hi Averagebear - Yes, I do feel like it's my treat! I've tried every sweetener and they're alright in tea but I can't stand them in coffee. I saw someone drinking a diet coke for breakfast once and was a bit shocked but I might have something like that instead of my coffee. Pepsi Max.
And I'll look up the term 'fat adapted' in a sec but, yes, I also was thinking I was stopping any fat burning as soon as I got up and drank that sugary coffee. I didn't seem to have cravings though; maybe that's because I held out till 12.30 and then had another coffee?

Hi Westwing - yes, I do have the book on loan from a colleague. I've read it twice but I'll be giving it back to him soon in case he and his wife have a weight loss New Years Resolution.

Thanks for the welcomes :)

I came in at 756 calories on my first day but that's 73g carbs mostly from sugars and 3/4 cup cooked rice - dinner was decided before I decided to do this. I'm still feeling optimistic Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/12/2018 11:43

Penelope fat adapted is when it starts to get easier- it's when your cravings all subside and your insulin is nice and balanced, and everything just goes really calm and food stops being on your mind all the time!! I'm sure there's a scientific term/reasoning for it but anyone who has done low carb and experiences it will constantly seek to get it back!
Do you drink herbal teas? Maybe a herbal tea first thing to break the habit?

OP posts:
PenelopeFlintstone · 17/12/2018 20:18

I think I like the caffeine hit Grin I'll buy a box of Pepsi Max cans later and start with those tomorrow. I live a bit rural and am drinking my sugared coffee now (If you're wondering why my morning coffee is at a strange time, it's because I'm English but in Oz Smile )
Thanks for your comments; I appreciate them.
Now I know this isn't real weight loss but yesterday the scales read 99.6kgs and I freaked! Today they say 98kgs. I know it's just the scales but I really do not want to go over that 100kg mark, so I felt very relieved this morning.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/12/2018 21:16

Penelope it's water, but the water has to go somewhere first so it is real weightloss! Silly question, but have you tried the coffee without sugar? I honestly thought I'd never drink it again, but I just stopped adding sweetex one day and now I genuinely don't miss it. Could you phase it out half a spoon at a time?

I've had a pretty good day. I haven't had any sugar, had ham and avocado for lunch and slow cooked beef with half a baked potato and loads of veg for dinner. I didn't have any cravings for sweet stuff which is a surprise as I ate so much this weekend! Hopefully this will continue all week!

OP posts:
luckylips · 17/12/2018 21:21

Well done @PenelopeFlintstone! Keep going

Good day for me - fruit for breakfast, soup for lunch and dinner was beef casserole. I did have 2 chocolates and some tortilla chips at work but that's minor compared to what was on offer in the staff room!

PenelopeFlintstone · 17/12/2018 22:41

thenewaveragebear1983 - not a silly question - I haven't!!
Could you phase it out half a spoon at a time? I'll definitely maybe think about giving it some consideration Grin - I just love it the way it is!! pathetic Btw, ham and avocado are two of my favourite things. Your food today sounds delicious.

Thanks Luckylips - my scales do fluctuate quite a bit but I'm just glad they fluctuated in the right direction. Great restraint shown at your workplace Smile

PenelopeFlintstone · 18/12/2018 04:40

It's 3.38pm here and I've only got 165 calories left for the day Shock It doesn't take much to use them up!! Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/12/2018 07:23

Penelope if it was me, I'd get Christmas over with, then In the big January health kick they do that in Oz too, right?! I'd either cut it down or cut it out. Because your sweet tastes will change so much, you might find it becomes too sweet anyway, but you'll adjust quite quickly to the new, less sweet, taste. I totally understand, I clung on to my two sweeteners for ages, I couldn't bear the thought of 'losing' my only treat, but I really really don't miss it now. In fact someone gave me some sugar free caramel coffee syrup to make lattes with, and 1tsp of it was so sweet I couldn't drink it. Your tastes really do change.

I'd lost a few pounds of my weekend bloat this morning, obviously only water, but I am very prone to water retention if I eat a lot of carbs so Sunday's scales were quite scary! Hoping for another nice low carb day today. Going to a Christmas Fayre with Ds this morning and then my circuits class this evening.

OP posts:
luckylips · 18/12/2018 19:27

I was doing so well until my DH made gammon and fresh bread and I couldn't resist a small roll and a slice of gammon after my very low cal chicken and greens soup!

There is so much food at work, I am managing to resist which I am quite proud of.

luckylips · 18/12/2018 19:28

Another one who used to have 2 sweeteners in my drinks but cut them out about 5 years ago when I read about how bad they were for you. You'll be surprised how quickly you adapt and your tastes change. Can't bear sweet drinks now!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/12/2018 17:59

I was down to 10.2.6 again this morning, that's the weekend bloat all gone! Then today I have had another reasonable day, had chicken curry and salad for lunch and pork chop and peas for dinner.

I also iced my Christmas cake, with only a very small sample of royal icing, purely for quality control purposes

It's my 'do' tomorrow, although I have already ordered my meal and went for starter + main and no dessert. I'll probably have one or two glasses of red though, so will shoot for a nice low carb day tomorrow to compensate.

Oh, and thought I'd add- if anyone's been asked for gift suggestions and doesn't know what to ask for, the Paul McKenna sugar programme (book and cd, with audio download available) is very good. I have listened to the hypno track twice now, and considering this is usually my carb crazy week as I'm due on, I've been surprisingly calm about sugar today. Even tasting that royal icing would normally have sent me over the edge, but it didn't.

Westwing1 · 21/12/2018 12:47

Hi everyone, I've never dieted over Christmas before, bit of a funny one isn't it. Our fridge is full of fancy food. I need to give some thought of next few days and have some guidelines. Looking back over December so far I have kept between 9st and 9 st 3lbs. I love the big meals and cheeses (no sweet tooth) but don't really want to gain half a stone which I could very easily. I am thinking of a no carbs except roast potatoes and stuffing rule. I haven't exercised once in December, very poor. Today is scrambled eggs for lunch, steak and veg for dinner. How is everyone?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/12/2018 13:21

Hi west! My Christmas plans are looking something like this:

Have some but not all. On plan when I can, without 'missing out'
Continue to avoid the bread, pasta, potatoes, rice and cereals. I will probably have a roastie or two, but otherwise I've planned my Christmas menu to avoid the things I want to avoid.
Sweet stuff is my absolute nemesis, but I'm trying to say no unless I really really want/need it. I am also reminding myself that I do actually have some self control and that one mince pie does not mean I therefore have to have everything else as well.
Keeping hydrated is a key thing for me, as is getting enough sleep, so I endeavour to do both all through the Christmas week.

I'm keeping up my exercise, the only day I am definitely NOT running is Christmas Day.

We have a busy schedule from now on in, Dh's works do tonight, various family things, Christmas Eve mulled wine and mince pies and carols, Xmas day obviously, Boxing Day meal with Dh's family and my family on 28th. It's a balancing act isn't it? To be honest the worse thing for me is the drinking, it destroys my resolve and that starts the slippery slope.

If I can get to new year on a 3lb gain I'd be delighted, so I'm keeping that in my mind.

OP posts:
Westwing1 · 21/12/2018 16:23

Thanks Bear that is very helpful. As it is just kids, DH and me things are much easier here. No one to offend if I don't eat Christmas pudding etc. We will be eating way more meat than usual, fresh fish soon won't be available until 3rd or 4th Jan from our fish monger, I expect that will cause a weight gain too.

Right, I will stick to roast pots and stuffing which I adore, avoid all other carbs, try to get lots of sleep and finally try not to get sozzled every night. It's a plan.

luckylips · 21/12/2018 18:32

I'm afraid I haven't stuck to it today or yesterday!

My plan over Xmas is to enjoy myself but not too much and not go over 11st.

I will probably have to start the 8 weeks all over again on Jan 1st! 😆

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/12/2018 20:05

I'm doing okay, I have had no sugar (yet) and I've been pretty good at mealtimes and haven't snacked, although I have had things like a few crisps or crackers with my lunch, for example. I'm trying hard to stay hydrated, drinking a lot of water. I ran a 10km trail race today which was really challenging actually, and tomorrow morning i'm running a short one with a friend.

So a reasonable effort, not too bad considering!
