Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Disaster here too, too much Christmas cheer, I reckon 2,000 kc easily, had a lovely evening with a good friend. Carb heavy no greens. Tomorrow is another day.

APlaceAtTheBSDTable · 10/12/2018 22:52

I was working from home today and made the mistake of working through lunch which meant when DH brought in crisps at 5pm, I pounced on them and then just ate constantly from that point on. I haven't even bothered calorie counting . Confused I'm going to be more organised tomorrow.

luckylips · 11/12/2018 11:03

Good day yesterday but it's so difficult at this time of year!

fromnowhere · 11/12/2018 18:14

So I had my weekend with family which was (as predicted) a carb fest!
I haven't managed to get hold of myself since then. So am shopping tonight and batch cooking when the kids go to bed so I can stop making excuses! It's been so hard to lose this little bit of weight, I can't give up now! Confused

Westwing1 · 11/12/2018 20:58

Better today, I have eaten lots of small cheese snacks, pile of greens, some carbs but not too bad, finding it hard. Eating a little dark chocolate now and I don't have a sweet tooth. Have realised my period is due today which would explain a lot. I am so frustrated with myself to be age 51 and still surprised and undone by a monthly event. My only excuse is I have PCOS and so only started to be regular after having children. But my eldest is about to turn 15 so it's not much of an excuse. Frustrated with myself. Am I right in thinking there are apps to track you period? I am clueless with tech but I would like to try one and be able to help my DD when the time comes for her. Any tips very welcome.

APlace I completely understand, I cannot have crisps in the house (luckily my kids aren't drawn to them), it is a family joke that I will just eat them all. Cakes and biscuits are safe but I cannot resist crisps. Hope everyone is ok and keep on trying.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/12/2018 21:20

Much better day today. Stopped myself just eating mindlessly and drank water instead! Got a few recipe books from the library for some inspiration for the next few weeks and into January.

Not sure of cals or carbs but I feel that I’ve won the day today not lost it, so I’m taking that. Done 14k steps, Including a really strenuous circuits class.

West there are apps you can use to track your cycle, I have pcos too so I’ve used various ones over the years. Currently I have it as a part of my Fitbit app if you have one?

OP posts:
Westwing1 · 11/12/2018 21:32

Thanks Bear, my old Fitbit is gathering dust in a drawer somewhere. I think 2019 I need to start work on muscle tone, I am far too soft overall but in the meantime I will have a look in the Apple Store for period tracker app. I feel completely stupid about this. Glad you had a better day. Mutters to self Christmas is one day not a month.

APlaceAtTheBSDTable · 11/12/2018 23:35

West I use a period calendar app from Amila. It's just called period calendar. I find it very helpful and it works out the most fertile time of the month, when your next period is due, etc.
I finished on 931 cals today but it was a struggle because I was so hungry.

Westwing1 · 12/12/2018 08:56

Thanks APlace, will check it out.

onanothertrain · 12/12/2018 21:28

I'm doing quite well diet wise and still not having breakfast, not really missing it.
Exercise has fallen by the wayside a bit though as i seem to be so busy (as we all are at this time of the year). I'm also struggling with sleep but doubt that's BSD related!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/12/2018 21:55

I've had an ok day today, BSD meals and no sugar. Had cottage pie made with cauliflower cheese crust instead of potato and it was really tasty. Maybe a little too much cheese during the day but it could be worse. I am reading Paul mckenna's sugar book and I did a visualisation exercise which I've done a few times during the day (visualising mince pies and then replacing the image with a big glass of water) - sounds a bit random but I'm really trying everything to get to Christmas without cracking!! I have had a kiwi fruit and an apple today which I wouldn't normally have but I am fighting off a cold and needed some vitamins!

On I'm really struggling with sleep this week, it's usually worse when my period is due but that's not the case this week- I just lie in bed feeling wide awake, last night for 2 hours until I eventually nodded off. It's horrible isn't it? And then it always has a knock on effect the next day.

onanothertrain · 13/12/2018 19:10

Whoops 😯 I was decorating my Christmas cake when a massive bit of marzipan accidently fell in my mouth. No idea how that happened 😬

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/12/2018 19:37

On, it must be the same thing that happened to me- I made toad in the hole for the dc and Dh and a massive chunk of delicious, salty, sausagey batter ended up in my mouth!! Other than that it was an excellent day, 18k steps, 5km run, 45 mins circuits. Why oh why do I do this to myself?!

OP posts:
onanothertrain · 13/12/2018 20:30

I wouldn't worry about a bit of batter bear especially when it's offset by that much exercise.
I promised my OH I'd make mince pies tomorrow. There's no hope for me!

luckylips · 13/12/2018 21:18

Good week but today not so good as it was a Christmas event at work with crisps and dips and I did indulge a bit and have a cider.

Tomorrow is work Xmas party!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/12/2018 21:34

On I replaced half the flour in my mince pies with ground almonds and used only about 1/4 of the sugar and they were really nice and crumbly. Not perfect, but better.

OP posts:
onanothertrain · 13/12/2018 22:05

Thanks bear I usually do some with ground almonds and some with orange in the pastry. I've got some Stevia and will experiment

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/12/2018 22:15

Does it totally spoil the fun to calorie count them as you make them? I wish I had. I managed to convince myself that each one was about 100 calories but I might have been more disciplined if I'd known the truth. The 100 cals was an absolute guess based on what I wanted them to be! My New Years resolution is to be honest with myself about my food consumption, as I do this a lot, (ie not count things because I am in denial!) and I reckon it would be truly eye opening.

OP posts:
onanothertrain · 14/12/2018 07:23

I'll try and report back

Westwing1 · 14/12/2018 09:23

Hi everyone, just weighed and happy to have maintained, feeling well, party last night, had some crisps and delicious crab tartlets, one glass of fizz and then we came home (DH exhausted from difficult week at work) and had a plate of veg. Really going to try and exercise today. Looking back at the last few days it is clear my good days are the one I complete my food diary, if I haven't filled it in it's always a bad day. Stating the obvious I guess.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/12/2018 10:11

Weighed in at 10.1.5 which is my lowest ever, so very pleased with that. I actually think not running and mixing up my workouts a bit has helped. It would he brilliant to get to 9.13 before Christmas, I feel very motivated now!

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/12/2018 10:12

West I definitely find that, although I don't know whether it's not tracking makes me overeat, or overeating makes me not track!

OP posts:
Westwing1 · 14/12/2018 10:37

That's great Bear congratulations! A breakthrough! I am going with not tracking leads to overeating but I do see what you mean. Today's meals are coffee for breakfast, if hungry a poached egg and asparagus for lunch, dinner is small salmon fillet, green veg, glass of wine. Most important goal is exercise. Kiddies both finished school now so we are putting up decorations today.

APlaceAtTheBSDTable · 15/12/2018 11:20

Congratulations bear that's brilliant!
I've lost track this week because DH moved the scales. In our bathroom, a move of a few cms can add or lose you 5 lbs and I can't remember exactly where they were before. I'm just going to have to pick a spot, save a pic of it on my phone and then I'll always know where the scales should be!
Most of my days have been BSD friendly although there was one day when I had a bag of crisps and some christmas cake.
