Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Hey everyone.
Hey Bear.
I'll weigh tomorrow. Blush
I'm back in! Also gonna do dry January aswell. And not fully, but part veganuary aswell. 2 of my friends are vegan, and veganuary seems all the rage. But realistically I think I'll have enough on my plate Wink coping with the dry January. And cutting carbs. Plus low carb does only work for me if it's high meat, high dairy.
Although I'm sure at least one of our previous posters was vegetarian weren't they? Hmmmm Hmm

thenewaveragebear1983 · 31/12/2018 15:40

Hi oblomov!
I'm doing dry January too (except possibly a wedding on the 26th) because I desperately need to get more sleep and I know I sleep better if I don't drink so regularly. I was also considering doing 1 or 2 vegan/veggie days each week, just for a bit of variety and to see if I can do it really. My diet is very animal products heavy and I thought maybe 1 to start with, possibly building up to 2 days a week. I love a challenge!

Tonight we're at friends, we'll be drinking a LOT and secretly I cannot wait for all the excess to be over and to get back to nice clean eating. I feel overstuffed and sluggish. The last two days have been particularly bad, oddly since weighing myself and it not being too bad, I've then gone totally the other way.

I'm in for dry January, on the meat front I reckon two meat days a week is my norm, I probably have 3 fish days and 2 veggie days. Happy New Year everyone!

HalloumiGus · 31/12/2018 20:10

Happy New Year all. I'll be creeping back in to join you in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, cheers!

Sad
Same place I was January 2016. 3 years ago. My heaviest. Now, I'm back at my heaviest. So pissed off. With myself.

Exactly 3 years ago, That's when I joined here, this group. Got down to just below 10 stone. I should be mid 9's. Now look? Back to where I was. Not good.

Ok. I'm ready!! Let's go!

PenelopeFlintstone · 01/01/2019 11:08

I'm back too. All the Christmas food is gone (except for one jar of chocolate almonds) and I'm back to work tomorrow. I've also now got a new event at the end of April so that's something to aim for.
See you all tomorrow Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/01/2019 12:13

Feeling rather delicate today, so I may not start officially until tomorrow. I'll do a proper weigh in and a few measurements tomorrow morning.

Hi, weighed and I gained 5 lbs over Christmas, had curry and lots of wine/fizz yesterday. Curry is deadly for weight gain but it was delicious. Aiming to lose 3 lbs this week. Did half hour on cross trainer, ham and salad bits and pieces for early dinner, skipping breakfast and lunch. I feel really well but stripped off in front of mirror and there is a proper fat tyre or two around my middle. 2019 is going to be about getting my waist measurement down. I think booze is where I go wrong and lack of exercise.

Oblomov18 good for you re weighing, I think I read somewhere that the people who successfully change habits (e.g. quitting smoking) have almost always had several attempts before it sticks. I was slim until my 40s then gained a couple of stone. I know it took me 3 years of failed attempts before I got to my goal, I then put in back on again after about 18 months, then started again Jan 2018 and lost it again. I find getting a nice notebook to food diary/exercise diary is helpful, lots of short term goals. You did it before so you know exactly what to do this time.

veryveryquietly · 01/01/2019 19:14

Hi all and HNY! Returning after being away for several months, as I need to kickstart the next phase of weightloss. I was here last spring and early summer, when I did manage to lose quite a bit, which was really necessary. Have managed to roughly maintain where I am since September, but I would like to lose more, as I'm still quite overweight.

This time around, the plan (writing down for accountability) is to shoot for 1000 - 1200 cals, eat on a 16:8 schedule, track my calories but not count carbs as carefully as in past, weigh in once a week, eat following BSD principles/healthy mediterranean, and try to do a morning walk or get to the gym every other day.

Going to post a few recipe links on that thread, as have added a few more to my file.

veryveryquietly · 01/01/2019 19:23

Hi @awks , yes does work very well for those of us in our 50s. I'm 51 and post meno now, and had lots of success last year. The first few weeks can be wretched, but then you get used to it. For me the benefits included improving my skin, sleep, and general health, and getting rid of back, knee, and ankle/foot pain.

In some ways I think it might be easier to do this if your cycle is wrapping up (no PMS cravings) and if you're a bit older. In my case, I'm not cooking for a full household, so it's much easier to manage. All kudos to those of you doing this eating plan while cooking 'normal' for young kids.

PenelopeFlintstone · 01/01/2019 21:28

Today's weight is 214lbs = 15 stone 4lbs, I think (Wish my scales did stones and pounds but I'm overseas and only have a choice of lbs or kgs.)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/01/2019 08:15

Weighed in at 10.5 this morning, which all things considered is pretty good. I'm aiming to lose 7lb more to be 'at target' but I'm more concerned with getting back to the low carb way of life, and cutting out the sugary rubbish and junk food.

A few hints and tips for new starters:
Good luck everyone! Any new starters or restarters, if you have a tape measure it's a great idea to do a few measurements (especially the all important waist measurement) as it can be a real morale boost to see the inches drop off, as well as your weight. You don't need to post them on here.

Don't worry too much about 'counting carbs' on this plan- focus on eating the right foods and in the right quantities and the carbs will take care of themselves. Read the opening posts on here and please ask any questions!

Drink plenty of water, herbal tea or tea/coffee (count the cals in milk)

If you feel yourself getting a weird, hollow fuzzy headache, you may need some salt added to your diet, especially in the first few days or if you are drinking a lot of water.

The plan works if you work it, but the detox stage can be difficult. Be kind to yourself! Expect a bit of 'carb flu' and some strong cravings. A hot drink, a hot bath, a walk, can all be helpful.

Good luck everyone, please post any questions on here, we're a very friendly bunch. Star

Do you remember me whining about coffee without sugar and how I'd never be able to give up my sugar?
Well, today we were talking about it at work and one person said to go cold turkey and force myself to swallow it and just keep doing that every morning till I was used to it. Well, I had one this afternoon and it was fine! Much better than when I tried coffee with one sugar, which is the usual recommendation.
I'm very happy about this Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/01/2019 10:38

Penelope that's great! I find I really taste the milk now, if I have skimmed milk it tastes different to full fat, and if I have a drop of cream it's really lovely. It shows how sweetness overrides all other flavours. Well done! Enjoy your coffee!

Bluestitch · 02/01/2019 14:41

Hi can I join please? I've stopped and started this plan a few times over the last year or so but never stuck to it properly so my weight has been up and down.

I started again yesterday and am determined to complete the full 8 weeks this time! My weight yesterday was 11st 12 and I'm only 5ft 1 so that gives me a very high BMI. I feel lethargic and sluggish and miserable that none of my clothes fit, need to keep myself motivated somehow. Planning to weigh in once a week, I'm terrible for weighing myself daily and then getting disheartened and giving up if I don't see enough progress. Hope I can get some recipe ideas too!

onanothertrain · 02/01/2019 14:48

Hi all and happy new year.
I've gone carb daft over the past couple of days, don't think I've gained that much but my face is definitely fatter! Ready to get back on it tomorrow, going to try another 4 weeks of 800 cal to hopefully feel less stodgy and definitely need to get back to regular proper exercise.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/01/2019 18:42

Closing the kitchen on 1080 cals, 41g carbs, 14k steps (5.5km run). Not a bad start. Dinner was grilled pork steak, charred peppers and pea and edamame mash.

I had a can of Aldi chicken soup for lunch at work, coffee, Pepsi Max, savagely attacked a ham when I walked in the door but weighed it before I ate it, added a diet shake for dinner and came in at 705 calories. Oh, and ate two chocolate-covered almonds Within that total).

Oblomov18 · 02/01/2019 20:42

That looks yummy.
I've had a disastrous start: 1500 yesterday and 1800 today. Tonnes of carbs. Back to work tomorrow. Will try harder.

Alwayscheerful · 03/01/2019 15:06

I have been good for 6 weeks, however, my calories and carbs crept up to 1200, 1300 and 1500 the last few days, hopefully I managed to mitigate the effects of the extra calories with a few walks, 6.5 mile walk one day, 7 mile the next day and 2 miles today.

Bluestitch · 03/01/2019 15:11

I'm on day 3, hunger pains and an awful headache today. Hoping it passes soon!

onanothertrain · 03/01/2019 15:41

Blue I had a headache at the beginning and just felt a bit weird, it passed after about 5 days. Make sure you're drinking enough as that helped me.

Bluestitch · 03/01/2019 15:58

Thank you, I usually drink fizzy drinks so having cut them out to start this I don't think I'm drinking enough. Off to make a cup of tea, hopefully that will stop the food cravings too for a bit!
