Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

What is more important? 800 or 16h fast? Some days like today I can’t eat before 5 so will be finishing 530-6. Does that make a big difference?

Had lost 5lb first 4 days then nothing 3 days. Then had major biscuit incident as was starving. So now up to -3lb. Back on wagon today!

Maccalenny · 06/03/2019 18:30

onanothertrain - your toast and lemon curd made me laugh! And crave, a tiny bit. It’s years since i had toast and lemon curd, but it sounds good.

Bear - well done! How did the 800cals go?

A lovely moment today - a work colleague who does not know that I am losing weight, told me that I was looking really well and asked if I had lost weight. It felt really good!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/03/2019 20:11

I've found it harder today than Monday. I was decorating and wasn't really in the mood for it, and ended up eating my lunch too early (around 11.30) which seems to switch on my appetite.

Ended on 1032 cals, and 60g carbs (which is weird, because I didn't really eat anything carby!)
12k steps (no run today) but a busy day up and down ladders painting.

Tomorrow: hoping to do my long run, 10 miles, but it's weather dependent as I'm not doing it in the rain! Non fast day, so aiming for 12-1400 cals, maybe more if I do the long run! Lunch will he salad and something, and dinner will be mince based, maybe a chilli- undecided yet!

macca it was lovely, I only had one slice of bread in the house - just as well I think!!

Seawig · 07/03/2019 07:39

Still the same weight today as the last 4 days. Going to be really careful on my protein levels today, and water, and carbs.

Anything else I can do to kickstart losing again?

wowfudge · 07/03/2019 08:25

Finally over a stone lost. Phew. Not much over, but my weight loss had stalled until a weekend off and back on things this week. I've used MFP to count calories this week and think I was going over 800 and over doing the carbs after the first couple of weeks.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/03/2019 17:08

Wowfudge that's brilliant, well done!

Seawig all I can say is keep doing what yoU're doing; drink plenty, track your calories. Upping your fat, especially if you eat some fat late at night can help? Have you done measurements?

I've had a reasonable day so far today. Mid length run, too cold and miserable for a really long one, and then had a yummy salad, with avo, feta and these seed toppers (honestly, they have revolutionised my salads this week!)- I've been having 45cals worth, 10g, but they are so tasty! Tonight I'm cooking chicken for the dc but I don't fancy it, so instead I'm having this seafood in basil (from Lidl) with courgetti and cheese, so hoping it will be nice.

I did crack earlier and had a chocolate biscuit with my coffee, I was struggling after running and Ds was grinding my gears with his whinging (v tired after 3 days at nursery) so I just mindlessly ate one without even realising. However, after eating it I realised that I'm actually due on in 4 days- now normally this week would be an absolute free for all, cannot control myself week, but hey- it's been remarkably calm and on plan. So that's a big positive for me.

Tomorrow, fast day. I will have to have lunch tomorrow as my sister and niece are coming round and she will be very unimpressed if I don't eat til dinner. So probably small salad and egg or something, then dinner will be the chilli I was supposed to cook tonight!

Bear the salad toppers look interesting, I will give them a go. A bit more crunch on a salad would be nice! Hope the fast day today goes well, even with the added challenge of guests.

On the subject of macros, I’m finding that I’m eating more protein and less fat, in order to keep within calorie guidelines. Today will end up at about 60g protein. The guidance on protein intake is confusing, and none of it relates to protein intake on low calorie diets. I am eating fat, in eggs, fish, nuts, a bit of cheese, but I’m not cooking with it or having dressing on salads, as it uses up calories so much. So is filling up on protein ok? Eg chicken, sliced meats. Any thoughts?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/03/2019 07:00

Macca by way of example, on my model fast day on Monday, I had 90g protein, 30g fat, 28g carbs. There is a 'formula' somewhere for how much protein you should have, I think it's about 0.5-0.8 g per pound of body weight. I'm 145lbs so in theory that's 70g-100g protein, which I achieved by having a big chicken breast, so it's possible to do that, and still eat enough fat to keep you going. I suppose the real question is, is it keeping you going? If not, then maybe you need a fattier protein source, such as salmon or mackerel?

I find I need the protein due to my exercise levels, I simply can't do it if I don't eat enough, and rather than lose lots of weight, I go totally the other way and binge on carbs- so it really is in my interests to have extra protein and accept the calories. Must remind myself of this though sometimes!

Not been the best day for me today, not helped by the fact I've made a huge black forest gateaux and salted caramel cupcakes for a family do tomorrow.

Tomorrow might be tricky, best intentions and all that, but a long day with dh's extended family could lead me astray....

OP posts:
Maccalenny · 09/03/2019 05:17

bear thank you for the advice. For some reason I had in my head that 50g was the upper limit on protein, but it sounds like I can comfortably double that it I want to, and then some! I’m eating three meals and a snack every day, all involving protein - eg yesterday was two eggs with salad at breakfast, tin of sardines and salad at lunch, chicken soup for tea, with nuts as a snack. I’m not at all hungry, other than sometimes an hour before lunch, so it seems to be working ok.
Sounds like Black Forest gateau and cupcakes may be needed today if it is nonstop family.....800 can always happen tomorrow!

Maccalenny · 09/03/2019 06:39

Saturday official weigh-in and thoughts......On my second week I have lost another 4lb, making a total loss of very nearly a stone in two weeks. I’m finding it fairly easy to stick to. I plan my meals the night before, prep everything, then don’t really think about food again which is fabulous. Im not short of energy, faint or shaky, or even hungry other than about an hour before lunch on a few days. I’m eating between 7am - 5pm, which I know could be improved on but it is suiting me at the moment. Two people have told me this week that I look really well and have I lost weight, which is amazing as I’ve only been doing this for two weeks and I have a very long way to go! One of the most important things to me is that I feel like I’ve found a way to manage my weight, and therefore my health and risk factors for all those nasty illnesses. I’m eating all the things that are recommended - oily fish, nuts, full fat dairy, loads of veg, eggs, so I feel healthy - better in fact than I did on keto, low fat, slimming world, or any other way I’ve tried to manage my weight. At this point for me, there are no down-sides!
Have a great day everyone.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/03/2019 07:22

Macca that's brilliant, well done!

Re: protein- it's slightly different, because we don't use protein for fuel in the way we do fat/carbs, we need it for amino acids, essential 'building blocks' for repair and building muscle etc. This is why you hear stories of muscle wastage, and people saying any more than 2lbs a week loss isn't healthy because it's muscle etc etc (not true) but it is necessary to have enough complete protein otherwise your body will leach the amino acids from your existing stores (muscles). That in mind, you can see why it's necessary to have a balance of fats (fuel) and protein- but if you eat a balanced diet, you shouldn't need to worry too obsessively about macros.

This info, which I had read before but forgotten, really confirms to me why I may have struggled the last few weeks- my training has been increased, in intensity and time, and I don't think I'd properly taken on board how necessary it is to get the protein in, which had left me feeling very hungry/depleted. Another thing to focus on next week.

Today will be a challenge! I've heard MIL has done a 'hot buffet' kind of affair with casserole type/baked potato dishes, so I think food will be fine, but puddings will be on offer.

wowfudge · 09/03/2019 10:07

We shared a bottle of wine last night and I ate a load of crackers. Anyway there aren't any left now so that temptation has gone. Anyway, the great thing with this diet is that falling off the wagon doesn't mean throwing the towel in, it just slows you down a bit.

Seawig · 09/03/2019 11:04

Half a pound lower this morning but still stuck on 9'11 for some reason.

I'll keep going. Water, protein and minimal carbs again today. Still not battling hunger. It's just the desire to eat tons of chocolate that surfaces occasionally. I keep reminding myself I've been doing that for the past few years and it didn't make me happy.

So onwards to a healthy me! Have lost an inch off my waist in less than 2 weeks so that's got to help to.

anascrecca · 09/03/2019 16:21

Marking place. New to this but think this is the diet for me as I seem to get blood sugar crashes ? That mess up my eating completely . Worse when I'm stressed .

wowfudge · 09/03/2019 17:53

When does it crash and what have you been eating? Sounds as though your insulin levels need regulating.

Maccalenny · 09/03/2019 17:58

Seawig well done for the inch off the waist! That’s brilliant.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/03/2019 21:28

Anascreca welcome. Are you diagnosed diabetic?

Today has been, as predicted, a carb fest, although I did eat a pretty good main course for both lunch and dinner. I did also run 15k this morning to earn myself 1000 calories of carby goodness.....

Tomorrow is a marvellous new BSD day Halo

Urghhhh this diet made my overweight!! Down from obese WinkGrin

I was on the last thread as saltmonster but then fell of MN for a while! Just looked at last weight in on that thread and I was 81kg, now down to 77 now and lost over 11kg overall from my start weight! I've just slipped down into overweight on the bmi calculator and I'm back to try and get down from overweight to healthy, so doing another run of the BSD.

thisyeargoodyear · 10/03/2019 10:50

This weekend is becoming challenging for me. I made some recipes from the recipe books yesterday but I am surprised at the number of carbs in them! Made the butternut squash and red pepper soup and the Mexican bean chilli but there was way more carbs that I normally eat in them!

I lost a small amount of weight this week (week 8 now I think), but a whopping 5 cm from my hips in one week which somehow seems wrong, but I triple checked. Going to do a lot of exercise this week as I haven't really done much so far and I am aware that it's only 9 weeks until my holiday!

Going to try and really focus next week! Smile

wowfudge · 10/03/2019 11:53

I am surprised and pleased that I have now lost 16lbs in total, despite drinking wine and eating cake, etc. I'm sure that keeping on track most of the time is the key. I'm now in another stoneage as they say at SW.

Maccalenny · 10/03/2019 13:56

saltmonster well done! I hope to be overweight myself at some point!

thisyeargoodyear when I read some of the recipes in the book, I was surprised how carb-heavy they are, even though the carbs are coming from decent sources. I think I will be saving them for when I move on to some days off the 800 cals count. Well done on the cms lost and good luck with the exercise.

wowfudge 16lb is fantastic, stick with it! What is the SW stoneage - I’ve not heard that one.

Maccalenny · 10/03/2019 14:01

I’ve made an exercise plan to support my weight loss, with a mix of strength training and HIIT, with a walk at the weekend. My aim is, at some point this year, I will be fit enough and confident enough to join a walking group.
I’ve started small...a very pleasant two mile walk through a local country park. A bit windy but bright and sunny, I really enjoyed it. I will be building a little each week, hopefully getting to about 8 miles by May.

wowfudge · 10/03/2019 14:46

Maccalenny it's what they say when go down to a different stone + lbs. So now I'm 10st +. I feel so much better for losing this much so far. My confidence is returning and my self esteem has improved.
