Blood sugar diet thread 13

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Closing the kitchen today on 1350 cals, 56g carbs. Macro is again 19% carbs, 47% F and 35% P- that magical 20% carbs seems to be working for me this week as I'm just not craving food as I have been. Not sure if it's correlation or causation though! I've done 21k steps, including a 7.5k run. Despite it being a really good week so far, the 800 calories is simply eluding me- I think in order for me to do it I'd need to have a day when I don't run, and treat it as a proper fasting day (ie just one meal), but provided this works I'm happy to stick with what I'm doing for now. It seems a good balance.

No weight loss this morning ( after my initial day one 4 lb loss )
But followed it today lunch at 12 , 300 cals and tea just now 5oo , so waiting to see the scales tomorrow
Ps my work pants feel looser , I don’t feel as bloated and I’m not hungry until just before my meal ( think someone already mentioned this ) so happy bunny 😀

wowfudge · 27/02/2019 21:52

I ate a slice of toast yesterday - just fancied it. Was back on it today though. Just had baked eggs with creme fraiche with asparagus dipped in the yolks for tea. My weight loss seems to have stalled so I'm going to have to look at what I'm eating and make some changes I think. We're away at a friend's place this weekend so I doubt I'll be on plan, but a couple of days off won't derail me.

viccat · 28/02/2019 08:00

W1 Day 4 here and I experienced what I also experienced last time I tried BSD, waking up feeling very weak and clammy with a fast heartbeat. I think it is low blood sugar related and makes sense because yesterday was a very low carb day for me with a very small dinner.

I had to have some carbs (apple juice and a small fruit & nut energy ball, which were the first things I could think of looking in the kitchen cupboards) and felt better quite quickly. Not ideal to have carbs at this point I guess but really felt like I might pass out otherwise. Last time I only experienced it once so hopefully it's a one off as my body withdraws from the junk carbs I've lived on in the past year...

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/02/2019 08:13

Ooh vicat that doesn't sound good. I used to have very low blood sugar when I was pregnant (I had gestational diabetes) and it was really horrible. Hopefully it will settle down once your insulin levels settle down.

Typically day 4 of a good week is when I get all the carb cravings returning as being good for three whole days is far too much effort!! So today I'm determined not to succumb to them! Quick run this morning, salad lunch, and dinner is going to be a mince and lentil 'sort of' moussaka with sliced aubergines and cheese. An experiment of sorts, and possibly higher carb than I've been doing all week, but will see....!!

www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/side-effects#palpitations

Vicat, this sounds interesting (not sure how reputable the site is?) I find that I get a pounding heart at night if I've had a really low carb day, and it links it to salt (not enough) and coffee (too much), both of which could be said about me, but also to low blood sugar as you say. I have to admit, being a lifelong insomniac I just assumed it was that causing my weird pounding heart at night, so now I will definitely try a bit of salt! I use sugar free electrolyte tablets before running so maybe one of those mid evening might do the job?

OP posts:
LittleSwede · 28/02/2019 08:41

Dietdoctor is probably quite a reputable site(I think), but then I might be biased as it was founded by a fellow Swede! It is my first go to page for low carb related reading. have done low carb in past many times but often loose motivation after a few weeks despite 'believing' it in theory. MM seems to allow for a bit more carbs in shape of legumes etc which appeals to me.

Viccat, maybe try a rehydration sachet or tablet? Or some salts and maybe a magnesium supplement.

I'm all set to go with breakfast ready (2 boiled aggs), lunch packed (tune salad) and remains of last night's dinner in fridge for tonight (chilli).

LittleSwede · 28/02/2019 08:42

Lots of typos!

LittleSwede · 28/02/2019 08:44

I get midnight palpitations if I've had too much wine and Dh gets it too. I put it down to dehydration (and probably perimenopause for me) as feel better after water and rehydration tablet.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/02/2019 09:58

Swede I get the wine heart thumps too, although I always assumed that was the adrenaline pumped out to combat the sedative effect of the alcohol? I find wine, but especially gin, makes me fall asleep but then wake up an hour later absolutely wired. It's the main reason I really do try not to drink so frequently these days.

OP posts:
viccat · 28/02/2019 10:03

Thank you, it could be dehydration I suppose although I tried to make a conscious effort to drink more water yesterday. Quite ironic really it happened now as I felt really good yesterday.

Anyway, onwards and upwards, planning to have a lentil based salad for lunch today to get some good carbs in.

LittleSwede · 28/02/2019 10:19

Bear, you're probably right about the adrenaline. I really struggle to get any quality sleep if I have a drink nowadays, still haven't stopped me from having wine though. Hoping to cut this habit with the BSD/fast800 plan though!

Maccalenny · 28/02/2019 18:59

For me it is week 1, end of day 6. I have lost half a stone!! This has taken about a month on every other diet I’ve tried. I’ve not really been hungry, or not until I’m due to eat anyway.
I’m trying to eat only from about 7am - 5 pm. I’m eating three meals, with a boiled egg as a snack if needed. I go to bed early so don’t get tempted to eat in the evenings, which makes life easier I think! I’m busy at work so don’t think about food, and have been eating all meals at work so I’m not tempted to make bad choices at home. The weekend will be harder I’m sure, but I want to get some recipes planned and meals cooked ready for next week.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/02/2019 19:02

Today would have been brilliant except I hit the wall at 3pm, exhausted, fell asleep on the sofa which is very unlike me and ended up eating hobnobs! Nooooooo!! But otherwise, marvellous BSD day all round!

Tonight, hot bath, need to get a decent nights sleep!

OP posts:
LittleSwede · 28/02/2019 19:43

Maccalenny, half a stone is great! I'm only on day two but hoping for a loss by the end of the first week.

Kitchen closing on 813 calories (although didn't count the small emergency cube of cheese I resorted to when feeling weak late morning). I do feel hungry, a lot but am able to keep going with water and herbal tea.

Seawig · 28/02/2019 21:27

That's great news on the weight loss and the determined plodding on people are doing. Encouraging to see it working well for others.

Day 4 week 1 here and this morning I was 3 pounds lighter than Monday morning. Haven't been this light for ages and managing the hunger fine. Eating between 12 and 8 is ok, today I couldn't eat until nearly 1300 and I was fine.

Really enjoying each mouthful when I do eat and realising how little portion sizes I need to be physically full - it's the psychological desire to comfort eat that's challenging.

Maccalenny · 01/03/2019 04:54

Sea wig, I really agree with you about the portion sizes. I would not have believed that I would feel comfortably full after such small amounts, compared to the amount I was eating before.

Laughsandgiggles · 01/03/2019 08:00

Well my weight seems to be shifting again after a plateau so really pleased.
I am now 8 weeks in and apart from a toastie and chips (in one day and that's all I ate that day) I haven't cheated at all.
Quite scary that I haven't had any chocolate, pizza or Red Bull as that was prob about 75% of my diet previously.
Have to echo PPs saying about enjoying every mouthful- it's amazing how much better 'boring' food tastes when sugar intake is low!!

onanothertrain · 01/03/2019 09:05

As some of you might know I don't weigh myself and have been using clothes that non longer fit to measure weight loss.
At the bottom of the pile was a pair of size 8 slim jeans I bought at my slimmest and before starting this couldn't get past my thighsI'm pretty sure they only fitted on the day I bought them
Tried them on this morning and they fit comfortably with no overhang and look great. I'm so excited Grin

viccat · 01/03/2019 09:07

Feeling great this morning. Smile I was really over on calories and carbs yesterday after the low blood sugar episode but still lost weight. 2kg down from this time last week now and it's only Day 5 of properly doing BSD.

Seawig · 01/03/2019 09:21

Day 5 here week 1.

I was 10 stone 6 Sunday, 10'5 Monday and now Friday morning am 10'1.

Really really motivated by that though I know it'll plateau and I need to keep going.

Made the cheese omelette with asparagus for dinner and it was delicious.

DH said my face looked different last night. My jeans don't feel as tight either but long way to go and I need to keep it up.

LittleSwede · 01/03/2019 09:41

Wow, onanothertrain, that is fantastic!

Great to hear that so many of you are all loosing weight.

I'm struggling with grumpiness and hunger this morning. Luckily DD is at nursery all day and I am off work do can take it easy. Am planning on cooking the red lentil and coconut soup from the fast800 book for lunch today (with leftovers for weekend).

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/03/2019 09:47

Well done everyone! I'm starting March 2lbs heavier than I started February (Blush) although as I've said it's been a really up and down month with lots of social things, training for my race, and generally struggling. so only 2lbs on is something of a miracle all things considered.

I'm starting March with a meal at my in laws tonight, with wine (dear god, please let there be wine....) and so will commence properly tomorrow. Lots of social things looming though, as always, and most of them involve food of some sort. I feel motivated though, and that's a good start.

Well done on all your cracking losses, brilliant work Star

Onanothertrain and seawig, that must make you feel so good! I have half a wardrobe stuffed full of clothes that don’t fit, and one favourite skirt hanging on the back of my door so I can see it as constant inspiration. I remember that when I lost a significant amount of weight previously, just choosing what to wear each day became a real pleasure.

Well done everyone on the great weight loss, or the intention to get focussed and back to it!

My official weigh in day will be Saturday, so at the end of week one I have officially lost......(drum roll)........9.2lb.
To put that in context, it is more than I lost over 8 weeks of doing very strict slimming world a while back.
To say that I am happy is a very large understatement.
I am nearly letting myself believe that this might work long-term, and that I might not always be fat.
