Blood sugar diet thread 13

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

That's amazing Maccalenny! So glad it's working so well for you.

I keep thinking it'll slow and plateau, but I also feel I'm learning new habits about portion size, avoiding snacking, 16:8, and what types of food to eat most of.

I'm hoping once I get to a healthy weight I can use those tools to keep it that way. And that will be less of a struggle with less cravings.

Today is week one day 6.
I have lost 6 pounds this week and am just below 10 stone for the first time in years.

LittleSwede · 02/03/2019 08:24

Bear, I'm sure the 2 pound will come off really quickly!

I really struggled yesterday but managed to stay on track and kept to around 800. Have lost 1 kg which is something although was hoping for more if a woosh!

Am thinking about going over to 5:2 (with 800 on fasting days and sticking to low carb on other days) after a kick start though but will see how the next few days plan out.

LittleSwede · 02/03/2019 08:25

Wow Maccalenny!

LittleSwede · 02/03/2019 08:26

6 pound is s great loss Seawig!

thisyeargoodyear · 02/03/2019 08:51

Great losses!

Week 7 weigh in for me and 21.5 lbs down in total. I am totally delighted and I am almost 50% there towards my overall goal. A goal which I originally thought would never be achievable but is becoming more realistic day by day!

Maccalenny · 02/03/2019 09:01

thisyeargoodyear, do you have a plan for when you get to where you want to be? Are you carrying on with 800cal till you get there, or changing things after the 8 weeks are up? I’m only at end of week 1, but am trying to think ahead!

Well done on your amazing loss!

Laughsandgiggles · 02/03/2019 09:10

@Maccalenny I have done the same thing with a jacket that I love. It's a tweed jacket that I really want to fit into by June so I can compete my horse at the Highland show. I've also been taking photos of me trying to wear it which has been very motivational. I can now do up 2 out of 3 buttons when at the start of the year I could barely even get my arms into it!!
Well done everyone on your losses. Great to hear it working so well for everybody.

thisyeargoodyear · 02/03/2019 09:24

Hi Maccalenny, I am following the fast 800 book so my plan is to continue for the full 12 weeks (which takes me until the start of April), then depending on where I am at maybe do 4 days per week on 800 cals and 3 days per week following a Mediterranean diet (but keeping calories to less than 1500/day), then I will slowly work my way to 5:2. Although I very conscious that I have a 2 week holiday in May so when I get back from my holiday I plan on doing 2 full weeks at 800 calories to hopefully loose what I will have gained on holiday. I won't be calorie counting on holiday but will try and be sensible and will take my protein shakes with me for breakfast. We are off to the USA on a family holiday and I know that healthy food choices will not always be readily available (going to Disney World). But I plan to enjoy my holiday and not worry about food too much!

onanothertrain · 02/03/2019 10:24

Well done everyone!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/03/2019 10:37

Amazing losses everyone, you are all Fab-U-Lous StarStarStarStar

Really enjoyable night last night with Dh and my in-laws, rather a lot of red wine, but food was generally good and small ish portions too so while I'm not doing the scales of shame this morning, I'm not wholly terrified of them either.

Today I'm having scrambled duck eggs and avocado for brunch (after dragging my carcass out for a run!) and dinner is chicken curry which myself and Ds are making together (I will be sous chef), lots of pottering about jobs and keeping busy.

Have a great weekend!

Had a reasonable day today, nice run in the sunshine, nothing too terrible food wise, and yet I feel really blah and fed up.

Just planned my week out for next week. I'm going to try a new strategy as I really want a kick start back into being sugar free. I don't really have much to lose now, only a few pounds really, but I feel so unhealthy and I still don't feel like I've got a firm grasp on my eating at the moment. I'd also like to try and get a few Fast 800 days in.

So: I'm going to do alternate days at 800 cals, and 1400 on the other days. Running only on non 800 days. I am fairly convinced that the only way I'll manage to achieve 800 cals is to have 1 big meal each day (early dinner at 5pm) and then an evening snack at around 8pm. Provided I can keep busy during the day I hope that will be manageable, especially as it's not every day.

Things in my way next week- it's pancake day (my favourite of all the religious festivals) and substitute ones just do not cut it for me, so will have to decide whether to abstain or whether to count 1 within calories. Also a family do on Saturday, for which I need to bake some sort of chocolate cake. Food should be possible to be on plan though, provided I choose wisely.

Otherwise, nothing too major.

You all need to send me your willpower vibes, I've been very inspired by your excellent losses and more importantly, your focus and motivation. I feel generally quite exhausted and 'flat' recently, and I know this could be improved by a few good days on plan. I felt brilliant at the beginning of the week when my food was good and the sun was shining.

thenewaveragebear1983, you are always so positive and supportive to everyone else here, that we will all be sending positive vibes to get focussed and in control again, and back to feeling good.

Maccalenny · 03/03/2019 05:17

I was just wondering what apps people use to track weight, food etc? Any recommendations?

LittleSwede · 03/03/2019 07:52

Sending positive vibes to bear!

March is a great month for fasting, not the not does it fall in with lent (not that I'm religious or anything) but in Ayurvedic medicine it is recommended to to a spring cleanse to reignite the digestive fire (Agni). In Ayurveda a healthy gut equals a healthy body. Looking at modern research into fasting it all makes sense too and ties in with just about everything MM covers in his books. Interesting that the ancient Indians were onto something so long ago then we all got side tracked with low fat diets full of carbs, light products and processed stuff and the belief that fat makes us fat etc.

I'm going over to the 5:2 version of BSD so will hopefully a bit between the 5:2 thread and this one for now. Found it too hard with the 800 when DD is not sleeping well and me being very run down. Am sticking to low carb and if sleep improves I may well for a couple of 800 calorie weeks!

BuffaloCauliflower · 03/03/2019 10:57

@Maccalenny I use Chronometer to track food as it’s much more detailed, and track my weight and calories burned on my Fitbit app, but I have them linked together so Chronometer knows my weight and Fitbit knows what I’m eating. Very clever.

Maccalenny · 03/03/2019 11:23

I’m trying the nutracheck app for food at the moment. It is free for a week so wanted to see what other people use before I commit to it. I do like it, and keep finding new bits it can do.
Does chronometer have lots of uk supermarket foods on, so it knows the calories etc?

howhowhow · 03/03/2019 12:15

I'm down to 14 stone this morning woo hoo. The last few weeks have felt a bit slow but I lost over 3lbs last week and feeling revitalised!! Hopefully will start with a 13 very soon. It's starting to feel achievable (unlike when I weighed in at virtually 16 stone).

I think I have been cheating a little bit by as soon as I started being strict it started falling off again. Now need to work out what I'm going to do as 8 weeks at an end...

Maccalenny · 03/03/2019 16:49

Well done howhowhow! How long have you been on the diet for?

Seawig · 03/03/2019 17:51

This morning was another pound down! It's amazing. Hoping I can get to my healthy weight soon but realistic there will be plateaus.

Really encouraging to hear how much everyone is trying and making progress too. I've not found an app I like yet but am googling all calories so my google is wondering why I am asking such random questions as 30g strawberries how many calories?

Made the lentil, tomato and ham soup tonight and it's lovely. Very filling so I'm going to freeze some for other days.

Only odd unexpected effect is it's affecting my hormones. I've read around though and it's the oestrogen stored in fat being released so should settle down.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/03/2019 19:02

Seawig I use one called 'fat secret' which seems to have most of what I use on there, plus I add my own items. It's really simple to use, and it's free!

We had pulled pork tonight, with a homemade bbq sauce which was really tasty. And grated cheese. (Lots of calories but was delicious!)

Ran 7km this afternoon in the cold and rain, and have had a pretty good day on plan.

Tomorrow is my first planned fast800 day. My plan is to hold out as long as possible, then have Chicken and loads of veg for dinner. Possible evening snack after dinner if I need it. I should have enough calories for An almond milk and berries shake with some protein powder in it if I need it but I'm hoping not to. I plan to tackle my mid afternoon slump with a few hiit exercises, so I have brought my mat and kettlebell downstairs so that as soon as I get the 'ooooh kitchen' feeling I will, hopefully, do my workout instead. I'm hoping this will relieve my boredom eating and also give me a happy boost (as I am definitely an emotional eater!)

The junk food doc with mosely was very good. Unrelated to BSD, but interesting nonetheless and has prompted a good discussion in our house about 'being' healthy and 'feeling' healthy- my Dh is slim but his diet is shocking, and I think it's made him realise that he isn't eating particularly well.

OP posts:
Maccalenny · 03/03/2019 19:15

Seawig, that is interesting about the hormones, as I have been affected the same!

Bear, good luck with your 800 day tomorrow.

For the first time, I’ve only had two meals today. I had breakfast at about 9.00, then was not really hungry for lunch, so had an early tea at about 4. No snacks in between. Very unlike me!

LittleSwede · 03/03/2019 19:22

I use fat secret too and find it easy to use. Use to have a Fitbit counter app but didn't get on with it particularly well.

Interesting about the being or feeling healthy. I have a very slim friend who was suffering with a lot of health problems despite looking really 'fit'. After overhauling her diet and now only cooking from scratch, increasing veg intake and generally eating really well, her health has improved dramatically.

FD for me tomorrow, quite looking forward to it! Odd but following my four days on the 800 calories I have found that I am eating a lot less this weekend, NFD for me, and feeling fuller quicker.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/03/2019 19:35

Littleswede if I ate what my Dh ate, regardless of weight gain/loss I would feel so sluggish and unhealthy. He has sort of ignored it as he's always been slim, but to be honest he's probably a ticking time bomb of metabolic conditions as he does virtually no exercise, eats lots of processed foods (not takeaways, but thinks service station sandwiches are a healthier choice Hmm) and generally eats beige food (except what I cook). Because he doesn't have a sweet tooth I think he's always felt In control of it but watching that made him realise that there is stuff going on underneath that you can't see.

Just being lurking here last few weeks. Now on day 5 and early signs look good. We shall see in two days. I spent year on and off doing 5:2 I would lose a pound each fast day but then when I went back to eating normal but still under my 1600 limit I would put it all back on. So frustrating. But blood test showed my HAbc (or whatever blood sugar test is called ) was lurking very close to the limit of normal so need to do
Something.
