Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Had the weekend off as staying with friends. But I am determined. After my initial rapid weight loss it stalled so I need to kick start things again and am going to stick to what's in the book as it worked for me before.

BuffaloCauliflower · 04/03/2019 08:48

Also had a weekend off due to a hen do and my subsequent recovery (or lack there of!) I feel mostly awful and definitely don’t want any booze for a long long time! I’ve managed to stay the same weight at least, and I’m not at work today and haven’t eaten since 5pm yesterday, so going to go for a longer fast go get myself back into the rhythm. I must say of any plan I’ve tried, this is first where I’ve wavered for any reason then felt able to just get straight back to it. Normally if it goes ‘wrong’, it’s gone until I can next muster up the motivation.
Now I’m safely inside the 10s, next stop is to get into the 9s - a number I’ve not seen for a good old while

Seawig · 04/03/2019 08:54

It is really encouraging how the fasting and focus on protein and smaller portions can be picked up again and start having an impact again straight away.

I lost half a pound since yesterday but don't think I drank enough water so going to be more careful with that today.

I also made so much of the lentil soup I have frozen some pots of it, so easy to stick to the plan if needing a quick dinner or lunch.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/03/2019 09:05

Welcome akire.

Great work everyone. I agree re: getting back 'on it', I think partly it's the motivation of knowing that if you are on it properly, the weight loss is quick and you very quickly feel better.

Have a great week ahead!

Day 1 of Week 2 here and feeling quite disappointed to be honest. The scales haven't shifted since day 4, leaving the first week's loss at 1.5kg. I've read so many people say they lost the most in week 1 and then it slows down and I'm a bit worried if that's the case for me. I stuck to the plan all week.

I am coming up to ToTM soon so hoping it's that and things will improve again.

wowfudge · 04/03/2019 10:27

Can anyone post some low/no carb lunch ideas? I forgot to bring the book with me and want to stick to around 250 calories max.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/03/2019 10:52

Wow is it things to get today to eat today? If so I'd go to a supermarket and get some cooked chicken or ham, a premade salad, cheese etc and assemble my own rather than try to find a premade salad in the 'meals to go' section. If you have a Morrison's they do an excellent salad bar selection with Hb eggs, olives, salad etc.

Viccat I'm feeling the same! Stuck absolutely to the plan and lost 2kg - I was expecting more. Hopefully it'll pick up in week 2 🤞

LittleSwede · 04/03/2019 12:23

Viccat, I only lost 1,5 kg too (day 6 for me) but my clothes are looser and my face is slimmer. Maybe try on some clothes and see if they feel looser?

wowfudge · 04/03/2019 13:14

Hi @bear - yes. I'm thinking of getting hard boiled eggs, spinach and smoked salmon. Got a Co-op and Tesco nearby but no Morrisons.

wowfudge · 04/03/2019 13:58

Slim pickings at the Co-op - I got spinach, cottage cheese and smoked salmon. Added some parsley and pickled baby gherkins.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/03/2019 14:08

Wow I find anything 'premade' even at nice places like M&S almost always have carbs. They may be fancy carbs like couscous or 'wheat berries' whatever they may be, but they're still too carby. It does make lunches out hard if you're looking for a grab and go. I sometimes peruse the deli in supermarkets- things like chicken satay, even a piece of quiche at a push, can be a better choice. Sounds like you did well under the circumstances.

Except the gherkins ^ Grin

OP posts:
wowfudge · 04/03/2019 14:38

It was the gherkins wot made it - cottage cheese is so dull. I shy away from ready made, but we were away for the weekend, haven't done any food shopping and I was lacking inspiration.

I did remember to get a chicken breast out of the freezer this morning though so that's tea sorted.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/03/2019 19:25

I've done my first 800 calorie day in a very long time. I have basically used my calories on milk in my coffee and a huuuuuuge dinner of chicken, salad, cheese, mayo and some seed sprinkles on the top. Lovely. Plus I have yoghurt and berries for a pm snack as I was too full after dinner. I have that familiar carb detox headache too, so plenty of water for me.

Tomorrow, work in the morning and then a run. Lunch will be salad and protein of some sort, dinner will be liver and bacon casserole and veg, plus maybe a small pancake afterwards! Aiming for 1400 cals.

Today was manageable, I actually didn't feel hungry until I started cooking and then felt ravenous. It's a good way to reflect on how I eat though, I can tell after a day's fast just how honest I've been (or not been!) with myself recently.

OP posts:
wowfudge · 05/03/2019 11:55

I was doing really well until I got home late and ate a couple of biscuits and a load of crackers. Anyway, today that won't be happening and the shopping will be delivered tonight so there'll be no excuses for not eating on plan!

howhowhow · 05/03/2019 14:51

Maccalenny I started on 2 Jan and have lost 2 stone near enough.

All has gone wrong today though. I have eaten nothing but chocolate cake. It was my son's birthday so we have a huge one. I haven't eaten anything like that since I started the diet. Self sabotage.

Seawig · 05/03/2019 15:05

Someone shared an oat pancake recipe from the BSD forum so I'm soaking oats in milk for my one pancake tonight.

The kids want normal ones but I'm not too tempted as I'm feeling the benefit of the new way and still motivated by the 9 pounds I've lost in 9 days so don't want to lose my way.

Dinner out at the weekend will be trickier but I'm going to read the menu ahead of time and google calories and plan my choice before I'm there to help myself.

Still at 9'11 today as yesterday so I'm plodding on and checking carbs carefully too and lots of water.

wowfudge · 05/03/2019 16:14

There's a recipe in the Fast800 book (I think) for pancakes made with ground almonds. That's right up my strasse.

wowfudge · 05/03/2019 16:16

bear you might know the answer to this - what proportions should protein, fat and carbs be in for optimal weight loss on a daily basis? You can set these in MFP so it would be really useful to know.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/03/2019 16:29

Well forgive me BSD-ers but I will be having one proper pancake tonight. I bloody love them and figured I might as well have one decent one than a substitute.

Wow i don't think there is a set formulae. I think it really depends on you and what you can manage long term. If I have a really brilliant day, I will usually find that I end up on about 20% carbs, 40/40 fat / protein. I eat more than 800 calories as a rule, so if I can keep under 50g carbs even though I've had 1400 cals or more, then that obviously gives me a good low carb percentage. If you want to achieve ketogenesis, you really need to be not only reducing carbs but also simultaneously increasing protein (but we don't aim for keto really on this plan)

However, I struggle to do very low carb days long term, and find that if I do too many in a row I will 'crash' and end up having loads of biscuits carbs, so it's counterintuitive for me really. A good daily balance of 20/30% carbs is what works best for me.

Closing the kitchen on 1300 cals, 51g carbs (which includes my pancake!) and 26k steps (9 k run) - so not a bad non fast day! Tomorrow will be the test I think, can I recreate Monday's success? I am Home all day painting my bathroom so busy, but easy access to the kitchen. I'm planning to hold out most of the day again, then have a big filling dinner and yogurt. I have enough calories for a small shake with berries if I need it but I'm hoping not to.

OP posts:
wowfudge · 05/03/2019 20:51

800 calories for me, which included the almond pancakes. I won't be making them again in a hurry though they filled a hole.

onanothertrain · 05/03/2019 21:00

I was getting jealous at all the talk of pancakes so I thought sod it I'm having a pancake too. Except I don't like pancakes so I compromised with a bit of toast with lemon curd on 😳

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/03/2019 07:15

Wednesday weigh in for me, and I'm 10.4 which is about a pound off since 1st March. Probably a touch of pancake weight! It's not groundbreaking, granted, but then I don't have much to lose so I'll take that

OP posts:
Seawig · 06/03/2019 08:24

I've stayed the same for four days now, so careful checking the calories and taking food in today that I can know is high protein low carb rather than risk the work buffet fillings.

I'm getting used to having a few foods each day and enjoying them, rather than feeling I'm going to miss out if I don't have a bit of everything on offer every time!
