Today has gone horribly wrong. Loads of sugar. I blame my hormones but still, I am annoyed with myself for eating it and will have to be extra careful tomorrow to try to rein it in.

As an aside, I cannot wait for school to go back- weds and thurs for us. We have literally no routine and it’s adding to my chaotic eating.

Ok, here’s my menu plan for the week all calorie controlled. It’s bizarre, I have been doing this so long now I pretty much know how to pitch almost exactly at 800 calories for the day- so why do I then not stick to it? My plan to be good this week has only partly materialised (see earlier post!) and I do think I need more than 800 calories. So maybe with this planned, mixed up the breakfasts/lunches etc, and try to have my evening meal later so I’m not grazing, plus make my intake up to around 11-1200 by adding veg/protein snacks or to meals. That basically gives me 2-300 to play with every day. Plus I will try to freeze some portions so next week I should have the same again to hand. Simples?

Looks good to me, bear. 800 really is low, and I wonder if very similar benefits can be had by 900-1000 calories and sticking to the same foods
I have managed 950 today after this morning’s disastrous start. Agree it takes a bit of experimenting how best to arrange the calories over the day.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/09/2018 07:13

Quince I have found 1000 a good level in the past, particularly if the carbs stay low. The 800 calories limit is low for a reason, it’s to get rid of all the visceral fat quickly. Once that’s gone (which can happen in just a few weeks according to the book) then everything should be working so much more efficiently anyway. I’m finding that I’m just not managing 800 calories ever, and am supplementing the menu with all the easy to grab, high carb rubbish that I really don’t want to eat. So anyway, I’ll see how this pans out and whether it’s more achievable.

Today: need to go shopping to get all the stuff for this list! I have a touch of a cold/sore throat so not feeling 100%. Although, no alcohol yesterday, I’m going to try (try) to do 4 weeks alcohol free before our cruise.
Eggs for brunch/ roast chicken for tea with lots of veg (I don’t eat much veg, other than salad. I like it, I just don’t eat it) - so I might make a few veg dishes that I can have during the week too. Possibly a run later although I might just do a 30DS instead. It would be good to get back into that as I was doing it regularly.

Thank you bear i added some canned sardines to my chunky soup. Went to bed happy at 1000 cals . I like sardines btw.
Im impressed w your organising! Im sure eating and everything these gets less chaotic with children back in school.
Waves at everyone. Im new this is my second day. Im trying this partly with help of the iceland slimming world meals. I thought having some portioned out calorie counted meals would reduce the urge to cave in when i cant be bothered. Probably not in the spirit of things to eat ready meals but theres a few without starchy carbs.
Does anyone else have shortcuts they find useful?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/09/2018 08:57

Lasttime I like the sw meals too, it’s hard to find ready meals without carbs added such as rice etc but they do a few. The meat products such as meatballs/sausages are quite low meat/high carb though (just as a warning) and obviously they are low fat which is why the calories are low- but you don’t necessarily need to eat low fat food on this plan and you may find you get hungry. Asda do their own range too.

My ‘go to’ freezer products are: Young’s gastro fish (some are low enough carb and they are really tasty), those square fish fillets in cheese or parsley sauce (70’s chic....), asda do a very manly range of ‘high protein’ ready meals too in black packaging which are often in the reduced section and they are nice. I use a few of the Schwartz mixes too, they do have some carbs often in the form of starch or some sugar, but overall it’s a very small amount and I often think it’s worth it occasionally for a but if variety. Same with jar sauces and meal kits etc.

You can’t really go wrong with a formulaic ‘meat+ fat+ veg’ combo either. I’ve bought little pots of garlic butter before which is an easy and controlled way to add the necessary fat to a steak or chicken breast. Birds eye do a range of steam fresh veg (frozen) that have an oil and herb sauce.

I usually find one new thing to try when I go shopping, the manufacturers do seem to be slowly coming round to the fact that some people do want to eat fat and they can still market those things as ‘healthy’. They are significantly slower at realising we don’t want sugar, or that sugar replacements are still sugar (so many kids things are labelled sugar free and are full of sweetener or puréed fruit which is still sugar!!!!) And ultimately, the best way to ensure you know what you’re having is to cook it all yourself, which is time consuming.

Today is my dc’s last day of free for all sugar consumption- we are back sugar free from tomorrow!

Raisins yes thank you for the suggestions. You are so right, I do need to reconsider this.

I've been on lucozade for over 30 years, and when I am very low, badly hypo I can't physically eat anything solid, so a liquid is best for me, but obviously lucozade with its new recipe, less sugar, is no longer the answer.

I'm due at diabetic clinic in 2 weeks. I'll get told off, yet again.

I had a very interesting conversation with Dh in bed this morning, About how I spend all my time looking after our meals, what we are going to eat next, running both ds's to football and constantly washing football kits etc..... instead of prioritising ME and My diabetes.

Oblomov I bought this book recently. It was much more type 1 focussed, based around a mum and her T1 son and the issues they’d faced. It has weekly meal plans, loads of info, the recipes are BSD compatible. I wonder if it might help you?

lasttimeround · 02/09/2018 12:24

Thanks bear those are useul tips. I spotted the iceland ones as having a fair number of lowish carb meals without loads of filler. I will keep an eye out for the ranges you mention.

Westwing1 · 02/09/2018 12:49

Oblomov18 maybe try asking yourself what would I be doing if DS had diabetes? How would I shop, menu plan, organise things for him? It might help you prioritise your health.

Lasttimearound I am a SAHM with older children so I have the time to cook from scratch (hate cooking though). The only shortcuts I can think of are my tins of sardine/pilchard fillets which you are already on to, otherwise I guess smoked mackerel fillets (high fat) are very filling, cheap prepacked, I eat them cold with lots of tomatoes, eggs are also my go to quick lunch/dinner, omelettes/frittatas. I also buy pouches of cooked lentils which you can eat cold or heat in microwave for 1 minute. Otherwise I would say 50% of my diet is foil roasted fish and tonnes of veg steamed in microwave.

Very busy 48 hours, house very cluttered and messy, looking forward to a proper cleaning session when kids back at school next week. I stepped on scales and am one pound below my target weight. My little weight tracking app gave me a cheer and round of applause, I spilt my coffee. I have been very strict for a few days and been running around a lot but I had no idea I had burnt off so much this week. You are not getting rid of me yet though as I really want to maintain this and not bob up and down so much.

veryveryquietly · 02/09/2018 16:39

Yay westwing that's marvelous, here's a round of applause from us!

I'm peeking back in after several days away from MN. Have had a few days this week of definitely overdoing it, though in most cases staying fairly BSD compliant.

Checking my tracker it looks like I've basically been maintaining for the past month, hovering within a 3 lb window. A bit disappointing, as I need to be losing, but still, better than gaining. Am also getting back to the gym more frequently, which is terrific. Further motivated by a little shopping: have had to order new work clothes for fall, and am presently down into a size I haven't worn in...10 years, maybe more? I'm still firmly in the plus range, but it's very gratifying to be (whispers) 4 sizes smaller on bottom.

Am also very glad it is getting to be soup weather, as I am superbored with what I've been eating and am desperate to try new recipes.

I've also been thinking it's probably time to shoot for 1000 cals/day rather than 800 or 850, which is what I was trying for and failing to do. Going so low definitely worked at the beginning, in my first two cycles of BSD, but I think now I'd be better off with a more realistic everyday calorie target combined with more physical activity.

onanothertrain · 02/09/2018 18:08

I made it!! Today is the last day of week 8 for me. Finishing on 844 calories and 30g carbs. I have decided to do one more week at 800 calories as I won't get to day 30 of 30DS until Fri and then I'm on holiday. This week 3 people have noticed I have lost weight, that's the first time since I started - I'm estimating my loss to be 1 1/2 to 2 stone.
I was at a house warming party last night and all the food was pretty carby so I didn't have any food which made the wine pretty potent Hmm I'm not sure the carrot sticks and piece of cheese I found in my bag on the train home soaked up much of the alcohol.....

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/09/2018 19:09

Very have you done your measurements? Often when I have these plateaus it’s when I’m shrinking inches.

Good day today. I actually didn’t eat til 3pm and it was strange to feel properly hungry for a change after eating so much recently. Made lentil and bacon soup for lunch (will have tomorrow as well) and had roast chicken and lots of veg with gravy for dinner. I also made a delicious low carb sugar free crumble- stewed Apple and blackberries, and topped with a layer of crumble which was peanut butter powder, porridge oats, ground almonds and butter. It was surprisingly authentic and tasty, with a bit of cream. Much needed too. I will freeze the remaining half as it was quite calorific despite being on plan.

I’m closing the kitchen on 900 cals, 65g carbs, 12k steps (5km run)

Souns like some great results out there. Thanks for the cooked lentil tip westwing.
Ive got day 2 behind me: 900 cals, 65g carbs.
Im going to up my activity levelstomorrow as I've had a low energy sluggish weekend. I hope i get in the swing of it soon

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/09/2018 20:46

Last it’s completely normal to feel exhausted the first few days, once you get in the swing of it you’ll be fine and have loads of energy.

OP posts:
quince2figs · 02/09/2018 22:22

Well done all!
bear, that crumble sounds absolutely delicious - I must try it. I love crumble, and have had a bumper drop of plums, damsons, apples and pears from the garden to use (most frozen). Quinces on their way soon. There is a jar of baked proper crumble topping from last week, looking at me every time I open the cupboard. Best give it to the children and dh to eat, sharpish!
Much better today on 781 calories - but 79g carbs need reducing.
I haven’t weighed myself, but am feeling a lot less hungry, and less carb cravings than the usual ridiculous level.

Westwing1 · 02/09/2018 22:31

Thanks veryveryquietly that's sweet of you. Not feeling confident at new weight, I seem to gain so much if I even look at a potatoe, if I can maintain for 2 weeks I think I will feel more like I've cracked it.

Congrats onanothertrain you've been so disciplined and consistent, hats off.

Roast chicken and 4 veg for dinner. Tablespoon of peanut butter for snack. Taking some 11 year olds to shark movie tomorrow and pizza express afterwards, not sure whether to go salad or a low cal pizza.

Oblomov18 · 03/09/2018 07:07

Well done OnAnotherTrain!

I was doing ok, then last night had wine and tonnes and tonnes of peanuts and crisps etc!

But last week I was quite strict, some days, so just weighed and have lost 4 lbs, at least I'm back into the 10's, so am pleased and will continue.

Oblomov18 · 03/09/2018 07:48

Thank you Westwing for the ds suggestion re my diabetes, and Bear for the book recommendation.

Was it Quince ? Who ate something (bagel or scone in bed or something) her Dh gave her, because she felt 'obliged'? I've done that quite a few times this week: eaten a jacket potato and also beans on toast, just because it was presented to me, and because Dh said there was practically nothing else in the fridge to eat, which was true! Tricky one..... Hmm

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 03/09/2018 08:05

Back to work today so first cycle commute for 6 weeks. Eek.

The final result for the summer holiday is...drum roll please...stayed the same! I think if I hadn't kept trying to lose and had aimed for that I would have put on.

I started September at 14 2.6 and am now 13 11.6 (hooray for water!). Packed lunch all ready and I'm getting on that term time treadmill with a smile. Although I know I will not feel the same at half term...

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/09/2018 08:30

Oblomov that’s brilliant. 4lbs in spite of a few misdemeanours is marvellous.

Amazing well done also. I wish I could say the same for my holidays, I reckon I’ll be about 3lb up over the 6 weeks but I’m not weighing til tomorrow. Hope the first day back goes well. I am an ex-teacher, you have my utmost respect sympathy.

Whoever recommended ‘never binge again’ on kindle- thank you! It’s a very interesting read. A bit Americanised and ‘self helpy’ but it makes perfect sense. I hope it’s a strategy I can employ to get me back on track. I would recommend to anyone who is struggling a bit, and at the moment if you go to kindle store to download (through amazon) it’s free.

Down 3 lbs in 2 days. I know its water but what a relief. I was popping out of my clothes and very uncomfortable. I've had one of those crazy weight gain streaks when i stopped lchf despite eating healthily. I am really hoping doing this properly will fix this carb reaction i get where I simply cant stop eating when i eat more than about 100g carbs as i gain 2 or more pounds a week. Its awful and really difficult getting dressed and im overweight now edging onto obese.
Anyway feeling positive today and on to day 3.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/09/2018 08:57

I’m the same last, and it all goes on my stomach (or so it feels anyway) so instantly my clothes feel uncomfortable.

OP posts:
waterandlemonjuice · 03/09/2018 14:36

Hello everyone. I drank wine and ate pizza and 2 pieces of toast this weekend which was annoying. So dare not even weigh myself. But have stuck to it otherwise and so far this week. Made a lovely lunch for tomorrow: trout with crème fraiche, horseradish, dill and a squeeze of lemon. Having it with salad and I reckon it's about 250 cals.
