Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Welcome! Well done with the biscuit cravings hovis. We’ve never been a family for sweet biscuits luckily! Regarding chocolate- Lindt 70% is lovely and a square can really help a craving. I’ve not had any for ages but usually ‘need’ chocolate when I’m due on. Don’t go 85% or 90% as that’s awfully bitter. I also break into squares first and pop in freezer then it lasts much longer when you suck it! I’ve been doing the freezing chocolate thing for decades!
I don’t know how anyone can wait 2 weeks without weighing! I’m daily. Static this morning at 11.4.4 - still 1lb away from loosing a stone and halfway to my goal (again... de ja vu from last week!)

Acorncat · 10/06/2018 07:37

Thanks for chocolate info, I was thinking we couldn’t have anything with added sugar. I hadn’t realised how much carbs where in my oat milk, that was a depressing find this morning! I drink way too much coffee and tea but will bit down the milk in them I guess.

I weigh twice weekly, I took measurements at the start but wish i’d taken photos too.

Hoviscats · 10/06/2018 08:26

I find daily weighing good for maintenance but for some reason when trying to lose weight i seem to do better to wait as long as possible, weird! ConfusedGrin

Snowglobes · 10/06/2018 08:34

As you can see I’ve been rubbish since 25th May! I’ve never been on a diet before but have gradually gained weight over the years and gone from a size 8/10 in my 20’s and early 30’s (where I could eat & drink what the he’ll I liked) to size 14/16 in my late 40’s. This approach is definitely working but without this thread I think I’d have given up. So thanks!!

This is my graph snow, never thought to investigate that section on Fitbit. I’ve been rubbish too this month, pretty much a straight line! But overall it’s a reasonable slope!

Last night’s sugar fest has paid me back cruelly on the scales this morning. Combined with totm water retention and general overeating, plus the impact of all those carbs has tipped the scales a whopping 3lb up! Sometimes I need that though to show /remind me just how badly my body copes with it.

Went out at 7.00 for a 5km run, and now sitting sweating out my alcohol at ds’s swimming lesson on the pool side as it’s roasting in here!

Planning to fast as long as possible today, probably have eggy lunch and we have pork chops, plus I took two miscellaneous roast dinners out of the freezer this morning. Mystery meat!

Morning everyone - thanks for for the halloumi tips, might try it this week. Oblomov your kebabs look fantastic!

Snowglobes - you have done brilliantly and as a lifelong and experienced dieter Blush I can assure you that it's really common to have periods when you plateau and go up and down around a particular weight, which is what it looks like on your graph. Focus on the overall trend which is definitely downwards and on keeping going.

I am just a pound off my initial target of 10st 10lbs (which will also be 10lbs off in 4 weeks). I saw it yesterday but it has bobbled up again today but I feel OK about that - as always I have had the weekend off and had wine and a cornetto last night. Back on it today. 😊

ponygirlcurtis · 10/06/2018 09:20

Acorn I have found Mackie's dark choc with mint to be very nice. 70% and about 31cals per square.

Oblomov18 · 10/06/2018 12:15

Errrr. Mine is not good. It goes up and down. A LOT. Over the last 2 years!! Grin

Oblomov mine would go up and down but I only record the downs!

Welcome new starters!

Over the last four years my weight has fluctuated by two stone. I'm currently the same weight as I was on 13 July last year, and then it dipped further as I went on holiday two weeks later and I was still trying to lose more. Even now I''m still 11lbs heavier than my lowest weight four years ago, and I'm 15lbs down since starting BSD.

I'm a daily weigher. If I stop weighing, it's because I'm kidding myself that all the crap I'm eating isn't making a difference to my weight. I also weigh in kilograms, and that sometimes doesn't help. It is much easier to go down a kg than a stone, so it sort of feels like it's going down faster, but I have to hold in my head what the equivalent weight in st and lbs is or I kid myself that it's not that bad when it actually is!

Snowglobes · 10/06/2018 17:53

So delighted with the idea of a gin with fizzy water.... 25ml of silent pool gin is 43g carbs!!! Shock. I’m still going to drink it now I’ve poured it. Note to self... check MFP BEFOREHAND !!! Hmm

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 10/06/2018 17:56

I'm back. Made very sensible food choices about 50% of the time. Think I've put on a couple of pounds but had a lot to deal with. I've noticed my attitude to food has really changed and a lot of the stuff I would usually view as a treat didn't even look like food to me! I also don't need to buy food wherever I go

Lots of walking, gardening and cycling in between all the other stuff so hopefully the damage won't be too bad. Anything less than 4lb on and I'll be very happy. Shall weigh in the morning and report back.

Was chatting to someone about this last night so if you're there lurking take the plunge and join us!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/06/2018 18:16

Snow either there’s a mistake with your post or there’s a mistake with your tracker because there’s no way 25ml of gin has 43g carbs in it- it only weighs 25g!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/06/2018 18:23

The mfp entry is wrong from what I can see from just a quick google

Diet doctor claims that all clear spirits are zero carb (gin, vodka, whisky etc), so unless you added sugary tonic or Fever-Tree you’ll be ok.

www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/alcohol

It’s rather frightening how quickly I abandoned my children to research this to make doubly sure that I am still allowed gin.

I'm loving the graphs! I'll need to work out how to download mine.

I haven't weighed in for the last few days but I had a few NSV this week. Firstly, my neighbour stopped me to say I looked like I had lost a lot of weight. Then my DM said I looked slimmer and was looking well. Smile

I'm ignoring the fact that my neighbour usually sees me bundled up in lots of layers, but I have been wearing summer dresses this week

Parsley1234 · 10/06/2018 21:00

Ok I’m in starting tomorrow ! I’m going to do protein shakes x 2 with berries and protein and veg plus either a run or class per day.
I did lighter life 8 years so lost 20lbs maintained brilliantly then stopped daily weighing for complacent and I’m back up to 11 10. Very annoyed with myself and hoping I can drop 10lbs before holiday in 3 weeks - so 800 cakes per day 2l water exercise and sub 50gr carbs is that right ?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/06/2018 21:41

Parsley welcome, very unfortunate autocorrect fail there - 800 cakes???!!! If only!!

I’ve really struggled today, I won’t lie. Yesterday’s carb fest, plus late night, plus due on, and I gave in to temptation and now feel mighty pissed off with myself. All in it’s been a pretty shocking week, so I’m just feeling a bit crappy, partly no doubt because of all the crappy food I’ve eaten. I don’t do this often anymore but I still hate it when I do. I seem to have lost my way a bit recently. I have lost that lovely BSD clear head.

But, look forward not back......7 weeks til summer holidays, still ample time to get to target (plus lose the extra few I’ve gained this weekend!) I’ve come on today so that should hopefully calm the cravings and mindless carb eating.

Menu is planned for the week so tomorrow I will hit the supermarket with Ds and really stock up. I’m going to do 2 meals a day, and try to increase my veg with meals as I don’t really get enough in. The scales are on the worktop to weigh every single thing. Last week I went virtually without any processed meat and without any sweetener, which I expected to be tricky but actually wasn’t that bad, although I don’t exactly love my coffee yet- I’m going to be carrying this on next week.

Not feeling very positive, but I’m ever the optimist- a few good BSD days under my belt and I know I’ll feel better. I’ve had a really busy few weeks and the next two are just as chaotic, with loads of school stuff, kids stuff, plus a massive backlog of domestic stuff too. A good day doing jobs tomorrow should help, plus also keep me busy and out of the kitchen!

Sorry for my woe is me post! Hope you all have a great week!

Parsley1234 · 10/06/2018 21:57

Haha 800 cakes that wd be a great plan ! Sounds like you’re done well though bear I know when I detail myself I lose confidence and that makes me eat crap which is a downward spiral ! I’m hoping to regain confidence quickly but I feal very worries about failing again !

ibuiltahomeforyou · 10/06/2018 21:58

Hi all, I'd love to join! Plan to start tomorrow and dive straight in!

I am 9 stone 7 but really need to kick the sugar cravings more than anything.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/06/2018 22:00

Welcome Ibuilt, the more the merrier. Looks like there’s a few of us starting fresh tomorrow, always good for motivation!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/06/2018 22:02

And thanks parsley, this is my first real derail where I’ve had unplanned rubbish for several days, I think I’m several months! It’s horrible how powerless i can feel but I know it can be easily turned around, I just need to do it.

BSD hat on!

OP posts:
BeforeLight · 10/06/2018 22:04

Hi everyone,

First day done - phew! Feeling a bit hungry now but hoping won’t be long until my body is used to it.

I followed the recipe plan in the book which was east as didn’t have to count the calories.

Going to try and track on my fitness pal but having looked at it it doesn’t look that straightforward? The measurements seemed American - lots of cups. Hopefully it’s just me and easy to change?

Snowglobes · 10/06/2018 22:33

Oh bear you are my hero!!! GIN NO CARBS!! YEAH!! I only put fizzy water in and a few slices of fresh limes - blooming lovely but only had one and made it last hours due to MFPs mis-calc. Thank you for neglecting your children... gin research much more important! You are giving yourself such a hard time! You were amazingly BSD on holiday. Dust yourself down and tomorrow’s another day!
beforelight click on ‘cup’ or whatever and you can usually change to grams etc. Be careful following the diet book as when I put the ingredients into MFP they can be miles out but given gin-gate today I’m now wondering how accurate MFP is.
APlace re-downloading your graph, I took a ‘screenshot’ then used the paper clip icon on here to attach it.

ponygirlcurtis · 10/06/2018 22:41

Well done on your first day Before. 😊 One word of caution about the recipes in the book - I have done a few and put it into MFP and not found them terribly accurate. With MFP I tend to use the exact supermarket name to get British weights in grams coming up first. I have found most things come up that way.
