Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

With your tracker app it could be that you need to change your settings to show UK. Not using mfp but on mine it was definitely all American until I changed to uk.

Thanks snow. I am very hard on myself. I think it’s just because I always fear that this is the bubble bursting and I don’t be able to get back into it. I know that’s stupid, really. Good news about the gin!!

So, another Monday morning. Ds up having nightmares so I ended up in his bed with him, and now I’m downstairs enjoying those few minutes of leave before the chaos begins. Quick weigh in suggests that my weekend of carnage has resulted in a rather large gain of 4lb!!!! Now I did eat a lot, but not 15,000 extra calories! So mostly water, I hope. I’ve now hidden the scales til Friday.

Going to fast today as long as I can, I think I’ve forgotten what hungry Feels like. Batch cooking some meals and some roasted veg today to add a bit of variety to my menu. I’ll run later on the treadmill and maybe do a bit of 30 day shred too.,

Have a great week!

APlaceAtTheBSDTable · 11/06/2018 07:28

Good morning bear ! Enjoy your batch cooking and your run/shred.
I have a busy work day ahead which is the closest I get to exercise atm!

AvonCallingBarksdale · 11/06/2018 07:58

Feeling sooo disheartened Sad Got on the scales first thing for weekly weigh-in and there’s NO change from week 1 (today is the start of week 3). I’ve had 4 glasses of wine over the weekend and a can of Pimms. Had a v small bowl of Doritos with Saturdays Skinny Chilli (max 8). But no change at all?? Really?? I know the BSD works cos I’ve done it before, I’m also due on, but I feel like rubbish now tbf. I could cry Sad

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/06/2018 08:26

Avon I find I retain a lot of water when I’m due on, so could it be that? Sounds counter productive, but drink lots today and weigh again tomorrow, it can help flush out the water retention!

Morning all ! Was dreading weigh in after a 4lb gain last week and was away this week eating and drinking but no a 2lb loss ! I did vlcd before and I remember after a gain came a loss if you get back on it. Bear I can empathise about the bubble I feal like that too god so much of this is head space and belief anyway I’m aiming for 10lbs in 3 weeks wish me a lot of luck x

PrimalLass · 11/06/2018 08:58

I didn't lose in week 3 either.

LunaTrap · 11/06/2018 09:10

Hi all. Well I joined this thread last week determined to get back on it but had a stressful week and it all went a bit wrong! Luckily I've managed not to gain but no loss either so I'm starting again today. I'm annoyed with myself though, did so well on this diet last year.

ponygirlcurtis · 11/06/2018 09:28

Avon I didn't lose in Wk 3 either, alcohol really pauses things for me. Definitely keep going, especially if you are due on. It will whoosh at some point soon.

Well done Parsley.

I am off work today as DS2 has had an upset stomach all weekend. I am already hungry... And day 3 of being stuck in the house. Cabin fever is setting in! Could do some batch cooking for the freezer I guess.

ATurnipOfMyOwn · 11/06/2018 11:15

Morning all - I've just caught up on everyone's news, and hereby declare it's gin all the way for me. I just cannot have one glass of wine.

So, it's the end of week 5 and I am down to 10st and a pesky half pound, so that is a total loss of 1st 3.5 lbs. Not bad considering I've been something of a booze-hound recently. I'm worried my scales aren't terribly accurate though - moving them a couple of centimetres can mean a 2lb difference, so I have to be very careful to put them in exactly the same place each time.

Went to an event at Wembley on Saturday with my daughter and could have cried when I discovered that all the food available was beige - chips, hot dogs, burgers etc. I ended up ordering a 'falafel dog', which was so revolting I took it back and asked for a refund. Luckily they took pity on me and offered me a free gluten-free salad which had hot smoked salmon, so I was very chuffed with that.

My NSV was that we had seats very, very high up and my fitbit recorded something like 40 floors that day, just from popping up and down to get drinks, go to the loo etc.

Trying to meal plan for this week - I'm sure my OH is getting fed up with the same few meals. But then he doesn't cook, or shop so he'll just have to put up with it. Another thing to add to his list of "things he's annoyed about" - he's being exhaustingly critical of us all at the moment, but that's another thread....

Oblomov18 · 11/06/2018 11:31

Also can't do just 1 glass of wine!! Wine

Haven't weighed, but I just feel I have lost. Despite the wine over the weekend.

Lunch: found some of my 5 spice chicken in the freezer, plus Sainsbury's pre made salad tubs, which I am living off atm.

Blood Sugar Diet thread 11
LunaTrap · 11/06/2018 13:07

Well it's 1pm and I've not failed yet! Had a lovely chicken salad for lunch but trying to ignore the carb cravings. Oblomov I always use pre made salad tubs, they are so handy. Although I came downstairs this morning and DP has prepped loads of fresh salad for me into various tubs to make it easier for me so I'm not tempted to give up and grab something more convenient.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/06/2018 13:20

I’ve just had tuna mixed with mashed avocado, lemon juice and chilli powder and a tsp mayonnaise and it was sooooo tasty on my salad. Really nice to have a change.

OP posts:
Hoviscats · 11/06/2018 15:43

ooh that sounds nice bear . Is that the recipe in the book? rings a bell... May try that tomorrow.

I had yoghurt and strawberries (picked on Saturday with the kids!) for breakfast and then met friends at an m&s cafe for lunch. Very limited options so had a tomato soup with out the bread that came with it.

The upside of the frugal lunch is that I have got 500 cals left for dinner so am going to have something as yet unidentified but substantial Grin

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 11/06/2018 15:54

Good day here - really nice salad with eggs, tuna and a chunk of cheese for lunch. Planning courgette ribbons with cream cheese, mushrooms, parmesan and green beans for supper. Cycled to work and back. Very hot now though!

I’m somewhere between ‘average 2 year old’ and ‘amount of cheese Americans eat in a year’. When I pick up my average two year old, that makes me realise how much I’ve lost because I cannot carry him any distance at all without struggling.

Hovis I didn’t get the recipe from the book, but it may be in there, I just threw a few things in!

No green beans as had ham instead to up the protein. Yum!

Blood Sugar Diet thread 11
veryveryquietly · 11/06/2018 17:24

I am having a whooshy few days after some weeks of hovering in the same 3 lb range, so am quite happy. Not that I'm doing anything that different, go figure.

Oh Turnip I feel you, what is it with there being nothing but beige food on offer at SO many places?

Speaking of which, had a nice 'protein box' from Pret today - not quite as big as their full sized (and carbolicious) salads, but bigger than the hardboiled eggs with spinach thing they have. Had chicken, avocado, hardboiled egg, some pumpkin seeds, a bit of green, and a nice chili sauce, and was around 370 calories and 7 gr carbs (counting the sauce), so perfect if you need a BSD compliant not huge lunch.

Shrinking thanks so much for that! I'm delighted to know that I've lost more than an elephant's penis-worth of weight since January, and that I will probably hit the Irish setter mark/5 stone this week. (Actually, I wish I had an Irish setter, as I'm sure that would help me walk/run/chase off even more of this poundage!)

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 11/06/2018 17:28

That was one of the best meals I've had on this diet. Absolutely delicious. 10 minutes fridge to plate. You're getting the recipe whether you like it or not:

Courgette carbonarish dish
3 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced
80g chestnut mushrooms sliced
10g butter
20g cream cheese
1 courgette cut into ribbons
1 large slice of ham cut into small pieces
10g parmesan cheese

Melt the butter on a medium heat, add onion and mushroom. Cook for two minutes. Add courgette. Cook for 2 minutes. Stir in ham and cream cheese and a good twist of sea salt and black pepper. Top with parmesan. Eat. Lick bowl. Total calories 343. Carbs 6g.

ChocEggNoThanks · 11/06/2018 18:29

Shrink love the weight loss list! Recipe sounds good too.

1lb on over the weekend, could have been worse. Today was going well but had a madly stressful afternoon in work and arrived home starving. I immediately ate 600 cals worth of cheese, Ryvita and an almond butter bar Hmm #idiot So, that was dinner for me tonight.

DandelionAndBedrock · 11/06/2018 18:37

Ok, my new goal is to lose an Encyclopaedia Brittanica. That’s such a good list!

Put half a pound on over the weekend - all bsd foods but I wasn’t super careful about portion size, hopefully it will come off. Am 3lb or so from my next half stone marker and I cant wait.

DandelionAndBedrock · 11/06/2018 18:38

and that courgette recipe sounds fab!

BeforeLight · 11/06/2018 18:39

Hope everyone’s had a good day?

Just wondering how you split your calories across a typical day? Do you split evenly across three meals? Miss meals out? Curious as to what best, particularly for staving off hunger.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/06/2018 18:55

Closing the kitchen at 938 cals, 39g carbs. We had butternut squash, bacon and goats cheese on spinach that was wilted down with black pepper and lemon juice. The second picture is my tray of roasted veg which I’ll divide into 4 once it’s cooked (135cal per portion) to go on my salads this week.

It’s been a really positive day today, feeling really motivated by some new foods.

OP posts:
TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 11/06/2018 19:29

Roasting veg in advance is a great idea and one that I've inexplicably not thought of!

Coming in at 797 calories and 12g carbs today. My lowest carbs ever! I'm usually up in the 70g-80g range.

Before - I was splitting it roughly 150/300/350 as I thought I really needed breakfast but I've been experimenting with 400/400 and it has felt loads easier. I eat at 12pm and 5pm.
