Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

It has been over a year now. I just stopped. Very strange as I loved my wine. Nothing like a glass of cold, dry white. But the hangovers got too much and I was trying to low carb.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/06/2018 09:17

We only drink red, but I find it very heavy sometimes. I don’t get hangovers but I do feel a bit sluggish the next day. Gin keeps me awake if I drink too much.

Sorry to hear things are tricky Amazing, hope the weekend is better.

Snowglobes what about a tray of roasted chicken drumsticks in a yoghurty marinade for the Saturday party? And for the Friday night I would just tell your friend you aren't eating pizza right now and suggest something different?

fish that's a brilliant NSV! Bet it felt good. 😊

I bought some halloumi - never had it before, do I have to cook it or do I just chop it up like normal cheese?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/06/2018 10:12

Pony it’s not very nice uncooked. You can cut thick slices and very gently pan fry them, but be careful not to over cook it or it goes a bit rubbery. Or you can cut into chip shapes and more intensively fry them until they are really crispy all over, more like chips.

I love halloumi but it takes a bit of practice to get it right.

wow fish that's amazing!

oblomov I also think scanning labels is a Good Thing and am glad I've started doing it, as I've been finding some crazy surprises. Also a surprise: my glasses aren't doing the trick for reading labels, leading me to squint my way around the grocery. Another reason to order groceries on line (and schedule optometrist visit).

primal and bear wine does me in too these days, as much as I love it. I've also moved to spirits and fizzy water as it's easier to stop with one. But this week I've been trying 60 ml cold white wine mixed with fizzy water and that's actually working well. I wouldn't do it with 'good' wine, but for the stuff I like with dinner it's a perfect tactic.

Snowglobes · 09/06/2018 11:16

Halloumi - I also cut into thick slices but grill it and only one side and not for long. Eat it straight away though as once cooled down is a bit rubbery. Also nice on the BBQ.
Yes, need to STOP the wine!!
What do you ladies drink to replace alcohol that’s interesting and not carb/sugar heavy.

Snowglobes · 09/06/2018 11:18

very you add fizzy water to gin and the like? Your white wine ‘spritzer’ is a fab idea!

abitoflight · 09/06/2018 12:58

Very that really is a good idea! Esp for me as my local only has fever tree tonic! And I'd never thought of that with wine
My Pinot Grigio comes in at 87 for 125mls but halving it would be great
Just had eggs florentine - gritty spinach 🤢 and it was £7.95!! Omitted bread
I'm on holiday for 4 nights next week so will just move to Mediterranean diet but I can have sparkling water in gin as don't do diet tonic in some holiday places

abitoflight · 09/06/2018 13:02

I have these - cool drinks taste much better and doesn't water it down

The Tesco Elderflower slimline tonic is my favourite. I like it with and without gin.

Oblomov18 · 09/06/2018 15:50

Pony, I include halloumi in my vegetable kebabs that I marinade in 5 spice, ginger and soy.

Oblomov18 · 09/06/2018 15:50

Old kitchen!

I do tend to do slimline tonic with gin if it's in the house but fizzy water with vodka, gin, even tequila etc works well if you plop in a fat slice of lime. Tonic still better with gin though, that's a pairing that is hard to beat.

But cutting the white wine w/ fizzy water really does help me; calories are more manageable and I don't fall asleep instantly (as I tend to do with straight wine these days, no tolerance any more).

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/06/2018 16:17

Oblomov we have those same units! I’m jealous you’re getting new ones, ours look set to stay for a good few years yet!

The less said about today’s food the better. I’ve just scoffed about half a packet of party rings. Plus party food. Plus generally not been very good.

Banish me to the naughty step for my own good, I can’t even stop myself!

Reading about gin and wine just makes me want a drink! I have promised myself a couple of gins next weekend when i will have done 2 weeks. Plus we are away for the weekend and although it wont be a foodie weekend so i shall stick to my calories, it would be nice to have a little treat!

Really craved a diet coke and a wispa today but i have stayed strong and have a fillet steak and slim line tonic to look forward to tonight!

DandelionAndBedrock · 09/06/2018 18:23

Nice to hear updates from everyone.

DP and I are with my parents this weekend, who want to try and do the diet as a 5:2, so I am cooking for everyone. Nice BSD lunch with poached eggs, and afterwards my mum fetches the chocolates... right now they are sitting in the garden with a g&t each and a bowl of crisps. I think I like whir approach more!

I’m a daily weigher and they don’t have scales here. I struggled without tracking my weight this morning but probably good to break the habit.

DandelionAndBedrock · 09/06/2018 18:23

Whir = their

BeforeLight · 09/06/2018 20:17

Hi, please can I join you?
I bought the MM book a few weeks ago, and decided to start tomorrow. Been out shopping and decided to follow the meal plan in the book for the first couple of days, so I don’t need to think too much about what to eat.

Feeling a bit anxious and also excited to get started. Am predicting withdrawal from carb symptoms as I’ve been overdoing everything bad recently.

Acorncat · 09/06/2018 21:13

Hi, hope you don’t mind if I join in Smile. I’m in week 2 of BSD, for weight loss mainly but also hoping to avoid diabetes that runs in the family. I lost 7lbs in week 1 but struggling more this week. My biggest problem is that I’m fussy Blush so limited on what I can eat. Getting enough fat is proving hard, I mostly have more protein which I know is wrong. I’ve felt pretty dizzy if I go out in the sun which is disconcerting, hoping that passes soon.

What dark chocolate is everyone using? All the ones I checked still had sugar added. I think I may be best avoiding anyway, I’ll end up eating the whole bar Sad

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/06/2018 21:29

Hi before, welcome!

I’m going for it from tomorrow too, I have literally mainlined sugar today. No word of a lie, I have eaten more sugar today than in the entire of this year added together. Yuck. My tongue feels burned, like when you eat too many boiled sweets.

This week’s been a bit hit and miss, too much going on, too much temptation around. I’m putting the kids back on the sugar free regime from tomorrow too because they were doing brilliantly and it’s all gone a bit awol. Time for a strict week me thinks....

Snowglobes · 09/06/2018 21:52

Ah bear hope DS’s party went well and you left some party rings for the kids! The booze ideas with fizzy water are fab as would never have thought of that. And loving the funky ice cubes too! Staying clear tonight though. Had a good day today, which is always tough at the weekend. Was very busy so accidentally missed lunch (never have b’fast anyway) and didn’t get around to making dinner until 7pm. Finally did the steak with roasted peppers, courgettes and a small portion of MMs coleslaw (totalling 407 cals). So with my milk for coffee well under 800 - which is fine given yesterday’s nightmare!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/06/2018 21:53

Hi acorn also, welcome. I don’t eat dark choc for exactly that reason, it seems like such a waste of calories as it’s not particularly nice!

OP posts:
Hoviscats · 10/06/2018 05:15

Hi acorn I am also new and only 6 days in. Not going to weigh until at least 2 weeks in though...I personally seem to find it easier to just plough on without knowing for as long as possible! Grin

I don't think the chocolate needs to be sugar free, just min 70% cocoa solids. I really like dark choxolate and I find that although I could demolish piles of milk chocolate in one sitting I can't do the same with the dark stuff so actually 120 cals worth is plenty. I like lindt or green and blacks and have been having a couple of pieces in the evening when calories allow!

Hoviscats · 10/06/2018 05:21

Hi before. Good luck with starting! I felt awful on days 2 and 3 but the fog lifted on day 4 thankfully! I felt fine all day yesterday (day 6) so I think my body is now adjusting to the lack of carbs/sugar/caffeine (I gave up diet coke too and dont drink tea or coffee anyway).

Not going to lie I am having to fight cravings for biscuits etc when the dc have them but so far my willpower ia proving strong!
