Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

I'm definitely not pregnant. Thank God! It's funny what your body asks for when you really start listening to it, isn't it?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/07/2018 19:15

Apparently acetic acid helps your body process vitamins better, so if you crave vinegar it might be worth taking a multi vitamin supplement?

I've been taking old lady vitamins so hopefully that's all ok. One of the reasons for starting to eat well was my iron being too low to give blood. Trying again on the 25th. Fingers crossed!

ChocEggNoThanks · 03/07/2018 20:20

Hello from our hols 😊 Just checking in. Trying to avoid the Big Bad 5 and having one treat a day. That's the plan anyway!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/07/2018 20:23

Kitchen closing on 1080 cals, 49g carbs. I’ve done 19k steps (ran 5k this morning and did 40 minutes circuits too)

I’d have come in under 800 if I hadn’t ended up having extra grazings (2 slices of cheese and 2 slices of ham at about 4pm) - definitely hungrier if I eat early breakfast, even though it was eggs. I’m hoping tomorrow I can hold out til lunchtime.

Tomorrow’s plan: kefir smoothie, feta salad, chicken with a Gorgonzola and mushroom sauce, and yogurt with berries, plus an egg as a snack. That seems like quite a lot for my 8(50), I think I might have been making it hard on myself by using so many calories on cheddar cheese! I am drinking lots as well in the heat which i hope is helping too.

Closing the kitchen today at 865 cal 68g carbs. On a school trip tomorrow so ham & cream cheese and an apple for lunch. I'm knackered and battered and really want to call in sick.

FlightyMare · 03/07/2018 21:44

Hello, I'm just checking in to say hi as I'm currently reading the book and am planning on starting imminently. I'm reading back over the earlier threads at the mo, but wanted to mark my place here on the current thread too if that's ok?

I'm an absolutely terrible eater, constantly grazing on sugary snacks and junk carbs, with a lack of any real meals, so something has got to change! I'm slim build, around a 10/12, but I measured around my gut at the weekend and at 89cm it puts me firmly in the danger zone. My blood sugar monitor arrived today so I'll be busting that open on Saturday morning to see what my glucose levels are looking like..!

I hate cooking so I'll be planning the most simple of meals possible. Not sure I'll be able to strictly stick to the 800 cals, but even following low carb med diet will be a vast improvement.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/07/2018 21:47

Welcome flightymare, I’m impressed that you’ve got a glucose meter, do you have type 2 diabetes or is that just to monitor out of interest? You’ll get good results if you’re going from a sugar-filled diet to a med style one! Good luck!

FlightyMare · 03/07/2018 21:59

No it's just one so I can monitor my levels and hopefully see an improvement to keep me motivated, it was under £15 from Amazon. I have absolutely no idea what my blood glucose levels are, so it will be interesting to find out!

FlightyMare · 03/07/2018 22:00

I've also just ordered an omlette maker Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/07/2018 22:15

Well, it sounds like you’re all set then!!!! Grin

An omelette maker?
I had a shocking day yesterday and have out on 2lbs overnight. Went to Wimbledon - 3 glasses of wine, possibly 4, health salmon salad, strawberries and cream, 4 pimms - very sweet. Seriously not good but Would have probably been ok ish if I’d not got home to encounter an Indian takeaway on the kitchen table!! Doomed!!

veryveryquietly · 04/07/2018 10:17

Yesterday was amazing until about 11:30 pm when the chocolate and wine came out, as dear friend visiting and we got to chatting. But still ended day around 1200 cals and 60 gr carbs, which isn't horrible.

Definitely making time for a long walk today!

Snowglobes I think you are allowed to indulge at Wimbledon. 😊 Bet it was an amazing day.

bear, where do you get your kefir from, is it available from supermarkets? I bought apple cider vinegar from Holland and Barrett the other day to see if it helps.

I am still maintaining but away on holiday next week so expecting a bit of a gain from that. I have my meals all planned out - going to do Harrisa chicken and have the leftovers over a couple of nights - and taking tuna, eggs and salad with mayo for lunches.

Snowglobes · 04/07/2018 20:18

Kefir leaves are available at supermarkets.
I had left over curry for dinner with RICE! Yes with RICE! Hanging my head in shame as not eaten rice since Easter! Obviously didn’t weigh it or put it on MFP either. Cross as made a BSD tortilla especially. But given my hangover the leftover curry was incredibly appealing.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/07/2018 20:38

Kitchen closing on 960 cals, 40g carbs. 16k steps (5.5km run this morning)

I’m finding my groove now, my stripped away menu is working really well for me. There’s the option to be flexible with timings/snacks but basically it’s all sorted out in Advance so there’s less opportunity to cheat. Today I’ve had 2 fried eggs with cherry tomatoes, a feta cheese salad, and I’ve just had a chicken breast, pea purée, asparagus and a Gorgonzola and mushroom sauce. Very tasty!

Pony I get my kefir from the polish section at Asda, it’s in a tetrapak carton like milk. I’ve also bought full fat live yoghurt from there much cheaper than Asda’s own version which I use sometimes and we have as dessert. I try and have two portions of live yog a day.

A friend of mine wound down her window today on the school run to tell me I looked amazing, I was so chuffed and very touched, and it certainly gave me a boost! I am seeing an old friend for lunch on Friday who I haven’t seen since January so it will be interesting to see what she says about the ‘new me’ !

Snow kefir leaves ??! Talk to me about kefir leaves- i thought it was like yoghurt, a milk culture/bacteria thing?? I did not know there were leaves involved!

Can I join in? On day 18 - thanks to all the support on this thread...

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/07/2018 21:42

Welcome seaside, how are you finding it? Have you lost much in your 18 days?

OP posts:
Snowglobes · 04/07/2018 21:43

Oops!! Apologies all. I was thinking kaffir lime leaves.

Seasidedreamer · 04/07/2018 21:57

Have not weighed in! I do not want to at the mercy of a number as will be over excited at losses/ demoralised by a gains or plateau (ridiculous I know) so was thinking of doing a check at about the half way point.

I picked up interest in the diet after watching the truth about carbs, bought the book and then have been lurking while working out whether I could do it!

Averaging about 850 cals per day and trying to stick to 50g carbs and find it best to not eat till lunch as breakfast just seems to make me hungrier. Days 4/5/6 were pretty awful but otherwise much easier than I expected.

Would like to lose around 2 stone which would put me back to where I was about 10 years ago pre pregnancies.

There have been some fantastic losses on here so well done to everyone. I’m not sure I would have contemplated doing this without all the advice and humour here!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/07/2018 22:17

Are you not even tempted for a little weigh in?? That’s serious resolve. I promised myself I’d not weigh this week but now I’ve had 3 good days I’m really tempted!!

Oh and I heard something mentioned on here, a documentary on YouTube called ‘the complete skinny on obesity’ all about carbs/insulin and thought it sounded right up our street...!! I have a child free day on Friday so I might try and watch it then.

Hoviscats · 04/07/2018 22:22

Hi seaside! I also didn't weigh in until week 4 and I have found it much better as not getting hung up on the scales. I have a similar amount of weight to lose as you and managed to shift 17lb in first 4 weeks so it is definitely doable!

I am thinking of doing a week 6 weigh in as I am interested in knowing how its going but i will decide next week. In middle of week 5 currently.

Good luck!!
