Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Good luck with the week ahead bear hopefully that loss is motivating - despite the ups and downs you seem massively determined. Your scale story made me laugh (sorry!), reminds me of the time I thought I'd put weight on but it turned out the cat was stood behind me with two paws on the scale.

And good luck to everyone else this week. It's the start of week 5 for me, my plateau seems to (hopefully) be on the move...only dropped by 1lb but after a week of no movement at all I'm hoping it will nudge down faster.

Oblomov18 · 02/07/2018 09:30

I've made salad for work. Good start.

Oh. And these are my 2 new chopping boards. Cheery, I think.

Hi - Thinking of trying this so putting down a place holder. Would like to loose a few kilos before starting IVF next month. Have left it a bit late!

The diet sounds quite up my street, I did something similar when recovering from CFS, but I will miss my oatcakes ...

Did you find it hard cutting out the carbs? Did you go cold turkey or do it over a few weeks?

Thanks :-)

ponygirlcurtis · 02/07/2018 10:35

That's brilliant Freudian. Well done. 😊

Love those chopping boards, Oblomov, especially the rainbow one.

bear you sound really determined. Go for it. I went for my first run in ages yesterday, really enjoyed it.

Since I have indulged in more wine now I am on holiday I have jumped back up a couple of pounds. I know I haven't eaten an extra 7,000 calories but it is really interesting to see - the sugar in the wine plays havoc with my body and makes me feel hungry even after a decent dinner.
Will be doing lots of walking today and staying alcohol-free.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 02/07/2018 10:35

Hi everyone. Weighed this morning, which is the beginning of week 5 and I’m down 11 lbs, so happy with that. Ran 2.5k this morning and feel like I shifted a few lbs in sweat Blush.
Welcome ChooChoo2 This is my second round of doing the 8-week plan. Both times I’ve had a headache for the first 3 days or so. Not awful but niggling. Make sure you drink PLENTY of water. My headache has always lifted and then all fine - even when not losing weight (because my portions are too big) I’ve felt better on the BSD plan; more energy, better skin, overall feeling of being healthier.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 02/07/2018 10:38

Love the chopping boards Oblomov
Have a good day everyone Smile

veryveryquietly · 02/07/2018 14:15

Ooh, lovely bright chopping board Oblomov - and your lunch looks rather like mine, right down to the same container! I'm having some sauteed courgette and the mango-coconut-lime marinated chicken breast from Ocado on a bed of salad leaves and baby spinach.

Of course, in a vile, never ending meeting this morning, I ate a mini dark chocolate bar. It was that or run screaming from the room, which, admittedly, would have expended calories rather than taking more in. But sadly, running away was not a possibility, so frustrated chocolate consumption it was. At least it was just a mini bar (35g)

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 02/07/2018 16:41

Choochoo2 - good luck! I'd advise reading through these threads. Everybody is kind and helpful without being enablers so it's a great place to hang out.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/07/2018 18:21

Kitchen closed on 879 cals, 39g carbs. I’ve done 17k steps (5km run). Food: kefir, berry and spinach smoothie; feta salad for lunch; chicken salad with oil and balsamic; full fat yoghurt with raspberries; plus I have allowed 2 eggs which I didn’t eat for breakfast but may snack on this evening. I seem to have had a lot for my calories today! I’ve definitely increased my protein and have had less ‘wasted’ calories on things like slices of cheese and ham. Really good start to the week.

Thanks TheAmazingShrinkingWoman and AvonCallingBarksdale. I will read through the threads, looks as though they contain lots of helpful advice and experience.

Thenewaveragebear1983 - that food looks amazing, my mouth is watering! Can't believe how few calories it contains.

It's going to be difficult to this too strictly over the next couple of weeks as I'm traveling but I'll get as close as I can and start proper once I get back.

veryveryquietly · 02/07/2018 19:36

Crappy day here - stressful work day meant over 800 cals and 40 gr carbs and haven't had dinner yet, but am starving. I'm thinking salt and pepper prawns with some broccoli for dinner - tasty, lots of protein, happy green veg, and may at least keep things nearish 1000 cals.

So much for launching a super strict cycle this week! Still, could be much worse, tomorrow is another day, and at least I've done lots of steps today. Gotta just keep putting one foot in front of another on this thing!

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 02/07/2018 20:07

1000 calories is pretty damn good, Very!

Closing the kitchen here (it feels very helpful to type that, thanks Bear!) on 771 cals 86g carbs.

I had ham wrapped round cucumber and cream cheese with cherry tomatoes and a cathedral city mini followed by berries with a dollop of creme fraiche for lunch. Supper was chicken curry with brown rice & quinoa followed by more berries and a frozen smoothie ice lolly. Very carby day but I was really struggling and needed them I think. Also it's boiling hot and cold berries are awesome!

Will go for more protein tomorrow. First 8 week cycle finishes on Friday 13th. Then were away from 4pm that Friday to 4pm Sunday. I'm trying to plan a bit but booze will be involved. I'm cooking on the Friday night so will make a low carb version for me. Saturday lunch can be ham/cheese etc quite easily. Saturday pm is BBQ so again can keep that sensible. Sunday cooked brunch so will have bacon/egg/mushroom/tomatoes. Then will eat when we get home. Will put leftover curry and rice in freezer I think. I'm not going to calorie count for the weekend but will stick to two meals and no snacking and try to avoid the evil white stuff.

I then plan to start the next 8 week cycle (on Monday 16th if anyone wants to start a super strict regime with me) which will take me to the start of term. I have no idea how I will manage in the summer holiday but I plan to use the gym lots. It's a good incentive when you don't see your colleagues for 6 weeks and can transform yourself!

Phew, sorry for the essay!

veryveryquietly · 02/07/2018 20:20

thanks amazing - it is so weird how after doing this for a while you end up going, "ugh, 1100 cals, that is so much" when really it totally, totally is not. I guess if this is a bad day, I will glory in it!

Ended up closing the kitchen at 1115 cals, 49 gr carbs. Which includes what I am thinking of as a medically necessary application of chocolate earlier today, so not really terrible at all.

And the salt and pepper prawns recipe from the book (I think it's from the book) is good, esp w/ 100 gr of steamed broccoli added. Cost prohibitive to cook for the family, but great for one or two.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 02/07/2018 20:25

I cook all my own yummy and v expensive meals at the mo. The rest of the clan had fish fingers tonight Grin

DandelionAndBedrock · 02/07/2018 23:31

I’m feeling quite puffy and bloated today, and have been really hungry. I texted my friend to moan about my weight being “all over the shop this week” and got “what, all ONE DAY of it?” as a reply. Helped me gain some perspective - 6 more days for improvement!

chrispenrallt1 · 03/07/2018 05:49

I’ll be in with you amazing. I think we started round about the same time, 21 st May for me. I don’t always stick to the book , like yourself I like to make recipes for myself.
Bear I’m sure you will be spurring us on with your efforts this week.
Just back from dog walking and 2 lb off for me this week!
Very you are doing great, well done on only having 1 chocolate bar

Snowglobes · 03/07/2018 06:45

Morning!
Everyone seems to be doing very well!
I’ve been 10.11.6 (69kg) for 2 weeks. I’m not weighing food but have been sensible bar a couple of wines here & there. So I’m happy that it’s static rather than up. We go on hols on Sat & whilst I’d like another stone off I don’t think loosing whilst away is realistic so I’m aiming to maintain. It’s catered so I won’t have control over the food and it’s a poor country so could be carb heavy BUT I can keep alcohol lowish. it could be fairly active as we’re hiking and kayaking (but who knows... maybe be more like strolling & floating). On my return I’ll get back to 800 cals and weighing my foods. But it'll be a week after you amazing.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/07/2018 08:29

Morning all,
Felt really good after my good start yesterday. Ran this morning, although there is something wrong with my Fitbit tracker, either due to the heat or due to the particular route having bad signal as it’s not tracking my distance very well. So it gave me the rage as it was saying I’d done 2km when I’d really done 4!!

I’m going to stick with my protein plan, so had 2 hard boiled eggs for breakfast, will have tuna salad for lunch, and we have masala fish for dinner. I am lucky to have a very multicultural Asda and I’ve been trying lots of new things from the world foods. We have a big Caribbean section, a polish section and an Indian section- if nothing else, tinned beans and herbs and spices are significantly cheaper , and full fat dairy products are often a lot cheaper in the polish section and have fewer additives. (Plus if you’re lucky, a beautiful, chiselled Eastern European man will translate the language for you Grin)- anyway, I digress.... but basically I have delicious Indian spiced fish for dinner, and polish kefir for my smoothie later on.

It’s another hot one today. I’m taking Ds to the local park/lake for a walk before it gets too scorching as we’re getting a bit bored of just lolling around like cats in the sun!

Horrible day at work in which my 1:1 child scratched and slapped me. But I don't want to eat my feelings which is a huge breakthrough. Just got home and contemplating watching tv in cold bath before supper. Am down to 13 st 11 lb - 18.8 pounds off or just over 8.5 kg.

DandelionAndBedrock · 03/07/2018 16:01

Well done Amazing - that’s a massive emotional breakthrough. I’m school based too - those days are tough.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/07/2018 16:45

Well I’m hot, pre-menstrual, carb craving and incredibly grouchy this afternoon. Ds whinging all afternoon. Aaaaaarrrrrggggghhhhh!!! Food is not the answer I know, but it’s very tempting right now to stuff down my feelings!

But no- instead I’m going to prep a quiche for tomorrow, and do the dinner to have early before the football. And hope that it makes my carb rage die down a bit!

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 03/07/2018 16:52

H is currently making me a cheese and ham omlette. My sole concession to my shitty day will be two tablespoons of ketchup with it - really craving that vinegary sweetness.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/07/2018 17:32

Mmmm I love vinegar! When I was pregnant with both my boys I used to crave vinegar, and would even drink spoonfuls of the beetroot vinegar! Needless to say I had the most horrific heartburn!
