Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

And as if on cue, I'm starting another 8-week cycle today of stricter BSDing. Today finished at 826 kcal, 33 gr carbs . Not bad for the first day back on.

Morning everyone, it’s July, can you believe it?!

Welcome Annie, good luck.,

I’m putting my hands in the air and saying I’ve struggled in June. It’s been chaotic: looking back, I’ve had some great days and good losses, and then some great /awful weekends with their accompanying gains.
Result:maintain - but without any nice feeling of control or competence. I have yo-yo-ed my way to a maintain, and it could have gone either way!

I feel like I need a bit of a regroup; get my head back together. A back to basics bit of strict BSD time! It’s my birthday mid-July so I’m using that as a little mini target, and see what I can achieve in those few weeks.

On the one hand, I’ve got the Basics sorted; I think it’s my mindset than needs work! I’ve developed a very bad habit of just saying ‘go on then’ when the kids are having something, a bit like amazing was saying earlier, which in itself would probably be ok, and then in the evenings I am totally losing the plot as a result of having too much fruit or sugar. But I’m eating it knowing it will happen.

Welcome Hope. My tuppence worth - I have 2 white coffees between 7 and 1 (50 cals), eat my first meal at lunchtime and my second at dinner. The first few weeks I never got below 950 cals a day and still had good weight loss. Just avoid the 5 bad guys - bread, pasta, rice, sugar and potatoes. I put potatoes last as baby boiled ones didn't send me on a mad sugar rampage but they are very high in cals for what you get. I can also eat a few dark rye ryvita or a small pack of crackers as long as I have them with eggs, cheese or hummus but maybe skip them the first few weeks.

This is all when I'm doing it properly, rather than when in a massive sunshine eat all the things frenzy! But you will be surprised how quickly your tastes and appetite will reset. Even my 'binges' now are much smaller comparatively speaking and few and far between. Just log everything on MFP or similar apps and never lie to yourself about what you have eaten.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 01/07/2018 12:34

I have now lost 17.5 lb. Feeling extremely focussed! Trying not to regret the days off I've had but reckon I've still got a tiny chance of hitting my target of 2 stone in 8 weeks.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/07/2018 13:36

Amazing that’s great. How many weeks left?

I’ve given the menu a lot of thought for this week, streamlined it and cut out pretty much everything that leads me astray (cheese, snacky pork products, peanut butter, Greek yogurt, nuts....) resulting in a very simple Menu of: eggs for breakfast, salad and protein for lunch, protein and either veg/salad for evening meal, plus 1 serving of probiotic yoghurt each day. Water/green tea/coffee (milk counted). No fruit except occasional berries. It’s a bit like my own mini boot camp. By doing this though, I’ve basically cut out all the thought. Two eggs for example - hard boiled, scrambled, omeletted - same calories each day. Salad, negligible; protein- say 200 cals worth at lunch/dinner; veg counted but it’s never going to be huge is it? No one got fat eating too much broccoli....

I’m trying to gear myself up for a dry July (at least until my birthday and the kids break up; I’m not insane) - but not sure how this will work out. Dh tends to drink more during the World Cup and this spreads to me. But I could maybe go wine free for July and drink gin instead

I sound like I’ve had some major epiphany here, but let’s face it, what I am saying is I’m actually going to follow the plan. I need to tighten the reins a bit.

Annie you asked about breakfast? I don’t normally eat a breakfast at ‘breakfast time’ but recently I have been finding that my body still wants 3 meals. So on days when I have lunch at 12, by 5 I’m hungry so eat with the dc, but then I’m still wanting something in the evenings and because I’m not planning this well I end up eating too much of the wrong thing. I’m hoping that my structured menu above will help because there’s actually 4 ‘meals’ in there if I count the yogurt separately. That should keep me going longer, plus I can then delay my evening meal to stave off the evening munchies. It’s all trial and error though isn’t it; I suggest playing around with it to find what works for you. Eating first thing definitely wakes up my appetite.

My running schedule doesn’t help either, I need fuel now for my runs and I simply wasn’t giving myself enough - my body fat is much lower now which can’t help as my reserves are low (so appetite increases) , plus trying to run long distances on no food is not ideal, and oh boy does my appetite compensate for it?!

My final piece of the jigsaw is sleep. I need more of it. I plan To go to bed at 10 or earlier every day for a week, then set my alarm for 6 to run before the hot sun every day.

So that’s my boot camp plan!

veryveryquietly · 01/07/2018 14:31

Sounds like an excellent plan bear - you can always scramble the eggs around a handful of baby spinach, and add a spoonful of good salsa for a kick. I find adding the spinach and salsa (and occasionally 10 gr of shredded cheese) bumps eggs up to a meal quite nicely, while adding only minimally to carbs and cals. (Cheese of course adds more fat w/ protein, but for me a tiny amount of cheese or creme fraiche makes eggs so much lush.)

For summer I've switched from hot herbal tea/fruit infusions to iced versions of same. A nice change from plain water, can be mixed with sparkling to give the sparkling a bit of a punch too. Is also a fast way to actually make a dent in some of the gazillion boxes of fruit infusions/herbal teas cluttering up my cabinets.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/07/2018 15:29

That sounds good very

I vaguely recall the green tea smoothie in the book being quite nice- I think it’s frozen blueberries, almond milk and then a ‘shot’ of really strongly infused green tea (make a small cup with boiled and cooled water, only about 50ml, leave for a while then add to the smoothie mix). I’m terrible for buying herbal and fruit teas, they always sound lovely and smell delicious and then one cup in, they all taste wishy washy!

I had a weekend away with friends and drank some wine and fizz, but mainly water. My friends are supportive but worried I am too blinkered by the diet, so there were lots of attempts at covert wine topping up. The food was fairly BSD friendly (pure luck - Moroccan style sharing dishes so easy to get away with salads and a bit of protein). Haven’t eaten today yet, though, feeling v smug that I avoided the hungover bacon sandwiches everyone else inhaled. AND I managed to lose half a pound overnight, so not a total sabotage!

DandelionAndBedrock · 01/07/2018 15:46

Annie I was 16st2 in September, and managed to get down to 15st1 by myself but kept losing and gaining the same half stone beyond that, so started BSD in April at 15st 1. I’m now 11st8 - two pounds away from my healthy weight upper limit - which I literally didn’t imagine was possible. Good luck!

ChocEggNoThanks · 01/07/2018 17:35

Bear your plan sounds like a good one! Might adopt it when back from holidays.

Very excellent idea about the herbal teas. I have dozens of them in a bag would be good to use them up!

Dandelion well done on your weight loss. That's an amazing achievement and really inspiring. My BMI was scratching 35 when I started and is now just over 30. I will have to choose ultimately between lower BMI with loose skin or higher BMI with less loose skin. I would love to lose another 1.5 stone which would be around BMI 27. I could live with that. Did you have any loose skin? I'm in my forties so won't bounce back as well.

chrispenrallt1 · 01/07/2018 17:49

Dandelion that’s a great weight loss.
Amazing you have done amazing!
Bear you have spurred me on over my 6 weeks and I think your plan is a winner.
Just reading this thread and other people’s stories and experiences is great. I have picked up loads of ideas and gained encouragement from reading and I think we all have a story to tell

DandelionAndBedrock · 01/07/2018 19:40

choc I don’t think I do have much loose skin, no...certainly no more than before. I do think I have some new stretch marks though, which seems unfair. Can you get them from weight loss?

I have upped my exercise in a big way, though. Before I started I did 2 or 3 sessions a week, now I do 6 and sometimes 7, so I think that has helped with toning up?

DandelionAndBedrock · 01/07/2018 19:41

I meant to say, that’s a brilliant loss, well done!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/07/2018 20:00

Dandelion you can definitely get stretch marks from weight loss. I find with regards to the loose skin, the places where you have stretch marks will be less quick to go back, but other places will shrink back over time. My post giant babies pregnancy stomach is like crepe paper now as I had so many stretch marks, but it is gradually becoming more taut. They fade but never go completely, but they obviously weaken the skin so it never quite recovers.

Also worth bearing in mind, because you lose weight so fast on this diet, you can get a bit of a ‘popped balloon’ appearance going on at first, which can be a bit disconcerting. It does balance out after a while!!

Hoviscats · 01/07/2018 20:14

Sounds like everyone is doing really well! I think this must be the most positive weight loss thread I have seen on here Smile.

I had a planned weekend 'off' after my 4 week weigh in mark but althoigh i have had a few treats and some wine last night I really haven't binged and i have actually wanted to drink water and eat salad. I even turned down a magnum without even thinking about it. Bizarre!!

Looking forward to getting totally back in to it tomorrow and seeing how much I can lose over the next 4 weeks. I am going to get back in to more exercise again too as apart from a few long walks I havent done a great deal. I am hopeful though that 16lb down, running should be a bit easier going again!!

Good luck everyone for another good week. Grin

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 01/07/2018 21:20

Just shy of 2 weeks to go, Bear.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/07/2018 21:26

I’m not doing well Hovis, I’m doing bloody awfully and I can’t even stop myself. I’m like a tapeworm; anything that comes into my vicinity will be eaten.

However, I am determined to get back on it tomorrow. A funny thing happened earlier: I went for a run and was getting in the shower and thought I’d weigh myself again. Stepped on the scales and it said 9st11!!!! Now bear in mind that about a stone lighter than I was this morning!! The thoughts that flicked through my head were:
-ooooh this must be wrong

  • oh, but what if it’s Right??? What if the scales have been wrong all this time???!
Moved the scales and they were resting on a bit of broken tile grout and low and behold, 10.9 again.

But do you know what??!! For that blissful moment, I was so chuffed, and it’s spurred me on to see 9’s on the scales!!!!!

ah bear that did make me laugh! I know you have had a tough couple of weeks but just think how well you have done already!! Honestly when i joined this thread I was so impressed with your progress it was one of the things that convinced me to give it a try and i am so glad i did.

I am sure you will smash it this week. Flowers

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/07/2018 21:44

Ah thanks hovis, that’s very kind. It’s just a bad phase for me, I’ve had a really good run of a few months but the last few weeks I’ve felt my willpower and self control slipping away a bit. It’s not the food, it’s my head- I need to get back into that strong mindset where I don’t even want the rubbish; it’s not a chore then.

It’s not mind over matter, it’s mind over MOUTH !!!

I am wholly geared up to SMASH IT this week though, and I know you’re all With me!!

OP posts:
veryveryquietly · 02/07/2018 05:10

Yesterday not bad: 917 cals, 30 gr carbs. But hungry hungry all last night and now this morning, so caved and had a bit of yogurt and berries. Lunch already packed and dinner planned though, so hopefully I can manage another day on plan - - ish. Must avoid cappuccinos and chocolate (my downfalls)!

Scale still holding steady where it was 12 days ago, before family and business trips, which is better than gaining. But really hoping to get it moving down again this week, as I still have a ways to go.

Hope everyone has a good day!

Lallypopstick · 02/07/2018 06:38

Start of week 3 for me. Has anyone got any good packed lunch ideas? I've been having either tuna salad or making the sardine pate from the book, except with mackerel instead. Hoping to add some variety so I don't get bored.

Oblomov18 · 02/07/2018 06:42

Morning everyone.
I have put on 2lbs. Having lost it the week Before.
On the hottest weekend EVER I was at ds1's Football tournament all Saturday afternoon and then Ds2's football tournament Sunday 1-6pm where I ate a cheeseburger with extra cheese, bacon and onions! Blush

Back on it today!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/07/2018 07:19

Weighed in at 10.7.8 this morning. It says a lot about my recent behaviour that I actually don’t know if that’s a loss or gain from last Monday. I know it’s about the middle of my yo-yo range.

High hopes for this week: been for run this morning and am planning to do so every day this week. Food planned and cal counted. Head firmly back in the game? We’ll see!

Have a great week everyone!

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/07/2018 07:23

From scrolling through the past few weeks, I reckon I’m about 3lb down this week, (which is actually not bad at all, considering!) but as I’m so up and down I’m not claiming that as a victory! Could be up 5lb by tomorrow!
