Thank you @Londonista I'm thinking of doing it but maybe at 1000 not 800 - I'm going to trundle off and visit the official website and see if I can glean any advice from there :)

I just did a 10k run (very very slowly!) which I really enjoyed, and so far today have only had a black coffee so far today - my usual running routine, as I get stitch unless I run on an empty stomach.

Heading out for lunch shortly but I've picked a cafe that does amazing low carb salads, so that should be easy - so tricky to eat out at cafes and stuff normally, I agree.

Tonight I'm planning to have chicken wrapped in bacon with courgetti griddled in a dollop of homemade pesto and maybe some other veg.

Imagine the weekend is going to be tough, and we usually do friday night movie night with popcorn and gin and tonic so I might have to investigate some good low carb snacks even though I know snacking isn't really advised.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/03/2018 12:36

Welcome why! I have pcos which is strongly linked with insulin resistance, so I have definitely noticed improvements in the other symptoms of that, but can’t advise on the fertility! Like you say, losing weight can’t hurt (especially if you are overweight to begin with?) but maybe once you’re actively TTC you’d need to have a few more calories?

Having a really busy morning cleaning and doing chores, done 12k steps already!! Just had a nice lunch of avocado, chorizo, salad and cheese. Going for coffee after the school run with some friends and dc, to a place that does the nicest cakes in the world. I’m really craving sugar at the moment, which is weird, because I feel like I’m properly ‘fat adapted’ now and don’t really feel hungry per se. I just keep having daydreams about chocolate. Dark choc doesn’t do anything for me at all, and I don’t think I’ll be unable to control it, but about three times today I’ve found myself gazing into space and thinking about galaxy ripple bars. Very odd.

Also why, just seen that you have run 10k! Definitely increase your calories. Play around with it a bit, that’s what I’m currently doing, but intensive exercise and 800 cals do not mix. I have learned this to my disadvantage because after my initial few weeks of it working, I suddenly found running very hard, and also didn’t lose much, and ended up having a weekend long ‘feed’ (didn’t blow out and have loads of carbs, but just ate LOADS) , and regained 4lb. My body just fought back! I am finding this week as I’ve been having more cals in running days, it just feels so much easier.

whyistherumgone · 16/03/2018 12:49

@thenewaveragebear1983 hi :) Thanks for the advice - I think maybe I will try and tweak the calories, still low carbing, in that case as I do like to run - I tend to run minimum every other day minimum distance 5km and max 10km so don't want to burn out or do myself any damage.

Sadly running doesn't seem to be having any effect weightloss wise although I do feel better for it, so that's why I wanted to get a more structured diet plan in place as I find low carb relatively easy.

Your lunch sounds amazing bear - love avocado and chorizo! Cakes in coffee shop are a nightmare, especially as they're always sitting right at the till!

yumyumpoppycat · 16/03/2018 16:27

Ok I am going to bore the pants off everyone sorry!
Whyis -
I would look into pregnancy nutrition and take a supplement along side reading BSD book if you are trying to conceive dc1. The actual med style diet in the book with higher cals is probably a good pregnancy option. Following the BSD for 1-2 weeks would probably be fine and you would get a decent chunk off hopefully, but as you aren't that overweight and are trying to conceive it's probably not a good idea to go as low as 1000 for anything like 8 weeks for a few reasons:
*you might end up low on certain vitamins and minerals

  • low cals for several weeks might put your body under unnecessary stress which isn't optimum for pregnancy *you might just gain the weight back in pregnancy - anecdotally I gained the least (actually lighter after giving birth than pre pregnancy) when I started off the pregnancy the heaviest
londonista · 16/03/2018 16:42

I know losing weight this fast isn't recommended but after weeks of scepticism, I'm managing it okay. I take a multivitamin, omegas, and a fybogel sachet, and since I've gotten myself into a routine, I'm genuinely feeling fine.
Everyone is different though, and certainly if you have any, even mild, underlying medical conditions, I'd get advice.

I think the key to success is managing your transition onto a post BSD eating plan, given it's likely you'll need fewer calories to maintain. I find it a little depressing I might never really be able to enjoy chips and bread the way I once did (ideally in a butty! Grin) but equally, I have 3 people depending on me staying healthy so it's a worthwhile sacrifice.

Please feel free to quote all this back to me when I'm crying to you that I've regained all my BSD weight... Blush!

whyistherumgone · 16/03/2018 17:13

Thanks @yumyumpoppycat that sounds like a sensible way of doing things - can I stick around on the thread still pretty please? :)
I've definitely going to need the support!

Sounds like you're doing well @londonista! My concern wasn't feeling rubbish or anything, but just cutting calories so drastically might affect my cycle when TTC.

Good advice here though, I'm going to sit down with the book tonight.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/03/2018 17:24

Londonista definitely agree re: the post-BSD maintenance plan, and it’s one thing that this diet is sadly lacking in. I have come to the conclusion that carbs and me do not mix. I envisage a future where they remain an occasional treat, with general med style eating most of the time and a couple of fast days a week to maintain. That’s why it totally suits me to get to that target ASAP, because it won’t be over then....that’s just the beginning really!

On previous rounds I have either gone back to ‘normal’ and regained, or reintroduced too many carbs and regained, so unfortunately for me, it’s a low carb life. I am hoping that by introducing some exercise that maintenance will be easier. I am hoping that will become my new normal?

OP posts:
londonista · 16/03/2018 17:27

Too true Bear. It is going to have to be a new way of life for me as well.
I don't normally eat this much meat either, so that's been a real adjustment as well.

Although having said that, I'm having a tofu red curry tonight as a change, which I'm looking forward to!

How's everyone's weekend's shaping up? I'm going to my MIL for a fish supper tomorrow night, but she only ever does her fried fish with salad so it should be BSD friendly, but slightly calorific all the same.

yumyumpoppycat · 16/03/2018 17:39

If there are a few of us maintaining on here Bear, all knowing how important it is to stay on track hopefully that will make a difference! Fingers crossed. A couple of fast days a week is my plan too - if I get to maintenance. I seem to be ok with good carbs but fall into free fall when I eat too much junky food or late at night.

Londonista that is fantastic that you have got in the rhythm of things and in a way makes sense to keep going if it is making you feel good and working.

Whyis defo stay on here - yay there might be a thread baby! It might help all of us if a few posters are doing more maintenance style.

whyistherumgone · 16/03/2018 17:47

Thank you! Fingers crossed, I've had two pregnancies but no children so far so I'm figuring that being a bit healthier can't hurt.
Third time lucky right?!

I'm really looking forward to dinner - chicken and bacon [chopped] with a little bit of home made pesto and lacto-free cream sauce, courgetti and some chopped peppers. Yum! I don't mind cutting back when I'm actually enjoying the food.

Bear carbs really don't agree with my either, I just love them so!

Oblomov18 · 16/03/2018 18:00

Hey everyone!

I went for lunch with my mum today. I only see her every couple of months, but speak to her twice a week, so this is a treat.
Had scallops and samphire.
God it was delicious. I'm going to buy some samphire from Waitrose!

My mum gave me this:miso.
She said she'd tried many and hated most of them. But this one is only 21 calories. From Sainsbury, in a pack of 5, for the Compared same price as Tesco, but you only get 3 sachets, and they are 44 calories, not 21.

I'll try it and let you know how bad it is!! Wink

Hi Oblomov! Samphire is yum - they sell it in bigger tescos too.

Fingers firmly crossed for you whyis.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/03/2018 18:47

I’ve never tried samphire....is it a bit seaweedy???

Tonight we’re having chicken wrapped in Parma ham, with a mushroom garlic and cream sauce and halloumi fries. I’m bloody starving!!!

And yes. Everything crossed for you whyis Flowers

I'm having a MASSIVE moment of doubt and stuff! Mostly about the supposed 'mediterranean' diet - most of the countries in that part of the world DO eat carbs, they just do. Italy's main thing is pasta FFS!

So now I'm getting annoyed and having a 'moment'!

I've gone over today, but still not eaten any carbs, so I'm close to plan but I'm eyeing up the biscuits and thinking about how bloody starving I am!

Oblomov18 · 16/03/2018 19:42

Right, caught up on thread.
Welcome back yumyum.
Welcome flighty, whyis, mummy, grin, rum.

Love the idea of a thread baby!!

Well done Bear on the size 10.
I am very sedentary and do no exercise whatsoever. I only walk to the car and back!
I too, like yumyum adore McCoy's and crisps generally possibly more than chocolate.

Oblomov18 · 16/03/2018 19:44

No bear, it's like a very thin, strand of broccoli, like a kind of purple sprouting broccoli.

veryveryquietly · 16/03/2018 20:21

Mmm, I love the chicken breasts wrapped in parma ham - I always make extra and slice the leftover to go into salads the next day.

Am feeling good because I managed to make a low carb version of my fave food: chicken enchiladas verde. Omitted the tortillas and instead layered the pan with courgette ribbons on bottom, then chicken/cheese/salsa filling, then more courgette ribbons on top, then some sour cream, more salsa, and some monterey jack. It turned out pretty good, and quite filling.

Slightly over on cals (854) and carbs (46) today but still not bad really.

bridgetreilly · 16/03/2018 20:24

Flightywoman, in the book he's very clear that what he calls the 'Mediterranean' diet isn't actually what people in the Med would eat. And, in fact, that you can do it in all kinds of cooking styles. But it is lots of veg, lots of olive oil, meats, cheeses and so on. It's easy to eat that way in a Mediterranean diet, so long as you don't add in the pasta and pizza!

whyistherumgone · 16/03/2018 20:30

Thanks everyone :)

Don't do it Flighty don't reach for the biscuits - I know what you mean about the 'med' diet tho...

I've never tried samphire before, I'm intrigued now!

I'm also on the crisps over chocolate gang, sigh. It seems so unfair that carbs don't agree with me!

Dinner was lovely, I added an egg and little bit of cream to the home made pesto and I'm stuffed! I've ended the day on 1280 calories due to the 10k run and the resulting 26,460 steps (according to fitbit) and may allow myself some low carb snacks later as my carbs have only come in at 38g today.

Think, after reading up on it a bit more today, I'm going to stick with low carb (under 50g) but not really restrict on the calories - so the suggested "maintenance" med diet from the book. I will let you know how I get on, but I've already been loosely low carbing over the last week (today is the first day I've been super strict on it) and lost 3pounds last week, so I'm hopeful!

yumyumpoppycat · 16/03/2018 22:42

Flighty I know how you feel. Med diet is probably good for people who are already slim in terms of being healthy, but for weight loss it needs to include either being low carb or low cal or fasting periods.

Dr Longo (one of the people that influenced MMs original fasting documentary) has recently released a longevity/ fasting mimicking diet which is also med diet but quite different to BSD. In this version Mediterranean is basically similar to vegan diet (easiest description) but with fish. Med diet in this case is fish, nuts, olive oil, veg, legumes, wholegrains, dark chocolate. So breakfast would be whole wheat bread with Jam, lunch would be soup or salad, and dinner would be pasta but only a small amount bulked out with veg and with olive oil. Weightloss in this diet is achieved through only having 2 meals a day (3 meals for people who don't want to lose weight) and by paying £200 plus for his 5 day fasting pack approx. once a month. Who can afford that!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/03/2018 08:32

Morning all.

Ended up having a bit of a mega-meal last night, but it was very tasty! Just calorie heavy.

Today: we have a 30th party tonight (nobody needs young friends, I’m positively dreading it) and it’s fancy dress (which I’m not doing, see above re:old and grouchy) and it’s forecast to snow and be zero degrees again! Gah! What a terrible day first world problems I know.

I’m just having my Saturday treat of a coffee with cream as I’ve been up a long time with Ds already. Spicy chicken tonight. Something light at lunchtime. I’d hoped to drive tonight so I could avoid drinking but the party is at a social club at the top of our road so I will have to actually exercise some restraint instead!

OP posts:
veryveryquietly · 17/03/2018 14:08

Leftover chicken courgette enchiladas verde thing for breakfast, and it was delish. Have just roasted a tray of almonds and hard-boiled a half dozen eggs, and have also stocked on little individually wrapped cheeses, so am now set with emergency snacks/lunch substitutes for desperate times for this week.

Feeling the need for a bit of a treat this afternoon. Luckily, I have a lot of calories (relatively) left for the day still, so a bit of nice chocolate may be in order.

Doing ok loss-wise, especially now that I have gotten back to being stricter-ish, aiming for 850 cals and 30 gr carbs per day, but ok if I've stayed under 925 cals and 45 gr carbs.

Have to admit I'm getting a bit bored though, as have been doing a lot of [chunk of fish or meat] + [vegetable of choice, roasted or steamed] this last week. Need to try some new recipes now I have a bit more time. Suggestions always welcome!

Good luck with the restraint, bear! And hope everyone else is having a good weekend so far!

yumyumpoppycat · 17/03/2018 14:21

Very your food plan for today sounds great!

Bear hope the party is ok, at least if you cant take it anymore you can give some excuses and be back home at a decent time! And if you don't exercise restraint hopefully that means you are enjoying the party Grin I am so over parties - it's sad getting old!

Having a BAD day today so need to be on it tomorrow.

whyistherumgone · 17/03/2018 15:11

oh wow 30g is low, I've been keeping to 50g - I hope I still keep seeing results, especially as I'm not being super strict on the calorie intake on exercise days (which is most days!).
I think Fitbit /MFP massively overestimates the calories so I'm trying to ignore all the extra it keeps giving me, as tempting as it is!

The chicken courgette enchiladas sound amazing very
