Blood sugar diet thread 7

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/06/2017 13:53

Here's thread seven for the Blood Sugar Diet followers.

It's 5 weeks and 5 days until school breaks up (may vary by region!) so let's get those bodies lean for Summer!

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

Can I join! I'm not diabetic but I do have a chronic pain condition and I've packed on the weight as a result of medication.

Today is my day one, so hoping to hold out until afternoon before eating.

tobee · 14/08/2017 14:22

Hmm. I'm at the "keep losing and regaining the same two pounds" stage. Strictness beckons me with its bony talon! ShockGrinGrinGrinGrin

tobee · 14/08/2017 14:25

Welcome newbies! Hammy I would definitely recommend the water option first. Give it a half hour and if still hungry, have a square of cheese or similar. Obviously, that's for future reference. That's my thought anyway.

tobee · 14/08/2017 14:26

Ps the book says some days you will be under, some you will be under 800.

tobee · 14/08/2017 14:27

D'oh. Some days you will be under, some days you will be over 800.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/08/2017 15:06

Gah, strict club! Was being very good today. Met friends at a local garden centre to use the corn maze and sandpit, ended up staying over lunchtime. I bought a scotch egg from the farm shop (seemed to be the most BSD friendly option as it was mostly egg/sausage with v small crust of breadcrumb, and ate 2 plums. No idea if that's on plan or not??? The plums were beautiful but very sweet, but at least wasn't a sandwich or crisps or ice cream. They have left me hankering for more sugar though....

Tonight's tea is baked cod with green veg which is always supremely healthy sounding but never really hits the spot. Perhaps I should juggle my menu around to put something more filling in tonight?

Welcome newbies! You're joining us at the right time it seems as we're all dusting off our halos and being very well behaved or trying at least

Wow, calories 400 so far which isn't horrendous, but carbs 43 already - plums definitely not a good idea!

Can I ask about mindfulness and bsd? That's a bit of a posh term but what I mean is do you eat your meals and appreciate them, take time over them? I particularly notice I don't when I'm eating on my own which is usually breakfast and lunch. So I prepare my food and then sit down happily. I get distracted and look at my plate and the food is gone! For me this is annoying because I've chosen something nice to eat, cook it myself (not just picked up a ready made sandwich), I'm looking forward to it. I think I should be aware of eating! Does this make sense? Surely its better to eat thoughtfully? Confused

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/08/2017 16:27

Tobee I try to- not always successfully. That's why I like to do my photos and make my food look really delicious. There's a definite correlation between me not doing so well, and me not concentrating and appreciating my food.

Tobee lol at bony talon of strictness Grin

I never eat all that mindfully, I don't like the taste of food that's been chewed properly Blush I think enjoying food and mindful choices is def a strategy that would be a keeper for maintenance though because when I am off the wagon I am the total opposite of mindful.

Bear I think you did well with 400 cals at lunch, and carbs aren't so bad.

My carbs were pretty high yest and cals about 850 but my fibre was at 17 and I had a decent 6 portions of veg and 2 fruit so I was pretty happy and full. Different story today I had omelette with veg this morning, so a good start but we were out as a family doing emirates lift and boats on river thames etc and went to pizza hut for lunch. I couldn't bring my self to eat superfood salad without chicken again (and begrudge the extra £2) so had the leggara chicken pizza, also had a latte. So now we are back, I haven't done MFP but I guess I am over on cals and carbs so should prob call it a fast now but my head hurts and I AM HUNGRY!

tobee · 14/08/2017 17:29

A few years ago, might have been my Paul McKenna attempt, I tried to eat without reading, listening to the radio, watching the tv etc. But I just found it sooooooo boring. And the food just became awful and a chore to eat. I suppose I need to do something in between.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/08/2017 17:47

Tobee it depends on your situation is I guess. I love mealtimes. Dh is never home to eat with us so it's just me and whichever dc are there. It's one of the few times when we all interact as teen dd usually avoids the boys at all costs. It's a fun time where we laugh, and baby Ds entertains us all with his funny sayings (today- I love bums (plums, he can't say pl properly) -- it's anything but mindful and tranquil, it's bloody chaos! I prefer that to eating alone though. I get my 'mindfulness' from getting my menu all planned out, deciding what foods to try and cooking rather than from the actual eating of it.

Today I was supposed to be having baked cod but I found some scallops in the fridge from Saturday that needed to be eaten. Had them with cream, chilli, lime and courgetti- absolutely delicious. Realised I've bought 2 tubs of fat free Greek yog instead of full fat so I did have a spoonful but it wasn't very nice at all. Not been the most organised start to strict club, it's been a bit hotchpotch but hopefully should end the day around 800 although way over on carbs.

OP posts:
yoohooitsme · 14/08/2017 19:25

Bear those scallops sound delicious.

I finished my 8 week stint 34lbs lighter and terrified I'll put it straight back on as I always have on other diets.

So far I stuck to the med style diet and had no calorie limit on Saturday but yesterday I slipped back towards 800-1000 where I feel safer weight wise.

It's still 28lbs more to get to overweight and then the same again to get to a healthy weight bmi 25 but at least I am loving the foods and the fridge contents are so appealing I have not craved chocolate at any point.

I'm going to relax the calories for this week and come up with a new plan depending what the scales say on Saturday - ideally I would take a break for four weeks then do the 8week thing again I think.

QueenofHibernia · 14/08/2017 19:34

First day done! 818 calories. I'm vegan(ish) so I'm trying to do this by lowering my carbs rather than going low carb iyswim. I'll up my fat tomorrow to try and lower it further.

Day 1 of diets are usually ok for me. Day 2 is harder because you're hungry from the day before! Grin

I've read this whole thread, really inspiring stuff. I like that everyone seems to have had lapses and got back on track, it makes it seem more doable and realistic to me. I'm a recovering all-or-nothing perfectionist!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/08/2017 20:57

Gosh it must be hard to do this plan as a vegan!

I'm struggling this evening, I reckon it's too much fruit earlier. Absolutely ravenous so had a piece of cheese hoping the fat would counteract the fructose, and a cup of decaf tea. Dh just heated his dinner up after getting home late and oh my days it smells yummy!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 14/08/2017 21:01

I weighed myself at the weekend and I was 2lbs down (so that was 2lbs of the 4lbs I put on over the holidays - I think you were right yumyum about the water weight and exercising).
We're getting organised for going back to school so there was lots of running about today which was good but it's knocked my eating window out completely as I'm currently making some cod for dinner . . .at 9pm. Will pop in later with final calories and carbs for #strictclub.

yumyumpoppycat · 14/08/2017 22:54

Well don't Yoohoo - trying to maintain for 4 weeks sounds like an excellent plan before next stint.

Bear my dp was torturing me by fantasising about eating Millies cookies this eve, which turned into us reminiscing about the good ol days where we ate shed loads of carbs without batting an eyelid!

Good luck queen - I guess for you it's more a case of cutting back on sugar?

Great news about the lbs Aplace!

day 2 Strict club 880 for me today but carbs a whopping 93!

QueenofHibernia · 14/08/2017 23:29

I think so! Cutting back on sugar, going low GI and omitting carbs where I can. Hummus, avocado and peanut butter will be staples I think!

yumyumpoppycat · 15/08/2017 00:31

All yummy stuff! I think some of the less processed soy stuff like tempeh is ok too in the book?

APlaceOnTheCouch · 15/08/2017 10:40

Mon strict club: 874 cals; 62.6g carbs but I was very low on fruit and veg.

Hammy12345 · 15/08/2017 11:36

This is day 4 for me and finally the gnawing hunger and nausea has gone! Feel much better and feel this is sustainable for 2-3 months. Hope everyone else who has just started is starting to find it easier

blueskyinmarch · 15/08/2017 12:15

Hello all. I got my copy of the BSD plus the recipe book yesterday. I managed a decent 900 cals over the day and didn't feel too hungry. I am aiming for 800-1000 each day as I think that is achievable for me. I was down 1kg overnight which was excellent.

tobee · 15/08/2017 13:45

Feeling all wibbly wobbly this week as ds gets his a level results on Thursday. 😱. Then we'll he'll be sorting out where he goes in September. I can think straight.

tobee · 15/08/2017 13:45

Can't think straight.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 15/08/2017 14:51

Sending lots of luck to mini tobee - exciting times! But I can see why you're distracted this week too.

I had avocado for breakfast then roast beef and goat's cheese salad for lunch.MN has changed my life with the tip on how to open and de-stone avocados.
