Here's thread seven for the Blood Sugar Diet followers.

It's 5 weeks and 5 days until school breaks up (may vary by region!) so let's get those bodies lean for Summer!

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

last week I meant gah.

pitpot · 10/08/2017 22:56

It feels good to be back. And yes, weirdly I still get complimented on weight loss too despite having gained a stone and a half this year. Oh well!
Today has been ok except for a couple of small wines this evening so I need to reign that in for this to work. But I didn't eat crisps or bread for the first time in a long time so that's a start. As expected though I was hungry and a bit grumpy...
I just remember from last time that amazing feeling when feeling hungry actually starts to feel good. Like light and alive or something.
I need to get back that. And also when it starts to happen and the weight starts to show and clothes feel all loose again. I loved that. Must get there again soon. Thanks for the welcomes. I'm feeling good and positive about this x

APlaceOnTheCouch · 10/08/2017 23:20

So much for #BSDstrictclub - I should have gone to bed straight after my last post instead of checking the fridge for soon-to-be-out-of-date-food and eating half a trifle Hmm
Oh well, tomorrow is another day.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/08/2017 09:48

Morning all,
I'm starting strict club on Monday totally, I promise, honest guv as Dh is still off work and quite frankly if he's drinking red wine on a weeknight then so am I. Sticking to the food principles though, and I've lost 3lb since Tuesday, so I'm happy with that.

Someone up thread mentioned that lovely clear head hunger thing that goes on when you BSD properly and I totally get that! It's almost as if I spent so long, years, in that overstuffed insulin foggy state that the feeling of hunger was so unusual to me. Reading 'wired to eat' (Paleo) is very interesting about this, because it would appear that it's a natural occurring state presumably as a response to hunger to get you out of the cave and chasing antelope around. It must be a good sign doing this that you're insulin is calming down and your metabolism is getting fired up?

Sunny here today, so I've got all the washing out and planning a day of housework and pottering about to get some steps in. Bacon and beans for breakfast - I'm enjoying eating a bit more fibre, it feels more carby and comforting!

I'll be strict again on 19th, we've got another week at my mum's and I really can't do it if I'm in holiday mode!

tobee · 11/08/2017 12:10

Beans. I love beans. 😍. And bacon. It's the best feeling a bit crappy combo. With strong tea. 🦄🌈

yumyumpoppycat · 11/08/2017 18:30

Is wired to eat good Bear - it keeps popping up on suggested for you on my amazon. Actually a book I read yonks ago the 4 hour body recommends adding legumes to a low carb diet and combining it with fasting,

Oh my goodness I am so not on strictclubing yet - I thought there would be some and rules and stuff before we started
The first rule of strictclub:

  1. You do not talk about strict club....
  2. You DO NOT talk about strict club
Oh.... that's not gonna work ;)
APlaceOnTheCouch · 11/08/2017 19:27

My strictclub yesterday involved trifle and ice cream - I may not be winning this week's strictclub trophy Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/08/2017 19:43

Yumyum yes, wired to eat is interesting and easy enough to read (unlike Fat Chance which was dullsville and way too scientific). It seems that a lot of the science behind Paleo links in with mosely's work, such as fasting, low carbing to achieve insulin balance, and gut health. I don't know if I will go on to do a Paleo plan but I might try to incorporate some elements.

I think strict club needs rules too, I love a bit of discipline. My main 3 that to me mean being strict are:
1 for the love of God, woman get out of the kitchen. No snacks

  1. Drink water X lots and then more
  2. Exercise/go for a walk/ do Jillian dvd or basically anything that involves hauling my carcass around for about 20 minutes. I am hideously lazy and the holidays compound this because I don't even have to do school runs (school is in my street- although to my defence, we do live on top of a hill)

I might also add in the small matter of sticking to 800 cals at least alternate days Every day
Avoiding the big 5- rice, pasta, grains, potatoes (easy) and sugar (really difficult) and wine. I need to go teetotal for at least a few weeks.

Dh has been off work now for 2 weeks and I/we have drunk every day. Not loads, but still had a drink. We watched trainspotting 2 last night so all day we've been saying in bad Scottish accents 'aye, we're off the skag from sunday'
It's dm's birthday tomorrow so we are going round for cake/lunch/wine but then really really its boot camp for me from Sunday.

KTD27 · 11/08/2017 19:57

Well we have finished! 8 weeks done!
Some cheating along the way, a wedding attended much red wine drunk but generally stuck to the 800cals 90% of the time.
Drumroll please...::
I am officially 18.5lbs lighter and a dress size smaller having lost a whopping 7 inches from my tummy, 2 from my ass and 1 from my arms.
DH is 24 (!!) lbs lighter and the lowest weight I have ever known him at in 6 years.
Dad is 25 lbs lighter and the lightest he has been since the 70s!
Mum lost 11 and fell off the wagon slightly but is still rightly thrilled as she had lots less to lose.
Ace ace ace. Now off on holiday for a week and will try our best not to undo our good deeds.
I'm planning on another stint after the recommended 4 weeks break but will be 5:2ing during that so as not to get out of the habit!

Oblomov17 · 11/08/2017 20:19

Well done indeed KT!!

Yes, to strict-club-1 starting on Monday. Agreed rules so far suggested are good. We need rules!!

I've just arrived home and eaten this nice Sainsbury's halloumi kebabs.

yumyumpoppycat · 11/08/2017 20:51

WoW KD well done to you and your family! That is amazing almost 80lbs!

Oblomov delish looking kebabs

Maybe 1 more rule - 5 portions of veg when pos!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 12/08/2017 01:02

KTD what brilliant losses! Well done!
Ooh, I like the rules and the one about portions of veg too. I'm tempted to create a table or spreadsheet to keep track but I do love a table Wink When DS started on solids, I carried about a mini-notepad divided into sections for each food type to make sure he was having an optimally-balanced diet

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/08/2017 21:54

Ok, I've read enough of 'wired to eat' to deduce that Paleo isn't quite for me, because the things I know I'll stick to are pretty much BSD and the other things (like no eggs or dairy) I know will just make it even harder to stick to. I can't be trusted with fruit, or self regulating my calorie intake by judging satiety so I don't think a 30 day reset is for me. However, I am going to steal the matrix and some recipes from the book as they fit with our plan. This matrix seems very useful when meal planning. Essentially, each meal uses one item from each column- 1 protein, 1 fat, 1 (or more ) veg and 1 or more spice. Tomorrow I'm going to fully plan out all meals for the week and write a shopping list, and I am going to try to cut down the amount of dairy I eat, namely because I tend to eat it as either snacks or desserts (ie yoghurt) and this can lead me astray. I think cutting back to the basics of 3 solid meals a day (mother was horrified today when I said I don't usually eat breakfast) will help and by not having so much dairy this will remove options for those times I tend to overeat. Some of the recipes in the WTE look really nice, some good veggie sides as well.

Great loss ktd and it's fab that your whole family have supported each other. Well done you

OOh thanks Bear - but no eggs for a month Shock as well as no legumes, grains, dairy and sugar??? Shock

I ate soooooo badly yesterday - I think lets be really bad before being really good is setting in. So I am starting strict club today. I wasn't hungry because I had toast at midnight but decided to still have an omelette - frozen pepper and onion, paprika, garlic powder and oil so that is all pretty matrix friendly! Unfortunately I did eat one of the dc's crusts with jam on it though Blush

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/08/2017 09:41

I know yumyum although I do think you can actually have eggs (unless you're eliminating foods that cause inflammation such as IBS/bowel issues)? It seems very restrictive but then on reading the recipes in the book, they are basically BSD friendly. I don't think I could manage without dairy but on the other hand, I do eat a lot of it, so perhaps i should! I think I am going to take on board some of the info and use it to supercharge my BSD rather than follow Paleo IYSWIM? So increase fibre, less processed foods, Maybe have some dairy free days. Grains don't fuss me to be honest, but I do occasionally eat beans/legumes and was planning to eat more to increase fibre intake. That matrix is handy though when having a 'nothing to eat' moment, because even just reading through it I was thinking 'ooooh I could have that with this' etc so it gets me thinking. The key for me is no snacks, and to do that I need great meals. I'm definitely not buying Greek yog this week, or any frozen fruit or other 'allowed' things that make me lose track. I bought two ready meals last week, slimming world copies from asda, that appeared to be okay (sausage and bean cassoulet) and an hour after eating I was starving and rooting through the cupboards- when I checked more closely they had things like sweeteners, thickeners and other mystery chemicals which makes me realise that home cooked meat+veg+ fat + spice is basically how I cook anyway and is probably the best way!

Bear I think my goals are pretty much the same as yours. I don't think cutting legumes is something I need to do because I have done that before and I don't eat much of them in general so I am going to have them more. I could prob do with cutting back on milky tea and coffee but not ready for that yet!

Had a big lunch - shop chicken and veg soup that needed eating today, added some turmeric (taking the spice thing very seriously!) also small bowl of salad leaves, cooked chicken, garlic chilli olives, jarred grilled peppers, tiny blob of hummus so now only about 200 cals left.

Oblomov17 · 13/08/2017 21:09

Right, so as agreed I finally weighed myself. 10
Stone 7. SadI've put on 4lbs. I was 10 stone 3. So now, I'm quite far off being in the 9's. Sad

I'm going to try and join 'strict club' as of tomorrow.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/08/2017 21:16

Welcome back oblo,
After not going too mad on holiday I went kerrrr-azy once getting home and when I weighed in this morning I too had gained 3lb- and that's took me back up into the 12's again so i felt very glum this morning, especially as I'd lost my small holiday gain by Friday. We know what to do to get it gone though!

I've had a good day, eaten well, not calorie counted. Tomorrow is strict club day 1 for me! Menu planned, shopping list written, ready to rock and roll.

Hello, I am on day 3 of bsd, it has been going ok, and has definitely stopped my sweet/carb cravings in the evening. I'm on 802 calories for today, but I'm suddenly absolutely starving! Should I just have a drink and go to bed, or would you have something small to eat, and then go over my calories?

Summerloving17 · 14/08/2017 07:55

Hi ladies, I am going to join you if you don't mind. I need all the help possible to keep me away from the fridge/cupboard/sons snacks! Ive gained just over a stone in the last year from 3 failed rounds of iui and now I think people think I'm pregnant when I'm sadly not! It needs to go!
Any advice gratefully received- I'm an awful snacker when I'm at home and in the evenings- strict when out the house though! I'm not sure how to cope without some sort of dessert!!

pitpot · 14/08/2017 08:04

I have been okish on food but have been on the wine all weekend. I'm a lb up so 11.1 today. Total bummer.
I'm liking all the rules - a short list is a good reminder of the essence of the diet.
So for me it's 800 calls, no refined or white carbs, minim beans, fresh cooked food - veg plus small protein portion, lots and lots of water, long fasting window (for me that's ditching breakfast entirely), no wine!
I go away again on Wednesday which will be boozey but I'll try and stay reasonably in control. I'll manage the food I hope.
So a few strict days now, a minor hiatus, then boozeless strictness.
Sorry, that's all really boring and about me but I just wanted to write it down publicly to keep me accountable.
Thanking you all
