Blood sugar diet thread 7

Here's thread seven for the Blood Sugar Diet followers.

It's 5 weeks and 5 days until school breaks up (may vary by region!) so let's get those bodies lean for Summer!

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

Fizz that's a great NSV - well done!
bear 3lbs isn't much at all. That's an excellent result Flowers
We've been away for a long weekend and although I've eaten lots, I've also been more active and I think BSD has helped with that. I'm not as self-conscious going swimming or trying new activities. I'm determined that once DS goes back to school, I'm going to sign up for some keep fit or dance classes. I think for BSD to be a lifelong WOE for me, I need to work out how to follow it and exercise.

Flibbertyjibbit · 08/08/2017 00:43

After making it to week 7 day 7 & 10kg lost, I fell off plan for a few weeks. Back on it tomorrow, hoping when I weigh in the morning I've not regained all of the 10kgs! Hope its OK to come back to this thread after being AWOL.

JigglyTuff · 08/08/2017 08:23

Hello all. Fell off the wagon and have put on 1.5lbs but back on this week.

Fizz - I'm wearing an LKBennett skirt I bought about 2 year ago to slim into and have never worn. Brilliant feeling isn't it? Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/08/2017 20:20

Hi everyone, I've had a few good days. Haven't calorie counted yet, but I'm only having BSD foods and trying to eat more fibre; tonight I had sausage and bean cassoulet (it was actually a ready meal) with a steam bag of veg. Yesterday we had a chicken korma (again with a pre prepped sauce, although I spent ages reading the packs to find one with the very least amount of sugar!)

Tomorrow I'm calorie counting, I just wanted to ease myself back in gradually.

I'm reading a book about Paleo which is very interesting. I'm only in the opening chapters but it seems to have similar principals to BSD, and a lot of talk about insulin resistance. The Only difference would be no dairy and a more 'unprocessed' style of eating? Has anyone done a Paleo diet or know anything about it?

OP posts:
Flibbertyjibbit · 08/08/2017 22:15

I've got quite a few paleo cookbooks, I followed paleo principals for approx 6 months (about 5 years ago) before switching to primal so I could add in a bit of dairy. I lost 4 stone - it definitely works but I found it more restrictive not having dairy. put it all back on when my steroids increased gah!

Nom nom paleo and slim palate paleo are my favorite paleo cookbooks. The nom nom website is also really good. I also like marks daily apple website which is primal based.

Properly back on plan today. 634 calories today. Off to see my dietitian tomorrow so hoping he is happy with my progress.

Jealous of you in tenerief Oblomov {imagines sunshine and &Ts}
Great idea about some classes Aplace they can be really fun.

Well done flibberty fingers crossed for good apt with dietician.

Bear Paleo could defo give you a boost if you haven't tried it before. There is something motivating about it. I also have done Paleo a couple of times since about 4 years ago, including quite strictly for a while - even eating liver Shock . I def lost weight doing it without any kind of calorie counting but I think it promotes a lot of ' this is the healthiest way to eat' emotions around eating which aren't necessarily healthy, I also found I got rashes for some reason! I inevitably gained back all the weight I lost when I fell off the wagon, but to be fair I think the rash thing discouraged me. BSD followed properly worked better for me, but having said that I feel like I could use a paleo reboot at the moment! If I was to do it again I would try maybe just a week or two strictly (rather than 30 day thing) then slowly reintroducing in this order: legumes, yoghurt, non gluten grains, 'paleo treats', wine, wholemeal grains, other dairy...then figure out how to include cake without it all turning to crap!

Oblomov17 · 09/08/2017 10:00

Nice salads here.
Will I be able to re-create such niceness when back at home?

That's interesting yumyum -funnily enough while searching on here I found lots of posts from you about Paleo so I guessed you might be knowledgeable! The book I'm reading does seem to have a 30 days strict menu/plan and then what they described as a 7 days insulin resistance test (which is why I bought the book!) so I'm guessing that's reintroducing the carbs one by one and doing glucose readings to see which affect bs more. I suppose the question is if I could actually stick to it. I am suffering with headaches which I think is my eyesight, although I have had my eyes tested and my glasses don't seem to prevent the headache, so I have been considering that it might be dietary. I do eat a lot of processed foods even while doing BSD, in the form of ham/cheese/chorizo/bacon etc so maybe just a more unprocessed approach might be helpful. Not sure yet, I'll continue my book, but I do feel like an overhaul is on the cards and this might be it....!

Happy summer everyone waves from very wet weather, hope it's alright to check back in. Sounds like you all have managed fab holidays without any or many gains at all!! I have yet to go away properly, so far been doing lots of diy :( and days out.
Went with the carbs and dessert at the wedding we went to and promptly reminded myself what the pancreatic burn , which had disappeared over the 8 weeks, felt like again. If I needed an answer pointed out, there it was!! Just in case I was mistaken, a picnic last Monday reminded me so really all the other days, I haven't logged food or calories but I have avoided carbs. A slice of cheesecake on Sunday and some chips at Nandos yesterday. For anyone about at the start of my 8 weeks I was worried about falling off the wagon, binging etc. Never say never and what is tricky in the holidays is the lack of routine, but tentatively this is becoming a new woe. Long may it last.
I haven't lost any more weight. So far have fluctuated between 14.4 and 14.6 (starting weight 16.5.5) and am happy with that. Will see what happens on holiday (famous last words...) and try rotation 2 in September.
Really want to try that shoukshouk?? and other recipes refererred to upthread!!!

Perdyboo · 09/08/2017 11:32

Bear, ham+cheese is my goto when I need a snack!! Belgians call ham+cheese baguette bikini, so I think it can't be wrong to eat it without the bread and aim for the bikini??!

yumyumpoppycat · 09/08/2017 19:27

Well done on maintaining Perdy!

Oblomov that is a really delish looking salad!

New average I got really evangelical for a while because I couldn't believe how easy Paleo was compared to 5:2, novelty wore off though. Sounds really interesting to test your blood sugar and see what foods affect it , if you find out you can't eat toast but you can eat croissants say then it wont be so bad!

Flibbertyjibbit · 09/08/2017 20:43

Well done on maintaining perdy.

I've had a great afternoon, dietitian is really happy with me, 10lbs off! He got out what 10lbs looks like as I said I had hoped for a bigger loss. But he reminded me that I'm having to work really hard due to the steroids.

Managed to say no to cake when I met up with a friend for coffee afterwards. I tried not to stare at her cake too much

Oblomov17 · 10/08/2017 10:05

Well done Flibberty. I can't imagine what 10 lbs actually looks like. Gross!!

I am going to have the courage to weigh myself as soon as I get back. I am then going to try and fast more and drink a lot more water.

Shall We set up a 'post holiday- strict' bit on this thread: for those of us who need to get back on the programme?

Flibbertyjibbit · 10/08/2017 11:28

It was surprising to see it, each chunk weighs 5lb ...

I find the 16:8 really helps with weight loss. I've not been drinking enough water so hope to increase that.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 10/08/2017 12:08

Well, I am completely deluded about how exercise balances with eating more. I put on 4lbs! It is the part of my cycle when I'm usually at my heaviest but that only accounts for 1lb at most.
I'm going back to my food diaries from when I first started BSD and am going to follow them for a while.
I obviously need to be super strict to break my holiday mindset and to overcome my belief that if I exercise I can eat lots more. So definitely count me in for your post-holiday strict club Oblomov

Flightywoman · 10/08/2017 12:24

Still on hols, but have managed to avoid rice, pasta and most potatoes! There was a minor chip incident but I gave most to the husband.

There has been cake and ice-cream, but not lots and not everyday. Booze on the other hand...Wink

Happy discovery is that poppadoms are made from lentil flour!

Scales are showing staying stable which will do me!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/08/2017 13:13

Definitely count me in for the post holiday boot camp! I feel so unhealthy. Just went out for coffee with DM as its her birthday and did manage to resist cake, but I wanted it and was grouchy without it.

Flibberty take care with shop bought popadoms, most are lentil flour but some have rice flour as well- especially mini ones which I foolishly thought might substitute crisps, until i read the packet.

Hello again, can I pick your diety brains?

This is Day 4 for me - yourewelcome suggested sticking to the meal plan in the recipe book so I've been doing that (thanks yourewelcome Smile) and I've lost 1.3k which I'm really happy with.

I haven't found it too hard, which is amazing given that I have a very sweet tooth, but I'm really struggling to get off to sleep. I usually drop off quickly but this week I've been awake for 1 - 2 hours, despite being tired when I go to bed. Did anyone else find this, and does it get better? I also feel just a bit dizzy from time to time in the day - is that normal too?

TIA

APlaceOnTheCouch · 10/08/2017 16:29

LittlePearl lack of salt and low water intake can cause dizziness. When I started, I didn't take enough salt and was dizzy.
Low carb can also affect sleep. There's different tips to combat it. Some people suggest just waiting it out because after some time, your body will adjust. Others suggest saving some of your carb allowance till closer to bedtime so it helps you sleep.

yumyumpoppycat · 10/08/2017 17:44

I'm in for strict club. Envy this is sick face rather than jealous as obviously I am not jealous of being strict ;)

Aplace you can gain water weight when first exercising this is normal and doesn't mean you have gained actual weight but is super offputting it's also common to drop a couple of lbs when you first stop exercising Confused the health benefits of exercising make it worth the extra lbs well done Star

Well done flighty maintaining is excellent flibberty.

pitpot · 10/08/2017 20:10

I'm in for strictness and I'm going to post more and stop spying on you all to see if it helps.
I did BSD a year ago and got to 9st5, the lowest I'd been in decades. I'm now 11st today and pretty upset about it. Even just this fortnight away I've gained 5lbs. I've been pootling around trying to get back into it for months but now that I'm at the nice round number of 11 it has shocked me to take action. So I'm in!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 10/08/2017 21:37

yum thanks for the star Grin
Well, I had roast beef and goat's cheese salad for lunch. Then Korean beef for dinner and some almonds and dark chocolate as a snack. I'm on 778 cals and 56g carbs. But I have been sitting down all day trying to catch up on the work I've missed so my step count is non-existent.
I'm grumpy, tired and hungry . . . although actually if I stop and think about it, my stomach isn't hungry. It's just I'm craving something 'nice'.
Here's to #BSDstrictclub Gin and welcome pitpot

tobee · 10/08/2017 21:49

Hi. Came back from holiday on Saturday. Managed to stick on plan for some meals, ate biscuits, ice cream, chips, cake etc. but in reasonable moderation. Drank wine or gin every night. Didn't feel I'd been missing out all this time, can't bear to live without my unrefined carbs Grin.

So, after a week of that I weighed myself when I got in (not normal time, had brekkie and lunch etc) had gained 2lbs, so not too bad. Back on it this week. Need your help and support as usual.

yumyumpoppycat · 10/08/2017 22:23

tobee 2lbs that's pretty damn good for a post holiday weighin!

Grin @ #BSDstrictclub with gin thrown in!

Sorry I got my flighty's and my fliberty's mixed up Blush

yumyumpoppycat · 10/08/2017 22:31

Pitpot you can do it again! and really great you have decided to start posting. I got to my lowest a long time too then regained a stone so very similar, I still had someone who sees me all the time compliment me on losing weight last though Confused
