Blood sugar diet thread 7

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/06/2017 13:53

Here's thread seven for the Blood Sugar Diet followers.

It's 5 weeks and 5 days until school breaks up (may vary by region!) so let's get those bodies lean for Summer!

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

Good luck Mrs Smith. I'm on round 1 week 3 day 3 and have lost 12lbs. I found the first few days tricky but have settled right into it. I can highly recommend the recipe book (I'm just following the meal plans in the back).

There are some great recipes in there and I love the variation.

yourewelcome · 02/08/2017 19:01

Just had the gammon with braised red cabbage. Oh my god. Absolutely delicious. I'm having it again tomorrow!

mrssmith79 · 02/08/2017 20:38

Mmmm gammon - I like mine with an egg. I've made up a big pan of soup to tide me over for work lunches this week. Also got some Gram flour in Tesco tonight so I can make up a few low carb flatbreads to go with some tuna and spring onion. Will invest in the recipe book though because I'm struggling with creative meals that are filling.

yumyumpoppycat · 02/08/2017 23:39

Good call Aplace Grin

Well done on 12lbs yourewlcome!

Welcome mrs smith

Not a low day for me, just back from winey evening with friends but will try for 800 tomorrow.

yourewelcome · 03/08/2017 07:08

Can't recommend the book enough. There's loads of meals that sound a bit rubbish that end up delicious like prawn and pea salad. I've got leftover gammon and braised cabbage again tonight then tomorrow cottage pie with cauliflower cheese topping.

Morning all, just checking in.

I dread to think the damage that's been done this week! Could have a tough few weeks trying to get this gain off. I've finished reading Fat Chance which, while many bits aren't relevant to me as its about true obesity, it is very interesting and it's really enlightening about the American food agency and how they have clearly just corrupted everything we eat. I have a few tips for going forward though, in particular about fibre which I really don't eat enough of , and have learned a lot about insulin and fat storage. Over the next few evenings I'm going to plan my menus for the week after I come back and do a tesco order so it will all arrive once we get home.

DH has started 5:2 and I may join him on that at the end of my 8 week stint.
Hoping we can be healthier parents and lead by example for DC.
He survived his first fast day and doing second today.

Does anyone else find friendsrelations looking at you like you've lost the plot when you say how you havelost weight? MIL clearly thinks there is no hope for me 😂 A friend asked the other day and I started to explain and just trailed off as I could see she thought I had been hypnotised by aliens or some such!

Flightywoman · 03/08/2017 11:04

Holidaaaaaaaay!

Yesterday was quite quite wrong in the overall food thing, mainly sheer quantity, but there was also a bag of wine gums. Shortly afterwards there wasn't [looks shifty]. HOWEVER, I didn't actually eat any bread/potatoes/other carbs so that's a tiny win!

Today has started well, AND, my mum's house has a lot of stairs so I'm hoping I can keep it relatively manageable and not go too mad while still having a fun time...

Happy days!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 03/08/2017 11:05

yoo I just say the diet is low-calorie and low-carb. If they ask more than that, I tell them about its medical benefits or say I will send them a link to the BSD website.
bear how much fibre should we eat?

yumyumpoppycat · 03/08/2017 14:28

I find it makes a difference when I actively try to include more fiber, I find it is pretty hard to get decent numbers in if sticking to 800 cals though.

ellsbellls · 03/08/2017 21:55

Hmmm, I caved, and it sort of came from nowhere...

Had veg and tofu omelette at lunch which totally filled me up. Didn't even think about food until 5 when I had a couple of desert spoons of total yogurt to keep me going.

Then I appear to have gone crazy, just felt so, so hungry all of a sudden so snaffled one of the kids' chippolata sausages, had a huge portion of chicken curry for dinner (on plan but way over calorie count) and followed it up with a chocolate muffin... Not great, and I'm not sure where it came from! I now feel uncomfortably full and the top of my stomach feels a bit sore and gurgly...

Fingers crossed I can put it behind me and get back on track tomorrow.

LittlePearl · 04/08/2017 17:29

Hello all, may I join in?

I lost 20k a couple of years ago doing 5:2 but have gained 10k over the last 8-10 months. Recently diagnosed with Hypothyroidism and on meds so I'm hoping I might stand a better chance of shifting it now. I've just ordered MM's diet and recipe books, they should be here tomorrow so I'll probably start this weekend.

I've not done low carb before......any tips? I'm a seasoned faster though, so I know I can do it if I really get in the zone. Pledging to my dh that I would give £50 to the Conservative Party every time I break a fast day really helps me resist temptation Grin They haven't had a penny yet......

yourewelcome · 04/08/2017 19:20

Welcome pearl. If you've ordered the recipe book I can't recommend enough following the weekly plans in the back. It's so easy and I've loved the variation.

Had skinny cottage pie tonight. Slightly odd as it's so warm here but delicious.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/08/2017 07:36

Place I'm not sure exactly, but I know that some days I eat very, very little (usually my good days IYSWIM, as I eat meat and salad and fat)- but I think there is more to fibre than simply 'roughage' and it helps with insulin balance.

I have totally fallen off the wagon while away and will be paying the price when I get home. Still away until Monday- sun has finally come out after a week of rain. Obviously, the baby is now really poorly with an ear infection and probably won't be able to go to the beach/pool today- it's been one thing after another all week and tbh I can't wait to get home! I feel like I need a holiday to get over my holiday- although Dh and I keep saying that by next summer we won't have a baby anymore, he'll be nearly 3 and hopefully we might actually be able to relax and come back refreshed rather than feeling like I have gained 7lb, drunk my body weight in wine, and not slept for 10 days.....

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/08/2017 07:50

Place re:fibre - 25g fibre a day (or 14g per 1000 calories eaten) is recommended on one site. Which gets on to the subject of 'net carbs' doesn't it, because a lot of carb counters don't count grams of fibre as they aren't digested. I always have, which is probably why I don't eat nearly enough. I might research some bsd friendly high fibre veg and add them in for a few weeks.

OP posts:
yumyumpoppycat · 05/08/2017 10:28

Will be good to hear what options you come up with Newaverage. Lentils are a good one I think. I think discounting the fibre grams from carb counts is a good incentive to add some in.

Welcome Little Pearl, I agree the recipe book is good for ideas. a good day for me would be a 2 egg omelette with frozen veg and leaves for breakfast, chicken salad for lunch, roast veg and small portion of meat at dinner.

ellsbellls · 05/08/2017 12:57

Sorry to hear your holiday has been tough bear. I find holidays with young kids a challenge too. We went to France a few years ago for 3 weeks with a 1 and 4 yr old and I cried when we arrived home as I was so relieved to be back and it had all been such a let down! We've limited it to a week this time - and they are 6 and 3 now - and I still feel a bit nervous!!

Welcome pearl!

My wobble continued yesterday. Well over on calories and a handful of oven chips too. Almost had a biscuit as well but managed to rein it in.

Been trying to think about why I've started struggling and reasoned that Sleep is definitely a factor this week (3yr old up continuously at night and both kids up at 6 or earlier every day of the holidays so far... WTF!!). Also getting bored of water so sneaking in the odd squash and Diet Coke. Also delaying eating until too late in the day and then not being able to control the volume of food as I've let myself get too hungry. So those are the things I am going to try to tackle. And I'm also going to give myself permission to have 1000 cals at this point (6 and a half weeks in). I figure better do that than give up entirely!

Apols for the self-absorbed post. Hope everyone is doing ok.

LittlePearl · 05/08/2017 14:23

Eek, the books have just arrived and I've been poring over the recipes.... the food looks tasty but I'm feeling a bit daunted by all the counting needed to keep track Confused That was what I loved about 5:2 - just counting on two days and I knew what 500cals looked like.

Does it get easier to judge as you go on? I don't want to flounder when I've only just started. Somebody please tell me it's worth the effort!

LittlePearl · 05/08/2017 14:25

PS Thanks for your welcomes! Smile

yourewelcome · 05/08/2017 16:33

That's who I just follow the meal plan. I can't be bothered with counting.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 05/08/2017 22:53

bear thanks for the answer about fibre. I have no idea how much I eat. I'm going to check back and see if my app includes it in the breakdown. I'm sorry your holiday has been rubbish. I remember feeling the same when DS was small. Flowers
We're away for the weekend and I have eaten absolutely everything. There are lots of activities here but honestly I would need to be active from morning till night to combat the vast amounts of food I've been eating. I'm feeling a bit disgusted with myself.

Nomoocluck · 06/08/2017 14:56

Haven't checked in for 3 weeks, during which time I've completely fallen off the wagon thanks to an extended holiday with little control over restaurant choices.
I was at week six before I left but I think I'm going to start again from scratch and do another 8 weeks. Felt amazing on the BSD, and despite not losing that much on the scales I was visibly slimmer - judging by comments from friends and family anyway.

FizzPopping · 06/08/2017 23:17

Hi all

Just checking in, I'm starting week 7 and after having a weekend away at a family wedding where I overindulged (and knew I would) I've had a week sticking fully to plan and now 24 lbs down since I started. Being able to get back on plan on our first day home was a big improvement, previously I've struggled with that and any sort of treat/off diet eating leads to a longer period of poor food choices so I do feel more in control with this WOE. Aim is to get to 2st by the end of my 8 weeks so that will hopefully keep me focused. I'm feeling the difference in my clothes, a dress I bought last year in the sale 'to slim into' now fits perfectly which was a lovely NSV when I tried it today. Having a clear out of my clothes to see what I've got that's worth ebaying to fund some new purchases when I get a bit further with my weight loss, still a long way to go.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/08/2017 07:46

We're home!
Weighed myself this morning and I've gained 3lb which considering the rubbish I've eaten this week is a small miracle. I need to do a shop and write a menu ASAP as I just want to get back on it, I feel so sluggish and unhealthy. My plan is to have a few strict days, and to start to refine the plan a bit, such as eating more fibre, not so much dairy/lactose, and also doing some exercise- I have realised after being away and being very active (nothing exciting, but just things like walking round the site, walking into the town etc) that while I am always busy at home, that is not the same as being active. So time for an overhaul I think. Dh is also feeling a bit overstuffed so hopefully he will join me as its always easier when we both are being good.

Have read most posts.

Posting mid holiday from Tenerife. The think the salads have helped. The gin and tonics haven't. I feel fat and bloated.
God knows what the scales will say when I get home.
