Blood sugar diet thread 7

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/06/2017 13:53

Here's thread seven for the Blood Sugar Diet followers.

It's 5 weeks and 5 days until school breaks up (may vary by region!) so let's get those bodies lean for Summer!

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

What troubles you about it Tobee?

I really like it! But I like apps and tracking and graphs!

yourewelcome · 29/07/2017 06:56

Me too. I just like the feeling of logging everything everyday. I'm really good at loosing weight but I always loose track and think it's just one day and all the weight goes on. I'm hoping this will make me more vigilant if I loose all this weight.

Flightywoman · 29/07/2017 09:58

Well, a few days of solid tracking and will-power and I feel MUCH better - more in control and not like I'm just running away with myself. Having identified that carbs and acid reflux is totally a Science Thing, and that I do get affected by them, I feel quite renewed and plan to keep them out of my diet for the forseeable, and I've always done better with willpower when it's not about my looks or 'vanity' but for some other reason. So hopefully I can keep going with that.

AND I have lost again after a week of gaining and then staying the same. So currently I am 3lbs down with 2 days till my Monday WI.

What I love about Happy Scale is that it is telling me I am 30% of the way to my target - and that's so encouraging.

Fingers crossed!

yumyumpoppycat · 29/07/2017 12:26

Well done Flighty that's a really good attitude! I am a bit under the weather but have had a similar lightbulb and ate pretty well yest and actually prob c800 cals. My hair is looking thin and scraggy at the mo so I have decided to prioritise healthy eating with the aim of losing the last podge at the back of my mind but less of a priority.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 29/07/2017 13:44

Great news Flight. Well done!
yum I've noticed my hair is looking thinner and was thinking it was some kind of peri-menopausal symptom. Do you think it's BSD related?

yumyumpoppycat · 29/07/2017 14:25

Not exactly Aplace - I haven't been eating healthily enough and have gained a fair bit of weight recently so wouldn't be right to say its BSD, but my swinging between low cal and junky eating can't be good. I have also gone grey fairly early (38) so been box dying my hair for a few years. My 6 yo keeps giving me nits too and when I use the comb on my hair loads comes out whereas none comes out for my dds. {sobs}

Problem is I still want to lose more weight so some kind of alternate day BSD option and generally eating healthy might be my best option but not sure I will lose weight. Let's see if I give it a really proper consistent go what happens - fingers crossed!!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 29/07/2017 15:22

I feel a bit stupid that I didn't even think about it being related to diet. You've made me realise that I used to take a multi-vit but have fallen out of that habit. I might start taking it again and see if that has any impact on my hair. If I use rollers, mousse and serum then I can make my hair look thick and healthy but otherwise, it looks like a scarecrow.
Who knew it would be so difficult to balance eating healthily; losing weight; keeping your hair Grin

yumyumpoppycat · 29/07/2017 15:37

Grin I know it really is! Confused

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/07/2017 19:20

Just checking in! Eaten well mostly today but did have an ice cream. I have walked actually miles though, I ache. Our caravan is miles from anything on the site so I feel like I've done a fair distance just going back and forth, plus we walked into the town and back today.

Forecast tomorrow is grim, so planning some sort of indoor activity, no doubt fuelled by piles of stodgy carbs from attraction cafes.

Re the hair- mine falls out in handfuls, it's like a scene from a horror movie. I never thought it was BSD related either, but maybe it could be. I find if I eat a lot of carbs it's much more dry and frizzy than if I eat more fat, which does make sense.

I am just here to be the biscuit fairy and tell you that McVities Milk Chocolate Digestive Thins are 31 cals and 4 carbs per biscuit.

There are other flavours but I can confirm these are very nice and taste more than 31 cals.

Also I have booked our Oct half term holiday. I am planning bikinis! ShockShockShockShock

APlaceOnTheCouch · 29/07/2017 22:05

Exciting news Jiggly - both the biscuits and the holiday booking!

ellsbellls · 30/07/2017 09:38

Tough day yesterday despite a good weigh in. Largely due to disappointing food I think. I'd planned some lovely meals - courgetti with prawns and tomato sauce and a beef saag - but both turned out to be bland and tasteless. DH had a takeaway and it took all my resolve not to bury my face in it!!

Interesting that lots of us are finding it hard at the moment. May be it's the summer, lack of routine, and too many opportunities for socialising plus kids driving us to breaking point! I definitely find it easier to stick to on the days I work.

Back to basics for me today. Bircher for breakfast, bresaola with rocket and parmesan for lunch and an omelette with veg for dinner. DH has taken kids out (miracle) so I am in the house on my own- bliss...

Good luck to all today.

JigglyTuff · 30/07/2017 09:54

Sorry about the disappointing food ells - nothing worse when every calorie counts :(

Yes absolutely agree re lack of routine and hanging around the house because it's pissing down. I'm back at work tomorrow for 2 weeks and am looking forward to being away from the fridge!

PhyllisWig · 30/07/2017 10:33

May I recommend an exploding molar and emergency dental treatment for unplanned fasting! Honestly last 8 weeks have been one health niggle after another.

I did make a readymeal/takeaway find on Friday. M&s king prawn bhuna. 300 cals and about 8g of carbs for the entire massive serving. Hit that Friday night takeaway feeling.

Flightywoman · 30/07/2017 18:53

Oh Phyllis, I hope you're ok? Sad

The reason I do better at work is that I take my lunch and even though I have my purse I almost never buy from the canteen - we moved to a new building last year and I've never got into the habit of using it. I had a salad once, it was ok, but no more than that.

So, once my lunch and snacks have run out well, that's it! There's nothing else for me to eat!

Whereas at home I can trawl the kitchen all day and pick pick pick!

I go on holiday in 3 days time. I am staying on track till then and then I'll do my very best, but I don't think I'll keep to 800 very often!

ellsbellls · 31/07/2017 21:59

Hope you're feeling better Phyllis?! Sounds nasty!

Lovely food today- mushrooms, eggs and watercress as a late breakfast, tiny amount of yoghurt and raspberries mid pm and marinated pork and vegetables for dinner. Probably ended up slightly over 800 though and I fear this is happening a little too regularly...

On the plus side, I baked chocolate cupcakes with the kids and managed to resist even licking my fingers!! Just....

PhyllisWig · 01/08/2017 07:53

Tooth is a tiny bit better but has to be sorted properly on Friday. I look a bit like desparate dan.....

So today is my official last day of the 8 weeks. Weighed in this morning at 10 stone and half a frigging lb. I so wanted to see a 9! I am carrying on til Friday so hopefully I will, even if just for one fleeting dayGrin.

That means in 8 weeks I've lost 1 stone and 8.5 lbs which I'm v happy with. I met my goal of getting into a healthy weight category and I've lost 2.5 inches from my waist and 2 from my hips. Overall pretty bloody happy! Thanks everyone for your support so far.

Like I say, am continuing on til Friday then am going to shift to maintenance. I'm a bit scared......

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/08/2017 08:01

Well done Phyllis that's a great result.

Just checking in from South Wales- it's peeing it down with rain and needless to say it has not been the best week foodwise! Walking miles though. I've stuck to the basics for the most part but have also had a few treats and lots of wine. Expecting a substantial gain when I return!

OP posts:
ellsbellls · 01/08/2017 08:41

phyllis - that is bloody amazing!! You should be delighted and proud of yourself for sticking with it!

Bear - also in South Wales so can sympathise about the crap weather!

We go away next week. It will only be week 7 for me then. It's AI so l think I will try to stick to good food choices but not count calories- or that's the plan anyway...

APlaceOnTheCouch · 01/08/2017 13:33

Phyllis that's a brilliant result! Well done!
I had a night out - I had mac and cheese, and lots of gin - but I was good most of last week in preparation and I've been walking lots so I hope it balances out.

yumyumpoppycat · 01/08/2017 14:12

Well done on planning for night out aplace must have been lovely to just enjoy your night out.

Bear shame about the weather hope its still a good hol, sounds like you haven't let it put you off if still going for walks etc

Phyllis that is brilliant congrats on your 8 weeks!

Have a good hol ells.

I am sort of 16:8 ing at the mo, have had a couple of good days foodwise but chocolate has been calling me today

APlaceOnTheCouch · 01/08/2017 17:00

yum I am desperate for chocolate. I was going through DS' chocolate box. Unlike me, he doesn't really like it so he always has a box full of chocolate that he has been given. I was looking at it longingly Sad

yumyumpoppycat · 01/08/2017 17:16

Aplace that is restraint an unwanted chocolate box is very tempting. I did cave and have a bit but managed to stop myself from catastrophizing and had an omelette for lunch which filled me up and seemed to put a stop to the cravings.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 01/08/2017 19:08

It was only restraint because I feel if I'm going to eat chocolate, I want it to be nice Grin I ended up nipping to the shops and bought some dark salted caramel Lindt instead Blush

mrssmith79 · 02/08/2017 07:39

Morning all Smile Just dipping a first toe in this morning, I've read all 7 threads over the last few weeks and started BSD on Monday.
Have dabbled in vlcd / weight watchers / you name it, in the past. Bought the book back in May and read it cover to cover over the weekend. I've got a lot to lose and the big 40 is looming so I've made a commitment to myself. Am 2.3kg (5lbs) down since Monday. Can't weight to see what the end of week 1 brings.
