Blood sugar diet thread 7

Here's thread seven for the Blood Sugar Diet followers.

It's 5 weeks and 5 days until school breaks up (may vary by region!) so let's get those bodies lean for Summer!

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

Tobee I had that. Eat more fat and drink more and see if that helps.

I am fighting temptation at every turn today! The kids are eating ice cream and I want to steal the entire bowl and run away!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/07/2017 18:59

Fallen spectacularly off the wagon today. In fact, after I fell off the wagon, I actually ate the wagon too.

Will be starting again, full of remorse tomorrow.

Thanks for the reassurance guys.

Gah, I've made a mistake today with my dinner and have come in 1,228 cal and 59 carbs. All good food and no sugar or starch as such, just too much of it. Bugger! Sad

Buffet party tomorrow at MIL and FIL's, so that will be tough. I'll see what the scale says tomorrow, hopefully it will be good news and that will be enough to keep me going.

Flightywoman · 15/07/2017 19:57

I am going out tonight - gin and tonic all the way for me!

I'm ok for food cals, the liquid ones will take it high but there ya go! Sometimes you need a blow-out Wink

Perdyboo · 15/07/2017 23:17

Enjoy Flighty!!
Panda a lot of us have worked out the calories in the book recipes are actually higher so if you have gone over, but still in the main principles you may not find too much impact...
Bear, good luck with that wagon!!
We had harissa turkey (harissa chicken in the book) and it was lovely but the salad made sooo much I can't believe you were meant to eat all of it!!! There are haricot beans in the salad and the kids were like HmmConfused. So funny!!

Nomoocluck · 16/07/2017 00:08

Just checking in - was quite low with no losses the last time I posted. Scales still haven't really budged but I've been on holiday for the last few days and eating close to 1400 cals with some carbs Inc bread. There I've confessed!
Doing loads of exercise though and a few people I haven't seen in a while have commented on the weight loss and me looking much trimmer - I'll take that as a NSV.
The plan is to reduce the carbs right down again but I'll allow myself to go over if compensated for by exercise. Not a tricky BSD I know but I'm on holiday so playing fast and loose with the rules. Besides, I haven't got any scales here to keep me on track Blush

tobee · 16/07/2017 01:08

Ok so I succumbed to date night. But my first bad(ish) night in 9 1/2 weeks. So I had a full fat g&t and some wasabi peas. Then at dinner I had a big glass of wine and prawns in panko breadcrumbs. There. There's carbs right there. But my main course was a California burger which is a great big bunless burger wrapped in lettuce. It came with fries and salad. I immediately gave dh my fries and nicked his salad. So. I was quite good. But maybe quite calorie-tastique! Still it was fun. And I exercised after. Ok walked around Soho. It felt very summery; busy and with only a t shirt on (my top half). Bit of a holiday feel all in all!

EagleRay · 16/07/2017 11:28

Hi - I've not posted for a while but thought I would update!

I started BSD back in early May and my starting weight was 76.1. It was an extremely challenging time to be doing it as DD1 was seriously ill in hospital and we were sleep deprived and under immense stress, but I also realised that if I didn't get on and do it (had planned to do it before she got ill) I would probably end up with a massive weight gain due to the nature of food available at the hospital and the sedentary, sleep-deprived lifestyle.

So I got on with it and stuck to it for the most part, although I didn't have time to count calories accurately for a lot of it. My weight loss was relatively slow but I reached 70.4kg on the last day and looked rather different!

Since then, I must admit I haven't paid much attention to the next stage of what I should be doing/eating, but I generally now only eat lunch and dinner. I have the occasional treat (cakes etc) but really feel it when I do and they don't have the same appeal. Most days, my diet consists of protein/veg (I'm vegetarian) with the occasional serving of carbs (rice, bread etc) but they are the exception rather than the norm.

I weighed myself a few days ago and I've lost again and am now 69.8kg! It's only a small loss since I finished BSD but it's also successful maintenance and I think I can carry on slowly losing another 5/6kg which would be fantastic. I'm currently the lightest I've been for 8 years, and 10kg below the weight I was 5 years ago when I was first pregnant with DD1.

No one really comments directly on the weight loss as they know we've had an incredibly stressful few months, but I've had a few people say I look amazing, which is nice.

And DD is well on her way to recovery and will be starting school in September with a healthy sized parent dropping her off each day Smile

APlaceOnTheCouch · 16/07/2017 14:59

Eagle that's a brilliant update. I'm glad your DD is doing well and congratulations on continuing to lose - that's really impressive when your life has been so stressful. Flowers

PhyllisWig · 16/07/2017 15:51

Eagle that's immense, well done!

Tobee and Flighty, I hope date nights were good.

Now I had my first challenge in 6 weeks today. Parents took us out for a cafe lunch. I had planned a bowl of soup but when I got there the soup was leek and potato which just seemed too much on such a warm day plus too carby. Rest of the menu was v limited esp for a non meat eater but I went for quiche and salad. With SUPERHUMAN willpower I left the lovely flakey pastry so had quiche innards and garden salad. Per mfp I've gone a bit over but I used a Waitrose crust less quiche equivalent which I believe has pastry on the bottom so carbs may not be as bad as predicted. It was lush though - tomato and goats cheese.

Flightywoman · 16/07/2017 17:45

My night out was lovely - quite a lot of white wine! And then I had quite a few crackers and butter!

But it doesn't seem to have done much immediate damage so I may have dodged a bullet!

Perdyboo · 16/07/2017 19:59

Eagle, I remember you posting - so glad all is going well and great weightloss!
Phyllis, goat's cheese and tomato does sound so lush!!

Perdyboo · 16/07/2017 20:03

Also, I bought a 5:2 recipe magazine and feel like taking it back!! It's so full of sugar and carbs, silly me for thinking I might get some low cal ideas from it or for maintaining in the future!! I know lots of people lose weight that way but having gone through the fog and avoided bread, spuds etc etc this far I was a bit Shock at the idea of them in most recipes!!

ellsbellls · 16/07/2017 20:31

Amazing Eagle! Thanks for posting.

Not so good here today. Early morning spin class was great in theory, but has ended up making me so hungry this evening that I've gone way over on calories. And picked leftovers from kids' plates - which is one of the big things I want to train myself out of. Oh well... tomorrow's a new day.

tobee · 16/07/2017 22:07

Off to West Country tomorrow for dd graduation ceremony and room clear out. First really long drive so will take a pack lunch I think. Bet dh eats boiled sweets on the journey Sad. Then staying over at hotel but with early start for ceremony, no idea what will be on offer food wise, if anything. Nibbles tend to be a carb fest. Before starting this diet I took ds to 4 university open days earlier in the year. They all provided lunch but it was all sandwiches, samosas, sausage rolls, pakoras, crisps, etc. Nightmare for bsd!

Oblomov17 · 17/07/2017 10:38

Well done Eagle! You've done amazingly, in difficult circumstances. Glad dd is in the mend.

Phyllis, I eat quiche inners all the time. With salad.
Plus steak pie inners. With 3 steamed veg. As a dinner.
Because I don't like pastry much. Not sure how 'good' that is, but it can't be too bad carb wise, can it?

I am still maintaining at exactly same Weight. Ok I suppose. 2 weeks till we go to Tenerife for 2 weeks all inclusive. That should be quite manageable, right? I can choose wisely, from the buffet, : lots of bacon, yoghurt, salads, but have the odd cocktail? Please say yes headmistresses Wink......

APlaceOnTheCouch · 17/07/2017 11:36

Oblomov I'm just back from 10 days all inclusive. It's definitely possible to choose wisely and have cocktails. . .but I had more than a few days of eating lots of calories cakes and cocktails are my downfall eg about 2000 cals. The funny thing is I felt absolutely stuffed on those days yet pre-BSD that would have been a fairly normal calorie count for me. I was 3lbs up when I came back less than a week ago but have already lost 2lbs. Don't worry too much. You'll make good choices automatically at the buffet so will consciously choose your treats.

Oblomov17 · 17/07/2017 15:34

Well, well done Couch on your successful management of AI!!

Flightywoman · 17/07/2017 17:45

I may have paid for Saturday this morning!

Tomorrow is my step-mother's funeral. There will be a cart-load of booze and I plan to be about as off-piste as it's possible for one human to be.

Because some days are about other things than my 'diet'...

oldbirdy · 17/07/2017 17:52

My birthday tomorrow, dh's the day after. Cannot resist cake, it is my worst downfall.

If I can maintain this week, I will be made up :)

PhyllisWig · 17/07/2017 18:42

Flighty totally. I hope tomorrow goes as well as it can.

Perdyboo · 17/07/2017 18:52

Flighty, some days are definitely about more. Hope all goes well and you are ok.

Dothbutternoparsnips · 17/07/2017 19:05

Back on after a break since February and 2 stone on (sob).

Am sticking to the menu plant in the recipe book as I've always free styled.

Has anyone else done this for the full 8 weeks?

PhyllisWig · 17/07/2017 20:14

Parsnips tomorrow is end of week 6 and i have every intention of doing the whole 8 weeks. Been on plan every day and just had 2 days throughout where I've sneaked over cals but still stayed lesss than 1000 on those days. Been no where near as bad as I was expecting.

I initially thought I'd manage a month or so so have surprised myself.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/07/2017 20:46

Hi all,
I was ready to throw in the towel this weekend. I have just eaten so much crap, it was like I couldn't control myself. It was like the bad old days. This week will be difficult; it's my birthday on weds and I already have several coffee dates lined up, plus birthday cake bought, then Dh and I are going away on Saturday for a night in a posh hotel, nice meal etc. I can try and pretend that I might try and stick to it, but I'm ruthlessly honest and pretty much know that I won't. I felt horribly defeatist last night and was basically resigned to just being fat forever.

This morning, feeling a bit brighter- I've not counted calories today but have eaten on plan and drunk loads of water. I'm not going to weigh myself for the next few days and just try and detox myself again off the carbs. We go away on the 28th so I don't know if any weightloss is actually achievable with all my commitments, but I don't want to be back like I was this weekend, ever. It was horrible.

You all sound like you're doing well.

Flighty, I think definitely some days are about more than BSD and you should be fine when you get back on it Flowers
