Blood sugar diet thread 7

Here's thread seven for the Blood Sugar Diet followers.

It's 5 weeks and 5 days until school breaks up (may vary by region!) so let's get those bodies lean for Summer!

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

I'm sure the menstrual cycle has a big effect on my cravings. The thing is I no longer have a womb so never know where I am on it Grin. I still have my ovaries and could well be peri meno. No idea!

Thinking of you Bear waiting for yours to start and of Jiggly enjoying the outdoor life!!

CharlieSierra · 09/07/2017 19:00

tobee yes, I believe it's wheat and/or sugar. The last time I felt this well I was eating strictly paleo. I have to accept that bread and cake etc. aren't good for me and it's worth giving them up to feel as good as I do now. I did the low carb bootcamp a couple of years ago and that helped too, but I prefer the wider range of foods on this plan and I'm not keen on all the fat on the really low carb high fat plan.

Flibbertyjibbit · 09/07/2017 19:20

That's interesting Charlie, I have an autoimmune inflammatory condition too - I have noticed my brain fog improving over last few weeks. Sadly no improvement in my fatigue but I am still in a flare up.

Ells I have had a few stalls over the last 6 weeks, I had stuck to 800cals and drunk lots of water but still the scales didn't move. I have just had another few days of no loss. It's really hard to keep motivated when the stalls happen.

Has anyone had dark chocolate on BSD? It's my birthday next week, I was thinking of melting dark chocolate mixing a little cream to serve with raspberries/strawberries. Not on plan but better than cake?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/07/2017 19:39

Flibberty it's my birthday next week too! I've not really had dark chocolate on plan, far more likely to go off plan and have cake! Your idea sounds much better.

I've just been lost on the diet doctor site for ages, but I bet there's some low carb recipes on there that might be nice instead of a birthday cake- I've seen various pancake recipes etc.

Charlie I wondered because I'm on levothyroxine for hypothyroid. Although no one has ever told me if it's hashimotos.

Gah! I love plain chocolate and am sure I read somewhere that 85% or 90% is ok with low carb???? Trouble is I tend to find my 1 square becomes 3 or 4 😬

JigglyTuff · 09/07/2017 19:54

I'm going to eat this tomorrow: www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2015/09/sichuan-style-smashed-cucumber-salad-recipe.html but add some chilli to it

CharlieSierra · 09/07/2017 20:07

It's interesting to hear from other autoimmune sufferers. I've got ankylosing spondylitis, psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. I'm not on anything except anti inflammatories at the moment but I'm due at the rheumatologist later this month with a view to starting methotrexate. I think she's going to say I'm too well now, which is great but only if it lasts. Even my skin is clearing, I had a huge patch on my lower back which was thick plaque and it's vanished, just suddenly.

I don't like plain chocolate much but I think a little is fine on this plan. Honestly I'm not in favour of replacing baked goods, I'd rather just say not whilst on the strict plan and then have the real thing very occasionally later on. I think there are a few treats in the recipe book though.

PhyllisWig · 09/07/2017 20:23

Sorry for the pity party earlier. I'm pulled myself together, had something to eat and whilst I still feel tired, definitely less 'ill'.

Bear, interestingly i did allow myself to have a tuna sandwich and salad for tea - ok it was livlife bread and I'm still comfortably within limits for today but it was the closest I've come to 'cheating' as I try to stick to only a couple of slices of bread a week.

I definitely struggle more with energy on days where I don't have eggs for breakfast too. Luckily j'aime les oeufs!

Jiggly, that's so on my menu this week (with chilli, natch). We have a glut of home grown cucumbers to work through and I'm Loki g for options.

Flibbertyjibbit · 09/07/2017 20:36

I've got psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, was on methotrexate for over 5 years, switched to sulfasalazine a few months ago. Am now on my 5th biologic treatment. I've been on steroids for 15 years so have developed secondary addissons disease. I'm having a review meeting with consultant this week as they are thinking of changing me to a new biologic treatment.

Bear the cream cheese pancakes I made back in week 2 were great, highly recommend those if you want something sweet but not cake. I added cinnamon to the batter and served with raspberries.

I saw waitrose advertising a new lower carb loaf made by hovis, there is are white, seeded and wholemeal options. Average carbs is 10g/slice so a lot higher than livlife but a possibility for maintenance, I might treat myself to a slice with a poached egg for my birthday such decadence, a slice of bread!

Love this thread. Just having a reread, have found myself with a rare hour or so - kids in bed, hubby out, me in front of telly and sudden thoughts invading head of raiding/mooching cupboards for icecream/whatever else might be around. Have had my calories today, totally not hungry. On one hand, isn't it interesting this making me feel like this. Otoh, aarrgghh!!
Got to get through this, though am wondering if I have the ingredients for those cream cheese pancakes.
I could go over calories for some ham wrapped round a babybel...

Flightywoman · 10/07/2017 10:57

Good morning! My WI day, this week I've lost 1 & 1/4 lbs. 26lbs in total in 10 weeks.

I am pleased, particularly with the wildly off-piste events of earlier in the week.

I'm going to try and make extra effort this week, I want to bust that 2 stone barrier!

Have a good day...

tobee · 10/07/2017 13:21

Weigh in on Friday lost 1lb. Weigh in today (proper day) no loss. The general trend is down. Not seen Friday's figure in two years. Keeping things in perspective. KBO.

Perdyboo · 10/07/2017 15:33

That's fab both of you!! I succumbed to ham and cheese last night - could have been worse. Totally on it for this week. Saturday will be week 7 and I am 4lb off having lost two stone, so I want to be two stone something lighter by week 8 weigh in, totally with you Flighty!
Tobee - isn't it fab hitting a figure you haven't seen in a while?? X

oldbirdy · 10/07/2017 15:52

My weigh in this morning - half a pound off! Was 3 lb on Friday. However lost an inch off my waist do I am keeping the faith.

Getting heartily sick of eggs, spinach and mushrooms in various combinations 😁

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/07/2017 15:57

Great losses everyone!
I didn't even weigh myself this morning, in fact I have asked Dh to hide the scales so I can't weight myself til next week. Followed my menu to the letter today, and that had basically meant I have eaten very little so far as my tea tonight is quite calorific, (I'm doing a sort of texmex mince with cheese, sour cream and guacamole)

Oldbirdy have you looked at the Diet Doctor website?

I'm also enjoying stuff from Minimalist Baker blog minimalistbaker.com/

Also the Appetite for Reduction book - both are calorie counted. The book is linked to the writer's website -

Imaginative veggie/vegan cooking!

oldbirdy · 10/07/2017 16:59

Flighty I am currently on week 3 of a 12 week paid course via bsd website. It makes menus shopping list etc. I felt I needed the discipline and support having got a bit complacent following the bad recipe books since March. It does make planning easy but they do seem to rely heavily on spinach leaves 😂

oldbirdy · 10/07/2017 17:00

Once I finish this course I will branch out more, those links will be very helpful, thanks 😊

oldbirdy · 10/07/2017 17:00

Not bad recipe books. Bsd recipe books. They are quite nice actually 😁

alem · 10/07/2017 17:53

I am so encouraged by all your stories of nearly getting to 2 stone in 8 weeks . I've only done 4 days , and I'm eager to start seeing results!
I'm cooking the Spanish chicken with chorizo with beans, from the recipe book tonight... I might be a little over the 800 cals today 🙁 but with food that is on the plan 😉
I didn't menu plan ahead, and it's obviously one of those meals to be eaten on a 2 meal day, not a 3 meal day!

Flightywoman · 10/07/2017 18:23

I've been grazing a bit this afternoon, so I'm going to count the things I've grazed as tea!

I'm SO HOT!

This week's NSV involves corsetry! I have ones that were the right size a few weeks ago which now do up with the sides nearly meeting - and I don't tight-lace. And my smaller corset, which was too small, is now the right size and comfortable.

I've just bought a new one for my sister's wedding which is SO beautiful and currently 1-2 sizes smaller. It is the basis for my masked ball costume. And I WILL be wearing it!

Perdyboo · 10/07/2017 20:48

Ooh Flighty we need pictures of your costume and my second ooh to the appetite for reduction, cheers for the link!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/07/2017 21:09

My texmex mince was absolutely yummy, looked awful, but was sooooo tasty! Definitely going on the menu again.

Every meal I've done from that diet doctor site has been delicious, but as it's simply s low carb/keto plan they are very calorific! I had to modify my recipe to bring it down and it was still over 450 cals.

Had a good day today, come in at 850 cals so very pleased with that.

Evening all, food looks great and well done on everyone's losses. Very motivating! I'm definitely going to look at the diet doctor website. For me, one of the key things is definitely to make a challenge out of making 800 cals stretch as far as possible and be as tasty as possible.

I managed to get through a friend's birthday BBQ yesterday without too much trouble. Probably went a tiny bit over on calories but also managed a body pump class in the morning. Quite difficult saying no to canapés though when you are practically being force fed them!

Today pretty good. Had flaxseed and yoghurt, raisins and cinnamon for breakfast at 9.30 and didn't feel hungry again until 4.

Have decided to weigh myself every day so that the weekly weigh in is no longer such a 'big deal' and so I can prove to myself that my weight goes up and down al the time. We'll see how that goes....

PhyllisWig · 11/07/2017 07:37

Weigh in day today for the end of week 5 and 1.5 lbs off (which is 3/4 lb more than yesterday - typical Grin). So am down to 10 stone 5.5 and a total loss of 18lbs now I think.

Given my first target was 10 st 7, and I am the lightest I've been since puberty I am pretty chuffed! If I can get down to under 10stone 2 in the next 3 weeks then I'll have reached my ultimate goal! That's only 3lb so fingers crossed that's doable.

After my mammoth whinge on Sunday I felt heaps better yesterday and even managed a slow but fun run (which is why I think my weight went up as I'm achey today and aches = water for me). Onwards and downwards!
