Blood sugar diet thread 7

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/06/2017 13:53

Here's thread seven for the Blood Sugar Diet followers.

It's 5 weeks and 5 days until school breaks up (may vary by region!) so let's get those bodies lean for Summer!

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

I did a random weigh in this morning and have reached my first target weight. It wasn't set in stone but was what I weighed after my six weeks post operative rest 2 years ago. Bit random but...

JigglyTuff · 08/07/2017 15:12

I am wearing trousers that I couldn't get on last summer and which now it comfortably.

I had a vodka and slimline last night and then went over calories. Not enormously but alcohol clearly brings out the ' fuck it' in me.

Which is unfortunate as I'm on a school camping trip and drinking is the only way through it. Am going o try and avoid carbs if I can. Wish me luck!

tobee · 08/07/2017 18:36

So I'm going to try and make my own low carb recipe fish cakes tonight using cauli mash instead of potato. I always find when I make fish cakes that there is to much mixture so I will probably freeze leftovers. I hope that will work. You can have frozen caul so it should be ok. I think.

Perdyboo · 08/07/2017 18:53

Go Jiggly!!!
My son's face when he bought two hot dogs, gave one to me and I didn't eat the bread Hmm

Flightywoman · 08/07/2017 19:59

Tobee I had the Livlife low carb bread - I got it in Waitrose and keep it in the freezer, I have it once or twice in 10 days maybe, not often. But I do like it occasionally, it tastes really nice and has a proper texture to it.

I've walked over 5 miles today, sung, danced, played in the sunshine and had a lovely day.

I've ended on 1000ish calories which will do for me.

JigglyTuff · 08/07/2017 20:01

I am pissed. I've had a hot dog, two marmite cheddar things and some olives. And a lot of wine. I've not bothered counting.

Mother of hangovers tomorrow! BlushGrin

tobee · 08/07/2017 21:36

GrinJiggly

I can't find that bread or any equivalent Flighty. Hmm. Sounds good.

What is wrong with me? I made fish pie with cauli mash the other day which tasted lovely but was the texture of porridge. Note to self at time:- don't use my electric wand to mash the cauliflower. So I make my fish cakes tonight and what do I do? Put everything in the food processor and they fell to bits. Taste nice though. I need to remember to mash with a manual masher for my texture. Maybe even cook earlier and let to dry out in fridge before mashing.

CharlieSierra · 08/07/2017 22:26

Ocado sell the bread if that helps at all?

I've tried various recipes for lower carb fish cakes over the past couple of years and they've all been crap. I just have fish now.

Flightywoman · 08/07/2017 23:24

I was thinking of a thai-style fish cake - they don't appear to have a carb content usually.

Mind you, I am relatively relaxed about the odd bit of flour or a breadcrumb or two - even though I do avoid the things made from them as a rule, I don't object to them as an ingredient in small quantities, very occasionally!

tobee · 08/07/2017 23:32

Too be honest my potato based fishcakes always looked like I'd used them in a snow ball contest before serving. They do taste nice though.

tobee · 08/07/2017 23:33

Thanks Charlie - will look.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/07/2017 07:06

Morning everyone

Went out last night, didn't go too wild but did have 4x gin cocktails (so prob very high in sugar as they had fruit juice) and a glass of wine. Nice evening but struggled to get to sleep and was awake at 6.08 after only 4 hours sleep. I will regret that later, but currently watching fireman Sam with Ds and having a coffee.

Big push for me this week, although I am slightly very concerned that my period still hasn't arrived. I'm rubbish with dates but Reading back through my posts on here I reckon it's probably 5 weeks since. I am normally pretty regular. I am hoping and praying that it's due to my diet or something similar.

Will menu plan later for the week and do the shopping list. Definitely will use the diet doctors recipes, the two I tried from there this week were awesome.

I was right about the hangover Shock

I was woken by a football being kicked against the side of the tent just before 6am AngryAngry

ellsbellls · 09/07/2017 08:11

Hi all, is it ok to join? Currently two weeks in and looking for some moral support Smile. After a great 5 lb loss in week one, the scales have stalled already today at the end of week two. Despite feeling a bit slimmer around the middle and clothes feeling a little looser, it's hard not to get demotivated... Anyone else experienced a stall so early on?

I've got about 3 stone to lose ( the same 3 stone that I have lost and put on my whole adult life!!!). I am genuinely starting to believe that having hit 40 and yo yo dieted my whole life, my body is now immune to losing weight!

Any advice from you seasoned bsd'ers please?

oldbirdy · 09/07/2017 08:37

Morning everyone. Ells I am also two weeks in, due to weigh in tomorrow but at about 6 pounds. I haven't had a great week, I had a terrible reaction end of week one with headaches so bad they made me vomit, and I've been left a bit scared of going too low on calories.

Anyway that wasn't a problem yesterday, I went to a party and unleashed my inner carb fiend after a glass of wine. There was a table full of desserts and I think I tried a bit of almost everything. All the savoury stuff was bread, pasta or rice based. Sigh. Luckily no hangover as I stopped drinking early and swapped to diet Coke. Heaven knows what the scales will say in the morning 😮

Oblomov17 · 09/07/2017 08:50

Laughing at Jiggly and her football alarm clock awakening!
Like her I have a hangover, from a bottle of white wine I drank at a South African Party last night. Blush

ellsbellls · 09/07/2017 09:30

Hope the scales are kinder to you tomorrow oldbirdy. I think I'd be a bit less annoyed with the stall if I'd fallen off the wagon, but I haven't. The only things I can think of that may have contributed are too many coffees, rubbish sleep and a bit of a high stress time at work.

I've found sticking to the 800 calories and minimal carbs pretty ok so far. I'm quite good with rules and I believe the science behind it, which helps. Interestingly, the hardest day for me was Friday when I had porridge for breakfast for the first time (from the book) and was absolutely ravenous for the rest of the day.

Anyway, onwards...

Perdyboo · 09/07/2017 10:50

Welcome Ells, right there with you but this is the first time I have managed to drop more than my usual weight loss/gain zone, so go for it!!
We have just diy breakfasted in the hotel room, about to head home. Who knew that I would ever prefer beetroot hummus salad for breakfast instead of standard + extra toast???
Worked yesterday out as 926 calories (inc hotdog) but fitbit confirms why my feet hurt - 20936 steps - over 9 miles!!
Long hours at work next week, prep required.
Tentatively want to ask Jiggly what she did with the football...??!

JigglyTuff · 09/07/2017 10:55

I just lay there, cursing silently Perdy (didn't want to wake DS up)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who drank a bottle of wine yesterday Oblomov Blush

PhyllisWig · 09/07/2017 13:49

Ells, I had that - stopped losing at the end of week 2 then had a week of nothing then a sudden drop of 3lbs at the v end of week 3. I'm coming into the end of wk 5 (how did that happen!) and have strictly lost 17lb (although I think more like 13 of real weight as I'd had a bit of a pre diet binge). I was only just over a stone overweight so not loads to lose but had lost 4 stone a couple of years before and had never been able to lose that last but.

Reason I mention this is to say this could really be a way for you to break the pattern but blips and plateaus are hard but normal. Good luck and power on through!

PhyllisWig · 09/07/2017 16:54

Sorry for being a moaning Minnie as I'm aware I can be quite the miserable drama llama but does anyone feel drained quite a lot of the time?

Almost at the end of week 5 and I've had another 2 days of feeling shite. Achy, feverish, headaches and v v tired. I suspect another virus rather than any kind of carb flu but since I've started this I just haven't had any omph. It doesn't help that I've been undergoing an asthma diagnosis (we think) and a stressy busy time at work but I don't think I've felt energetic since I've started this.

I know I plan to reintroduce some unrefined carbs in moderation after the 8 weeks as I am struggling to exercise and think I need the energy boost. Is the feeling ropey and tired just a coincidence do you think?

I'm going to plough on but it is making the experience not brilliant. It's like I've got nothing in the tank when I need it iyswim.

CharlieSierra · 09/07/2017 17:56

Phyllis I have an autoimmune inflammatory disease and often feel utterly exhausted. I'd been quite unwell for over a year. Since I started this diet I have been feeling much better and more energetic, no foggy brain days at all. I have sometimes felt very hungry and a couple of times I knew I had nothing left in the tank and needed to eat, but those times were both after a really busy and long day at work. I think generally ropey and tired is probably due to other reasons, although obviously this diet won't suit everyone.

tobee · 09/07/2017 18:10

Ells hello! I definitely wouldn't be worried about not losing this week. Somewhere up thread someone helpfully posted something about weight loss stopping and it not being straightforward. I seem to remember that technically a stall is only a stall when it's 4 weeks with no weight loss. I know that just sounds like semantics but I found it reassuring to see there are many stages of weight loss and that you only need to start re assessing what you are eating if nothing shifts for a month.

Phyllis yes definitely have had patches of feeling I'm running on fumes, especially with this heat. Haven't been sure what to put it down to. But the idea of exercise on top of bsd can sometimes laughable. Coming on here helps me "keep the faith" Grin

I found myself asking dh, for the first time since starting, about going on a "date night". Which usually involves drinking and eating out.

tobee · 09/07/2017 18:13

Charlie just seen your post. Do you think you've felt better because of the gluten free element of this diet? If you are now close to gluten free. Or do you put it down to less sugar? I believe people link gluten intolerance and auto immune disease.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/07/2017 18:22

Phyllis I get that sluggish feeling too. Not tired as such, but just 'low' and 'meh' about the whole thing. Oddly, I think it's the fat. I think for me, if I go too long eating good but boring meals, I just cannot get any enthusiasm about my food and can't drag myself out of it. I definitely miss the energy boost of carbs and the little high of sugar.

I don't advocate this at all but I was talking to a lady last night who did Cambridge- very very low calorie soup/shake diet with about 200 calories carb free food. She said after about 4 days you go into ketosis and she said she just felt absolutely wired, really bouncing with energy. That is so not how I'm feeling right now, but some people on this plan do say that they experience this energetic feeling so I wonder what they're doing that I'm not?!

I've had a terrible weekend food wise. Literally awful. Nice, obviously. But awful! I'm horrifically pre-menstrual and just lost the power to control myself. I know I've got a hard slog now the next two and a half weeks and I need to drum up the motivation from somewhere. I think the threat that I will very likely be back in the 12's this week if i don't stop this should hopefully inspire me.....
