Blood sugar diet thread 7

Here's thread seven for the Blood Sugar Diet followers.

It's 5 weeks and 5 days until school breaks up (may vary by region!) so let's get those bodies lean for Summer!

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

Flipping scales haven't budged again. I have the same thoughts about maintenance as you Phyllis. My vague plan is to keep low carbing properly esp at lunchtimes during the week, with a couple of 800 cal days thrown in so I can have some leeway at the weekends when all the family and social eating happens.

You can do it bear! It's a way of life now so that was a blip not the norm!

Right, I've planned my meals for the day and it comes to 816 cals. Now just need to avoid any snackcidents.

JigglyTuff · 01/07/2017 09:27

Scales have also barely shifted for me over the last few days too. Very frustrating.

PhyllisWig · 01/07/2017 09:47

Yes NoMoo, that's my plan too - Mondays are always the easiest day for me to be very sensible and low carb breakfast and lunch in the week is both easy and cheap. I can also see me sticking with the livlife bread - I am not a huge bread eater and will happily have a loaf in the freezer for weekend toast.

Bear huge sympathies. I really understand the feeling of being captive to your hormones - after years of infertility I got to know my cycle like the back of my hand and could really see the correlation between mood/hunger/anxiety.

Are you seeing any improvement? What about trying low carb without reducing the calories? See if that helps then moving to bsd? It's so tough to deal with both physically and mentally and something I do find others can struggle to understand the impact of as it's 'natural' and invisible.

Flibbertyjibbit · 01/07/2017 11:09

Hope you have a better few days ahead bear hormones really do suck.

Very long morning travelling & then manic afternoon. We all collapsed when we got home at 8pm - takeaway ordered and bottle of wine opened. I went for grilled chicken satay skewers with no sauce, and tempura prawns. Not totally on plan but the best options available, all the sides were rice or potato based. Very off plan 2 glasses of wine - oops! Hoping afternoon stroll today will burn off the calories from wine.

I've been starting to think about maintenance/carrying on, tempted to do reverse 5:2. So mon-fri carry on with 800cals and then relax cals but stick to on plan meals at weekend. I've still got a lot to lose so hoping this would be a more sustainable approach?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/07/2017 11:16

Thanks everyone

I had a nice BSD friendly breakfast, flat mushroom with cheese and bacon, and will just have to keep on trying! The problem with these lapses is that every day is day 1; every day is detox day. That Makes the plan harder to stick to I guess.

Coming up to the end of week 4 for me, and 3.5 weeks until we go away so plenty of time to get back on track

OP posts:
Flightywoman · 01/07/2017 11:52

I was over calories yesterday, but not by falling in to carbs. I even refused a take away! Though there was some gin - rhubarb gin. OMG it's so delicious! I found it hard to stop at 2 because it's gorgeous!

My WI day is Monday but I normally start to see any loss on Friday and it's tempting to change. BUT a Monday keeps me in check over the weekend...

So I'm staying on track and hoping I can shift another half pound this weekend!

ShutUpLegs · 01/07/2017 12:30

Week 4 is drawing to a close and I have lost 17lbs. Went out for my birthday supper with the kids and I didn't eat all day to save calroies for the evening meal. I had mezze (veggie and low carb - fed all my pitta to DD2) but caved on some baklawa with coffee. Probably not even 2,000 cal all told but eating it all in one go made me feel SO ill.I hve munchies to day for the first time - don't know if its related.

ANyway, BMI is now 26.1 and my last Hba1c test is down to 36 so I backing away from being pre-diabetic. Target is still 10lbs to go...

tobee · 01/07/2017 14:26

Did my bmi calculation today. Only down to 27.8, Sadit goes very slowly doesn't it?

Went to ds leavers celebration/ summer fete thing. Knew there would be champagne so drove to avoid temptation. Thought there would be coffee but no. Dh got me the only alternative to champagne which was some kind of cranberry and orange fizz thing. I drank it all. Good grief, it felt like it was alcohol from the sugar rush I got from it. Bizarre!

PhyllisWig · 01/07/2017 15:22

I have bought jersey clotted cream. Diet food.

tobee · 01/07/2017 20:26

Hooray! On way out for dd birthday Chinese dinner. I couldn't do these trousers up this time last year or 8 weeks ago!

Completely unrelated to BSD but oooooh Tobee I love your floor and sofa!
Trousers look good too!

OP posts:
tobee · 02/07/2017 00:11

Why, thank you don't look too close!

Back from Chinese. Pretty good on carb front. Not on calories. Glass of wine. Stuffed.

Perdyboo · 02/07/2017 01:13

Well done tobee (loving the floor too!!)
So I posted earlier, but it doesn't seem to have uploaded - I was on tube at the time so....
In short, week 5 weigh in today - 3lb off to 14.11 making 1st 9 in total Grin
I went to boot camp for the first time today and while I did half reps to everyone else, I did the whole session if you get what I mean. Did feel like I would pass out or throw up at one point but I didn't, so success!!
DS1 and me picked up protein pots from Aldi to eat on the drive down. I got black coffee and smoked almonds from services and put a goat's cheese and beetroot hummus salad in the hotel fridge for when we got in. We were at Hyde Park and I thought it would be difficult to navigate the street food / dirty burgers but actually it was sooo busy, we drank water and walked a couple of tube stops to leave the crowd. He has had a McDs but that salad was yummy, only now I don't know whether to count it for yesterday or today! Knew I'dgo over calories yesterday but not carbs and I forgot to wear fitbit to boot camp, but it's telling me 14400 steps, over 6 miles so I might just leave that salad in limbo and make sure the rest of day tomorrow is on plan.
PS Totally agree with the mood/hormone comments.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/07/2017 07:53

Morning everyone!
This is the end of week 4 for me today and I don't think I'm even going to weigh myself tomorrow! I have had a bloody awful weekend. Going to try very hard to get back on it today. Lots of water, try to fast until lunchtime, and just hopefully get my head back in the plan a bit.

I'll be writing my menu and shopping list in a bit as well- it really worked for me at the start of the week to have every morsel of food pre-counted and all the measurements written out so my calories were all taken care of. To be fair I did actually have 3 pretty good days, it was Wednesday night wine (thanks dh!) that set me off. Maybe the week won't be too horrendous overall.

I've got 3.5 weeks until we go away. during that time I have my birthday, and a night away in a posh hotel in Cheltenham, but other than that I should (should) be able to have a few clear weeks when I can be on plan.

Oblomov17 · 02/07/2017 08:43

Morning everyone.

I too love Tobee's floor and sofa!!

Bear, I totally get the hormonal bit. This whole thing is very hormonal isn't it? Why we all eat the way we do, behave the way we do, for example what we do after the initial falling off the wagon.

I have been having a wierd time. I worked so hard leading up to ds2's holy communion. Since then I've eaten ok meal wise, but eaten loads of crisps and chocolate. Oh dear. Rebellion?

And I too have been craving salty. Presumably we need to drink more water?

Also, I had a 'realisation'. This week. Someone posted a photo of me and Ds2 at his sports day. It was actually a lovely photo and I looked ok. But, I thought I was thinner than I actually am. I thought I looked better than I actually do!!! Sad

Despite my initial weight loss on BSD, I still look pretty much the same, and now realise I do actually need to lose quite a bit more extra weight. I had been kidding myself that I only needed to lose another 1/2 stone. Err, not so!!

I need to up the anti. We are all going to Tenerife is a few weeks, then I'm off to Benidorm/Magaluf - someone equally naff, with Ds1's football team mum's. Then to Budapest with my 3 closest friends.

I don't want to still look like I did at Sports Day.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/07/2017 09:19

Oblo yes definitely to the hormones. I was diagnosed with pcos over 10 years ago and the only advice given by my gp at that time was 'you must control your insulin'. It never affected my fertility thankfully (if anything the opposite, two 'surprises' later) but over the years I have read a lot about it and it appears she was right. The problem with pcos is that unless it is affecting your fertility there's little they can or will do, and the only remedy is the contraceptive pill which I'm very disinclined to go on as I am incredibly hormonal- cue vicious circle! When I did this plan properly last year, damnit even at the beginning of this round 4 weeks ago, I felt so much more balanced. My body just likes to throw curve balls sometimes and I haven't developed strategies to cope with them.

Have you done your measurements oblo? The camera lies sometimes and I wouldn't let one photo affect your feeling of success.

Wow Oblo, that's quite a tour you're going on!! What bear said - take measurements and whatever you think you see, the weightloss will be making a difference so keep going. For all that I've lost so far in weight and inches, I'm down to a 18/loose 16 so I must have been really squeezing into 18s before. (Or there was loads of internal visceral fat to go???) And I will have to keep going far beyond 8 weeks, so am with you!!!
Bear, isn't it interesting the hormonal stuff. I was diagnosed pcos years ago and there is a big age gap between my kids because of all sorts of shenanigans. But am totally with you that my step to feeling better was not being on the pill, coil, anything releasing stuff into my system and part of the penny dropping with bsd was because I knew I had an issue with insulin resistance and I didn't want to go to the doctors for that now you're 40 check up and be told I was diabetic or prediabetic. Still haven't made the appointment - maybe when I'mthrough 8 weeks!!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/07/2017 10:25

Perdy yes I agree. My problem as well is that I literally haven't been to my gp regarding pcos, in over 10 years. I just accept it and its delightful side effects I guess, probably because it didn't cause any problems with fertility so I just felt the other things are 'aesthetics' and not actual 'illness'. It's common though for pcos sufferers to be: binge eaters, carb cravers, suffer with pmt, insulin resistant, find it hard to lose weight etc etc. (Check, check, check, check, and check) - perhaps I should go to gp for an mot. We also are much more likely to develop gd and t2 diabetes.

Despite saying I wouldn't, I have stepped on the scales and while I have gained a pound this week that is all. It could have been a lot worse. I've now hidden the scales, they are driving me doolally weighing every day. Once I read on a healthy blog 'weigh your food not yourself' so that is my mantra this week- focus on the plan, the food, the calories, and the results will show.

OP posts:
FizzPopping · 02/07/2017 13:51

I've also had a PCOS diagnosis for years but no medical input and do feel this woe definitely suits it but all of the description you gave Bear definitely rings true.

As I had a bit more time today I gave the beetroot falafels from the book a go and loved them. Bit messy with grating the raw beetroot but worth it

Flightywoman · 02/07/2017 16:47

My WI is tomorrow. I don't think I'll have lost 1/2lb, but some has gone this week.

I was concentrating on baking this morning so I missed breakfast and then had 3 slices of salami and 2 mini cheeses for lunch.

OTOH, I did have a piece of Victoria sponge at the Brownies afternoon tea!

But I'm still within calories so should do ok on the day if I don't go bananas later on!

PhyllisWig · 02/07/2017 17:33

I hate my entire family, parents husband and children. Bastards the lot of them Wink

We went to a local park place with an incredible cafe. We had a lovely walk in the sunshine then DH and the kids had massive ice creams. My 'mother' had an incredible looking bakewell slice. Only my daddy keeps his place on my Christmas list. I treated myself to a Diet Coke and found it too sweet.

I am pre menstrual and hungry and not to be trifled with! And they messed with me. They WILL regret it.......

Perdyboo · 02/07/2017 17:34

Bear, am echoing your check, check, check and check. Like you, since coming off everything I haven't been to docs about it but since last year having the gallstones/pancreatis (wouldn't wish it on anybody) and reading about pancreas/insulin etc etc it was the wake up call I needed - and you're right, feel much more balanced on plan!!
Fizz I love beetroot and those falafels look gem!!
Weigh your food not yourself - I like it but I don't know if I can do it, to be honest everytime I step on the scales I have expect to see my heavy weight back on there! I have to reassure myself!!
When I logged food on fitbit, it put the hotel salad on today, have just got home and hubby has made burgers, so am going to have those in lettuce leaves instead of bread and that should make today ok....
Flighty, my hat is off, I don't know how you can bake and ignore it!!
Have a good week all Smile

Flightywoman · 02/07/2017 19:03

I was being really focused Perdy!

I made scones, chocolate chip cookies and a massive chocolate fudge cake. I had a third of a scone to test them, and when we had tea my husband chose the fudge cake so I had a forkful - it's pretty damn awesome, even though I say it myself!

I chose the vict sponge because I do love a good sponge and it was gorgeous - really light and airy. Plus it was cream rather than buttercream, so not masses of extra sugar.

Somehow I've only had 15g of carbs today!
