Blood sugar diet thread 7

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/06/2017 13:53

Here's thread seven for the Blood Sugar Diet followers.

It's 5 weeks and 5 days until school breaks up (may vary by region!) so let's get those bodies lean for Summer!

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

Bear that's great - I know exactly what you mean about being calm. Even tonight after a long and tough day I was able to make good choices. It's empowering isn't it.

And I think you're saying my DH is wrong. Which is always the correct view.

Flightywoman · 27/06/2017 22:09

I've gone straight back in control!

765 cals, 26% carbs (46g) that suits me nicely.

We had pasta and chickpeas for supper which is a big favourite - I had courgetti and it was good. Not the same but still nice.

FizzPopping · 27/06/2017 22:21

Thanks for the welcome. Great to hear how others are doing.

I made the spicy beanburgers from the book for dinner and had them with salad, really enjoyed them and pretty filling.

Adding those ingredients and my lunch which both came out over the book figures, I think I'm around 900 cals today but now I know I'll try and enter next couple of days into MFP ahead of time so I can adjust portions to stay within 800

PinkBlossomTree · 28/06/2017 08:03

I'm part way through week 6 now and I've had a change of heart. At the beginning I decided I was doing a maximum of 3-4 weeks as it was so hard the first few days. Up until then I had been doing 5:2 but every day at 800 calories seemed difficult.

But now it seems so much easier and actually 800 calories does go quite far.

Can I ask, anyone who has boiled eggs or eggs how many cals are they each? My MFP logs mine at 2 eggs for 80 cals but my friend who is just logging calories not doing this diet keeps saying a egg is 80 calories.

Does anyone know? Maybe it depends on brand as the ones I bought from Tesco seem massive compared to the normal Asda ones we buy.

yumyumpoppycat · 28/06/2017 08:15

Pink a small egg is around 65 cals ish a large egg would be more like 80 - if you look in the box it gives the cals per egg usually.

Well done everyone - you seem a really determined round of BSDers - delicious food and on track! I am still struggling to get back into the swing of it -head defo needs to be in the right place doesn't it.

also agree portioned cheese is useful - I have been very tempted by catering packs of butters in Costco.

waves to everyone

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/06/2017 08:19

Mine says 66 for a medium and 74 for a large egg. I always charge 74 unless they are really small looking.

If in doubt about calories on my app I use a supermarket home delivery website and check it on there- takes a bit of time but I have gradually built up my own 'library' of the things I use on my app now. It's usually veg I find to be hugely variable, and obviously then the carb counts are way out too.

Bit of a grey day here today- ds and i are going to the barbers to scream so loudly we wake the dead for a trim, then coming home to do some sorting out and tidying up. Then back to the barbers with ds1 when he comes out of school although luckily he doesn't scream much. Should increase the steps though, I don't seem to do much of anything energetic these days!

There was another thread on here where a woman was saying that she was trying to stick to under 1000 calories and lots of people were telling her how bad it was. They obviously don't know about BSD

It does sound awful in theory to only have 800 a day but like you Pink, I've been doing 5:2 on and off for a couple of years. In practice, 800 cals seems loads after 500!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/06/2017 10:47

I think it depends hugely on what those 800 calories are made up of. My dh and parents were horrified when I said I was going to eat 800 calories a day but when I show them my food photos they can never tell its that low. You could easily eat 800 calories and be starving all day, or conversely could be sticking to a plan like slimming world and eating 2000+ each day and not realising why you're not losing weight. I think the fact this is such a nourishing plan makes people accept it more

JigglyTuff · 28/06/2017 10:54

Oh yes absolutely. I do get hungry sometimes but it's manageable. And it's so nice to eat proper food and not shakes!

Flightywoman · 28/06/2017 12:51

Absolutely!

On Monday I ate around 1600 calories but it didn't feel like twice as much food. I wish it had!

My lunches tend to be relatively small and I do sometimes feel a bit hungry but it's manageable and being hungry isn't a bad thing in itself y'know.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 28/06/2017 13:04

bear I laughed at the screaming at the barber's. DS used to do that too and still views it with all the enthusiasm of a trip to the dentist's.The fact there is a pokemon gym near it now has helped. You have my sympathies Grin
I made low-carb cottage pie yesterday and will have leftovers for lunch today. I love the little individual cheeses too - it just makes it easier to calorie count.

Flightywoman · 28/06/2017 18:26

I'd forgotten about individual cheeses! They are FAB, I got some this aft!

Tonight it's veg chilli, which will bring me to about 750 calories. I'm starving! 15 mins to go...

PhyllisWig · 28/06/2017 21:06

I've been having some interesting chat at work (well interesting to me and I'm the second most senior person in the team so the others have to lump it). The team are all lithe and healthy 20 somethings and they can't believe I don't get hungry or that I am avoiding the snack table.

I had a mini victory in that some brought so lovely home grown fruit today but even though it would have been ok, I didn't need it, i wasn't hungry so I left it - unheard of!

In other news DH has totally failed to get the right food shopping despite me clearly signalling telepathically what I needed so I have to have a sneaky itsu for lunch tomorrow. I know, why do I keep him aroundWink

FizzPopping · 28/06/2017 21:42

Day 3 just about done and made hummus for lunch tomorrow to take to work with some veg and got breakfast all prepped so feeling pretty organised. Tempted to have a little check on the scales in the morning to see how I'm doing. Do most of you weigh often or try and stick with once a week?

Flibbertyjibbit · 28/06/2017 22:08

Only 2 more days till I get to the end of week 5.

I am weighing daily Fizz, i find it keeps me motivated and on track. It was hard in week 3&4 as my weight loss stalled for a long time but this is common in lower carb diets. Now on week 5 day 5 and I've already lost more than week 3&4 combined just in the last 5 days!

Well done Phyllis on the NSV. My NSV today is I managed to go to cinema with friend without consuming any food. Took a bottle of water in my handbag to sip. Felt very virtuous while my friend ate a whole share bag of maltesers. I could easily have eaten the whole bag and a 2nd bag previous to starting this so pleased with myself for not going off plan.

JigglyTuff · 28/06/2017 22:43

I had turkey curry for dinner and had it with a whole tub of butternut squash spaghetti because it's low calorie and I'm greedy. And I really wish I hadn't - it's sitting in my tummy like a lead weight and I feel really sick!

JigglyTuff · 28/06/2017 22:46

Oh and that's good to know Flibberty - I've not weighed today but I'd lost a measly 1/2 lb after my 9 lbs on Sunday so I shall try not to get too despondent if that's pretty much it for this week for me (week 4)

Nomoocluck · 28/06/2017 22:52

middle of week 4 today and so far I've lost 4kg. I've not managed to keep to below 50g carbs most days and to be honest am probably eating closer to 1000cals than 800 so I'm pretty pleased with the loss. I'm still breastfeeding toddler DS morning and night, and get the crazy mad hunger after his night feed so despite being in control all day I end up eating an extra 200 cals or so at bedtime. Confused

DH is amazing. Came home from work to find he had made me steak with asparagus and baby corn for dinner. And joined me for a low carb dinner in solidarity Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/06/2017 22:56

Was doing so well but then Winehappened. On a Wednesday night- this is not like us really. Dh had a bad day at work. So calories a bit over today but I haven't resorted to eating crap, and back on it tomorrow

Been frantically tidying house as DP might be travelling home from work sooner than expected. I'm away this weekend so don't want him coming home to a tip.

Updated my bullet journal weight loss tracker this morning, exciting to see I am over the 1 1/2 stone mark, on my way to 2 stone lost.

I'm heading off early tomorrow morning to miss the Friday afternoon traffic, hope you all have a good weekend.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/06/2017 15:49

I'm here tobee!

Reflecting on some things today-
Yesterday evening we had a glass of wine, and subsequently (although unrelated!) we/I had a bad night with ds who has been sleeping pretty well recently. Last night woke at 2.30 and then 5.30, which is when I got up with him.
As a result (or perhaps not) of either or both of these factors, today I have been craving salt. I Don't usually eat breakfast these days but today my stomach was actually grumbling at 9.30 so I had a piece of ham and a piece of cheese. Then I had lunch, but was still craving salty food, so eventually I made a calculated detour and had 2 rashers of bacon with cheese classy bird that I am
Upshot of that is that I won't manage 800 cals today, although I might get under 50g carbs!
I wonder why though, the alcohol or the tiredness or both, makes the cravings literally as soon as I got up and they have lasted all day. I could so easily have cracked and had some serious carbs!!

Have just looked at the calendar and realised why I've been like a relapsed junkie today--- due on tomorrow. On the positive side, that means I Haven't had my usual PM symptoms, probably down to my healthier diet. On the negative, that explains why I have been cupboard twitching all day.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 29/06/2017 18:26

I've been running round getting organised for the family party and for our holiday. I am currently experimenting with different nail polishes as though I have nothing better to do
I was in town this morning and decided I'd have some eggs for brunch. The place I picked was so slow that I ended up having to leave before they brought my food Sad . Hence I fell on the little mini biscuits in the hairdressers which I usually manage to ignore I was so hungry and they tasted so good. Picked up a nice salad on the way home so still on track for carbs and cals.

Flibbertyjibbit · 29/06/2017 18:52

Project end date pushed back so DP now not back till end of next week, having rushed about this morning tidying I am rather unhappy very grumpy

I had similar problem a few days Bear I could not stop thinking about chocolate, managed to stay away from shops to avoid chocolate purchase. I've found a bowl of raspberries with cocoa & hazelnut butter with splash of cream has kept the pmt munchies at bay. I highly recommend the nut butter, it's amazing!
