Oblomov - yep, they are the ones. Delicious. Not had one yet but I'm having a very bad day (stuck in broken down car, really need a wee, eaten nothing yet today and am bloody starving), so tonight might be the night.

ButtonBoo · 23/03/2017 19:28

Evening all! Haven't checked in for a while but things have been going along nicely. Got my next weigh in tomorrow. Am weighing in at Drs every two weeks. This is my second one. Pretty sure I've lost a bit more but know its not going to be the galactic loss of week one (12lbs). Plus, I had my first cave and had a currant bun. Hmm But that to cheer myself up from the hideous mushroom 'risotto' I made tonight. With cauliflower rice. It was god awful.

Bloody brilliant loss Scandi! Well done!

Scandicat · 23/03/2017 19:31

Thanks Button

I tried cauliflower rice once too. Totally grim. Broccoli rice is ok though.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/03/2017 20:03

Yep I hate cauli rice. And any of these cauliflower 'dough' type recipes you sometimes see on low carb sites, there's a pizza base one and a cauliflower cheese bread. Also rank!

A good day for me, I've come in at 1000 cals, but only 7% carbs which is probably why I'm climbing the walls right now! Hopefully another good day tomorrow, but then the weekend will no doubt be a write off with two meals with each of our mothers.

I've been busy busy busy today, and again tomorrow so hopefully that will burn a few calories.

Those salted caramel ice creams look positively dangerous. Seriously. You must have iron will-power.

ButtonBoo · 24/03/2017 06:16

Yes, the mothers day weekend isn't going to be an easy one. Its also my Mums birthday tomorrow so we will be having a variety of lunches, dinners, afternoon teas and chocolates, cakes etc. Stay strong folk...stay strong!! Hmm

MyOtherDogIsAPorsche · 24/03/2017 06:21

Oh yes! 4 weeks in and 12.5 lbs down. Very slow start, followed by very slow week two but better in weeks 3 & 4. Think my decision to concentrate on cutting out carbs and sugar but not count calories too much at the beginning was the reason. Have now reined in my calories and think that's why I am getting better results.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 24/03/2017 09:16

Cauliflower rice is disgusting. A few people had said it was great so I ordered about 6 packets online. Envy I ended up giving them away. It's one of the vilest things I've ever tasted (and generally I like cauliflower!).
10s 6lbs this morning. I think the menu planning is helping. It's not that I'm scheduling it in advance but I now have a list in my notebook of about 30 lunches and mains that are BSD friendly so I can always see something I want to make.
MyOtherDog well done - 12.5 lbs in 4 weeks is a brilliant start!

MyOtherDogIsAPorsche · 24/03/2017 09:29

Love, love, love cauliflower rice. I make my own - just blitz it in the pfood processor and freeze 5/6 portions at a time. Yum yum. 30 meals - that's fantastic, am on about 4/5 here. Luckily I am quite a dull person 😁😁

Scandicat · 25/03/2017 12:33

So, 11 weeks of diet now. I've lost 2 more pounds this week. Total loss is 2 stone, 2.2 pounds since New Year's Day, 1 stone 12 pounds in the 11 weeks on BSD. Also, waist is now 28". That's almost the best thing of all, it means I can buy size 10 instead of having a muffin top on my size 14s. One more week to go then I think I am definitely upping my calories, I think 12 weeks is probably enough.

Oh, and tomorrow is a day off. Mother's Day and a drinks party for a friend. I'm having hot cross buns for breakfast and I don't care how many carbs they have!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 25/03/2017 13:05

Enjoy your hot cross buns Scandi you deserve them Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/03/2017 10:42

Well done Scandi that's amazing!

I'll be really interested to hear how you get on in your maintenance phase, as I have never found a workable method really. Are you going to increase daily calories, or increase weekly calories by allowing a few days 800 and a few higher calorie days? I think you're right that 11 weeks is probably enough, and you must be nearly at target if not already there?

OP posts:
Scandicat · 26/03/2017 17:20

Not at target yet. I'm 9.11 and really want to get to 9 stone. I had quite a lot to lose. But it's great to have made so much progress so quickly.

My plan at the moment is to go up to 1200 calories until I get to goal and probably eat back exercise calories on top of that in a more traditional MFP sense. But keep to low cal - not sure how many grams of carbs though. I think 50g will be tough with more calories.

Justonemorecupoftea · 27/03/2017 12:27

Another 1lb at the end of week 4 so a whole stone gone for me Smile. I'm hoping for a bigger loss soon as I have stuck to 800 calories, low carb and plenty of water pretty well so fingers crossed for next week!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/03/2017 12:28

Got off to a good start today- did the big shop and was reminding myself thoughout about 'the big 5' - it was quite a revelation actually as I realise that I haven't been checking labels as often as I should, and also have been choosing things that look ok but actually aren't. I've bought nothing specifically for me such as nuts or anything 'allowed' that I normally eat too much of.

So far today I've had a couple of boiled eggs, and a chunk of feta for my lunch, plus milk in tea.

I've sort of got dh on side which is nice. He is naturally lean, and is also a natural faster (as in, he will sometimes go ages between meals and will wait for his proper meal rather than grab a quick snack). Considering he doesn't eat nearly as healthily as me, he manages his weight much more effectively, so perhaps that is partly down to his fasting laziness tendencies. But this time he is with me, at least in the cutting down on drinking and rubbish food.

This time last year I was in a very low place- I'd had a horrible Easter pig out and was doing slimming world and really struggling. Baby ds was 6 months old and we were exhausted! I found MM's book by accident and found this thread by accident too, and by whitsun holiday I had lost 2 stone. So I really hope I can do the same this time. I'm over a stone lighter than I was this time last year, so I must remind myself of this!

I've promised myself that I will increase my exercise, even just an evening walk or something, partly because I need some headspace but also because I hope it will help me tone up and feel better.

Hope you all have a great week.

OP posts:
Scandicat · 27/03/2017 21:37

Well done Just - a stone is a great feeling, isn't it. Grin

Bear - its so much easier when you are both doing it. DH and I dieted together and it made a huge difference - when one of us was struggling, the other seemed to be strong. Not sure I'd have managed without him.

Hope everyone else is having a good week.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 28/03/2017 11:25

bear being a stone lighter than this time last year is a great achievement. I think that Spring will help us all too. It makes it much easier to go out for walks when it's light!
My app report from last week showed I averaged 887 calories but 86 g carbs. My carbs are gradually creeping up not helped by pizza and cookies on Saturday night so I'm going to try to get back on top of them this week and hopefully some extra walking too.

MyOtherDogIsAPorsche · 28/03/2017 17:03

Quick question please! I recently read that sugar makes you hungry - which might explain why I am not feeling too hungry at all - is this true?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/03/2017 18:02

I think it's technically insulin that makes you hungry. That was definitely told to me by a diabetes consultant when I had GD.

You eat sugar, your body pumps out insulin to remove it from your blood. If you are insulin resistant, you pump out more than you need because your cells are unresponsive. So you end up with low blood sugar (ironically) and free floating insulin. Insulin in the blood stores glucose as fat, so not only will you be more hungry, but you will be storing more as fat too. Eventually this faulty insulin response knackers your pancreas and you end up T2.

The other side of it is that sugar is addictive' as in it stimulates our reward centre and we get a little boost of dopamine. The brain/body seeks out dopamine hits and if sugar is the provider of yours you will seek out/crave sugar (in the same way a crack addict seeks out their dopamine hit!) whenever you feel low, tired, stressed etc. That craving can be recognised as Hunger.

If you're feeling less hungry it's because 1) you've shrunk your stomach from eating smaller portions; 2) you're eating fat which is satisfying and you're eating nutritious calories, and 3) you've calmed your insulin response so when you do eat carbs, you only produce the right amount of insulin and aren't left with low blood sugars.

It's a good thing! You must be doing something right. I'm on day 2 of 800 calories and I could eat a scabby donkey right now.....!

MyOtherDogIsAPorsche · 28/03/2017 21:23

Thanks for that Bear - really interesting. But you are a regular here - do you take a break after 8 weeks and then come back. Please inspire me with how much you have lost - I love a success story 😃

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/03/2017 21:35

I lost 21lb in the first 8 weeks, then another 7 in maintenance. Since August I haven't really been following it properly and I'd regained about 12 lb when I began round 2. I have only been half heartedly doing round 2 until this week- but now the countdown is on, so I'm up for a proper 8 week stint.

Had a good day today, food wise, although I reached the end of my tether with my darling children at about 4.30 this afternoon, which then was followed by 2 hours of 18month old ds puking everywhere (which prob explains why he's been so grouchy and whiny today!). So I've crept up to 930 calories with a mini pot of Philadelphia and some carrots and olives. I managed 800 yesterday, which is very unusual for me, and I've meal planned for tomorrow up to about 720 cals which leaves me a few left for a boiled egg if I get ravenous. I've managed 2 days without the 'big 5' though so I feel quite pleased on that front.

Is this your first round dog/Porsche ?
How are you finding it (apart from feeling not hungry?)

OP posts:
oigetoffmycheese · 29/03/2017 12:53

What is the big 5 can I ask?? PleaseSmile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/03/2017 13:09

Pasta, rice, potatoes, grains and sugar.
I'm on a Facebook group (have actually unfollowed because some of the women on there are so horrible- not like our lovely MN group!) but that's what they refer to. So instead of counting carbs per se, I'm doing 800 calories but trying to avoid those five things even within my calories. It's surprised me how much I was actually having, usually at least one of those every day. I'm trying to do a full detox from them, although may reintroduce some as MM includes them in the recipes.

I'm on day 3 now and despite being ravenous yesterday, I feel a lot better today.

OP posts:
Scandicat · 29/03/2017 14:11

I'm half way through my 12th week. I've had no rice or pasta at all. I've had the odd bit of potato but only when I've been out for dinner and knew I was deviating. Grains and sugar are harder I think. I've not had bread, but I've had oats in MM recipes. Sugar? I've cut out as much as I could but I've had the odd bit of fruit, the odd glass of wine...

I've really not missed rice or pasta at all. Given that they were my staple foods before, I've found that amazing. But I've come to realise they are fillers - they bulk out meals without really adding much. So now, I have chilli and cheese and sour cream without the rice and I enjoy it just as much.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/03/2017 14:40

I agree Scandi I don't really miss the rice or pasta. Potatoes I do, but I think that's because nothing replaces them adequately IYSWIM? Ie. I can have bolognese on veg no problem, but you can't replace the chips in steak and chips can you? So I find I have to completely change the meal rather than swap the potato for something low carb. Last time I really craved a proper jacket potato with cheese, by the end of the 8 weeks it was the only thing I wanted!

Cutting out grains isn't too hard but I Do have to remind myself that I can't have bread or crackers. They had been creeping in, so cutting that out again leaves me with a bit of a void, and aren't easily substituted.

I find it just makes me think before I eat, or buy. If it's not in the house I can't eat it. However last time I did well by counting carbs and including small amounts of those (except the sugar) within the parameters. I did go 8 full weeks with not a grain of sugar last time, and cut out most fruit. I do wonder if it left me a bit depleted though, and I had two terrible bouts of laryngitis and pleurisy last summer, which in part I think was due to not getting sufficient vitamins after cutting out all fruit.
