This was my tea tonight, lamb stir fry- it was delicious!

Regarding the carbs/salad dilemma- what are you using to track? I have salad every day, plus dairy carbs, veg, plus frozen raspberries and come in under 50g most days. Maybe it's the apple? Are they high carb? The key thing is I guess to lose the 'free veg' mentality and have only one or two veg types at each meal- if you notice in the book he only serves one type of veg as a side to most recipes. It's been the hardest habit to break for me as an old slimming world dieter, where its a sort of pile it all on your plate scenario!

That is very true Bear! I had lettuce and cucumber at lunch, the apple did it - 100% carbs!

But I pulled it back for the evening and am bang on carbs. 873 cals so slightly over there but I'm not agonising too much about that!

Flightywoman · 02/05/2017 19:09

I'm using old faithful MFP to track. Haven't used it for ages, but it's got all my old recipes and entries still on my account which is great and is also encouraging me to be more adventurous again.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/05/2017 19:23

Flighty apples are recommended in the book though? This is probably why MM doesn't suggest to count carbs- it's probably, although it's 'high carb', more slowly digested so therefore a lower glycemic load- after all that's what this plan is really about, to reduce the peaks and troughs in blood sugar and insulin. Maybe it is high fibre therefore less detrimental than say, banana which is a high sugar, high glycemic index/load fruit.

OP posts:
Flightywoman · 02/05/2017 23:20

Thank you! I'd missed the not counting carbs bit - I'm going to read again - though I have to set a nominal level in MFP. I s'pose as long as I'm not eating white processed carbs I should be ok?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/05/2017 04:23

Yes, I'd suggest no bread (flour), pasta, rice, sugar, potatoes. MM allows certain grains, such as quinoa and oats but only in very small doses. The suggested menus give an idea of how frequently you should have them, for example in a four week menu plan, he uses oats once or twice, not every day. I think that's the hardest part about 'going it alone', it's easy to see a food used and think it's ok but in reality it's not OK every day.
The 50g carb allowance is a sort of evolution of the programme, and from the 5:2 diet (I think) - I've been in these threads since thread 2 and it was talked about then, but it's not in the book. I think it stems from the original 5:2 where it was 2 days fasting and 5 days non-fasting- the carb allowance was used to keep non fasting days in check. On this plan, in theory if you avoid all the foods you shouldn't have and stick to 800 cals, then you'll naturally hit around 40-60g carbs. It's useful if there are situations where you can't avoid carbs to have a limit, but I find that it allows me to cheat!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 03/05/2017 07:36

I first read about the carbs limit on the forum on the BSD website. I think it's just another way to keep track if you're struggling to remember not to eat flour, bread, pasta, rice, sugar and potatoes especially when sugar and flour are so ubiquitous. For me, counting carbs is the difference between losing and maintaining.

Flightywoman · 03/05/2017 08:22

Thank you both - that's made it much clearer for me. I am avoiding all the stuff e says to so fingers crossed!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/05/2017 17:18

Seriously, someone have a stern word with me.

Do you ever have one of those days when before your eyes are even open you know it's not going to end well? I've been grouchy all day, grazing all day, eventually took ds out for a 90 minute walk because I just had to get out of the house. Cue this evening, dd tidied her room, brought down all her rubbish and about 3 Easter eggs she didn't want. I've just stood in the kitchen, making a freaking healthy low carb dinner and eaten an entire egg.

I am so peed off with myself right now!

I'm on the naughty step with you bear Blush. I made kids a quick fish finger sandwich tea before taking them out to things and I was good and had a bowl of lovely homemade soup. Before I knew it I had gorged a slice of sticky white bread with butter to wipe bowl out then a ff sanger as well. I'm a bit cross with myself Angry

dotandstripe · 03/05/2017 21:36

Ha, I've been naughty too and eaten a brownie today! Not massively over on calories though so hopefully not too much damage done... Have been struggling with cravings this week!

Flightywoman · 03/05/2017 22:31

I've stayed off the bad stuff but I am over calories!

I made some seriously awesome falafel and hummus though, they were sooooo good! And I'm not hungry now so they did their job and have kept me full for the last 4.5 hours.

outnumbered38 · 04/05/2017 06:35

Can anyone recommend a cookbook (other than the BSD one). I've fallen into a bit of a rut and could do with some inspiration. Thanks

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/05/2017 07:17

Outnumbered I do a lot of recipes from Jamie Oliver's three hour 30 mins meals book and also his superfood book, although totally disregard the calorie counts because they are way out. I also steal some of his sauce ideas from recipes and use them in lower carb things, omit noodles and rice etc- they take a bit of juggling around but are a good base. His butternut squash Laska curry is the best curry I have ever had.

After my little foray into the murky carb underworld yesterday, I am now 3lbs heavier this morning. I can guarantee that while I did go a bit mad, I certainly didn't eat 10,500 calories of chocolate so that's not 'real' gain, is just water. I am going to try very hard today to keep on track, drink lots of water and green tea and generally be not eating crap, and hopefully it will disappear just as quickly.

My friend uses the Carbs And Cals series, there's a Very Low Calories one that's around £6-£7 on Amazon.

I really love Isa Chandra Moscowitz's vegan cooking - I'm not vegan! - her Appetite for Reduction is all calorie counted and includes nutritional details.

And I was thinking Hugh F-W's Veg would be useful too for the recipes that aren't reliant on white-carbs.

And I s'pose the other resource would be Harcombe diet as that eliminates carbs but it isn't calorie counting and doesn't allow pulses to start with.

Flightywoman · 04/05/2017 07:20

I've now lost 7.5lbs. Since Monday.

stitchglitched · 04/05/2017 07:37

Flighty that's amazing! I'd lost 3lb as of yesterday morning but don't currently have scales in the house so have to rely on popping into Boots every few days.

I've woken up quite hungry, going to try the yoghurt mixture from the book for breakfast today. Does anyone else have a headache on this diet? My head is throbbing, need to drink more maybe.

Flightywoman · 04/05/2017 08:18

I'm a bit stunned! The only other time I've lost like this was when I was deeply unhappy and couldn't eat anything at all!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/05/2017 08:26

A little bit of salt can help with those headaches

Hi everyone, I'd like to join in. I'm on day 3 of the BSD. I'm unsure of my current weight- I suspect I'm between 14.5 and 15 stone. Size 16-18. My reason for starting the diet is my blood pressure. I'm on medication as it is very high. Hoping to get some order to my eating and lose enough weight to get me off the medication. I'm looking at buying a weighing scales to track my weight loss. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good one?

Oblomov17 · 04/05/2017 11:30

Well, I am on a roll!! Not the bread kind though! I have been very good for 3 days, one day eating on 688 calories, although I ate quite a lot of food and felt full. The other days 800 exactly. Another 1lb down.

But like Outnumbered, I now need to search for more recipes. Because Dh, who is a T2 and quite overweight wants to join me. And he likes all the bad stuff, rice, curry , potatoes, Jacket potato and beans etc.
He eats a lot of my meals: cauliflower curry, courgette and meatballs, over the last year, but he hates a lot of the stuff I like: like Roasted peppers and feta, just isn't going to cut it, for him.

goes off to look for recipes, suitable for carb loving, pasty/steak slices, covered in shit pastry etc/loving Dh's!!

Scandicat · 04/05/2017 13:37

Hello everyone. Well done Stitch and Flighty. The beginning of the diet was almost miraculous for me too.

I'm still wading through the murky world of phase 2/maintenance/slow loss - or whatever this is. Almost TOTM so I was a bit heavier this week, but it seems to be coming off now. I'm kind of stuck in a cycle of good week days and bad weekends and I'm maintaining I guess, or possibly losing ever so slowly. But I haven't gained, so that's good. And yesterday, when I was feeling heavy and a bit crap, lots of people said nice things about my shape. So that's something to smile about.

alteredimage · 04/05/2017 13:48

Help me...

I fell of the wagon as well. Perhaps because it is so cold. I took my student DS out to supper on Tuesday, was showing a visitor round London today and toast and a brownie this morning.

I probably have not eaten more than my daily calorie allowance, but I feel tired and sluggish and just want to pig out further. Hopefully I can get back in control before it starts showing on the scales.
