Hi yumyum, you're always welcome to call in!
I'm not sure what this gut diet will be so I'd be really interested to know once you've read it. I'm guessing it will be a sort of 'feeding the gut bacteria for optimum health/weightloss' sort of affair- hopefully it doesn't stray too far from the MM med style principles because I always liked to believe naively perhaps that MM genuinely believed in this w.o.e and its health benefits rather than just focussing on it to make a quick buck. If his new book is polar opposite advice then it sort of makes me question previous advice.

Quick weigh in this morning-,12.1 still. I seem to be sticking around that at the moment, although tbh I didn't manage any days at 800 last week what with various child related dramas and my own lack of willpower! Positive thinking though- I've stuck to the principles throughout, no bread, no cereals etc and no sugar except my one or three Easter egg binge!

Usual Sunday menu planning and shopping list today, ready for tomorrow. I'm sticking with my morning shakes and evening meal strategy and hopefully will get a few days at 800 in - I need to get back into the 11s after my very brief foray there two weeks ago which didn't last.

Bear, you are ahead of me. I'm 12st6lbs. I had a surprising dip to 12st5lbs a couple of weeks ago, but bounced back a little. Two lbs less than a week ago. I am being quite strict, but am reconciled to the fact it probably won't go any faster than that. I am in my slim jeans though!

ListObsessed · 30/04/2017 12:06

Hi. New to this and haven't read the full thread. What is the app called that some of you have mentioned?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/04/2017 12:40

Welcome list, do you mean a calorie tracker app? I use the delightfully named 'fat secret' although many use MFP. It's just a way of keeping track of calories and the ratios of fat/carbs/proteins.

Thank you. Will have a look.

AuntieMay · 30/04/2017 13:06

Hi,
Can I join too please? I'm on day 2 of week 1 and am finding this thread really useful. I think I'm similar interns of weight to some of you and I need to lose about 2 1/2 st😳
Starting weight yesterday was 12st 8 lb but I have a holiday in 4 weeks which will be smack bang in the middle of my first 8 weeks but there is always something to stop me sorting out my weight so I'm cracking on now!
( day 2 enthusiasm) not sure how I'll feel in a few days...

yumyumpoppycat · 30/04/2017 13:20

Welcome everyone starting out!

Will defo update Newaverage, wonder if it will be less about weightloss than BSD. I think it will still be med style but with an Asian twist with fermented veg.

dotandstripe · 01/05/2017 08:13

Welcome newbies!

Start of Week 2 here - did a weigh in this morning and lost 2.5kg or 5lbs 8oz in Week 1 which is a lot more than any other diet I've tried. Yay! Hoping to reach my goal weight in May and fit back into my favourite summer clothes by June. Grin

ListObsessed · 01/05/2017 09:10

Is porridge allowed? Haven't started properly yet as still waiting for books to arrive. Just had porridge, SS milk, blueberries, cinnamon and maple syrup.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/05/2017 10:18

List it is, technically, but in small quantities and not every day. It's in the category of 'a taste, not the whole meal' along with other grains. I find it throws my body all out of whack and makes me very carb- hungry so I avoid it, but it is featured in the book as a recipe. Reduce the glycemic load by having with a high fat item, such as avocado, or full fat milk etc.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/05/2017 12:37

List just re-read your post- the porridge might be ok but the maple syrup definitely isn't. When your book comes you'll have a better idea but basically anything sweet, or sweet tasting, is out. It can be hard at first but you will very rapidly retrain your sweet tooth. When I did my first proper 8 weeks I was entirely sugar free and got so tuned in to it that i could smell sugar in other people's tea!

I know this stuff, I just don't do it all the time as my sweet tooth has had a major resurgence since Easter.

Hi there can I join? I've started this diet today!

I've managed to lose a stone in the last couple of months by cutting out junk, calorie counting etc but I've really got stuck the past couple of weeks. I feel like I need to see quick results and follow a plan. I'm getting the book tomorrow but have read recipes etc online so I could start on a monday. Just had an aubergine based lunch and amazed at how tasty it was and how full I feel.

Can I ask what are the best times to eat meals? I'm currently 12 st, would love to lose 3 stone but even 2.5 would get me to a healthy bmi. Thanks.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/05/2017 17:20

Welcome stitch, there's no set times as such, just whatever suits you. I tend to skip breakfast these days, have lunch at 12 and dinner at 6 (weekdays at least). Weekends always turn to weasel poo rat shit for me diet wise so whilst I aim for brunch and dinner it doesn't always happen like that

Tonight we're having roast pork (was supposed to be pulled but I forgot to put it in on time so it isn't falling apart!) and while the boys have chips and corn and slaw, I'm having salad. I've been out in the garden all day so I'm hungry. From tomorrow I'm having four strict 800 calorie days, menu planned to within an inch and ore counted so I cannot stray. Must also remember to drink water like its going out of fashion! - really must have all ducks in a row for this plan to have maximum results, and seeing as it's now less that 4 weeks til holiday and I've wasted 2 weeks teetering around the same Weight I need to bring out the big guns now!

One thing that always comes up on the FB groups for BSD is snacking. Someone will ask what to have for snacks and then lots will pile on and say no snacking...... But I do tend to snack, perhaps that's where i'm going wrong? What does everyone else do? Snack or not?

OP posts:
Flightywoman · 01/05/2017 18:28

I've just started today too!

I've hit under 800 cals, slightly over on carbs - 68g.

It's going to be long slog for me I think - 7 stone to lose - but I can't stay like this forever!

dotandstripe · 01/05/2017 18:36

thenewaveragebear Snacking goes against the fasting diets principles because it raises insulin levels. It's much better to have a few hours period of 'fasting' between meals. I did 5:2 in the past and it seems everyone who has managed to successfully maintain their weight loss long term has given up on snacking. (I didn't, which is why I'm now here!)

Oblomov17 · 01/05/2017 18:46

I had 4 good days of under 800. Then I went away for 4 days of the bank holiday. Oh dear. Although I didn't eat THAT many carbs. A few g&t's though.
Like Bear, I will try and be strict from tomorrow.

stitchglitched · 01/05/2017 18:54

I've had a lunch and dinner today, about 600 calories. I don't usually eat breakfast but I guess I'll have to start otherwise I'm going to be so hungry! Going to plan a week's worth of meals and my shopping list later.

cardoon · 01/05/2017 19:03

Would coffee with milk be considered as a snack?

APlaceOnTheCouch · 01/05/2017 19:23

I snack bear and always have done on BSD. iirc there are snack suggestions in the book. My go-to snacks are: almonds; mange tout; sugar snap peas; houmous; dark chocolate; sugar-free jelly.
Back from our weekend away. I ate lots but also walked for miles so I'm hoping when I get on the scales in the morning, I should actually be down. I had tuna frittata for lunch and am having cottage pie for dinner. DH and DS are having pizza to celebrate the last night of the holiday weekend but I am staying strong.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/05/2017 19:36

I do snack, probably on the reasoning that if I can get to lunchtime on a few almonds, that's better than having a whole meal; and you're right place, there are snack options in the book so it's quite confusing. I do get the benefit though of having longer gaps between meals, so perhaps I need to think in terms of 'very very small meal' rather than snack? Ie. What I'm calling a snack (my current favourite is a slice of ham and slice of cheese (lidl do Edam slices that are 80 cals each) rolled up together!) is actually in place of a meal so perhaps I should call it that and eat it off a plate not just shove it in my mouth standing up!

The one thing this plan doesn't accommodate is differentiation - by that I mean the calorie allowance is the same for man/woman, tall/short, 20st or 10st, active or sedentary, when in reality our calorie requirements are different and even our own requirements vary on a daily basis.
It is definitely my extra morsels of snacks that push me over the calorie allowance so I'm going to really really try this week to not have them. Can't promise anything....! Some days are just so looooong on 800 measly calories!

OP posts:
Oblomov17 · 02/05/2017 08:09

Well the good news is that I'm 3lbs down!! But, by god that took effort. But that only takes me back to where I was last month. So, no significant loss. And quite a long way off 10 stone.
Why is this so hard?

yumyumpoppycat · 02/05/2017 15:29

Oblomov it is suckey how hard it is - why cant weight just come off how its supposed to then stay off!

Cardoon milk in coffee isnt really a snack unless you have loads of milk. I would sometimes have a latte as a mini meal with 2 other proper meals, but sort of feel that isn't the healthiest option!

I graze, one good thing is that this type of diet forces me to have an eating window usually about 10 hours, and when I can stick to that and have a fast it hopefully counteracts the grazing during that time

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/05/2017 15:40

No, I wouldn't count milk in coffee or tea as a snack either.

The grazing does make a difference though, to me at least, in terms of insulin secretion and insulin resistance. When I think back to the times when I was most successful on this plan, I wasn't snacking/grazing. I was also managing to stick to 800-1000 more consistently. Today I've had coffee only before 12, 10 olives and a slice of cheese at 12, my berry/peanut butter/almond milk shake at 2 and then dinner will be stir fried lamb with butternut squash noodles. This is the time I would normally be starving, and raiding the fridge, so instead I'm going upstairs to fold laundry and tidy bedrooms.

OP posts:
stitchglitched · 02/05/2017 16:34

Wow I've been at 12st 1 for about 2 weeks, unable to get below 12 no matter what, weighed myself earlier and I'm 11st 13 after a day and a half on this diet! I'm not hungry at all and still have 500 calories left to use today. I've done a big shop, fridge full of food I've never bought before, so exciting.

Flightywoman · 02/05/2017 17:16

I am truly starving! But getting used to smaller portions is important for me because I've been massively over-eating.

I'm already nearly at all my carbs just on lettuce and an apple. I don't see how I can get below 50g if I have salad...

I just splashed 60 calories on a tsp of peanut butter, but it was that or fall into the bread bin so I chose the lower carbs.

I also bought a nice glass to have at work to encourage me to drink more water. And consequently don't have a headache, yay!
