Shiny new thread for the BSD'ers. Best thing you can do is first read the MM bsd book do you get a full grasp of what the rules are but in a nutshell:
800 calories a day
No bread/pasta/potatoes/rice
No processed food, no alcohol
As close to no sugar you can get
Full fat, no low fat
Protein to keep you full
2-3 litres of water a day
10,000 steps a day (work your way up)
HIIT if you can 2-3 times a week

Thanks thenew I might stick to the diet drinks for now then. I am not too bad with sugar its carbs and big portions that are my downfall. Sorry I should gave explained better when I said 500 cals protein I meant protein based meal like bean chilli, chickpea curry or lentil soup. I do add a bit of cheese or yogurt. Today I've skipped breakfast, had a banana with a bit of full fat yogurt and some seeds for lunch. Im planning a salad with fish for tea.

Hello thatswhat - welcome on board. MM was on the radio again today, repeating advice about the recent research about diet drinks, they seem to do more damage than good & indicators are, that they actually can increase weight. They also don't retrain the sweet-cravings that many people experience; I use fizzy water with squeezes of lime/lemon juice (small quantities) or have fizzy water with slices of fruit in it. This is when I am being good & not feeding my wine habit.....

Caffeine isn't restricted/advised against, from memory, but milk is, even skimmed, because of lactose, a carbohydrate so you need to take this into account. Herbal teas are good, but check out for the ones with colourants & sweeteners, I opened a herbal tea bag once & all those little coloured balls are 'nature-identical' flavourings etc so I am careful which brands I buy now.

Hi oblomov - you & me both, holiday did do damage & I was so happy that I could still fit into my new cozzie & shorts by the end of it, I was very disciplined with everything except the wine........ It was so reasonable & so nice.........

Asides from guzzling vats of the stuff, I otherwise managed to stick to 1 treat a day, eg 1 X ice cream, or 1/2 plate of pasta, or 1/2 pizza, small risotto etc The one exception was a piece of bread with brekkie every day, unnecessary calories but I needed it to mop up the night before's vino.....

Did manage steps most days, despite searing heat as dragged DH around various sites of archeological interest, or walking around stunning towns, swam lots, hair looks like straw matting.

Accompanying DH on business trip to Paris on Thurs & we are staying on over the weekend, this will not help my bloated tummy, but will be back on track from next Monday, have just 2 days of virtue to look forward to this week, salmon in fridge, with salad for dinner tonight & tomorrow, bacon & tomatoes for brunch - just 2 meals today thro' Wed - won't do me any harm & no booze. System will go into shock, but liver needs a bit of respite. A big bit....Wink

H3l3naGraham · 27/06/2016 15:21

Bananas are out, along with most fruit, use berries instead & the occasional sharp apple or pear, in the book, it is explained that a lot of fruit is little more than attractively packaged sugar.... I use blueberries for brekkie, along with strawberries & raspberries when they are on offer, looking forward to the summer berry season as they are more reasonable then! But am looking forward to summer anyway, who stole it, this weather is awful....? One minute I am in Italy & it was a scorching 35 degrees & I am now back here & it's 19.....Sad Would happily settle for mid 20's.....and no rain.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/06/2016 15:43

Welcome home h3l3na! Did they not tell you? We had our summer while you were away, that's it til next year!!
Gosh bananas. I haven't had a banana in probably 12 + weeks. I just buy bags of frozen berries, it prevents wastage, picking/snacking and also keeps the little paws of my brood off my only fruit! Win win win!
I am quite impressed with the blueberry smoothie. It is a little 'bitty' from the flax seeds and almonds but has kept me satisfied all day so far. I'm going to make it my breakfast each day this week.

H3l3naGraham · 27/06/2016 16:15

Hello bear - I haven't tried the smoothy, might well give it a go, my system needs a rest after the wine & fish. Thank you for explaining that I've missed summer, I needed an excuse to slip over to the central heating controls..... Am so tempted, but will go for a jumper instead and socks, toes are froze.

Clg199 · 27/06/2016 16:33

Just a quick post to say thanks for the encouragement. I've just started the second week today, and I'm 6 pounds down! Even without the numbers, I feel and look so much better already, and I'm amazed at how the type of food you eat is just as important as the quantity.

I'm following the meal plan in the book - organisation is what has failed me so many times in the past so this gives me a list to stick to and takes all the brain power out of it. The recipes have, on the whole, been amazing and I've hardly felt hungry at all. I did have a bad day yesterday with not enough steps and lots of lazing around, but today I feel back on it. My plan is to do another 4 weeks before I go on holiday, and then see where I am. For once, being on a diet isn't a pain!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 27/06/2016 16:45

Welcome back h3l3na (albeit for only a fleeting visit before you resume your travels!) It sounds as though you did amazingly well on your holiday. I am Envy that you are off to Paris.

bear the smoothie sounds interesting. Excuse my ignorance but do the flax seeds add taste or are they just for the texture? I don't think I've ever bought them.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/06/2016 17:02

Not sure if I bought the right things to be honest, they look like little sesame seeds. The remaining small amount left in the jug waiting to go in the dishwasher have sort of swelled up so perhaps that's why it keeps you full? I toyed with getting ground flax seeds, that would have undoubtedly made it less bitty, as would a nutribullet or similar high powered blender I 'd imagine. I used a flavoured green tea which gave it a nice flavour too.

H3l3naGraham · 27/06/2016 17:17

Hello couch - I have put on weight, but will wait till after Paris to see just how bad it is. I am a coward. The ground/milled flax seeds are more easily digestible in the gut, so therefore 'better' for you, I use them on my yoghurt for brekkie, along with milled chia seed. But if you zap it in a fast bullet, you'll get the same effect

Appear to be strikes, riots & football 'supporters' in Paris, so am pleased we aren't staying in the centre, will plan on out-of-town trips for the weekend. I don't do the standard French breakfast of croissant, jam & pain-au-chocolat (barf, disgusting things) which gets me out of one meal a day, will make more room for lunch.......Wink

BeyondTellingEveryoneRealFacts · 27/06/2016 17:25

I'm at my parents' for dinner, having chicken cooked dinner minus potatoes and gravy so should be okay :)

Not2bObvious · 27/06/2016 17:45

Welcome back H3l, sounds like you managed v well while away. I'm going to model my behaviour on yours for my holiday...esp the vino😉 Having a chicken meal I defrosted on Saturday (was cooked & then frozen) it smells & tastes fine, if I get a dodgy tum that'll be a bonus (only joking...kinda) Day has gone good so far but dinner will include a few carbs. The wonderful lidl halved the price of their Italian range for 4 days after Ireland bet them so I have a freezer full of stuff. Going to sample a sliver of pizza & a chicken/mozzarella ball thing, plus a wedge of cauliflower burger I picked up. Nearly 15,000 steps today, half of that from my morning run. Still need to glut another few glasses of water to hit my quota. Not too worried about tomorrow's weigh in, I think being good yesterday & today will cut the weekend gain a bit. Well I hope it will!

Kitchen closed for the day. 800 cals, I'm pretty pleased with my first day back on it! Smoothie for breakfast, skipped lunch, and then had turkey breast steak and cannellini bean mash (mashed with sautéed onion, chopped sundried tomatoes and coriander- was lovely!) and broccoli. I've got that lovely light BSD feeling, hopefully sign of good days ahead!

Not2bObvious · 27/06/2016 18:44

Super bear, I'm closing my kitchen at 1000 cals which as y'all know I count as a success! Day 2 of 9 before holidays done. 7 days where I need to keep it together dammit. Of course I've company for dinner on Thursday which always leads to vino, I wish I could find it in me to stay on the dry but it's nearly impossible😩 I won't drink Friday as I'm babysitting and I need my wits about me. And of course I'm babysitting in a house with ridonkulous amounts of goodies...it's going to be v tough but I'll wear my tightest clothes, that may help. When I used to 5:2 I wore clothes that fit me v snugly - was like a hair shirt of sorts, check Ms Picky Knickers in check. I have a pair of size 10 trousers that need a couple of pounds to close properly (and 7lb's off to wear out without obv camel toe, boak!) I'll pop a long top over them and then suffer my way through the evening sipping water & then have an early night. Plan made, just need to execute successfully😁

Breadandwine · 27/06/2016 20:03

Hi guys

About flaxseeds - I see them mentioned a lot, but nothing about grinding them fresh. Whole they just slip through the body - and they lose effectiveness pretty quick after being ground. I grind mine fresh every morning.

I'm a vegan, so this is mainly where I get my omega 3. You need to shop around for them - I've seen them priced at over £12/per kilo Shock, down to £1.25/500g in my local HFS! Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/06/2016 20:13

That's interesting bread . So if I use them whole but put them in my smoothie, they then get broken up, does that increase their effectiveness? Better than buying 'ready ground' ones? I have to admit I was a bit non-plussed about them. I'd never used them before - but I'm doing the recipes in the book to the letter this week so that's why I've used them. I definitely felt full for a long time after drinking the smoothie so if that's their purpose then they seemed to work!

H3l3naGraham · 27/06/2016 20:23

Hi not2b - if you replicate my vino-fest, we'll possibly end up in a special unit which treats people who drink their own body weight in wine every night (and lunchtime) .......

yes, the old tight-trouser trick, I know that so well, gives me dreadful indigestion though & I fart like a camel once they are off (TMI, sorry) - but I can still get into the pre-holiday cut-offs, result. Mind you I washed them today so it might be a different story tomorrow. We shall see.....nothing much in the fridge, which solves the post-holiday carb 'hunger' , salmon salad was yummy, asides from (more) water, that's my lot for today.

Interesting re milling flax-seeds freshly, I did wonder about them & chia seeds to be honest, lots of things are better fresh, coffee grinder has died though, I put some nuts in it a while back & it blew up. Boy was that messy. My SIRT blender isn't up to milling them so I'll have to think of another trick as SIRT sort of put me off smoothies for a while but the one in the book does sound worth a try.

ThatsWotSheSaid · 27/06/2016 20:50

thank you H313na. I think I heard that on radio 4 today. So I'm sitting with a jug of water with a spring of mint. :)
I'm confused about the dairy thing. I haven't read the book but the website said you can use full fat milk. Is milk restricted? Can I eat cheese?

APlaceOnTheCouch · 27/06/2016 21:19

Lots of interesting posts about flax seeds - thanks! I think I will have a look at the smoothie recipe next week I don't want to risk it with my dodgy tummy at the moment
I've been a bit cautious about eating today after my sickly weekend so cals and carbs are low. But I am not ruling out raiding the kitchen later if I feel hungry.

Not2bObvious · 28/06/2016 06:17

I stopped using flaxseed when I saw the calories count, how much do you guys use and was numbers are you getting for that amount? I thought it was about it 60 cals for 10gr iirc, but apart from that I found they didn't help at all with my movements which is why I added them. This was when I did 5:2, 60 cals is a good chunk of change out of 500 cals. So I switched to psyllium husk for bsd, when I remember to take them that it!
Wi this morning shows a 2.4lb gain from the weekend, so now 11.3.4 - that's ok for me. Be gone by Friday (oh pls be gone by friday) taking a little more with it. A hard day ahead, kids finish school & dinner out has been promised. Got to be strong

Elvish · 28/06/2016 07:38

Hi everyone, I've been off MN for a while but still trying to KOKO with BSD.

Weighed in this morning at 10.11.4, I need to have a good week to get me more firmly into the 10s and so I don't slip back to the 11s every weekend!

Glad to see everyone is still here, have a great week!

Not2bObvious · 28/06/2016 07:47

Nice to "see" you Elvish, you're looking trim😉 I know what you mean about getting firmly into that next stone, took me an aged to get out of 12's and into the 11's. Now I've the same problem with the 11's! Old stubborn weight in my case that loves me dearly & wants to stay with me forever feck off I yell

OP posts:
APlaceOnTheCouch · 28/06/2016 09:14

Not2b ah I didn't realise flax seeds were supposed to have that effect. I will definitely be avoiding them this week then.
Hey Elvish it's weird isn't it that changing into a new stone band seems the hardest to cement?

APlaceOnTheCouch · 28/06/2016 11:44

I've lost 1.6lbs since Friday but since it's mainly bug related I expect to put it back on. Pah!

Not2bObvious · 28/06/2016 11:52

I wouldn't necessarily agree place, if you are a lot less over those days and your system, ahem, cleared out then it's a bit like doing a hardcore low cal diet. Make sure you drink lots of water & stick to bsd principles and you'll likely keep that lose.
My chicken was obviously OK as haven't had any adverse effects bizarrely disappointed
