Shiny new thread for the BSD'ers. Best thing you can do is first read the MM bsd book do you get a full grasp of what the rules are but in a nutshell:
800 calories a day
No bread/pasta/potatoes/rice
No processed food, no alcohol
As close to no sugar you can get
Full fat, no low fat
Protein to keep you full
2-3 litres of water a day
10,000 steps a day (work your way up)
HIIT if you can 2-3 times a week

I'm loving this diet. I'm not obsessing about food because I know I will be getting at least two proper meals. I snack on nuts and olives and very dark chocolate but only straight after a meal and just before bed
. I have wine but only on ONE day a week. I then tell myself I can drink as much as I like ( I am slightly addictied).
It works perfectly. A stone gone in 4 weeks. Hoping for another one for Christmas.

I've put on 2 lbs. I'm going to be back into the next stone above, in a minute, rather than dropping down into the stone below.
I just can't seem to manage it. Maybe I need to go on a strict 8 week'er?

It is low carb rather than no carb. So 800 cals per day and 50g carbs.

Is the focus more on restricting calories (sticking to

Christmas dinner is quite BSD friendly anyway - lots of protein (turkey) and veg. It's the alcohol and the dessert that might be an issue Grin
Paw I've had lots of birthdays, holidays, weekends away since I started BSD. Some of them I've kept to BSD and some of them I haven't. I've come to the conclusion that there are always going to be points where I eat and drink more. The good thing about BSD is that I know I can go back to it after those excesses and it will work.

Yes I will def take a break at christmas! Hopefully I wont start christmas in November like I usually do ;) I have had a few breaks as been on this since Jan and so long as the break is not too long and reasonably sensible the lbs come off pretty quickly. I have realised my main problem was eating toast, treats etc by myself while watching netflix late in the evening when family was in bed so I have stopped that and try not to do that even if on holiday mode. At the mo I am doing 2 - 3 days under 1000; 1 or 2 high cal/tdee days; and a couple of somewhere in the middle days - weight is sloooowly continuing to go down.

Btw you dont have to cut carbs too much just keep portions small and wholefoody - lentils, buckwheat, quinoa oats, fruit and veg are all in the recipe book just small portions - the recipe book is great for inspiration.

Thanks yumyum and Couch - it just seems really daunting: 8 weeks of no carbs and no alcohol!!! Confused (I've got teenaged children, how will I cope?! not entirely in jest )

What will you do over Christmas? Do you all take a break?

If I try it, it will have to be after half term as I find it's impossible to stick to anything with the kids at home.

Paw 5:2 didn't work for me but BSD has. I think it's the combination of cutting back on carbs and the consistency of sticking to the same low level of calories for the 8 weeks.

Report
yumyumpoppycat · 14/10/2016 20:10

PS some of us found 800 a day easier to stick to than 1200 calorie plans because there is so little wriggle room for carby snacks. You may also find you get in the zone, eat better overall and find it easier than the up and down of 5:2.

Paw I lost very little on 5:2 when I tried it for 8 months but this has really worked for me. I think you have to commit to at least 2 weeks of being strict and following the plan - 800-1000 and eating healthy food - no alcohol, then reasses ( this is what MM reccomends). If you do the full 8 week thing which quite a few of us did it is effective but also very difficult if you have a social life. One advantage for you is that if you do manage the 8 weeks you stand a chance of having lost all the weight you need to lose because it works out at less than 2lbs a week for you to lose. Then you could 5:2 to maintain.

Ok, I'm dipping my toe in this thread because I've been doing 5:2 for almost a year and have lost.... almost nothing! On the plus side, I guess I've stopped gaining weight, but I'm becoming discouraged - I'm only doing it for vanity, want to lose up to a stone to get back to my pre-DC weight.

But this BSD sounds seriously hard core. 5:2 works for me because I have close to zero will power and I love food, but it's only twice a week. Is it very hard top stick to no carbs and 800 cals for 8 weeks?!?! It sounds impossible from where I'm sat with my G&T

Any words of dis/encouragement for a dieting newbie?

Hi Incy Wincey

A good tip I picked up on here is that if you are not following the meal plan in the book you can workout the calories of your meals in advance on the my fitness pal app - that way you can come up with balanced meals for the cals and carbs. For some reason I always logged after eating rather than advance so this was a light bulb for me Blush

Welcome incy. There are lots of people at different stages on here as new posters join all the time. It's great for keeping motivated. Good luck for your first few days just make sure you drink enough Flowers Now, ignore everything I'm just about to post as I've been doing this since April so am a bit lax with it sometimes. Grin

I ended up making yesterday one of my higher cals and carbs days code for I ate everything in sight I'm dreading the Oct week because I find BSD much more difficult when I'm out of my usual routine. That's been part of the problem this week because DH has concussion so I'm stuck working from home/keeping an eye on him and it's just too easy to pick at food.
On the plus side, there is no cake left to snack on. On the downside, that's because I ate it all Blush

Can I join.
I have been reading up on this and my book arrived today.
Feeling slightly apprehensive at calorie controlled and fasting but I am so tired these days and I just need to do something

Ruby maybe your sister could follow the BSD diet 2 days a week on rest days then the 1400 pt plan the rest of the week? Well done btw your results this week are amazing.

Talking of results I have worked out my body fat has decreased from 37% to 23% doing this ...really happy with that! slightly miffed my biggest % loss is from my not that large anyway chest ...boo.

That's such an interesting tip thenewaverage. I've got a very sensitive sense of smell and can smell bad breath a mile off so I'm paranoid about mine and always chewing gum.

Bizarrely I can actually smell when my husband has been eating too many carbohydrates. His breath gets a certain quality to it, as totally bonkers as that sounds.

I've just finished 1 week and lost 6 pounds in total. My goal is 15 - 20 lbs loss total so it's a good dent.

Day 3 and 4 were definitely the worst. I've only cheated twice - Monday night with hot chips and wine after a 9.5 hr pitch meeting that we've been working on for MONTHS, and last night I had a nice dinner out with my husband with bread, wine, dessert etc as he is about to head into six weeks of non-stop travel. Even so I only put on 0.5 lb from dinner.

I'm trying to encourage my sister with PCOS to try it; she has a PT that has her on a 1400 calorie "healthy carbs and lean protein" diet and she's getting nowhere. Not there yet as she thinks it's too drastic but I'd rather do this than have to follow a diet to the letter for months on end!

Very strange about not knowing the breath smells - I heard newaverag'e tip too but I heard to lick the back of the hand - you will wear yourself out with all this licking!

Welcome back Laska - have a lovely holiday. 10lbs is not so bad, I had a 7lb gain over summer, hopefully it will come off quickly after your hol once you get back to it.

High cal day still to do the recky on MFP, I felt vaguely guilty tbh, overdid it a little with snacks when I got home from work as feeling a bit stressed. This morning I was down to a new low weight so will be chuffed if I can get a little bit lower each week with some high and low days.

Thank's very much Thenewaverage. It is an embarrassing question to ask - and to answer! I read somewhere that a low-carbohydrate eater's breath can smell a lot of acetone, which is normally such a strong smell, so it's odd it is difficult to know for oneself.

Weird trick but if you lick the inside of your wrist and let it dry then sniff it you can tell if your breath smells.
Probably the weirdest post I've ever added to a thread.....

Report
KindDogsTail · 11/10/2016 23:40

I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to tell if one's breath smells, without asking someone? I read that a low carb diet can cause that, but that you won't know yourself.

Yours sounds delicious too - yum! Only problem with mine is that the lamb was very calorific so not really left with many calories for the rest of the day. Herbal tea it is then Envy need to keep reminding myself today is a fast day and tomorrow I will go higher cals!
