I've started the 800 calorie Michael Mosley blood sugar diet today. I'm T2 diabetic, menopausal and need a sharp shock to do something about the way I eat.

Weight has crept up post surgeries over the past few years, I have low carbed before then caved in. I'm going to post what I eat and my progress on here as an incentive to stick to this for 8 weeks. Anyone else welcome to do the same.

Breakfast half a lavash bread, smear of tomato purée, lots of mushrooms and sprinkle of grated cheese. Very filling. 189 cal

Lunch. Little gem lettuce leaves with bacon, avocado, cucumber. 234 cal

Dinner chicken breast, sour cream with fajita spices, rocket, cucumber, avocado, celery. 337 cal

Drinking loads of water, a bit hungry.

It could have been a bad day nutritionally, I missed breakfast & lunch, ending up with a coffee & pain au raisin while I was out. Bad planning! Still I think I managed to retrieve things later finishing up on 1000 calories, although a bit high on the carb front.
Dinner was salmon done with lemon & basil, spinach, red pepper mange tout and mushrooms. Pudding of yoghurt with an apricot, nectarine & raspberries.
Another pound down today so that's 6 since last Monday!

GraceGildee · 14/06/2016 09:10

officerhinrika well done on your loss! That's brilliant!
I made my Greek yogurt thing for breakfast, a few grapes and apple today as no blueberries left, big spoonful of flaxseed and a few nuts. Lovely. No photo as my phone ran out of storage!

A good day at 800 yesterday, and I'm back down to my lowest, got another day's menu all planned. My older ds is at nursery today so it's just me and the baby at home. If I get chance I'm going to batch cook some meals as I find it easier to stay on track when there's a supply all calorie counted in the freezer. Have been for a walk already to get some steps in! Have a good day everyone!

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 14/06/2016 12:38

I'm having a pain au raisin craving now Officer Grin Great loss!

I haven't batch cooked anything yet, it's probably a good idea but I haven't been eating anything that would freeze (other than chopped herbs which I'm getting through like you don't want to know).

I just had tofu, tuna, and chick peas for a high protein lunch, along with a green salad. Pms has well and truly kicked in now and I go from feeling nauseated to craving toast. I made DS an oat and linseed loaf well I didn't, the breadmachine did last night and I don't know how I survived the smell of baking bread; I think I just created my own version of Dante's circles of hell.

Today is day 7 and I'm not feeling like I've lost any weight even though I know I have. Do you think that's because of impending AF?

GraceGildee · 14/06/2016 13:14

Lunch. I did extra roasted veg and chicken yesterday so today I had it on half a lavash bread with cheese, baked for ten minutes. Really nice.

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 14/06/2016 18:28

The sodium level is very high actually. It's the bloody tofu!

officerhinrika · 14/06/2016 21:28

That's very impressive Cunk! I'm also impressed that you resisted bread maker bread. DS has just made a post training pizza and I'm avoiding the kitchen, quietly cursing him :)
I've got a bit more inspired with recipie ideas now, thanks Grace for reminding me about crispy chickpeas, had some for lunch, yummy. I've just completed my online shop and it's funny that I've spent extra, but on healthy vegetable type goodies - NOT crisps!
I think I'm going to hit 800 almost exactly today and have really enjoyed my meals, chickpeas done with lemon zest ,mint & salad then a huge prawn salad tonight.

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 14/06/2016 21:52

I love chickpeas, I think I may be properly addicted to hummus. MM didn't warn us about that did he?!

How I would love a pizza... . Stay strong Officer, you can do this. Excellent day for you too then. I have a horrible taste in my mouth that I've had a few times since starting this diet and all the water in the world won't take it away. I clean my teeth/ swig some mouthwash but it comes back a little while later.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/06/2016 22:14

I sometimes make a 'pizza' using those thin turkey breast steaks, top it with tom puree, ham, mozzarella, whatever you like, then bake in the oven. The texture of the turkey base is really satisfying. Also nice with very strong cheddar, sundried tomatoes, olives etc like a bruscetta. You can also make one using minced meat and herbs sort of squashed flat into a base, and then topped, but watch out for calories because they soon add up!
Tonight I had bolognese and salad, lunch was an omlette with parma ham and Stilton, no breakfast. Few odd titbits during the day. Came in at 950 cals, which is good for me, although after I get weighed tomorrow I am going to aim for a proper 800 cals a day week. I can just never seem to get the last 100 cals off, although I have found a consistent 900-1000 has worked well for me, rather than 800 all week and tdee at weekends, as I struggle to get back on track.

yumyumpoppycat · 14/06/2016 22:39

newaverage what you describe is more or less what I did, some days were 800 some 1000 or a bit over but averaging out at about 900 a day.

Like the sound of turkey pizzas, going to try that!

GraceGildee · 14/06/2016 23:16

Well done Cunk hello all. Hectic evening so just sharing my dinner now. Sort of stir fry with peppers, mushrooms, cabbage, cauliflower, and a tuna steak I found in the freezer. But the tuna steak tasted off so I just had the stir fry with peanut butter. And raspberries with yoghurt. Just under 800 calories today. Determined to reverse my diabetes! Really missing chocolate.

Ps - if you fancy pizza try the lavash bread I've linked to previously. 100 cals in a large one and low carb. They make great pizza bases.

Morning all!

I keep meaning to order that lavash Grace, I even have the page left open on my laptop to remind me.

Great news this morning; week one finished and I've lost 6lbs. I know it isn't as much as lots of people have lost but I'm over the moon Smile

It's great motivation to carry on.

Oblomov16 · 15/06/2016 11:44

You pictures make my mouth water.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/06/2016 14:10

Hi everyone, I was really hoping to have an 800 cals day today, but again I think I'm going to come in at about 850. Went for lunch with a friend and had a mini breakfast (egg, 2 rashers of bacon, mushrooms) and have made a smoked fish gratin for dinner. Ever so simple, smoked fish, 4 oz cheese, 8oz cream, a leek, 4 tomatoes. Put the fish, tomato and leek in a casserole dish, sprinkle over the cheese and pour the cream over. Bake for 25mins. I'm hoping that when its done it won't have shrunk too much, and then I can make 5 portions instead of 4 (thus pulling my calories back down under 800!) I'll probably have it with some asparagus spears or salad. I am really going to aim for a strict week this week, I've been creeping over up to 1000 ish, and feel like I need a focussed week!

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 15/06/2016 18:08

Grace, how are your blood sugar levels? Do you see your GP regularly whilst doing this diet?

thenew Fingers crossed for a good week for you, you can do it!

I've been doing some googling... I know, I think I'm in ketosis hence the strange taste in my mouth. It does mean I'm burning the stubborn fat though so that's good

Lunch today (I don't have breakfast) was tuna with green veg, some lentils, green salad and mint hummus, very nice!
Dinner was a 2 egg omelette with grated cheese and some more green veg.
I'll have a teaspoon of peanut butter later with my evening coffee to up the cals but I don't feel hungry.

How are you all doing with steps per day? I don't have a fitbit and my phone only counts steps when I'm holding it or it's in my bag but I don't know how to up the steps to 10,000. I seem to be averaging 7000 a day and I haven't had the energy to do any exercise other than some gentle yoga. I'm still waiting for the 'high' I've been promised will happen when quitting sugar!!!

GraceGildee · 15/06/2016 18:29

Cunk well done! 6lb is brilliant! Oblomov thank you so much :) thenew your gratin sounds lush.
Back to work today and it was very busy, I'm a cm so I don't get much chance to make food so I think I need to start making a packed lunch as well as my breakfast the night before. My blood sugar is getting lower but still too high in the morning. But I was terrible before this, pretending I wasn't diabetic and eating crap. I manage around 10000 steps on weekdays as I don't drive and walk the kids a lot.
Food! Usual yogurt thingy for breakfast. Lunch I was completely unprepared for so I got some prawns from tesco and added sour cream, lettuce, cucumber and paprika for a sort of prawn cocktail.
Dinner was a bag of mushroom stir fry with a piece of flaked fish and a bit of mozzarella. I think most of my meals involve mushrooms and cheese. 800 calories today.

Thanks Grace, your food looks amazing again today! It must be so tough to have T2, I think that without taking action now I'd be in danger in the not so distant future. I don't really understand how it works, I thought I had an idea but I'm shocked that your BS levels are higher in the mornings, I thought it would've been in the evenings! Clueless again.

GraceGildee · 15/06/2016 19:18

Apparently for diabetics our bodies release a lot of hormones during the night which can cause what they call the glucose dump. I feel so much better doing this diet but i have a long way to go. This week I have really wanted chocolate, not dark and bitter but dairy milk! I'm drinking pints of water today as it's hot here and humid.

OP posts:
TheCunkOfPhilomena · 16/06/2016 09:25

Wow, I really didn't know that! Thanks Grace.

I completely empathise with the cravings, today is the worst day I've had for wanting something very carby and calorific.

I'm jealous of it being hot where you are, I'm in SE England and although it's sunny, it definitely isn't warm and we have a forecast of heavy showers later. I need summer!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/06/2016 09:42

I think the whole T2 diabetes scenario is characterised by a long period of 'impaired glucose function' and for sometimes months or years before any kind of diagnosis you can have a poor ability to control your glucose function and how you metabolise sugars. I had gestational diabetes three times, plus I have PCOS. I find that certain foods just do not 'suit me', such as bran cereals for example, certain natural yoghurt brands, too much fruit, when oddly, a bar of chocolate doesn't have the same effect. I found it was mid morning when my sugars would spike up high, and after using insulin would then crash to the floor; in the end as it was only GD and therefore temporary, the drs just left me to it really. I think the issue for weight loss with regards to this glucose dump phenomenon, is that most people who are pre diabetic, and T2, do actually produce insulin. It just isn't taken up by the cells effectively. So they produce far more than they actually use. The impact is that the pancreas gets 'tired', the cells get resistant, and the person gets fat, perpetuating a vicious cycle. If there's insulin in your bloodstream you are in fat storage mode not fat burning mode. This diet, hopefully, balances out the extreme highs and lows and calms the insulin response, so hopefully those 'glucose dumps' will become less severe and less frequent.

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 16/06/2016 12:31

Thanks newaverage! Very enlightening!

This was today's lunch, halloumi, puy lentils, broccoli, salad and hummus. It was delicious!

Hello all, Christ it's busy being back at work. Also realising how many of the kids snacks I used to finish. Shock

Today, usual breakfast then I had the same as yesterday for lunch. Prawns, soured cream, lettuce, cucumber and tons of paprika.

Dinner tonight has turned out to be very low calorie. Half a lavash bread then mushrooms, onions and spinach stir fried in tandoori spice. And more sour cream. Less than 200 calories so I may have apple slices to dip in peanut butter later. Love peanut butter.
