I've started the 800 calorie Michael Mosley blood sugar diet today. I'm T2 diabetic, menopausal and need a sharp shock to do something about the way I eat.

Weight has crept up post surgeries over the past few years, I have low carbed before then caved in. I'm going to post what I eat and my progress on here as an incentive to stick to this for 8 weeks. Anyone else welcome to do the same.

Breakfast half a lavash bread, smear of tomato purée, lots of mushrooms and sprinkle of grated cheese. Very filling. 189 cal

Lunch. Little gem lettuce leaves with bacon, avocado, cucumber. 234 cal

Dinner chicken breast, sour cream with fajita spices, rocket, cucumber, avocado, celery. 337 cal

Drinking loads of water, a bit hungry.

I know what you mean, I think we need a maintenance support thread!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/06/2016 19:27

My father has been sugar free now for three years, and I mean 100% no sugar, not even a piece of grandchild's birthday cake, but he doesn't calorie count. He's lost a lot, probably 3 stone, and for the last year his weight has maintained within a couple of pounds either side of target. I think that if you keep up the sugar free and limit the carbs, its very very hard to eat too much day after day. We notice it doing this because we're recording it. Today I've not calorie counted, but have been sugar free. I've just worked out my totals and I've come in at 1100 and 18g carbs....which is very low. The appetite just naturally curbs, its very hard to eat 500 calories of cheese for example, (but I could demolish 100g dairy milk/500 cals while waiting for the kettle to boil). My dad is lucky because he 100% trusts himself and the plan, he knows that provided he doesn't have sugar, it will work.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/06/2016 19:36

Sorry,pressed send too early!
So with regards to maintenance, and doing the mainetance plan, it has to be something you believe will work, and that you can trust. If you're going to allow oocasional sugary treats, then one needs a strategy for how to compensate/undo the damage. Its inevitable, at least for me, that there will be some degree of cake in my life on maintenance. But on a daily basis, I envisage a sugar free, low carb, potato/rice/pasta/bread free existence, because that's the only way I trust myself for it to work. I think Philomena that is probably how best to address your dilemma. How will it work for you on a daily basis and how you can incorporate the nutrition you need and the results you want. This is very interesting because I think a lot of us, definitely me, are concerned about maintaining long term.

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 22/06/2016 23:22

Yes, whilst it feels a little premature for me to be thinking about maintenance I realise that it took me 6 weeks to prepare to do the BSD so I should be addressing it now!

I'm really impressed with your father! I have a friend who's about 2 years sugar free and she said that when she made something with dates for sweetness she felt a bit shaky from the sugar Shock. I don't think I can say, hand on heart, that I'll be sugar free forever but I need to plan so I know what's right for me. It might be that I only have wholemeal toast at the weekend and do the 5:2. I need to think!

GraceGildee · 23/06/2016 08:12

Fell asleep before I logged my tea last night. As of this morning I'm down another stone band, exciting to see a new number. Cunk all debate is fine, there are variations of this diet for most people. thenew seriously impressed with your dad!

After my peaches yesterday I kept my dinner a bit lower. The peaches were sweet and I wanted to eat everything in the fridge after i'd had them. I need to eat more fat I think. I just had chicken salad for tea.

Hi all, i've just started this too :)
My grandad on mums side has been t2 for years and my dad is prediabetic, so i'm getting in early Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/06/2016 12:18

Hah, yes he's done very well. But he also has aspergers, which means he does things properly all the time and cannot veer from the course. He also, occasionally, lacks the social graces not to tell people that their food is full of poison (sugar) so it's not all good. God love 'im.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/06/2016 12:19

Oh and well done grace it's brilliant to be in new numbers!

GraceGildee · 23/06/2016 14:02

Oh thenew I sympathise, both my kids have aspergers! X

Welcome Beyond! Do you want to lose much or just reduce sugar?

BeyondTellingEveryoneRealFacts · 23/06/2016 14:31

I have a bit to lose - rough early aim of 30lbs would be nice
(I started this week at 222lbs)

Big understanding of asd from me too, we have a house full! Flowers

GraceGildee · 23/06/2016 19:34

Better day today. Delicious yogurt thing for breakfast. As I was working all day I made a chicken salad in a box last night and had that for lunch. Dairylea cheese strip mid afternoon. Prawn stir fry for tea with extra cabbage and green beans. And a bit of cheese. I find if I have cheese it stops me nibbling later. I have a friend over tomorrow evening so I'm going to do cold things like salami, houmous, cheese and salad.

Evening everyone! Hi Beyond, great news to hear you've started. I had a few rough days at the beginning but it does get better so if you have a headache, don't worry. MM recommends making sure you've had enough to drink and maybe up your salt intake as your body uses more water when you're doing this.

Good to hear about the weight loss Grace, well done. I wish I could eat yoghurt, it seems like a great option. I'm also a cheese nibbler, it's either that or a bit of peanut butter in the evenings with my coffee. I hope you have a lovely time tomorrow night, does your friend know about the BSD?

Yet again I had to force myself to eat dinner Confused. I had a mushroom omelette and it was fine but not hungry. Rocket, watercress, puy lentils, basil tofu, and hummus for lunch. I'm having an early night tonight so I can get up early to watch the news.

GraceGildee · 24/06/2016 17:57

Found this in Tesco, will report back when I've tried it.

Morning all! Too tired to post yesterday after long busy day. Usual Greek yogurt, blueberries, apple, nuts etc for breakfast. Out on a trip with the mindees so took a salad of edamame beans, beetroot, avocado, cheese and other bits in a box, ate that and finished their blueberries off.

Friend came for supper and I made a little buffet. Chorizo, salami, prosciutto, Boursin cheese, watercress, mozzarella, mushroom antipasti. Some olive bread and crispy flatbread things. I had a couple of slices of crusty olive bread with butter and it was lush. Didn't log my calories as I planned to go over, the bread was a lovely treat. We had some strawberries too.

I feel fine about going over, I find this diet isn't hard to get back on the next day. Today I'm going to roast some chicken breasts and loads of veg to put in plastic boxes. I love cold roast veg in salads or on lavash pizzas.

Progress update, this is week four for me and according to MFP I have lost 1 stone 2.4lbs. Jeans are too big, blood sugar is coming down. I'm really pleased.

Hello there Grace! Ooh, sounds like you had a lovely feast! I really miss Boursin, it's heaven sent that stuff! Fantastic news about the weight loss, well done you.

I had a really bright idea to do a couple of poached eggs with my asparagus for lunch, I am utterly crap at poaching eggs and today was no exception. Had to get what I could from the saucepan with my slotted spoon Blush

I haven't lost anymore weight but I've heard that it can get a bit stuck in the 3rd week so I'm carrying on and hoping things will change soon. Looking at the positive in that I haven't put any on.

yumyumpoppycat · 25/06/2016 19:01

cunk if you cut a square of clingilm crack the egg on it then pull up the clingfilm and twist it you can dip that in the saucepan of water to cook, just repeat for as many eggs as will fit in the pan, each in their little clingfilm sack.

Amazing grace well done!!

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 25/06/2016 20:43

Thanks yumyum, I'll give it a go next time. Lentils, herbs, lemon juice, and hummus for dinner this evening, not too bad!

GraceGildee · 25/06/2016 23:05

Salad with avocado, beetroot, Boursin and leaves for lunch. Dinner was roast chicken breast with houmous, sweet potato, mushroom, red pepper, broccoli and cauliflower. Around 800 today. If I manage to reverse my diabetes I am going to be so so thrilled.

Hello all,
Last week was very frustrating, 2lbs on then 1lb off by yesterday. Food over the weekend was slightly derailed by a party, 800 calories does not accommodate ciderGrin but otherwise not too bad. Today I had some hot smoked salmon with mixed leaves and a dab of mayo for dinner - bloody gorgeous! Tomorrow I'm trying some smoked trout done with orange & beetroot, it looks lovely. Hoping for better this with the weightloss this week.
I rather wish you were cooking for me as well grace, your stuff looks delicious!

what does your doctor say?

i ask because my dad is diabetic and has been warned repeatedly about sudden diet changes / crash diets and how they could impact his health.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/06/2016 07:41

user that depends on many factors such as if he is T1 or T2, how his sugars are controlled eg with metformin or insulin or diet, how generally healthy he is and if he takes other medicines well such as betablockers, and how well advised his doctor is and how supportive they are. The best thing for him to do is to read the book and to Speak to his gp or diabetes nurse. If he fits the criteria but his doctor doesn't support him, then he can attempt to find a gp who does support low carb methods to reverse T2. Lots of GPS are prescribing outdated diet advice and using drugs to control sugars which Michael Mosley and others believe is not effective.

GraceGildee · 28/06/2016 07:42

My doctor was intrigued, she wants to see if I can reverse the diabetes. My health is much improved, blood sugar down and I have more energy.

I wish I was cooking for you too, officer,I really love to cook and would happily make everyone low carb meals on wheels! Perhaps I'll win the lottery one day and open a low carb restaurant Grin
