Hello I'm a newbie here although a veteran dieter unfortunately. I've just come back from a week away in which I consumed my own body weight in chocolate, ice cream, beer etc so I know I'm going to be gnawing my own arm off in a few hours ( if not sooner.... Tummy already starting to rumble). I'm hoping that announcing my intention here will stop me backing out when the going gets tough. I've read the MM book and have got my meals sorted for today so no excuses. My main concern is the need for calorie counting which I find a ball ache.... Weighing all those veggies for dinner is a bit labour intensive. I'm also concerned about the long weight between lunch and dinner. With a long commute (2 hours) I don't usually get home til after 7 and then after child related chores dinner is usually not til 9. That's a long time! i think I need a good snack to keep me going and thought maybe the hummus or a boiled egg. What do you all do? I don't think a couple of almonds is going to cut it. Any suggestions will be gratefully received. Ps I'm aiming to lose 3 stone.

Morning all, I am 2.5lbs down on day three, are my scales playing up? I suppose I have gone from around 2000 cal or more to 800 but blimey. I have a lot to lose. spirited could you have your larger (400cal) meal at lunchtime to keep you going?

Not2bObvious · 06/06/2016 11:16

It is disheartening hearing others having great success but the thing about this is its healthy & can be adapted in the longterm to keep you from ever regaining. I know plenty of longterm ww'ers/sw'ers who seem to have a lifetime membership! I can have a lifetime membership of bsd & it's not costing me anything. And I won't be keeping the sugar free/low fat brigade wealthy at the cost of my health.
I have 2 children and I either eat the same as them minus potatoes or pasta or I have chicken breasts in spices, 100gr portions of steak in the freezer I use for bsd days
spirited if you don't want to weight food, then you can go by portion size, half a plate for green veg, palm of hand for meat portion size, matchbox size for cheese. You could try that. Keeping hydrated helps greatly with hunger. Slice of mature cheddar & 10 almonds or slow eaten slowly is a good snack and around 150 calls. I know it's a pain weighing food but I'd rather spend time agonising over that scales than the other one 😉 Sometimes we don't have to like what we do, we just have to do it

KoKo - I just plough on after a weekend of transgressions, eat very lean for 2 days, drink loads of water, do the 800, no nuts or nibbles of cheese. Starting week 1 again would drive me nuts, you are setting the bar at a tough place, I am not doing 8 weeks, I have way more weight to lose than an 8 week blitz would sort out, so if I slip, I just keep on ( no pun intended) ......

Having watched many mates do Lighterlife, WW and the like I decided against them, because they don't retrain eating habits, have you seen the amount of sugar in some WW products, eek.... I knew I needed to look at something that would give me a new way of life & after a while the lack of carbs becomes much less of an issue. Like not2b we are more 5:2 with a bit of relaxation at weekends, eg a slice (just the 1) of good toast on Sats & Suns, wine at weekends (this always goes to pot) and perhaps a sweet potato, but we get back on it on Mondays with no variances.

I can understand cooking for children but can you not eat the same stuff minus the spuds, pasta or whatever, whack up the veggies & you'll have a full plate but less carbs? Do a major cook-in & freeze tonnes down, gets it out of the way then you know you always have something on-plan to hand.

Be aware of Catastrophic Thinking, MM was talking about it on the radio the other day - essentially if you are 'bad' over food something tells you to keep on being bad, but your 'perfectionism' is almost setting you up to fail; we all err, we are all human, you will slip, good grief when I go off on one, do I slip, but don't let it get you into a vicious circle, you can break it, honest!!

Hello spirited - I don't calorie count, I use the recipes & we pile (DH on it too) our plates high with approved veg every night. I use small portions of chicken breast, salmon, cod whatever & weigh the cheese. Yep, a hard-boiled egg or a small Babybel will not trash your diet & if it helps you stay on course then go for it, nuts don't work for everyone. I am able to eat in a tight window, perhaps you could eat breakfast late, might keep the Woolf from the door a bit longer? If you like a drink, have wine (red preferably) instead of beer, top it with soda or some water, lasts longer, it's a nice treat but not every day!

SpiritedLondon · 06/06/2016 12:21

Thanks for your comments. Holding off lunch as long as possible but doing ok so far ( in the 6 hours I've been awakeWink ) I hear you about SW.... When I went a couple of years ago I did lose weight but they pushed a lot of convenience foods at you ( those bars etc) and the bloody Muller lights. They would wave packets of Uncle Bens microwave rice and proclaim how you could eat two packets for lunch but would not mention veggies or any protein to make it a more balanced meal. They also seemed to continually downplay the role of exercise - denying that it would contribute in any way towards weight loss. ( this was at the group meetings). I don't consider their philosophy to be correct and am determined to find a more sustainable way to achieve my weight loss. I see the 8 weeks as the Kickstarter and hope that I can get through that to the more sustainable 5:2 but when I've dropped some pounds. I really like MM and appreciate the way his theories are explained and supported with research. I suppose I trust him which looks slightly lame when I see it written down.

H3l3naGraham · 06/06/2016 13:29

Hey Spirited - it's not lame, MM is up on my roll-call of good guys, I think the programmes he fronts, his honesty & the research are all sound, positive & refreshing!

From being very exercise conscious when I was young, I have now slipped into sloth, aided & abetted by osteo-arthritis, I am not acute, but have had 2 new hips & my feet are swollen & painful most days which all serves as a perfect excuse to sit on my fat bum so I bought some Skechers & now walk 2 miles 4 times a week, need to make it 7 but getting there. DH bought me a bike last year & I am now using it, especially as the weather is better (allegedly, still very chilly here in E Kent) it all helps!

I also realise that this is a long-term process, took a while to get this lardy, so it's not going to vanish overnight, we will be Med in the future, but for now we are BSDers for the long term!

Have not read thread. To catch up. Will do that tonight.
Back from my hols and a few lb's up. Need to get rid of those smart'ish!!
I have my diabetic appointment in a few weeks and I want my hba1c to be the best it has ever been. I began this in January, so whilst I have eaten a few more carbs - chocolate/crisps/wine, recently, I want my diabetic consultant to be impressed.

H3l3naGraham · 06/06/2016 14:35

Hello oblamov hope that you had lovely hols, wishing you well with your appt, am sure that after working so hard on the diet since January, your overall results will be where you want them to be & that your nurse will be impressed at your efforts. I have been dieting since January too, it's starting to become a way of life!

LolBeansandSalad · 06/06/2016 16:31

Hey everyone, don't think I've posted on this one so far, but I'm
basically a new girl.

Started the BSD on Thursday last week so I'm five days in and still hanging on.

I've at least two stone to lose but if I can get a stone off in the 8 weeks I'll be happy (she lied...I want to lose three...)

Grin

Not peeked at the scales yet, will wait until Weds eek

H3l3naGraham · 06/06/2016 17:25

I've lost 2st beans - just shy of it, 1.5lbs to go, then another 1.5st to go......about 4 weeks in I noticed I'd lost a chin, then all of a sudden I had to buy a complete new set of jeans/trousers etc, then I dropped a bra size, HURRAH!! Then finally some people noticed (haven't announced diet). I plateau a lot but have hung on in there, DH & I do it more 5:2, but are food-carb-careful on the 2, I'd have done it all by now if I didn't have a fairly busy social life, but reckon I have to live too!!

Good luck!!

LolBeansandSalad · 06/06/2016 17:47

Thanks H3l Smile

Social life has been shelved for at least four weeks. I am determined to get a loss under my belt!!

mootime · 06/06/2016 17:49

Hi all,
Will try and go back and catch up with everyone. This thread is moving quickly.
Today going ok for first day back in. Had a kale salad for lunch which was supposing key filling but I'm ravenous now. May have some left over butternut squash to keep me going through my tennis lesson then it's an omelette before bed.
Must try harder with water though.

Well done ladies, trying to shut my kitchen too, but DH has vanished, literally... So unlikely to make & eat dins in 20 mins but will all be done & dusted by 7.30, when I find him!!

mootime · 06/06/2016 20:27

Annoyingly my tennis lesson got cancelled, but I went for my first session of c25k with a friend instead and feel so much better for it.
Although I've pulled something in my calf.
Dh making me a cauliflower tortilla for supper which I love. It's like a Spanish omelette but low carb!

Also went to doctors this morning and she's changed my pill (apparently I'm on the worst one for weight gain/ increased appetite). She's also sent me for loads of blood tests as I have a family history (mother and grandmother) of thyroid problems. So we will see, it probably is still just the chocolate...

Keep, well done on a successful day 1. I would never be able to have just two tiny new potatoes, it always snowballs.

H3 I hope you find you DH.

I have a vision of you in a palace wandering around missing each other! Grin

H3l3naGraham · 06/06/2016 21:34

Hello moo - he was sitting in the car, checking out the SatNav to see if it went as far as Italy....... Wink Pleased your Doc took everything seriously, that is very positive & a very good result, fingers crossed for you.

Palace...... ROTFL, Victorian house in E Kent...... Grin

yumyumpoppycat · 06/06/2016 23:59

Lookingforhope I think we have all had at least one weird week where we don't lose, it could be a whole list of things and annoyingly seems to be pretty normal for this diet, but if you carry on weight should start to come off again.

Sounds incredibly glamerous H3 I have always wanted a tiara Grin

I am pretty amazed as I am not counting cals at mo either but I have been losing 'weekend weight' by just being sensible - I think bsd has really done me some good, or reset something a bit like sputnik has found.

Spirited what about skipping breakfast and having a brunchey meal (200-300 cals) round 10.00 a late as possible substantial lunch (400cals) as your main meal and just a small quick meal like scrambled eggs at 7 before doing children routine (under 200) and forget about traditional dinner? You could do proper dinners just at the weekend until you have finished the 8 weeks then you can have a rethink if you like to eat a proper evening meal with your dp?

Elvish · 07/06/2016 07:05

Just checking in for the latest instalment of H3's glamorous life Wink

Didn't weigh in over the weekend as the damage would have been horrible, fully intended to be back on plan yesterday but the cafe in the park only had sandwiches. I was under on cals but over on carbs for the day.

Have ordered phylum (probably not the right spelling!) capsules in the home that more "regularity" will help...

H3l3naGraham · 07/06/2016 09:15

Laughing lots, would hardly call our life glamorous, but it has it's moments..... Have been living with Roll & Stroll on the stairs for 2 years whilst DH finds time to board-in the loft, then there's the wardrobe doors on the landing, which since a disastrous paint-job (blasted chalk paint grrr) have never been rehung....Wink

Good day yesterday have lost weekend bloat, youghurt, berries & seed-dust for brekkie, 'ploughman's' for lunch & what I hope is cheat's moussaka for dinner, I really need to take that excellent advice posted here weeks ago & use an eyeliner crayon to mark up my food in the freezer. Managed a walk yesterday, another one scheduled for today in-between panicking won't get everything done before Thursday, manic few days & flying off on Hols on Monday!

H3l3naGraham · 07/06/2016 11:41

Think it's cheat's cassoulet, now it's thawed a bit, it was one or the other, or it might have been my chicken-pepper dish, spare eye-crayon now in kitchen.......

The wind's finally dropped here, lovely day, sunshine, odd little cloud in the sky, stupid people went for walk along coast last night, could have drowned, lifeboats & helicopter were out, quite exciting for E Kent. Going for walk once DH & I have finally run through our final to-do list, he's a nightmare for packing, any of you seen Jack Nicholson in As Good as it Gets.... The scene with the stuff on the bed.......?

Not2bObvious · 07/06/2016 12:31

Well Elvish if you were as bad as me over the weekend, you did well to avoid the scales. I could have grown an extra limb for what I've gained. I know it's 80% bloat but crikey I nearly died. Haven't eaten yet, very much sticking to 800 for the next 3 days in the desperate hope I'll get shot of those extra pounds. Walked & ran this morning but dh is away for next 3 days while curtails my walking as I can't leave kids to do my morning walk. I'll have to dust off the treadmill, boring

Cheats Cassouket sounds lovely H3. Makes me hungry thinking about it. Stumped for lunch ideas today... Not sure what to have and I have no time to go and find something particularly. It may have to be a cup of teaConfused

NOt2b sounds like you are back on the case so I'm sure those lbs will disappear.
I braved the scales this morning and the damage is worse than I'd hoped. But I'm back on it and will get there.
