Well done Not2b on managing to turn it around over the course of a few days.

H3l3na I am imagining an Audrey Hepburn/Roman Holiday look for your Italy trip Grin

Needed I think most people aim for 800 cals and under 50g of carbs. I wouldn't try for no carbs at all. They're not evil - everything in moderation this is my mantra and my DS chants it whenever anyone calls a food bad or healthy

APlaceOnTheCouch · 06/05/2016 11:22

oops, forgot to add, I missed my WI this morning. I was too tired after staying up late watching the election so had a mad dash to get organised and out to school. I'll just need to wait until tomorrow instead.

H3l3naGraham · 06/05/2016 11:32

Hello namechange - you will lose weight on 50g of carbs a day, there are complex carbs found naturally in so many foods & it's these that you will eat, not processed, simple ones. Some carbs will help keep you on track.

Lunch idea: egg beaten into a tub of cottage cheese (full fat please!) with lots of chopped chives, & spring onion if you have it. Whack it into the oven for 15 mins, hey presto - a 'soufflé' ! I do this with chopped spinach too, or chopped tomatoes. Less than 6 mins to beat up & about 15 to cook (ovens vary!)

Did you look at the kale & lentil 'polpette' recipe I posted late last week, that is veggie too.

The beetroot falafel in the book are delish ( I like falafel) - cooked beetroot marinaded in balsamic vinegar, on a bed of lambs lettuce with crumbled goats cheese & pine-nuts on top is also tasty - I also make lots of soup.

Would a can of black beans, with lightly fried onion & garlic work for you? Add stock, a pinch of chilli & lots of coriander, heated up then whizzed up in a blender, topped with some Greek Yoghurt & chopped coriander leaves - takes 10 mins from start to finish

H3l3naGraham · 06/05/2016 11:34

Hello couch - Audrey Hepburn's much bigger, less delicate sister perhaps...... The one that ate all the pies........

Wink
APlaceOnTheCouch · 06/05/2016 12:09

Ah, but the healthy, veg and protein filled, low carb pies Wink

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/05/2016 13:44

For a veggie lunch, I had a leek chopped and sauted in a bit of olive oil, a splash of cream and a teaspoon of wholegrain mustard. I also did it bulked out with spinach and shredded cabbage and served with chicken breasts. It was very tasty.
The sun is shining here, glorious day, and just had my lunch of green salad and a splash of dressing with some smoked salmon. For breakfast I had what is fast becoming my staple: an omelette made with a tbsp bran in it, had sundried tomato and Basil in it today, and dinner tonight is scallops, courgette spaghetti and some sort of chilli/garlic/cream sauce. I'm going to be very strict today as I have a date with dh tomorrow (my first night out since having ds 7 months ago starting this plan.

H3l3naGraham · 06/05/2016 18:00

Have a lovely date night Newbear - with the sun shining on you all day, I am sure you will have a chill night together & you can afford a glass or 2, as long as you don't scoff the bread roll 1st!!! Smile

Breadandwine · 07/05/2016 01:17

About carbs - before I began 5:2 I was eating the recommended portion size for rice/pasta, 75g. I gradually reduced this - with the help of a smaller plate - down to 50g and found that to be quite adequate.

I've now reduced this even further, down to 37.5g (my scales measure in 25g increments), so I'm now eating half the carbs I used to.

And it's brown rice, or wholemeal pasta, of course! Smile

Elvish · 07/05/2016 08:55

I got distracted with rib boobs and forgot to say thank you to H3, I think I will keep aiming to stay on 800 a day and if I have some Wineat weekends I am still going to be cutting a lot of cals vs. my previous woe.

Lost another lb today so my bmi is now 28 and I'm just overweight rather than obese. But another 1st 7 to loose to get down to a bmi of 20. So I'm over half way there in 10 weeks, another 10 from here is the middle of July. I could be at my goal by the first week of the school holidays!

Right, off to do some exercise to speed it up Grin

Elvish · 07/05/2016 08:57

My problem with pasta Bread is that 75g was a small portion for me, I could happily eat 100g. I'm really not missing it though with corgetti as a replacement.

Elvish · 07/05/2016 09:05

Is this any help Needed vegetarian keto site ?

Have a lovely night out tonight, and try not to talk about the kids all night Wink

MarvellousCake · 07/05/2016 09:46

Needed there are lots of really tasty veggie things you can eat on this diet. And the great thing is you should add some fat to each meal so you can eat (in moderation) cheese and nuts etc.

I'm not veggie, but a member of my family is so we eat a lot of veggie food. On this diet I'm generally eating the things we would normally have but without the starchy sides (rice, pasta, bread, tatties). My carbs are coming from fruit, veg and pulses.

Some ideas:
The roasted peppers with jewelled salad from the book (can't remember what it's actually called!)
Humous with crudites and some olives
Make a dip from feta mashed into some cottage cheese
Fritatta/crustless quiche
Chilli made with green lentils and kidney beans, with grated cheese or avocado and tomato salsa on the top
A big kale salad (rub olive oil and lemon juice into the leaves and leave for an hour or so before eating) with walnuts, a small amount of cheese, and maybe some other veggies (I had a nice one with a small handful of peas and half a thinly sliced leek).
AND SOUP! Pea and brocolli? A bean minestrone (no pasta)? Cauliflower cheese soup?

As for me, I'm end of week 4, down 9lb altogether to 9st10. Feeling pretty good about that! I'm experimenting with gram flour this week, so will report back later...

MarvellousCake · 07/05/2016 10:58

...Gram flour test 1:
I made a 'farinata'. You can google for recipes but the one I used was approx 200g gram flour to 600g water, and a dash of salt. Mix until no lumps left. Leave to stand for several hours. Whisk again. Add herbs etc if wanted. Pour into a greased pie dish and cook at a high term (around 210c) until brown on top and set (around 40-50 mins?).
It ends up looking like a sort of baked custard. It tastes like chickpeas with an almost eggy texture in the middle. Although it's not low cal/carb as such, I think a slice of this would go nicely with some soup or salad, and it would be good take-along food eg for a picnic. Apparently you can also slice it up, fry it and serve with eggs.
Cals in one sixth of the 'pie' = 120. Carbs (excl fibre) in one slice = 16g.

oolaroola · 07/05/2016 11:47

Hello all.

Loving all these veggie recipes, really good inspiration.

In a foul mood here - pmt induced I think. I've been really horrible to be around since yesterday!
Had severe cravings for rubbish again yesterday evening. Just about got through it intact. Did eat a pizza crust and a few mouthfuls of wine but largely just ate too many nuts.

Going skating later in a bid to cheer myself up. Other than that don't seem to be able to get motivated - and of course I have a million things that I should be doing.
Hope you all have a good weekend.
The date sounds good newbear have a good time.

Breadandwine · 07/05/2016 12:17

Hi MarvellousCake

I agree, farinata - indeed anything made with a gram flour batter - is full of flavour. Here's my take on it.

IME, you don't need to let it stand for several hours - it's good to go as soon as the lumps are whisked out. Just typing this and thinking about it is making my mouth water - but Saturdays mean pizza in this house, so I'll have to wait until next week to have it again. Smile

mopsytop · 07/05/2016 14:07

Hello, I had started a threat on the BSD but was directed over here. Can I join in? I started this week, so far on day 5, have kept to it rigidly except for one bite of a cream cracker yesterday! I am drinking loads of rosehip tea (very watered down). I am finding it doable but hard some days. But the scales appears to be going down woohoo!

mopsytop · 07/05/2016 14:07

*thread! Not threat!

Not2bObvious · 07/05/2016 15:44

Welcome mops, I'm on the bsd site but find it hard to navigate, so haven't posted for a while there. I like this one thread and the flow.
Days going ok here, did a gym class with weights - v tough but I survived, yeh me. Then did a quick 30 minute walk. Yesterday's eating wasn't out of control but calories too high, trying harder today. Week 3 of what's meant to be a 5:2 approach to bsd. I'm going ok, but it's very much 2 steps forward, 3 steps back. So it's going to have to be 5 good days, 2 naughty instead of the other way around. Yesterday was most definitely 1 of my 2 naughty days BUT lushettes you'll be proud, only 2 small glasses of wine!

OP posts:
Not2bObvious · 08/05/2016 06:46

Where are you all? Off having a life I hope😁 Forgive my numerous posts, I'm working my way soberly (well sober for me!) through this weekend with gritty determination & focus. Came in just under 1500 cals yesterday with a gym class & 14,000 steps so I'm calling that a success for a Saturday. Scales is up 2.6 from Friday to 11.5.6 but that's ok, be back down by Tuesday if I don't lose the plot today and return to 800 tomorrow. Friday was carb'ey and yesterday was quite carb relaxed as well. Today will be low carb but I'd say cals might be 1500 again as sun is meant to shine & I have a little wine in the script 😉
Plan is 800 Mon-Thurs, no alcohol, strict bsd. My target for Friday is 2 pound down, I think it's doable if I stick to plan. Anyone up?

Elvish · 08/05/2016 07:05

Good morning Not2be you sound very cheerful Smile glad you're keeping the Wineunder check, it's hard but it will be worth it.

I had a funny day yesterday, decided not to have breakfast to save cals for later in the day, then had nothing in for lunch that was on plan. Got distracted with a trip to the garden centre and the planting up pots and clearing weeds. I finally noticed it was after 5 and I'd not eaten anything!

So yesterday, including 2 glasses of wine and a whole 12g of chocolate I only had 720 cals. Plus is was the first day in ages I managed 10k steps and I did 40 mins of fitness burners on top of all the gardening.

Another 1lb off today but AF has arrived so I don't know how that's going to impact me. Anyway, only 1 more to go until I've lost 2st so I'm going to use that as today's inspiration.

We're having people round for a BBQ this afternoon so I've got a lot of running about to do and I'm going to have no bread but I might have way too much meat and wine Grin going to try to stick to 1,600ish cals -wish me luck!

Not2bObvious · 08/05/2016 07:33

Well done Elvish! That was a great day, even more outstanding for a Saturday. Nearly 2 stone off is impressive, how longs that take you? I still haven't managed the full stone, ok I did for about 5 minutes!
I'm aiming for a stone by hols in July, if I take Friday's weight as latest standpoint I have 12 pound to go in around 8 weeks. It's doable but it will take more focus that I had been giving it. Enjoy your bbq, it's a great way to eat if you can avoid bread/sugary marinades/potato salad. I had a bbq type food on Friday and had some potato salad, it was like I set off a bomb in my brain, I started on the crusty bread then, nom nom. Little pickers wear big knickers 😉

H3l3naGraham · 08/05/2016 08:08

Little pickers wear big knickers. LOVE it!! Very funny on this sunny Sunday morning, just got up to throw some laundry into the machine & decided to log on.

I had a bad carb day yesterday - went to the theatre for a matinee, totally hilarious, but that involved an early lunch, was a French restaurant.... Well the remoulade starter was deelish, swapped the pasta which came with the rabbit for a small portion of mash, and had cheese, no pud, then there was the crusty French baguette.....not forgetting the tasty red wine.... BUT it was all I ate yesterday so no scales disaster.

So much for being back on track this week. Humfp. But DH is up in town on & off all week next week & I'm not, have a do to go to on Thurs locally but that's it until 20th. Suspect will have one day of temptation next weekend, along with the inevitable Thurs transgression but 9 days on-plan out of 11 should help me refocus.

Today will be brunch of asparagus and poached egg with 1 piece of toast & 2 bits of grilled bacon, early supper will be chilli con carne ( no rice or anything) - but have charity-fundraising quiz night at local bar, which will mean red wine. Again.

I wonder how our reverse 5:2 will work out before swimming-cozzie time not2b .....?

I am impressed at your will-power Elvish , wish I could go all those hours without a rumbly tummy!

Welcome on board mopsy - I find BSD like a maze, this is different but very helpful & we all muddle along very well!Smile

oolaroola · 08/05/2016 08:20

Morning!

Hello mops I find the BSD site tricky too but good for recipes.

Well done not and I know what you mean about the time bomb thing. I smelled deeply the kettle chips I was giving the kids and wanted to scoff a load of bread, chips , chocolate etc for hours after - it put me in a very bad place - aargh!!

In a much better mood today - the power of rollerskating - works every time.

Off to take the hound for a long walk after breakfast. Got loads of gardening to do too to keep me occupied.
Need some rain now actually - too much watering to do by hand.

have a good day everyone

mopsytop · 08/05/2016 11:30

Hello Not2b, H3l3na and oola - I have looked on BSD website and posted in a forum but the threads are not easy to follow and you can't see all the threads you're on like on mumsnet, so I think it's too much work! I am lazy!

I am doing ok so far, I had a couple of glasses of red wine last night (and so went over 800 cals) but otherwise I am doing well and the scales says 6lbs off (!) but I presume that's mainly water and only the first week and weight loss slows down a lot the following weeks, right?

H3l3naGraham · 08/05/2016 11:40

Hi Mops - yes, it does surge to start with, but depends entirely on how much weight you have to lose to be honest, how much exercise & steps you get & how much water you drink, lots of water is necessary on this diet!
