Peas that celeriac recipe would work as well with the butternut squash 'spaghetti' M&S sell, don't have a Tesco near me, but think they do similar 'spaghetti' veggies, this would curtail need for yet another gadget.

I could put this lot up For Sale:

2 x juicers,1 slow but works, the other will take your arm off & re-decorate the kitchen at the same time..
Coffee grinder (does do nuts though, so perhaps I should keep this)
Electronic vegetable chopper (by the time I have sorted it out, I could easily chop 2kgs of carrots by hand)
Electric grill-griddle (uses water to eliminate fumes....... Don't ask)
Cappuccino frother (totally useless, good toy for child to make a bowl of bubbles)
Rice steamer (hahahahaha....)
Deep fat fryer......no comment please

Then there's the selection of useless non-electric gadgets, melon-baller anyone.......?!
Wink

Not2bObvious · 21/04/2016 15:21

Love you list of kitchen aids that sound more hinder some than helpful H3l I'm much better today, thanks all for the well wishes. I did the Jillian shred with kettlebell this morning before a 75 minute walk limp so I'm all exercised out. I'm moving myself into this next stage of bsd cautiously. I'm following the plan but I'm not aiming for 800, only going to do 800 twice a week. I was doing splendid today until I got given an icecream! Oh well it's summer in Ireland today (we get 1 good day & that's what we call summer, we remember the day fondly😉)

That sounds really interesting H3 and pretty fun too, I can see how it would be difficult to give up.
I agree that when being on the move it's hard to stay healthy. Not much good food available on the road and I always end up trying to fit in with what's there.

Cheddar that sounds really stressful, I hope your interview went well.

I love my spiraliser, I've used it loads although mainly just for courgettes because I prefer them to pasta anyway.

H3l3naGraham · 21/04/2016 19:07

oola I have told DH that I want to adopt my relatively shabby spiraliser, because I can then cuddle it & love it for all the good things it has done for me!!

Seriously, it is a brilliant gadget, love it to bits, fascinates me the food-shift, especially as I am old enough(hhhrrmmm) to remember life before it all got so complicated. Do wonder how many young mums cope now, not a challenge I'd want to take up eagerly now.

You are all literally saving me from being a total blob, thank you for your support, humour & just being there, I'm not a beacon of righteousness but I reckon I am a good trier, aren't we all!!!

Xxx

StKildasNun · 21/04/2016 19:41

Michael Mosley mentions a blood sugar monitor in his webchat - can anyone recommend one?

Sputnik · 21/04/2016 19:47

You're welcome H3, I'm sure it is mutual!

Code that is brilliant, are you going to do BSD 5:2 now or have you reached your goal?

Spiralizer sounds interesting, but I have definite minimalist tendencies wrt kitchen gadgets, I have a hand blender and that's it.

Definitely gone over 800 today but on the other hand I did an upper body workout, an abs workout and went swimming so hopefully will have cancelled the excess which was low carb anyway. Feeling great for it, but wondering how my muscles will be feeling tomorrow!

oolaroola · 21/04/2016 19:57

Ah it is a great thread this - I'm really enjoying it.

Have had a bit of a meh day today wrt food and such - no exercise done really.
Steak and vegetables for tea which was really delicious - lord knows how many calories though - seem to have mainly just eaten meat and almond butter today!

But I did have a lovely time with my kids and a bunch of other kids and parents at the woods today so that was really good. And I picked a load of wild garlic to preserve in oil tomorrow, or maybe do a jar of fermented garlic too.
And me and the boys planted runner beans and transplanted a load of tomatoes. More gardening on the menu tomorrow....

Sputnik · 21/04/2016 20:03

StKildas there are a couple recommended on the BSD site here

H3l3naGraham · 21/04/2016 20:03

Goodness oola please can I share in your idyll.... Sounds magical, especially the wild garlic! Wink

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 21/04/2016 20:53

Well, I got the job, but my boss/mentor didn't get hers, so I feel a bit conflicted. Fools! I am celebrating with prosecco and cake, but will be strict again tomorrow.

CodeComplete · 21/04/2016 21:01

Sputnik I plan to do a couple more weeks at 800 cals (usually manage between 800-900 if I'm good) as officially I started 9 weeks ago but there were about 2 weeks of holiday feasting in there somewhere Blush

I've got another 2 stone I hope to lose but I'm not 100% sure - I haven't been that weight since I was a teenager so I don't know if it'll still suit me. I'm short at 5ft 3in and started at 11st 7lb, now 10st 3lb ish and my goal weight is somewhere between 8st and 9st. I'll probably do another 2 weeks of BSD 800 then a few weeks of 5:2 and maybe switch back to some more 800 for a while.

Definitely not ready for maintenance yet unfortunately but I'm finding this way of eating pretty easy actually. I can be quite regimented and organised with food on this diet which suits me a lot. It's when I'm not counting carbs and calories that I go a little crazy and eat too much, so I might find the transition to 5:2 rocky. But at least I've recognised it and found something that's working for me so far.

CodeComplete · 21/04/2016 21:03

Congratulations cheddar enjoy the Cake

H3l3naGraham · 21/04/2016 21:10

Good news cheddar relax a bit & breathe.....!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/04/2016 21:17

Stkildas it might be worth speaking to your gp because if you are prediabetic or possibly might be able to justify them givng you one on prescription (not sure what the criteria would be for this) then this will save you a lot of money! The test strips in particular are very expensive to buy over the counter for the one step machine. I had one when I was pregnant because I had to do regular testing as I had a risk of becoming diabetic so there may be circumstances that mean the gp or nurse could give you a machine/lancets/test strips even if you aren't actually diabetic. I suppose this depends on your general health and medical situation.

oolaroola · 21/04/2016 21:58

Well done Cheddar!! Whoop!

Code you sound similar to me - I'm 5.1 and a bit. I'm lingering between 10.3/5 and aiming for 9 - ideally a bit below as a bit of a buffer but not sure what I'd look like because I was much younger and didn't have 2 kids so wonder if I might look a bit weird!

Think I'm going to aim for feeling and looking healthy and will use that as my guage iykwim...
On a side note, am growing out my hair dye too at the moment - am going to embrace natural grey - tried it last year and chickened out, but going the whole hog this time. Thinking sod it really, time for an all round natural overhaul!

yumyumpoppycat · 21/04/2016 22:34

I have also been looking at the grey thread -. I am 37. Actually I had my haircut recently and have been getting good comments so not ready to ditch the dye quite yet but think I will in a couple of years. I am 5ft almost 4 inches 10.5.9 and today had the oh you don't want to lose too much weight comments, but defo room to lose more, I guess maybe not at a fast pace like during the 8 weeks when I was sticking with 800 a lot more.

Not2bObvious · 22/04/2016 06:35

oola, code and yum you're all around what I reckon will be my goal weight. In an ideal world I'd like to be 9.11 but I have a feeling it mightn't suit me now - and I think it could be very hard boring to maintain. I've been stuck between 12 and 13 stone for a decade! And the previous decade I was stuck between 11.7 and 12.7. I had close to 2000 cals yesterday and I'm still around 11.4 (was up by .8 but hadn't had a you know what, drank a pint of water, had you a know what but no point weighing after all that water) I'm changing my official weigh in to Friday's so this is day 1 of 5:2 BSD, although it's unlikely to be an 800 day😉
H3l I'm delighted you feel that way about the support we've all built here, I totally second you. I think we have a lovely little band of sisters (and the occasional brother😉)

Obs2016 · 22/04/2016 07:15

StKilda are you sure you need a blood testing machine?
Have you spoken to your GP?
The bayer one is not available. And the accu one is £15 or £30. Both are good. But it's the strips that really cost. £30 a pot some of them.

Obs2016 · 22/04/2016 07:16

Congratulations cheddar!

Sputnik · 22/04/2016 08:01

Morning all, don't seem to have lost much this week, maybe the 3 week plateau? I seem to remember this happening when I did my first 4 week bout of BSD. Anyhow, not going to let it bother me, I've made good progress on the exercise front this week and looking literally in better shape, so will focus on that. Now to get my act together and do a workout!

Obs2016 · 22/04/2016 08:24

I'm doing ok, I think.
I am similar to not2, olla, code and yum, in that I am very small -5'1.
I weighed today- 10.0.6 - yes, why has my stupid scales started adding in this .06 bit?
I want to be in the 9's. I was on 1/4/16, then I went up 3 lbs to 10.3, now I'm back to trying to get into the 9's. Come on. I have to do this. I need to be 9.5-9. I have a stone to lose.

oolaroola · 22/04/2016 08:57

So there's a bunch of us who are small - I like it!

Not I've been wondering about the maintenance thing too and how easy/tedious it might be to keep it up. I really don't want to do all this hard work again. I guess it's all about the lifestyle change and balancing fun/life with good health - I presume we'll know when we get there.

yum is there a grey thread? will try and find it.

Sput I'm stepping away from the scales too cos I'm plateauing (is that a word?) so going to try and concentrate on exercise instead - I guess you can't really go wrong then.

H3 it was lovely - raining here today, shame.

H3l3naGraham · 22/04/2016 09:04

Morning all, I was being so good yesterday until I got invited down to the bar...... So supper was wine & peanuts......then I was starving but resisted a restaurant in favour of 2 hard boiled eggs from M&S and a little black bean & sweetcorn salad. Because drinkies was early the only redeeming feature of yesterday asides from tiny breakfast & lunch was the fact that the last thing I ate touched my lips at 7.30 before I passed out finally went to sleep at 9PM.....

Obs2016 · 22/04/2016 09:10

H3 how do you show such self control?
I was BORN to party. I don't get out much Wink, when I do, Wine Wine Wine I just party like its 1999, as Prince would say.

zobalina77 · 22/04/2016 09:34

I've done it, 8 weeks completed! 27 pounds lost and many, many inches gone. None of my clothes fit anymore, well apart from a lovely skater dress that I wore as a top before as it was too short and you could see my bottom but now it fits as a dress. I took my son to a club that he goes to once a month last night and everyone was really lovely and coming up and saying how well I look and how my skin looks really good.

I had planned that after the 8 weeks I would have a weekend off and then start the 5:2 version, but you know what I don't want to have a weekend off as carby food doesn't really appeal anymore. So i am starting the 5:2 today. Can I stay here or do I have to go to the 5:2 thread?
