I've posted on another thread but thought I'd ask on this one also. I haven't bought the book yet. Does anyone know if this diet is suitable for vegetarians? Also, what happens after the 8 weeks?

I have 1.5 stone to lose. I tried the 5/2 but didn't see much progress. Before I buy the book I wanted to try a few meal plans for a week to see if I can manage the diet.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 04/04/2016 12:06

Thanks all - I will stick with the 2 meals, I think. I am absolutely starving and a bit light-headed on Day 2 here - I hope I get used to this quickly!

I'm going to have a slice of toast on Friday morning because I've got a doctor's appt to ask for investigations into IBS type symptoms and I want the doctor to test me for coeliac disease, and I've heard that you need to be eating gluten for the test to work.

welshbubba · 04/04/2016 12:30

Steamy I think the diet is fine for vegetarians. You're allowed pulses, lentils etc and cheese as long as within cals.

Tooextra you will need to have been eating gluten regularly before your test. Dh was tested last year. He'd cut out gluten as he felt better off it but had to reintroduce it for a couple of weeks before his test.

H3l3naGraham · 04/04/2016 12:33

2Extra - drink lots of water, it will help with the light-headed issues. Nibble on a few almonds as well, this is ok diet-wise & is in the book.

welshbubba · 04/04/2016 12:35

Sorry steamy didn't answer your other question. After 8 weeks you either do a 5:2 version of it eating a Mediterranean diet for 5 days or go onto Mediterranean all the time depending on your goals.

ExConstance · 04/04/2016 12:55

I'm vegetarian and although it is a little more difficult to meal plan - no simple steamed fish or grilled chicken to rely on I am doing OK. I have egg of some kind for breakfast, and some days porridge (just made with water and a dribble of milk with a few raspberries or blueberries) lunch is just a box of salad with a few beans or chickpeas added and some cottage cheese/quorn slices/tofu or feta cheese. For dinner I'm more reliant on quorn than I'd like but vegetable curry, stuffed peppers and omelettes on the days I haven't already had one are fine. I think I can keep to it for 8 weeks but I'll need some rice and pasta after that.

I'm not diabetic or pre diabetic but I do tend to put on weight around my middle and felt this was probably the best diet to tackle that, also approaching late middle age with my internal organs surrounded by fat sounds rather unhealthy.

mootime · 04/04/2016 13:34

The other thing that's good for feeling light headed is stock cubes. It's the salt... It also makes you feel like you are having a bowl of soup. It's what I'm currently drinking to distract myself from all the people eating burritos in our office ...

H3l3naGraham · 04/04/2016 14:21

Hi MooTime - sooooo right, we almost have shares in Miso soup in this house, does help doesn't it, you feel as if you are actually eating something more than water & flavouring!!

Not2bObvious · 04/04/2016 15:35

I couldn't get on board with miso, bought a pack of it, nope not for me. Left it in my work kitchen where nothing lasted for more than 5 minutes. 5 months later it was still there 😆 Now bovril I can manage. Having a funny food day, had my Greek yog/berries/almonds, scrambled egg with salmon for lunch but I'm really not sure whether I want dinner. Or to be exact I don't want to cook dinner for anyone! Tired of being chief cook and bottle washer. In the old days that meant takeaway but really what can you have? It's good in a way I suppose, it rules pizza/chips/dishes with rice out. Oh I dunno, Monday mood I think. I'd love to just go home, dump the car, walk for an hour listening to an audio book. Reality is collect kids from DF, feed him something, get home, feed them something, clean up, do lunches, clean up....repeat ad nauseum. I think I have post totm hormones lol!

Don't worry Not2B I am all over the place today, and have realised I have left it too late for my walk, eating in this 8 hour window means that I seem to spend all day in the s-dding kitchen.......

But last weekend in town was nice, lovely to eat out so much, without paying for it on the scales............complete mad house here as flicking all the laundry whilst DH boards in the loft (odd noises & much swearing coming from attic) before we go off again on Wed, have massive function to attend in London (really posh frock thing) then back to Kent for a party at the opening of a new hotel, then on Friday off to Bournemouth for the weekend to see friends & go to another massive function.......thankfully I can now fit into my evening frocks without looking like a large green sausage. So why am I moaning (have nothing to complain about) - I just need a week to chill, collect my thoughts, restrict food & drink heavily without playing games with my digestion & liver.... ConfusedNeed to catch up on chores. Also need to realise that we chose a barmy lifestyle, we really like it so I should just shut up & enjoy it. However reading this back, I can see how heavily alcohol features in our lives & I am truly amazed that excluding daft weeks like this one, we have now dropped to just 2 days a week with drinkies ie. 1 bottle of wine between us. I could probably be rather slim if I didn't like the fermented wine juice so very much.....

How long did it take you to recover from your night on the tiles, I should imagine that with your Father to care for, your daily etc that you probably like to let your hair down when you go out? Lady after my own heart!Wink

mootime · 04/04/2016 16:19

Not2B - I know how you feel! Seems endless some days doesn't it.

I have been keeping a stash of daylesford organic ready meals for days like this. They are expensive but cheaper than a takeaway and low in carbs and cals so teamed with cauli rice they are an easy go to dinner.

I also can't do miso, I just have half a kallo stock cube. They are yummy!

Struggling today. First day back at work and back in 800 cals. Am totally starving and somehow need to wait until I get home at 7.30. Fingers crossed DH won't have forgotten I'm doing this and cooked something high cal!!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 04/04/2016 17:13

Struggling a bit with day 2 - does your appetite reduce after a bit? How long until it does, do you reckon? I've drunk lots of water and herbal tea and I had a Greek salad for lunch (MFP says I'm on 440 cals) but I'm still starving.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 04/04/2016 17:13

I should take some stock cubes to work tomorrow but I will get really funny looks!

Obs2016 · 04/04/2016 17:15

I can't do miso either.
If I get very desperate I have a Diet Coke.

Not2bObvious · 04/04/2016 17:31

Oh yes H3l I am inclined to over do it when I go out these days, esp if I'm with my bro as he's also helping with my Dad, but I see him more as he helps me with childcare these days. I think I'm struggling a bit with how life is now after my mum passing, ups & downs. I actually got over the hangover pretty ok, better than other times but I was ready for bed by 10pm, struggled on til 11pm so as not to leave dh to cope with dad on his own (not that he minds, he's a saint and dad can be vg company after a few wines lol) I was brand new yesterday.
Still dreading doing anything, might just go out when dh gets in soon, let him deal with it! 😉

Hi 2Extra - if stock cubes raise eyebrows, try marigold Swiss Vegetable Bouillon Powder, comes in tubs, sell it at Waitrose, Holland & Barrett & most Health Food shops. Goes a long way, a handful of almonds does help too, providing it's a small handful i.e child size......... If you get starving eat one of those Babybel little round cheese things, as they are easy to have around at work & won't raise any eyebrows.

I tend to get hungry mid afternoon, so nibble as above & eat dinner early. I am lucky as I now work based from home, but would probably keel over if I had to wait until 7.30 for my main meal.

Can you take a thermos of more nourishing soup to work eg minestrone with some borlotti beans in it, without the pasta? I bulk cook soup & freeze it, if I haven't got the on-plan ingredients at home for whatever reason, we have soup for lunch one day ( add a little fat to your soup, i.e. cream, or blue cheese with cauli as examples, helps with hunger-pangs) and salad the next, stuffing red-peppers with feta & pomegranate seeds lasted all of 2 weeks, was quicker to make it into a salad......swiftly followed by smoked salmon & avocado salad, then chicken salad....

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 04/04/2016 18:10

Making hearty soup sounds awesome. I shall try that. I meal-planned for this week based on previous salady type low carb lunches - I think I need some hot soups! There's a microwave at work so I can take soup to heat up. Probably not for tomorrow as I won't be home until 7 tonight, but I will try to make some lentilly soup soon. I think one reason I've struggled today is because I've been at work since 7am and will be finishing at 6.30. It's been a long day! Thank you for answering my questions so promptly - v friendly in this corner of MN!

H3l3naGraham · 04/04/2016 18:12

Hi Not2B - bereavement affects us all in different ways, it isn't just a question of losing those you love, I found it started a process of me questioning myself, looking back over the years since I was tiny, my parents role in my life, where I have got to now, what I have acheived, or not.....then there's the slow realisation that I am now, to all intents & purposes at the head of the family. Gulp.

You have to be kind to yourself, it takes time, you will never forget your mum, but it is true what people say, the grief & sadness changes, look at your children, your family, take pride in what you have created, your mum would be proud of all you have done & would, I am sure, be delighted at your determination to fight the fat on top of juggling everything else in your life.

Not2bObvious · 04/04/2016 19:07

Thanks H3l, you're very kindFlowers Feel much better now as I got out for a 40 min walk & only got a little wet. Just finished a warm chicken salad & a pint of water (would have preferred pint of Wine but hey-ho😉) Came home to a house of chaos, kids have decimated the sitting room but are having a ball so feck it, let 'em at it. 799 cals and I'm a tad hungry still but I'm going to just ride it out, nice cup of tea will help in a few mins.

Memo to self - do not go shopping when hungry! It seemed everything i love but shouldn't eat was on offer including ben and jerrys icecream Sad! But have tried to keep myself on track with the possibility of reaching 21lb tomorrow - would have to lose a lb in a day but still....And 3lb until I'm in the next stone bracket. So am sticking to my planned veg curry for tea!

Obs2016 · 04/04/2016 21:33

I have weighed again.
Am still up 6lbs. Up to 10-4 from 9-12. No alcohol consumed in last week, a small bit of chocolate.
Maybe the scales tricked me, when I made a big deal of going below 10 stone.
Am truely pissed off though.

agteacht · 04/04/2016 22:00

Oh no obs, when was it 9 12? And what was it before that? Maybe tomorrow it will correct itself

Not2bObvious · 04/04/2016 22:17

Aww crap Obs, that sucks😖 I'd give that scale a good kicking! What/when was your last weight before you registered the 9.12? Trying to gauge if this could be fluid/waste retention?

So I'm 900g down after one day :)

Had the lamb and eggplant from the book for dinner super yummy.

Mellowautumn · 05/04/2016 03:15

I hit the M&S food hall today - some ideal nice chilled soups and lots of bean based things - expensive but handy for days when Im too busy to cook
