Just wondering if anyone has tried this and how it went? I am about ten days in and coping well so far.

I have been low carbing for years on and off, and on 5:2 since Sept which seems to make the fasting easier.

wheres - sounds good. You could always buy peanuts

suzannecaravaggio · 06/02/2016 23:51

mushy peas are a bit hardcore for me Bigchoc!
do you happen to know if there are theories re possible mechanisms via which legumes help with T2 diabetes?

suzannecaravaggio · 06/02/2016 23:54

....a quick google suggests that it's because the GI index is lower than with other commonly eaten complex carbs

antimatter · 07/02/2016 00:24

suzanne, there's new way to look at food and is called Insuline Index.
Legumes have the lowest Induline Index of all food groups.
Have look at this thread. Lots to read and take in

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/low_carb_bootcamp/2562373-Does-anyone-know-anything-about-the-insulin-index

suzannecaravaggio · 07/02/2016 00:50

thanks Antimatter it's a complex subject I know!

recent study here suggests that postprandial gylcemic response varies significantly from person to person
www.cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092-8674(15)01481-6
they suggest this is (in part) due to differences in the microbiome

I notice wholehealthsource.blogspot is linked to in that thread, I've been reading his blog for a few years, I find him very interesting, he has a book out soon!

BigChocFrenzy · 07/02/2016 01:39

Antimatter Mosely's book has several recipes with peas - BSD is not standard low carb or paleo:
"There are carbs in this diet, but the sort that your body takes longer to break down and absorb. That means legumes (beans, pulses, lentils), not pasta, rice or potatoes."

Suzanne I can only find studies on the classic Mediteranean diet which includes beans & pulses (plus grains) and has had some success in improving insulin & CVD markers.
The book recommends beans, lentils, peas among other foods to increase fibre:
"Fibre not only slows the absorption of sugars, but, because it passes largely undigested through the small bowel, it also provides food for the trillions of healthy bacteria that lurk in the large bowel."
We know that gut bacteria can affect the propensity to gain/ lose weight.

Women & Men and Low Carb vs Low Fat vs Mediterranean

Study NewEngJ Med compared 3 diets:
low fat / low carb / standard Mediteranean (with grains, not the BSD)
for 2 years , much longer than most studies.

Typical for most studies, far more male participants than female.
Women did much better on the Mediterranean Diet over 2 years, men slightly better on low carb.
Low fat was worse for all and appalling for the women.

277 male participants with mean 24-month weight loss:

  • 3.4 kg on lf
  • 4.0 kg on Med
  • 4.9 kg on lc Only 45 women participants, but their mean 24-month weight loss:
  • 0.1 kg on lf !!
  • 6.2 kg on Med
  • 2.4 kg on lc
Obs2016 · 07/02/2016 01:47

Just checking in.
Welcomes newbies.

I have been so ill with my chest infection I've hardly eaten anything. But what I did wasn't great. I ate nothing, then ended up in A&E because of breathing difficulties and whilst there ended up eating part of a vile limp stale white bread cheese sandwich and a cup of tea. Great!
Today dh forced me to have a bit of yoghurt with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries. I only ate a tiny bit. Then he made me a lovely salad with a few prawns, but I could only eat few mouthfuls. Then tonight I ate a very small slice of dominos pizza.
Errrr, so not the best then?????!!!

MrsHerculePoirot · 07/02/2016 07:19

Hello! I might join you if I may? Although I teach and get very caught up in work but will try to keep up!

I am T2, and having controlled amazingly with LC after second child had been horrific - not taking meds or eating properly. I am at the end of week 2 and have found it amazing. I feel amazing, I have loved the food, I have only felt hungry once on the second night so just went to bed. I am roughly following meal plans but not breakfast on work days - I either have nothing or take two boiled eggs to work!

I was 12 lbs down yesterday. My fasting blood has reduced from 22 to under 8 this morning. I have so much more energy, have enjoyed cooking again, have tried things I thought I might not like. I have navigated around eating out a few times. MFP is my friend. I play sport once a week and no problems with that and am going to start couch to 5k soon too hopefully!

I am going for the whole eight weeks! Can't recommend it enough so far...

Wheresthattomoibabber · 07/02/2016 07:56

I slept so well! Have planned my food and entered it into mfp which helps me stick to it.

MrsH you are doing brilliantly! It's so inspiring to have people posting their successes a couple of weeks down the line.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/02/2016 09:33

Crikey, Obs I hope that chest problem goes quickly.
Do prioritise your health.
Flowers
As with 5:2, I v strongly recommend people who are ill to PAUSE the dieting and switch to healthy maintenance, until they are fully recovered
i.e. Low Carb Mediteranean if poss (but don't be strict), no junk, no booze, plenty of water.

Just eat as much healthy food as you wish, so your body & immune system have plenty of nutrients to enable speedy recovery. And I said drink water !

Welcome, MrsHP Brilliant start

Wheresthattomoibabber · 07/02/2016 10:01

Second the advice to switch to healthy maintenance while ill. Hope you feel better very soon.

Weighed myself this morning....

How have I lost 3lb in 24 hours???! Stomach so much flatter too. Bring it on!

Eva50 · 07/02/2016 12:52

I downloaded the book on kindle Yesterday and finished reading it last night. I don't have T2, yet, but it's only a matter of time. I have had several fasting blood sugars in the 6's and sometimes get shaky if I'm hungry especially if I have had quite a lot of carbs earlier in the day.

I think I will find 800 cals very hard going but it's only for 8 weeks. If I survive that I would do 5:2 or 4:3 with 800cal/Mediterranean diet. I have tried and failed at 5:2 previously. I had thought I would wait until half term/my birthday/Valentines day were past but that's almost another two weeks and if this works I could be 1/2 a stone lighter by then so I plan to start now tomorrow. Certainly some people seem to be getting good results.

Obs2016 · 07/02/2016 14:02

Well, I've lost a stone!
But I don't recommend my technique to anyone. I was doing ok on 800, but then for the last 5 days I ate almost nothing, because I couldn't swallow. Don't try this at home!

But am feeling a tiny bit better. Dh is shopping for courgettes, feta, peppers, mushrooms. Going to do molesley's stuff lamb aubergines recipe.

Obs2016 · 07/02/2016 14:03

Eva, which bit of 5:2 did you find hard?

Obs2016 · 07/02/2016 14:07

Big Choc, please could you do me a favour? Could you spell it out, in idiots guide Wink
When we finish the 800, and move to maintenance, the Mediterranean, what actually is that.
800 moves to what?
What are you now able to include, that you weren't previously, on the 800.

And yes, I have read the book. But I just don't 'get' what the difference is, what the badics of the long term lifestyle is.

Laska5772 · 07/02/2016 15:29

Obs its just that you only do 2 days at 800 cals and the rest of the week not , (but follow the med diet princlpes as set out in the book and not count calories) ,

If you are worried that you may be eating too much on non fast days then it is a good idea to know TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure - the average number of calories you burn in a day).

This will give you a guide as to what you should be eating on your non fast days.

Laska5772 · 07/02/2016 15:31

Here is a link to an explanantion of non fast days and a TDEE calculator

yumyumpoppycat · 07/02/2016 15:32

I haven't done very well weightloss wise over recent days. Probably need to be stricter all round next week. I have had all my calories for the day so one last coffee then fasting on herbal tea. Had 1 egg, garlic mushrooms and a small slice of protein rye bread for breakfast, latte while out with dc, and for late lunch we had a roast, so for me roast chicken, half a courgette chipped and baked sprinkled with a little dry polenta, a few carrots, a small amount of potato a gravy made with shallots and pan juices (yum). Chicken 'jus' has loads of calories!!

yumyumpoppycat · 07/02/2016 15:42

I think one of the main differences is that red wine is allowed.

Laska5772 · 07/02/2016 16:17

I went over about 100 yesterday , but did a 7 mile walk , weight was the same this morning.

Yesterdays and todays breakfast was really nice, I chopped 3 mushrooms up and started them off in a pan with a little butter, then wilted a good half bag of watercress rocket and spinach leaves and a small chopped spring onion on top, then added 2 eggs beaten with a little s&p , and 3 chopped cherry tomatoes , whisked it around until the eggs were done ,a splash of chilli sauce and YUM..

For those missing bread have you heard of Cloud Bread? I just read about it onthe BSD site.. sounds good ( though I think ill try it without the sweetener though )

Wheresthattomoibabber · 07/02/2016 16:34

Struggling a bit now. Feeling nauseous and headachy.

On the upside I have been shopping and the fridge is a positive rainbow of veg! Also very pleased to discover Aldi had pomegranates. Got a 1kg pack of chicken breast and a 1kg salmon side. Have split both into 100g portions and bunged them in freezer. Think I will do similar with lamb mince and beef mince then it should make things nice and easy. Bought yeo valley yogs as recommended and they are delicious.

Wheresthattomoibabber · 07/02/2016 17:27

Totally cheered up now! Cloud bread is amazing. And cloud bread pizza is even better!

MrsHerculePoirot · 07/02/2016 18:07
