Just wondering if anyone has tried this and how it went? I am about ten days in and coping well so far.

I have been low carbing for years on and off, and on 5:2 since Sept which seems to make the fasting easier.

I'm getting my blood sugar tested at the end of the 8 weeks but the HbAc1 test I think measures across the previous 6 months, so to what extent will the 8 week diet affect that? I'm thinking not much...?

Laska5772 · 05/02/2016 17:19

Friday WI.. have lost 8.5 lbs in a week and a half.. Grin

Ok so ill 'fess up now, my weight was 11.7.5 this morning , ( I have been a bit scared to admit my weight because i'm so ashamed after losing so much beforeand putting it all back on, and also I didnt want to admit to old 5:2 buddies just how much I put on.Blush Sad.)

I want to get back down to 10st again, but this is now feeling a lot more do-able than before ..

Laska5772 · 05/02/2016 17:24

Today have had eggs for breakfast ,
had an 'unplanned for' lunch with DS - pea and parmesan soup in a cafe (I didnt eat the bread, and have counted it as 300 cals to be on the safe side) Dinner is steak and salad ..

I think I should be around the 800, ( but because I went out have scrapped the avocado I was going to have with the salad) I may still have a sliver of goats cheese with it though

yumyumpoppycat · 05/02/2016 18:22

Oh my goodness zen now i want a crisp butty!

Today I had omelettes and salad for breakfast and dinner Blush and a small baked potato with a small amount of cheese so not very exciting or mediterranean but think I am about ok for calories.

Iguana hope your blood tests are ok.

yumyumpoppycat · 05/02/2016 18:23

By the way laska I weigh almost the same as you and hoping for the same weight.

Laska5772 · 05/02/2016 19:48

Great yumyum we should be ideal diet buddies then!

BigChocFrenzy · 06/02/2016 07:07

Great progress here. Well done everyone

Laska 8 weeks of 800 cals is a VLCD, so it must lose weight much more quickly than 5:2, ADF, low carb, WW or any other standard diet with a more moderate calorie deficit.

Don't waste your hard work though:
Plan to move onto BSD maintenance after those 8 weeks are up,
i.e. LC Mediteranean at daily TDEE, or with 1-2 x 800-cal FDs weekly.

If your return to your old WOE, you return to your old weight

TheWoodenSpoonOfMischief · 06/02/2016 08:03

Hi. I've been lurking on this thread and was inspired by this.
I started it a week and a half ago and have lost 7lbs.
I always knew low carb was better for me but I could never stick to it.
The fact that I can eat beans and lentils has made this really doable.
I'm not prediabetic but I definitely think I'm insulin sensitive, if that's a thing.
I have been having yoghurt with a couple of tablespoons of no sugar muesli for breakfast every day. I know that's not in the plan but it's working for me.
I think the biggest thing for me is giving up bread. I don't think I can ever go back to eating it even after I've lost weight.
I'm also 11.7 st and hoping to get down to 9.7.
I'm so happy that I've finally found something that works for me. I thought I never would and felt horrible feeling so fat and unhealthy and unable to do anything about it.

Yddraigoldragon · 06/02/2016 09:42

Welcome WoodenSpoon, love the nn! Insulin sensitivity is definitely a thing, looking back I can recognise the effects with me for many years, I didn't do anything about it and ended up T2. It is a slippery slope and I think so many people these days are in danger of sleepwalking their way over the edge.

TheWoodenSpoonOfMischief · 06/02/2016 10:02

Thanks for the welcome Smile
I have a lot of weight around my middle that I've gained over three pregnancies that I couldn't seem to shift at all. I'm fairly active. I walk lots, do exercise DVDs, go out cycling from time to time etc but I just couldn't control my food intake.
I used to get the shakes when I got hungry. It was a really horrible feeling which made me think I could never diet. I'd have to calm the shakes down by eating lots of bread or biscuits. I don't even like biscuits!
It just felt I had no control.
In the last 10 days or so, I've got hungry lots of times and have been fine waiting for the next meal time!
I'm amazed.

antimatter · 06/02/2016 10:04

Iguana I thought that HbAc1 measures average of 3 months not 6.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/02/2016 10:52

Well done WoodenSpoon on taking this important 1st step to a healthier metabolism. That's a good SV too.

I totally agree that the addition of beans, lentils, peas make Low Carb Mediteranean more sustainable -and imo healthier - longterm. Also plain yoghurt.

I've sometimes been a bit dubious about longterm low carb or paleo precisely because they usually cut out these very healthy foods, despite the fact they are packed with nutrients and are known to help blood sugar issues.
You can do the maintenance program for life; it has all the nutrients & variety you need.

IguanaTail · 06/02/2016 12:19

Oh is it 3 months? That's more hopeful then.

I had dough balls last night for a night out. Immediately felt bloated and sick. I think I'm going to call it a day where bread is concerned. I love it but it doesn't love me.

I'm still not really sure how to cook beans and lentils. I've bought some cans of them.

Wheresthattomoibabber · 06/02/2016 13:10

Hello folks. Bought the book, read the webchat and started today. My thinking was that lots of people give stuff up over lent and it's half term so I can feel hideous in peace (I work in a school).

Had a nice late breakfast - baked mushroom, egg and bacon with a bit of salt and pepper. Came in at 185 calories. I'm using mfp to track. No idea what else to eat today - I think maybe beetroot falafel for supper? Anyone tried them yet?

IguanaTail · 06/02/2016 13:14

You could have some full fat hummus with carrot sticks. Or make yourself a chicken salad. Or prawn salad. I use plain yogurt for mayonnaise and just squirt in a tiny bit of mayo and salt and pepper and chopped basil. Just as nice. The green Yeo Valley plain yogs are the nicest.

Wheresthattomoibabber · 06/02/2016 13:29

Yum - all good suggestions!

antimatter · 06/02/2016 14:17

orange lentils you cook in at least 2 amount of water
green lentils - as if it was pasta (lots of water)

all beans I soak overnight wit ha pinch of bicarb of soda (it suppose to help with them not contributing towards bloating)

I cook next day in lots of water until they are soft.

I read somewhere that especially black beans are very nutritious

IguanaTail · 06/02/2016 15:47

Just made delicious soup.

Chopped onion and garlic and fried in olive oil. Added lentils, carrot chopped up, can of tomatoes, tomato purée, dried Provençal herbs and vegetable stock. Boiled then reduced to simmer for 15 mins then added cannelloni beans from can and left bubbling for 15 mins. Added salt pepper.

Grilled some bacon and chopped up some basil.

After 15 mins, put soup in bowl, put spoon of natural yogurt on top and then some chopped up bacon and basil over the top of that. Yum.

Wheresthattomoibabber · 06/02/2016 17:00

I had a sort of stew for an early supper in the end:
Tin of tuna
Onion
Courgette
Tin of green lentils
Tablespoon oil
Tablespoon tomato puree
Tomato

It was absolutely lovely. I had half of it and half is in a tub for my lunch tomorrow. Took about 1 minute to prep!

suzannecaravaggio · 06/02/2016 17:01

It's based on work by Prof. Taylor (Newcastle Uni Hospital ) that is really gaining ground now and IIRC won him the Diabetes UK Banting prize

thanks for the info Bigchocfrenzy I've looked him up and read about him and his work, very interesting!

I'm a huge fan of lentils, I eat them every day

suzannecaravaggio · 06/02/2016 18:11

one of his talks if anyone is interested

We usually have a take away curry on Saturdays. I was going to make one but didn't get round to it.
Dh and I had a chicken curry and mixed veg curry and salad with a little bit of brown rice (3 tablespoons). Normally we'd have our plates piled high with pilau rice.
That was our least healthiest meal this week.

Some of the things we've had this week -
Grilled Cajun chicken with bean, courgette, tomato and Parmesan bake.
Thai soup with sweet potato, mange tout, baby corn and spinach.
Chickpea and squash curry.
Grilled fish with broccoli and bean mash.

Wheresthattomoibabber · 06/02/2016 19:47

Really pleased with today! Total for the day was 802 and it's felt really good. I had six almonds as a snack to finish my calories and they were really sweet and delicious. Hope tomorrow is just as good. Already have lunch ready left over from today. Planning breakfast of porridge and frozen berries and supper will be chicken salad. Will go and do a good shop for stuff like full fat yoghurt. Going to the pub tomorrow night but have volunteered to drive so will stick to fizzy water - the pub sells litre bottles and they're really cheap. Need to avoid crisps though. We usually get a few bags and share them. Might take almonds in case of emergency!

BigChocFrenzy · 06/02/2016 22:40

Smile Suzanne Mm, lentils & beans. I'm a pea monster as well, just love all kinds - petit pois to mushy peas.

antimatter · 06/02/2016 23:08

I think petit pois won't be allowed on this diet, they have too many carbs.
