Just wondering if anyone has tried this and how it went? I am about ten days in and coping well so far.

I have been low carbing for years on and off, and on 5:2 since Sept which seems to make the fasting easier.

yumyumPoppy NOW I do remember you.(your name was was Giraffesdo..something wasnt it?) . yes EVIL JILLIAN! Shall we start it again? Im sure I have it on a dust filled shelf somewhere.. did you have the leggara salad at pizza express? ,I had it the otherday, with extra chicken and it was yummy

The cake is a 2nd 'christmas' cake ( we have nuts on top not icing) which I'm amaking at DH , DS and DMIL request as the first one has all been yomped now and they want more, so when its made 2/3 wil be portioned out and not stay in the house (DS &DMIL) the remaining bit will be ok , fruitcake is not really my thing..

Laska5772 · 30/01/2016 16:59

obs 8lb is FANTASTIC.. keep at it!

IguanaTail · 30/01/2016 17:32

8lb is sixteen packets of butter!!

Obs2016 · 30/01/2016 17:45

Don't they say that if you lose too much it's just water?
But Molesley says you will lose ALOT quickly.

IguanaTail · 30/01/2016 18:30

It's an amazing motivator!

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2016 11:31

Obs 8lb in 2-3 weeks is very quick, especially if you are a woman - and you say you haven't been doing it 100% strictly.
The 800 cals and the LC Med are important, so if you have wine and carbs during the 8 weeks, that will slow things down.

Also, the average weight loss in the book would include men, who nearly always lose more on any diet - one bloke lost 19lb the 1st week (presumably at least 15 lb water !)

Someone asked on the main thread for link to the 5:2 BSD which is option #2 on Mosely's BSD site

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2016 11:46

The BSD lists those with T1 in FAQs for who should NOT fast or do 800 cals ever.
I think they just do the maintenance lc med version.

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2016 12:01

His FAQ says best to cut out alcohol totally for the 8 weeks and "Alcohol will increase fat storage and inflammation in the liver, increasing the insulin resistance that promotes weight gain and diabetes"

Obs2016 · 31/01/2016 16:02

Oh dear Choc!! Wine
I consumed tonnes Wine last night at my friends 40th!
Well, do you think it's ok to continue as I am?
What do you reckon?

I'm not struggling, feeling hungry or anything.
I'm making chilli's, courgetti, chick pea and cauliflower and pumpkin curry.
I'm having, for example, yoghurt with passion fruit and almonds in the morning.
I'm drinking tonnes of water.
No fasting as such. I am having to have a small amount of lucozade when I go low. I am in regular contact with my diabetes specialist nurse - she reviews all my data and makes recommendations.
I think I am OK to carry on.
I have a couple of curry's and wine night out's planned in Feb.
So I see that as mediocre, not stringent following.

Obs2016 · 31/01/2016 16:05

Actually I weighed myself on 1st Jan, didn't start this till .... 7th? And then only minorly. It's only been in the last 2 weeks I've followed it more closely. And even then a few cheats.
So the weight loss is really across the whole month of Jan.

yumyumpoppycat · 31/01/2016 16:30

Ooh yes defo up for a bit of shredding Laska haven't done it in ages. I can prob only do 1 this week as supposed to be doing some other workouts but could do more of an evil gillian challenge the week after? Pizza express is quite good as they do an online PDF of their menu, and Pret a manger also has some brill salad options, crayfish salad with avocado is only a smidge over 200 cals and quite filling. They do a pot with two boiled eggs with a couple of spinach leaves which would prob seem a daft buy but is under £2 and good in an emergency!

Obs defo be cautious but great that you have lost so much without being super strict.

Weirdly I am dropping exactly the same weight day after day!!

Bordercollielover · 31/01/2016 17:56

Seems odd that Taylor used a blanket 800 calories for both men and women; its a very different proportion of usual average TDEE for each.
Must be a reason.

Laska5772 · 31/01/2016 19:30

I will rootle around for my Jillian dvd then.

border i'm glad its the same, I was always miffed on 5:2 at the fellas getting more, I mean my DH is smaller than me (so not fair he gets more ) , though he never needed to fast anyway ( and didnt ) as he is skinny (even more annoying!) Grin

Ive had a really lazy day in today, its a good job I didnt put my fitbit on this morning or else ill be getting a 'sad face' icon ! (i'm not sure it does that but perhaps it should!).

My stuffed portobellos were very good last night , and I didnt have any wine but did have one naughty choc out of the Hotel Chocolat box still left over from Christmas (but just the one).

Today I have had 3 small egg omlette for breakfast and the left over mushrooms and spaghetti squash for dinner..oh and 5 almonds .. so Im over by about 50 cals according to MFP

So pretty good for a weekend when I would have previously drank a couple of bottles of wine and scoffed loads also .. Blush (and likewise on 5:2 as weekend were never fast days so its surprising I lost so much on it really!)

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2016 19:57

Alcohol
Read Mosely's BSD FAQ "Can I drink alcohol"

obs If you are doing this just to lose weight, no problem. Your current WOE just slows down the rate and the total amount you lose, but still is a big improvement.

However, it if it to improve blood sugar and health, do try to cut out alcohol for the remainder of the 8 weeks.
What about dry February ?
It's really important to give your liver a rest, because alcohol and fructose are both processed there and really hammer the liver over the years, with cumulative damage.

If you have preT2 / T2, you need to permanently change what you eat & drink for maintenance. Otherwise, the 8 weeks just brings temporary relief and your weight, liver and T2 will return to where you started.

For maintenance, Mosely recommends nhs alcohol limits

Obs2016 · 01/02/2016 06:58

Thank you Choc. I had read his alcohol before, but I went and read your link again.
I have done dry January before, quite easily actually and have done it most of this Jan aswell. I think I had zero for over 2 weeks, nearly 3, so I don't feel too bad about my 'slip'.

And yes I am really doing it for weight. Plus I like his theories. Plus loads of other diabetics low carb.
In fact we are trying to change the diabetic 'world' of dieticians and gp's that this is the way to go.
As is Mosley.
On his webchat I explained that 2 families I know, recently diagnosed t1 children, told to eat high fibre low fat, loads of carbs and the weigh most of their food.
Weigh? Seriously? Out of the dark ages.
And on the diabetic forum many t1 and t2, hospitals, consultants, gp's not supportive of low carbing.
This needs to change.

But for me it's mostly the weight. I'm not that worried about my blood sugars, they are ok.
And as Mosley says, t1 is not visceral ? Fat round the pancreas, kidney heart that he's trying to address with t2 reversal.
He can't reverse my t1!!!! I wish he could!! I've had it since almost birth.
And I'm now an old and saggy mid 40'er, but I still crave a cure.

I will carry on as I am, until I reach a weight I'm happy with. Then slip into more Mediterranean diet maintenance I guess.

I'm emailing my diabetic pump specialist nurse today. I'll see what she thinks of my blood sugars.

But I guess I'll just carry on as I am at the moment, because I'm finding doing almost no carbs easy.
And I can live with myself if that includes an occasional alcoholic beverage!! WineGrin

Obs2016 · 01/02/2016 07:08

I printed off 4 weeks of mosley's recipes, all in colour, nice pictures, from the mail website (yes, I know, that's criminal on MN)
I like the pictures. It helps me a lot. (Sad bint)
I have enjoyed his chilli halloumi and courgettes, his frittata, the stuffed mushrooms and the cauliflower and chickpea curry.

I am trying the harrisa chicken today.
I definitely recommend this printing off the recipes if you find seeing them helpful.

yumyumpoppycat · 01/02/2016 07:10

I would defo get a sad face today as the scales were up almost 2lbs today!! Water weight I guess, I exercised and had some beetroot flaxseed gf crackers which were quite salty. I was over (but under 900) and a bit salty and carby. Had omelette (1 egg prob as was shared by 5) made with onion, leafy salad and 1 tsp hummus, a latte when out, small slice of spanish ham (30 cals) hully & scully veg soup with beetroot crackers for late lunch, exercised then had an apple and herbal tea in the eve. Gah I can see its not great!

It did explain in the book why women can have the same, can't quite remember was it hormones?

Nearly had a tear as I typed this as they are talking about terry wogan on the radio and finished with him saying 'I won't last forever, I will fold my tent and quietly slip away one of these days'.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/02/2016 11:46

It's just a blip, YumYum
Everyone, whether dieting or not, has day-to-day weight fluctuations, due to water retention, undigested food and especially for women, hormonal swings.
Around totm some women retain 5 lb water or more, which is released after totm

yumyumpoppycat · 01/02/2016 12:26

Thanks big choc. I am not too sad bizarrely, weird thing was I was losing during totm (bout day 4 or 5 now)! I obviously have a weird hormonal balance ;)

Laska5772 · 01/02/2016 19:06

I think its easy to beat ourselves up when the scales go the wrong way.. Mine did also, but only by half a pound.. yes, but thats half a pound the wrong way and so I got cross!

This is where we need to remind ourselves why we are doing it (and not fall into the carbs at the first opportunity) .. I'm great at talking down to myself.. but at the moment still feeling optimistic about losing the wodge.

So today I have had:

B 2 L eggs scrambled in smidge of butter (a 'smidge' is an official Laska term for a wafer thin slice as my pan is very non stick)
L Dr Ms 'skinny chilli' as soup (thats watered down left over skinny chilli with spinach leaves added .. was rather good and theres enough for a couple more days .. I reckon it was less than half a portion , so counted it as 175 cals
D, Dijon chicken breast with courgette , mushrooms , peppers and onion ,

MFP is making that all 670 cals so I must rememeber that half a pound and not eat the rest in chocolate

11548 steps so far..

Obs2016 · 01/02/2016 20:17

Goodness yummy, that doesn't sound like very much food. An apple for dinner?

I eat tonnes.
Yoghurt, blueberries and almonds.
Remains of hallouimi and courgettes from last nights dinner.
But then I went to pizza express for ds1's birthday with 6 of his mates.
Shared calamari and dough balls with dh. Had creamy pasta and a lemonade. Err, not the best!!

IguanaTail · 01/02/2016 20:34

You can only do what you can do. Sometimes the scales will go the wrong way and they were a pound up for me today. But the blood sugar is being sorted so that's more important. Stick with it. I need your support. Don't disappear on us and guzzle some big pastry in your annoyance!

Laska5772 · 01/02/2016 22:08

plus a handfu'l of frozen blackcurrants
and 2 squares of v.dark chocolate Blush

another 76 cals.. still under..

mint tea only now

yumyumpoppycat · 01/02/2016 22:18

Grin Iguana I think 'dont go off and guzzle a big pastry' should be our team motto.

Obs your meal sounds yum hope your ds had a great birthday.

I forgot I had some smoked salmon at breakfast yesterday too, am trying to eat light in the evenings but yup that was not good meal planning!

Today was better had tea, coffees, herbal teas
BF one egg and leftover brocolli and carrot
L a yum warm salad with tinned mackerel, sprouted lentils (on offer), baby kale, corriander smidge of hummus and some other leafy bits
D 'aromatic chicken curry' beany soup with a bit of chicken from the 5:2 meal thing and califlower rice with extra corriander.

Laska your food sounds amazing 3 decent meals for just over 600 cals!

How weird that 3 of us saw a gain on the same day...must have been monday morning heaviness.

yumyumpoppycat · 01/02/2016 22:21

Laska I am pretty sure those are superfoods so actually you just improved the day by eating those and staying under cals Grin
