Just wondering if anyone has tried this and how it went? I am about ten days in and coping well so far.

I have been low carbing for years on and off, and on 5:2 since Sept which seems to make the fasting easier.

yumyum Hummus is great, because you don't have it on its own, but with veg or salad (not bread) Just check the cals. 1-2 tbsp is a sensible serving.
Garlic is a total superfood, packed with more antioxidants than just about anything, for its weight & cals. Honk away !

BigChocFrenzy · 29/01/2016 20:37

Well done on your SV, Laska

Bigchoc

The prif found patients that had surgery lost weight and their diabetes reverted - it was the fat loss around the pancreas that stopped this. He wouldn't accept the theory that it was due to hormones in the gut. This is written in the book.

CloudsAway · 29/01/2016 21:00

I really think I ought to do this, but it just doesn't appeal. I'm not keen on lentils or beans or eggs or fish at all. I can just about deal with hard boiled eggs; chickpeas; green peas and beans, and salmon. I don't know if I could come up with enough decent meals on that!

I also love my cappuccinos, and I'm sure that would be banned totally.

The other thing is that there are always occasions coming up where I'd want to have something - however small - that would have sugar in. Out for dinner, birthday cakes, etc, and though I could deal with a lot of it by choosing right or abstaining from most things or just avoiding going to anything at all, I'd probably still succumb and have a tiny bit of something - and that would ruin it wouldn't it? Does it have to be two whole months with no slips at all? Other low carb diets I've tried have been a bit like that, one day off it and you're back to square one. I think I might just end up staying in alone and resenting it. But if I really did lose the belly fat and kick my sugar addiction and reverse the pre-diabetes signs I think I am getting, then maybe I wouldn't mind so much. I just feel a bit low on motivation when I think of the long term. Two months doesn't sound so bad if I can be a bit more relaxed after that, but even finding two clear months where I can resist everything would be hard.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 29/01/2016 21:33

If you actually need to do this, as in you are diabetic or have pre-diabetic raised blood sugar, you have the opportunity of saving your life/greatly increasing the quality of your life in the future by making the sacrifice of a strict diet for eight weeks. And a less strict one afterwards.

Diabetes is not pleasant and I think 8 weeks of saying no thanks at birthday parties is an awful lot better than a lifetime of medication and illness.

CloudsAway · 29/01/2016 21:44

Yes you're right. I know I should just do it, hole up for a couple of months and stay away from people, which would make it easier. I get so few opportunities to see people anyway (work at home, live alone, don't know many people) that I am usually desperate for the opportunities I get, but they all end up with some food involved. And it's easier just to not have the chance to succumb, especially if it's one-slip-and-you've-ruined-it! Just hard to get the motivation. But I can keep thinking that it is better than being ill for a lifetime!! And maybe that will kick me into doing it.

IguanaTail · 29/01/2016 22:09

I've lost nearly 5 pounds in 4 days and I've had a tiny bar of dark chocolate, a couple of biscuits and a glass of wine in addition to everything else being on the plan.

I actually feel like I might be able to shift this weight. I'm actually enjoying feeling really really hungry for my lunch and then finding it ten times more delicious.

Clouds the book has a chap who keeps photos of amputees on his laptop to prevent him straying

ivy I read all Prof Taylor's technical papers a year ago, plus Mosely's book after Xmas.
The history is a fascinating success story how Taylor developed new science that goes against old practice.
If the ongoing large scale 5-year study works out and people in rl continue to have success, I think he has a good chance of the Nobel prize in a few years. So many millions of people worldwide suffer from T2.

Taylor found the improvement in blood sugar started with the fasting before surgery. He judged that 800 cals daily of shakes and veg would duplicate the conditions of semi-fasting and rapid weight loss that people had with bariatric surgery.

Diabetes Uk funded a small human trial for Taylor to try out his theory. His team were able to MRI the subjects and prove that the fat in their liver & pancreas was reduced.
The study was so successful, that his dept at Newcastle published a document online now called something like the "Newcastle Protocol for reversing T2", which defined the original diet.

Many folk read this online and were successful themselves, often with a real food, low carb 800 cals version.

Mosely's book, written with Taylor's advice, builds on the study and also incorporates low carb and Mediteranean, both known to help t2, to make the BSD a real food LC Mediteranean diet.
Understandably Taylor is happy to collaborate with Mosely, who has the gift of popularising science-based diets, so far more people will try BSD than would ever read the dry Newcastle Protocol.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/01/2016 00:13

If you like science, this is his lecture Twin Cycle Hypothesis to explain and reverse T2

spababe · 30/01/2016 09:01

Having lost 6lb the first week, I have 'only' lost 2lb the second week. I am disappointed as I have stuck to the recipes in the book and tried hard. I was hoping for 4-5lb as the book says people lost an average of 22lb in the 4 weeks. Hoping for a good loss next week. Anyone else seeing a slower loss?

Obs2016 · 30/01/2016 11:38

I haven't lost much. 3lbs the first week, haven't weighed this week.
Maybe I'm not being strict enough? I did have a Diet Coke.
I haven't done hardly any exercise other than walking ds2 to school a couple of times.
Maybe I need to be stricter?

Obs2016 · 30/01/2016 11:39

Oh and I haven't felt hungry. Maybe that's where I'm going wrong and my portions are too big?

IguanaTail · 30/01/2016 12:38

I think Greek yogurt is the secret weapon. So so filling. And you can have it instead of mayo.

ivykaty44 · 30/01/2016 13:21

I had a two egg omelette today with smoked salmon trimmings and a large grilled mushroom, cucumber and tomoto - it was delicious.

Just had celery and garlic soup for lunch

Not sure what to cook for supper, probably do chicken and lentils but use lemons and have put lentils and broccoli with it.

Need to cook some soup and vegetable casserole up for next week, if I have it all in the fridge ready its easy to get through the week.

Laska5772 · 30/01/2016 15:08

I was another lb down this morning !! .

The skinny chilli last night was delicious and I stayed away from the wine .. it helped that DH also didnt have any out of solidarity (he is a treasure that one)

Tonight i'm going to do stuffed mushrooms with white beans parsley and garlic spinach and a little chorizo and feta on top with tomato sauce

There are a couple of Ottelenghi recipes in the Guardian today , which I think would be fine.. especially the three chilli fish (leaving out the sugar which i'm sure isnt m needed at all ) and the Roast cauliflower and chickpeas with warm tahini yoghurt

Laska5772 · 30/01/2016 15:11

Egg and spinach omlette this morning , followed by a long walk weve just come back from,

Im just about to have a mug of miso and then i have to make a fruit cake (but not for me Sad)

yumyumpoppycat · 30/01/2016 15:34

Ivy my food today has been almost identical omelette and salad for for breaky and soup for lunch.

Stay strong Laska!! Maybe get someone else to take the cake out of the oven though {drools at thought of freshly baked cake} Ps I have just remembered we both used to do EVIL GILLIAN!! mwahaha

Obs - there is a reference to someone with type 1 not doing well on the diet, I think they moved either to the mediterranean diet or to the version of only counting on two days, I am not sure. I have it on a kindle phone app and not handy for referring to things, wish I had the paperback.

Would it be worth trying something like these reduced fast day meals ideal world just for a week that way you can rule out overestimating calories and know that perhaps the diet is not for you? You would need to add veg and perhaps scrambled eggs for breakfast. I have just bought some to have on standby as they are long life and might be quite handy. To be totally honest though they look rather liquidy and unappetising so I will need to eat some and report back!!

I am another 0.8lb down today despite a trip to pizza express and night at theatre so pretty pleased, fingers crossed I don't pay for saying so tomorrow, but I was really pretty sensible {passes round the sparkling water} and may even have been under 800 {shines wonkey halo}

yumyumpoppycat · 30/01/2016 15:43

Actually the recent reviews for those meals are all one star so maybe give them a miss!!

Obs2016 · 30/01/2016 16:06

Poppycat - does it says why the t1 didn't get on do well?

yumyumpoppycat · 30/01/2016 16:19

I think because the condition isn't caused by excess liver fat?

Obs2016 · 30/01/2016 16:33

I see. Yes.

Obs2016 · 30/01/2016 16:35

Ok I just weighed myself.
Gone from:
11 - 7
11 - 4
10 - 13

Is that 8 lbs? Is that good?
I think I've been at it for 3 weeks. Doesn't sound like very much, does it?

Obs2016 · 30/01/2016 16:36

3 weeks not stringently!!

Obs2016 · 30/01/2016 16:40

Or it's more like 2 weeks to be honest. Although I was 'aware ' since NYE, started cutting down then , a little bit, but did have a couple of meet ups with friends for a curry and a bottle of wine.
I have been drinking 1.5 litres of water and having lemon and ginger in hot water, most days.
