Just wondering if anyone has tried this and how it went? I am about ten days in and coping well so far.

I have been low carbing for years on and off, and on 5:2 since Sept which seems to make the fasting easier.

On the PC MFP click on the meal you want to add the pretend calories to (snacks maybe) select quick tools, select quick add calories, enter in enough calories (in theory 400) to bring your total up to 1200/ you could even rename the meal 'uneaten calories' so you can keep track of what you really had that day.

yumyumpoppycat · 02/03/2016 21:55

PS I didn't answer the first question as I don't think I have managed to get to a target weight since I had children.

yumyumpoppycat · 02/03/2016 22:08

Actually MFP doesnt allow the 8 week blood suagr diet as it is against their guidelines and a thread about it was closed down community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10331884/8-week-blood-sugar-diet. Obviously this doesn't stop us using it MFP.

Laska5772 · 02/03/2016 22:54

one day the diet industry will catch up with the latest research , (oh but no its not in its interest to do so.. just keep on eating those 'healthy carbs' and avoid fat to get thin folks, and you'll keep us in profit selling you the latest diet foods)Wink

However if you log MFP on the app on your phone it does give you the 'in 5 weeks' weight for 800 cals.. (whilst telling you , that you are eating too little!..)
I just dont bother to click , the 'finished' tab each day .. Mine is linked into my fitbit and that shows weight loss stats no problem ..

But being linked in just makes MFP want me to eat more calories as it adds those for exercise onto my daily total! ...

..but its still a good tool for tracking what you eat i think..

lorelei9 · 02/03/2016 23:37

Half way through the book
Not sure to be hinest
Will be interested to see how posters here get on over the full 8 weeks
I must admit atm it looks to me like unsustainable VLCD but officially they allow less than 800 I think?

yumyumpoppycat · 02/03/2016 23:46

Defo Laska, I felt bad actually as I was reading a Diabetes charity response to this type of diet and they welcomed the findings but cant recommend VLC diet without medical supervision, the sceptical part of me raised my eyebrows at this!

It makes sense though for MFP to be cautious around eating disorders and it does look like the paid format of MFP is more fasting/5:2 friendly now - they banned discussion of 5:2 at first too. It is funny though how the blood sugar diet is dismissed out of hand by so many of the people on that thread I linked to.

MFP apps must vary from phone to phone, mine is android and don't think it predicts weight loss for me if I am at the 800? I mentioned before MFP drains my battery so fast does anyone else have this, all that aside I think MFP is brilliant and really fast once you get into it.

yumyumpoppycat · 02/03/2016 23:50

Lorlei there is a maintenance plan given. The daily 800 is just for 8 weeks or sooner if goal is reached, then it's reduced to 800 2 x a week for continued weight loss, then it's a case of following the low carb mediterranean diet for maintenance.

lorelei9 · 03/03/2016 04:12

Yum, I know there's a maintenance plan but I was wondering how easy it is to maintain for 8 weeks...

ErnesttheBavarian · 03/03/2016 06:47

I've gained another .2 Angry I don't reckon in 8 weeks I will have lost these stupid 5 kilos.

Seriously. I am becoming disheartened. What else can I do?

Not2bObvious · 03/03/2016 06:50

When I look at what I get to eat for 800 calories, it's not that much less than I would have eaten for 1400! And on 1400 I lost about 2lb a month as over weekends I could go up to 3000 with drink & treats woof woof
Because I've no bread/pasta/sweet stuff what I'm left with is pretty good unprocessed food - just not tonnes of it. My main hunger time is after dinner & that's more a want for something nice which is my very vocal not so inner fat girl whining. Well last night after making a small dish of full fat Greek yogurt with nuts, a slice of mature cheddar and a few more unsalted nuts, I decided bed was the safest place for me! My hungers mainly in my head, not my body. I believe the most I can eat without gaining weight over time is 1500-1600 a day, I'm managing around 800-1000 this last couple of weeks. I actually believe for the 1st time I'll lose this weight. Haven't felt that so sincerely ever and I've been dieting since I was 12 (now 41)
I hope those watching with interest enjoy the show 😁

Obs2016 · 03/03/2016 07:42

Right. I am doing really badly Sad
I feel totally deflated.

Started beginning of Jan, (not always strictly!!) I lost 8lbs in 3 weeks.
Then first week of Feb I had a chest infection and ate practically nothing. Thus in total I had lost a stone. Great.

Since then I had a couple of lapses - a few bottles of wine. But.... I promised I'd be strict and I thought I was being :
yoghurt and blueberries in the morning ; plain salad with a tiny bit of ham for lunch; courgetti Bolognese in evening.

A couple of minor cheats - a few Pringles. Once or twice I was diabetically low so had to drink Lucozade, which of course is pure sugar. but, I also decided to take the opportunity to eat a chocolate biscuit a classic biscuit at the same time - bit naughty admittedly.

But I thought I was doing ok.

Obviously not.

Because it's only just dawned on me that we are actually into March!!

So in the last 3 weeks I have lost nothing and I have now been doing this for 2 months. As Mosley recommendeds, so I should be finishing/moving to maintenance.

But I have another stone to go!

I lost a stone in the first month and nothing since. Not good.

so, in the last 3 weeks, I thought I was being really good - obviously not.

now I'm not quite sure what to do next?

Sad Angry

Obs2016 · 03/03/2016 07:44

Oh. And I'm not hungry. I haven't been hungry anytime the last two months. maybe that's where I'm going wrong because my portion sizes too large?

Elvish · 03/03/2016 07:46

I agree Not2b, I'm eating reasonable portions and cutting out snacks and carbs. I'm not hungry and in 10 days I've not gone over 900 on any day, so I think I'll manage to do 8 weeks at this level. For me the key has been eating a reasonable amount of beans, which are filling and keep my fibre intake up (so no constipation).

Not2bObvious · 03/03/2016 07:51

Ernest, remind me how long are you doing this, what had you lost so far? I feel your pain, those 2 gains really hacked me off. Without wanting to bore the arse off you saying this again, I believe my gain was whatever I'd put in my body that hadn't left. After resolving that, today's weigh in showed another pound down. But if you were to look at in a graph, I'm up/down/flat line. Weight loss is rarely linear. If you're bunged up and natural things aren't working, take a senokot or dulcolax. If you're not, up your water and avoid the scales for 3 days. If you make it into your enemy you might find yourself at the bottom of a bag of chips with a large bar of choc for afters washed down by 10 pints of scrumpy - obv exaggerating for comic purposes, I'd NEVER do something like that replace all those things with 6 pack of crisps, 2 double deckers and a bottle of white for me

Cheby · 03/03/2016 07:58

Sorry you're disheartened Ernest. Is it likely to be water retention or constipation issues causing it? Are you weighing yourself at the same time every morning?

Not2bObvious I'm finding similar about hunger and the amounts you can eat. I am finding this a really good way to reeducate myself about portion sizes. I'm also starting CBT in two weeks so I'm hoping that will help me on the emotional eating/habit side of things.

Obs2016 · 03/03/2016 08:03

Laughing at Not2.

Grin

I drank 2 small bottles of rose wine and ate a whole packet of bacon frazzles.

Oh yes, that was 2/3 weeks ago.
Maybe that explains my non loss for the last 3 weeks.
Wink

ErnesttheBavarian · 03/03/2016 10:02

I started this a week last Monday, so 11 days. I wa 59.9 and am now 58.6. So 1.3 k in 11 days. On Saturday I was 58. So in 5 days I have gained over half a kilo on 800 cals per day. How is that even possible?AngryConfused

Think I'm over the constipation so genuinely don't understand bit while I am still determined and motivated I want to work out what else I can do before I give up.

I am suffering from fatigue. Not new and not diet related. I am making sue I get the at least 10k steps per day.

OttiliaVonBCup · 03/03/2016 10:14

Maybe you don't have much to lose Ernest so that's why it goes slower.

It's baffling though.

Sputnik · 03/03/2016 10:26

But if you do the maths Earnest you have a good loss there.

We're told 3500 calories = 1lb of fat, so 7700 =1kg of fat
Therefore 1.3 kgs = 10010 calorie deficit
Over 11 days that's a daily deficit of 910 calories

At so close to your ideal wieght envy your TDEE is quite low. Given a few daily fluctuations that's pretty much in line with what would be predicted.

Sputnik · 03/03/2016 10:27

Oops, that should be an Envy there!

Obs2016 · 03/03/2016 10:30

Ernest, don't lose heart. You and I must not lose heart. we've already done well, we are just in a lull, a plateau, I guess.
lets keep each other going!! Grin

Sputnik · 03/03/2016 10:33

I figure in general if weight loss is going in line with what is predicted by your average daily calorie deficit then the diet is working. If there's a dramatic sudden loss it doesn't - it can't - mean it's all fat. Likewise if there is a long stall doesn't mean you're not losing fat.

I'm stuck as well this week and I know it's hard not to feel discouraged when the scales don't move.

Sputnik · 03/03/2016 10:36

I read that in low carb diets there typically a plateau around week 3.

ErnesttheBavarian · 03/03/2016 15:29

Thanks, I meanm I know I don't have so much to lose and I'm not showing off. I've been trying to lose thses 5 or so kilos forever. If I was just slowly moving in 1 direction that would also be ok. But being .6 higher today than on Saturday and I didn't even go wild as I planned to on SUnday, well it's just a big steaming bag of crap, isn't it? So there.

Maybe I should do shit loads more exercise or something but I am just too tired.

Sputnik especially you are a mathematical star. So, how long for 5 kilos? (Too tired and thick to think).

Anyway, hope everyone has had a good day. I am still stuffed from school dinners. Very light dinner for me tonight.

Sputnik · 03/03/2016 16:14

Well if my calculations are correct 5kgs of fat is a deficit of 38500cals.
If you're average daily deficit was 1000 cals (not easy) that would be 38.5 days or 5.5 weeks.
I just have a calculator!

Did you figure out your daily energy expenditure?
