Just wondering if anyone has tried this and how it went? I am about ten days in and coping well so far.

I have been low carbing for years on and off, and on 5:2 since Sept which seems to make the fasting easier.

Don't be disheartened Obs, my weight was stuck for a week last week but has come down a couple of lbs the last couple of days ...however the scales are not telling the whole story I think my arms and legs look slimmer, my coat was roomy today and a dress which I impulse bought and have never worn as too tight is on the brink of being too baggy!! Also on the blood sugar diet website a few people have also not lost as much weight as they would have expected. PLUS on bootcamp and some of the VLC diet threads there are a couple of notorious weeks where weightloss can slow down then start to come off again more consistently but more slowly than the first .

Obs2016 · 14/02/2016 19:54

Thank you yummy.
I have prepared all meals for tomorrow:
Yoghurt and blueberries
Salad
Huge batch of spag Bol, with 2x courgettes ready to peel.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 14/02/2016 20:01

Well, I don't think lentils are really my thing! Just had a Jamie Oliver lentil pack and was not overly impressed but I WANT to like them!

Any easy recipes for a not so keen lentil eater? I know they are good for me and good on this diet. I am finding my tastes are changing and also the amount I eat has reduced so would like to be able to make a little amount and not use a packet.

(Anything that combines with the Instant Pot would be even better, having just bought one of those)

yumyumpoppycat · 14/02/2016 22:27

Hmm, soft red lentils work really well in pasta sauce but I seem keener than everyone else in my family!

Not quite the same as a one pot {just googled!} but one of my most successful slow cooker recipes was spanish chicken, can't remember the exact recipes but think it was passata, olives onions chicken joints etc, only prob was that all the meat fell off the bone so you have to watch out for that or use boneless joints. If I do the recipe at any point I will calculate the cals and post it.

Breadandwine · 14/02/2016 22:50

Here's a popular recipe for lentils and rice with cabbage and mushrooms.

For the BSD I'd double the lentils and leave out the rice. It's very tasty - but then, I love anything with lentils.

As an aside, if you're just adding lentils to bulk out a stew or similar, red lentils are the way to go - they just thicken the dish and sort of disappear.

If you're wishing to substitute, say, lentils for mince, then go for green or brown lentils, as they retain their shape and a (soft) consistency.

Hello all,
After a blow out weekend I am fully on the wagon this morning and raring to go. Having said that I did forget to Weigh in.
I was up with a committing bug over night though so am going to be gentle on myself if I don't quite stick to 800 cals.

Is there a goal amount of carbs we want to stick to at all? I'm used to no nuts milk etc so I want to make sure I don't over do it.

Sounds like there's been some amazing losses on this thread.

I'm def heading towards T2D if I don't do something. My mum and Nan both have had it and my sister looks like she has too.
I am 40 this year and I'm going to turn this all around.

Yddraigoldragon · 15/02/2016 10:34

I use the instant pot to pre cook chickpeas, cannelini beans etc, two mins high pressure then they are used as if they were soaked overnight. I try to chuck some in most things I make and reduce the amount of meat.

So using pressure cooker or instant pot I brown meat in olive oil, a few oxo cubes in water and top up to say 600 cals x 2 with veggies and beans/lentils.

I have two meals a day, brunch is either eggy or yoghurt based to 200 cals. DH does 5:2 and on fast days has just one meal of 600 or so cals.

Not totally convinced that a big meal at night is the way to go but weight is reducing (21lb) and blood sugar consistently 6.5 or less so something is working.

As a bit of an aside I was getting a bit grumpy reading the stories in the book about people losing 40 odd lbs on this diet, so I gave my head a wobble and looked back at my records. I was diagnosed as T2 in Aug 2013, have lost altogether 61lb or 4st 5lb since then. Slowly in the beginning on low carb, started 5:2 mid 2015 and BSD in Jan 16. Since my last diabetic check in Sept I have lost 2 st! Given that there was a holiday and Christmas in there that is not bad. Grin

Hope you feel ok Moo!

Yddraigoldragon · 15/02/2016 13:46

yumyumpoppycat · 15/02/2016 18:45

Wow that is amazing! had some lentils today prompted by this thread Grin

Laska5772 · 15/02/2016 19:42

Brilliant stats YDDragon well done!

Hi again. I'm still around but had to go away unexpectedly for family reasons at the end of last week and over the weekend. This meant I couldnt track my diet or the calories I was eating ,nor exercise either (and I forgot my fitbit in the rush to go ) , but I did make sure I ate really carefully all weekend , was pleased to find I was am another pound down this morning (when i could weigh again), so thats 11 lbs now in 3 weeks (am really really pleased with that).

Yum Yum , reckon it wil be a while before I attempt Jillian level 2! ( but ill try and do L1 again tomorrow evening)

yumyumpoppycat · 15/02/2016 19:52

Wow Laska great to lose a lb in those circs {gives a hi five}

mootime · 15/02/2016 20:43

21lb since Jan is incredible!

I'm at the end of day one and am checking in at 820 cals. I'll have a buttermint tea before bed, then that's me.

I'm going to try to cut out my milk consumption as that was 150 of my cals today which seems a total waste!

Yddraigoldragon · 15/02/2016 21:49

Grin but what is butter mint tea? Sounds lovely!

littlbrowndog · 15/02/2016 21:55

Everybody doing so well
Will end 4th week on Wednesday and so far lost 23 lbs, slowed down a bit now. But clothes looser and feel a lot more energetic
Must cut out the milk as well although it's lactofree but don't know if that makes a difference
God I no longer lounge about on the settee scoffing on the family pack of revels cos they are such a bargain !
Best thing is people are seeing a difference.

littlbrowndog · 15/02/2016 21:57

Now I want butter mint tea as well

yumyumpoppycat · 15/02/2016 22:04

I'm another one who needs to look at milk :( about to have a coffee with milk even though I know I shouldn't grr. pass me the buttermint tea too please Grin

Not2bObvious · 16/02/2016 08:45

Hi all. Can I join pls? Bought/read the book last night. I did 5:2 for over a year a couple of years ago but haven't been able to get back into it no matter how hard I've tried. I gave up alcohol/chocolate/crisps for lent and so far have managed to replace them with jellies/fudge/popcorn/digestive biscuits 😖 I feel rotten, haven't had a decent bowel movement since last Thursday (apologies for tmi) The scales is showing a gain of 5.6 pounds in less than a week although I hope some of it is waste. I want to do this for 4 weeks to bring me up to a holiday, I believe I can do that especially since I'm off the bad stuff for lent - doing this will stop me replacing it with other sugary muck! I like to cook and I see it as a challenge to get the most out of my 800. I am thinking a 5:2 approach as well but more 5 days at 800 and 2 at tdee of 1600 or so. Very excited! Off to make scrambled egg with tomato for breakfast, pea soup for lunch and chilli & basil chicken for dinner with a poached egg.

loulou0987 · 16/02/2016 12:15

This may be a common question but I've done 5:2 and struggled with headaches (despite drinking water ++) does anyone have any suggestions or is this to be expected?? Thinking of switching to longterm 16:8

yumyumpoppycat · 16/02/2016 13:18

Not2Be that sounds like a good plan I have been intending to do that but tend to go over 800 a bit most days so I don't really warrant a properly higher calorie day. I average at 900 a day over a week.

LouLou I was a bit headachey at the start of this diet and usually find that to be the case on a new diet but I feel fine now. Apparently it's important to keep hydrated to stop the headaches. Someone mentioned being thirsty at first on this diet and that it had subsided now and this is the case for me too so hopefully the more consistent calories means your body will adjust after a couple of days and you won't experience headaches after that?

yumyumpoppycat · 16/02/2016 13:54

Sorry just to add I feel a lot better on this diet, I def had more rough days with 5:2. The 800cals allows more flexibility and def some more milk calories so less likely to have caffeine withdrawal, the more consistent 'healthy eating' and avoidance of sugar etc is better for me too than the 'eat it tomorrow' ethos which 5:2 had when I was trying it a few years ago.

mootime · 16/02/2016 15:44

Buttermint tea is a genius twining a invention. As is gingerbread tea! Both calorie and carb free!
Have stupidly eaten some dim sum today, misread the label and they had loads of carbs but that with some soup for lunch has still only got me to 400 cals. (I should have known really!!)
So I'm not going to loose hope, just stick to my 800 cals and try better with the carbs tomorrow.

Not2bObvious · 16/02/2016 18:13

Day 1 done - kitchen closed (feel a bit scared about that tbh) Just under 800, have a slight headache but that could be furrowing my brow planning my food 😁 Strange trying to avoid carbs & sugar - ooh I love a new plan!

BigChocFrenzy · 17/02/2016 01:06

Congrats on your SV, Laska, yddragon Great progress

Visceral fat: I totally agree with Suzanne that everyone should aim to keep this low for good health - regardless of whether they have T1, T2, healthy insulin metabolism, whatever.

For headaches, same tip as for 5:2
Have a teasp of Marmite (no bread) or a tbsp of unsweetened soy sauce. This replenishes the salt & other minerals that you lose with the very reduced food & the extra water.

Milk:
I recommend replacing milk with unsweetened almond milk, which has only 2 cals for 100 ml, almost zero carbs.

Daily carb limit
Mosely & Prof Taylor specify what to eat and what to cut out, but don't give a carb aim.
Since they emphasise BSD is low carb
. I'd recommend 100g as a maximum daily limit on maintenance
. I'd aim nearer 50g in the 800 cal weight loss phase, or on the FDs for those doing 5:2 BSD.

The weight loss & metabolic improvements described in the book are probably only feasible if you strictly follow the BSD and totally cut out starches - grains, bread, baked goods, crisps, rice etc - and alcohol.

If you are not quite that strict, but at least average below 1000 cals, you should still lose 2-3 lb per week (estimating from online reports & your probable calorie deficit)

Obs2016 · 17/02/2016 08:33

Well done dragon and Laska.
