Just wondering if anyone has tried this and how it went? I am about ten days in and coping well so far.

I have been low carbing for years on and off, and on 5:2 since Sept which seems to make the fasting easier.

Has anyone else checked the recipes in the book on MFP? The calories are underestimated in the book for most of the recipes especially those involving nuts. eg I made the grapefruit salad today with cheddar and MFP made it 383 cals so overall I think I am eating more like 1000 cals not 800 and I am simply following the meal plan in the book.

Hi all

Can I join in here

Have been on the diet for 3 weeks and so far lost 20lbs which is best I have ever done on a diet

Like the food and the thirst has gone
Also upped my exercise and done a lot more walking
Hope the cal count in the book is not wrong as I am also following the recipes

spababe · 12/02/2016 16:31

wow little that is fab - I've done 3.5 weeks now and lost 11lb but not really been fully on it this week due to family birthdays and meals out

littlbrowndog · 12/02/2016 17:17

11 lbs is great as well, it is hard when going out but luckily the jan birthdays are over and turning down invites to pub !

BigChocFrenzy · 12/02/2016 17:49

20lb is excellent, browndog Sounds like you are doing the BSD perfectly well, regardless of exact cals.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/02/2016 17:52

11lb is good, spababe If you've had social occasions then you may have overshot quite a bit

BigChocFrenzy · 12/02/2016 17:54

calorie counts are always approximate because of different brands, sources etc of food

yumyumpoppycat · 12/02/2016 19:27

Hi to all the new people on the thread amazing weightloses well done. Yes my thirst has gone too - how weird, that must be a thing!

We are having a bit of a late dinner here roasted veg, small amount of qunoa and miso gravy, just bubbling away.

Have exercised today and did shred level 2 yest - blimey I thought it was easier than level 1 but I was wrong! Good work laska on doing shred when you didn't
fancy it Star

I have finally shifted down a proper 1lb rather than up and downing the same 1lb,

Obs2016 · 12/02/2016 20:40

Well done you two on the 20 and 11 lb.
really good.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/02/2016 21:07

Well done, everyone
Remember, DrM recommends 2l daily water & hot drinks. Get glugging !

littlbrowndog · 12/02/2016 22:31

Had the fish stew tonight and was lovely But instead of celeriac mash had cauliflower mash which worked just as well
Have had the bolognaise with cauliflower rice and curry with cauliflower rice which is good
Courgetti is good even just raw if in hurry and some sauce on it
I also got a Fitbit one which is tiny and fits in bra and try to get 10000 steps in as sit at desk all day. So now get up every thirty minutes and wander off
I really want to do this for my health as sure I was heading towards T2 so that's been my motivation

Will keep drinking the water. Just can't stray far from a toilet !

Nice to have support. It really helps

BigChocFrenzy · 13/02/2016 07:21

That would be an excellent new habit, to avoid prolonged sitting, brown dog
It's tough that our modern working life & leisure is mostly sitting, which unfortunately increases risk of weight gain & health issues like T2.
Drinking lots of water increases loo walks too, so win-win Wink

Obs2016 · 13/02/2016 09:03

I find drinking the water easy at work, just drink and fill the bottle again. At home it's harder. Wonder why that is?

yumyumpoppycat · 13/02/2016 15:32

I am planning to make oopsie rolls to eat for breakfast, there are some seriously yummy oopsie roll options, lasagne, waffles, cheesey bread sticks etc margeburkell.com/21-unexpected-ways-to-make-oopsie-rolls/

Obs2016 · 14/02/2016 09:56

I haven't lost any weight. I clearly haven't been strict enough. But I knew that, a few sausages, chips, and crisps, was clearly not good.

Dh is really struggling with breakfast ideas. It's all very well if you've got 1/2 and hour to make ..... Scrambled eggs and frittatas etc, but he doesn't.
I need to be able to prep us both something the night before that we both can just grab.
We can't only eat youghurt and blueberries!!

Any suggestions please?

Breadandwine · 14/02/2016 10:20

Do you really need breakfast? I thought I had to have it until I was required to do a fasting blood test, which meant I couldn't eat until later in the morning. And I didn't faint or fall over! Shock

Most people doing the 5:2 gravitate to doing without breakfast - by having it later and later in the morning. Then eventually giving it up altogether.

spababe · 14/02/2016 10:21

Cold omelette would be good or hard boiled eggs?
The cottage cheese ideas could be made the night before as well. We had cottage cheese pear and walnuts for breakfast.

KnockMeDown · 14/02/2016 12:29

I have yogurt and blueberries every morning and love it. I couldn't go without breakfast, though, and on fast days just forego my evening meal. I find this easier, and actually quite liberating.

I decided that the hard core BSD would be too much for me, so am low carbing with the Mediterranean emphasis, and doing the 5:2 also. So far I've lost 5kg, so not bad !

Obs2016 · 14/02/2016 13:34

Pasta. Zero carbs. Juroat. Made from organic Konica flour and oat fibre. Hailed as ultimate diet food- named highly commended weight management product 2016.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/02/2016 15:59

Obs Some like those noodles; some find them slimy & fishy - see what you think.
From DrM's 4-week plan: Share an avocado and a tin of tuna with your OH, v quick meal.

The 800 daily version of the BSD is a VLCD, not intended to be sustainable longterm.

It is intended for those with / or heading towards T2 AND who can grit their teeth and restrict both the type & amount of food for 8 weeks.
So, a minority of those who want to lose weight.

Maybe try the 5:2 BSD, or even BSD maintenance until you get used to low carb ?

BigChocFrenzy · 14/02/2016 16:06

Not losing is obv disappointing for you, but most folk (especially women) have to be quite strict on the BSD to see the dramatic weight loss and metabolic changes that Dr M and Prof Taylor reported.

Starchy food (& alcohol), especially junk like crisps & choc, would slow down weight loss, because they hinder burning visceral fat.
Also, it will not improve insulin metabolism as much

However, on around 800 cals daily on any diet, you should still lose weight quite quickly, if you have excess bodyfat.
i.e. you almost certainly exceeding the 800 by rather a lot.

So, I recommend you mfp, measure & weigh absolutely everything, preferably to help plan meals for the day in advance.
Even if you must log what you eat, this may show you are on say 1500

Obs2016 · 14/02/2016 16:21

Yes bigchoc thank you. Although remember, as a type 1, it isn't visceral fat that is the issue for me, as molesley says himself.

suzannecaravaggio · 14/02/2016 17:50

I thought it was widely accepted that T2D is associated with fat in the viscera (specifically the liver and pancreas) ?

suzannecaravaggio · 14/02/2016 17:51

(ignore that...I see you said type 1)

suzannecaravaggio · 14/02/2016 17:58

although generally speaking I guess we should all be concerned about visceral fat!
Afaik it is correlated with various other health problems and the shape of modern humans does seem to be shifting towards the 'lean arms and legs-large torso' phenotype
