The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

I just made one nelly on an excel type spreadsheet.

Not2bObvious · 03/03/2014 17:44

I'm already lost and it's a brand new thread! 127 replies in 1 day, wowser, we'll be in a thread a week soonWink
Managed my very first FD til dinner time - which I had to have a little bit early but it's still a major victory for me! I have been off the chart eating since my low of Friday week ago, 12 pound up over 10 days, is there a devastated face I could use? I know it's not a true 12 pound but it's easily a good 5-6 pound. Oh dear what a mess. Anyway, it'll take me 2 weeks to get back on track, and once I get there I have to not ricochet back again. Just confessing, pls ignore, just getting it out of my system.
Eh womble, you sure you need to try lose weight? You look great in your pic! I second/third/fourth all those about Adf, maybe just try a week or 2 of 5:2? Might knock the binging on the head(and if you have already and I missed it, apologies)

Tiredemma · 03/03/2014 18:33

Bit of an easy FD here (considering I normally have problems with them!!)

Back at work today after maternity leave and had zilch time to eat- just about to have some cottage pie for dinner after just taking in water all day.

almostthereagain · 03/03/2014 18:38

Thanks bigchoc Thanks It says 25%bf, in healthy zone! Still feel I need something to aim for now the hol has been to keep my motivation. Being healthy is all v well but I need to see a number on scalesHmmGrin
Not2 Well done on your first complete fast, yay! You'll soon shift those extras, as you said can't possibly be fat, a bit of clean eating will make all the differenceSmile

BigChocFrenzy · 03/03/2014 18:44

Well done, Not2b, You've taken the 1st step and you'll soon correct that accidental detour over the last 10 days.
A few dumps & wees and half will be gone anyway.

Wombles I hadn't realised you are BFing.
Shock
If you are determined to ADF, then at least follow Varady's rules:
1000 cals for BF FDs .
That might reduce your NFD bingeing. No wonder you are ravenous, having to feed 2 folk on 500 cals, while also exercising intensely.

Alternate day starving & bingeing may damage your health.
Also, too much stress works like too much calorie restriction: your bod might go into starvation mode.

OP posts:
CiderwithBuda · 03/03/2014 18:44

Wombles! You look great. Ok you hate your love handles but they are fixable. You have yourself on a very strict regime for someone who I would kills to look like! Grin

FD gone well here so far. A hard boiled egg this morning after a walk. Two slices of ham around 2. Have just had a piece of smoked cod and a pile of stir fried veg. Just under 500 cals.

akarucker · 03/03/2014 18:53

I wanted to go a month without weighing myself (used to be a daily weigher), but I caved this morning. So first week (back) on 5:2. Weighed in last Monday morning. Had FD on MON & FRI last week. Weighed in this morning and lost a big fat ZERO!! Third FD today so I know if I weigh in tomorrow morning it'll probably show a loss, but shouldn't this morning's weight show the 'real loss' given that my first weigh in was before I had done any FD?

Urgh, many months ago I almost considered myself a pro at this. Lost my mojo and now disheartened that my first week I've lost nowt :(

FabBakerGirl · 03/03/2014 18:54

Fillybuster - thank for the vanilla tea idea. I don't drink tea but that sounds like something I would like.

I think I have PMT today though it isn't all me. DD is being a PITA and I am just so tired with it being a FD and not sleeping very well at the moment due to head full of worries. A few weeks ago I was in hospital with it all so any suggestions (other than rescue remedy as not sure it really helped me before) would be great. Thank you.

I love Wensleydale on toast but sometimes my body doesn't like bread and I feel like I have something stuck in my throat.

Hi Eatriskier.

In other news DD got her first choice for schools. She might even live long enough to go.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/03/2014 18:55

Almost Well done, you are in the healthy zone. That's great, you have reduced your risk factors for a lot of nasty conditions & diseases in later years.

Suggestion:
If you want a goal, why not try to get into the "fit" zone.
You could play around with the calculator to find what waist measurement to aim for, to achieve this, with the same weight. This means lose fat and gain muscle.
I suggest this, because increasing % muscle is just as important for longevity as reducing % fat. I must post that science ref soon.

aka I only ever pay attention to a post-fast weigh in - I don't want to weigh the meals I ate on Sunday or the poo in my bowels. Friday is after my second fast, usually I've been eating healthily during the week so will have my most 'true' weigh in - less food and less water retention due to eating salted and sugary/carby foods at the weekend when I allow myself to eat less healthily.

Why is a body full of undigested food and possible water retention a better indicator of my true weight?

You may well have lost something aka but you're weighing your Sunday roast and pudding today (if that's what you had anyway!)

Not2bObvious · 03/03/2014 19:04

Aka you weighed in after 2 nfd's???? No no no no no (you get what I'm saying? It's noGrin)
Tomorrow I bet you'll see at least a pound - or better still hang out til the day after your second FD, you'll soo see a drop.
Thanks guys for congrats on proper fast and scales already 2.2 pound better this evening than tomorrow. I'm heading off to boxercise in 40 mins, have had 350 cals, have 150 left for when I get home or maybe I'll just shower and head to bed! That would be a true triumphWink

MazzleDazzle · 03/03/2014 19:05

Well after an all round shitty afternoon, largely due to my DH behaving like a spoilt drama queen, I have just eaten 3 Rice Krispie cereal bars and it's a FD. However, my mini-scoff takes me to a total of 499 cals. A successful FD? In some ways, yes. Do I regret the 3 Rice Krispie bars? No!

I'm in a foul mood Angry. Anyway, kitchen's closed. Hopefully things will look brighter here in the morning.

Not2bObvious · 03/03/2014 19:05

2.2 better this evening than this morning, I meant - sorry!

BetsyBell · 03/03/2014 19:06

fab a cheese omelette is a good way of getting that hot, melty, cheese action without the wheaty pain.

FabBakerGirl · 03/03/2014 19:17

I always forget about omelettes. I am definitely going to make one tomorrow.

Made fresh in the morning would they be okay for the kids' packed lunches given they aren't kept in a fridge?

BetsyBell · 03/03/2014 19:30

I work in a school and lots of children seem to come in with omelette - perfect packed lunch food! You can always invest in some of those little ice packs, or freeze yogurt tubes to defrost (and therefore keep everything else cool) in the lunch pack.

Mmm, I think I might have an omelette for breakfast.

BetsyBell · 03/03/2014 19:31

Daffodil for Mazzle. Hope tomorrow's better x

BetsyBell · 03/03/2014 19:32

Aww, daffodils have gone :(

Flowers for mazzle and anyone who needs some!

DottiestDoris · 03/03/2014 19:35

So zed, did you complicate your day and risk child negligence to weigh yourself? Say yes say yes say yes I NEED to know

BigChocFrenzy · 03/03/2014 19:40

Great advice about when to weigh, Betsy. I was wondering what we should recommend, but your logic sounds just right.

OP posts:
FabBakerGirl · 03/03/2014 19:48

Thanks BetsyBell. I will do omelette at the weekend for the kids to see if they like them first.

Breadandwine · 03/03/2014 19:51

Anybody here want to pile in on this bunfight:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/food_and_recipes/2014013-Perfectly-good-pancakes-made-with-just-s-r-flour-and-water-and-they-cost-1p-each

I tend to forget that the good manners and community spirit evident on these threads doesn't always extend to the rest of Mumsnet!Sad

MrsFlorrick · 03/03/2014 20:00

((((Breadandwine)))) Shock wow. So mean. And you were only recommending cost effective vegan pancakes!! Just wow!

MN can be a great place but you do need to watch out. I deliberately shy away fromAIBU and such. I also hardly ever start threads. Not serious ones anyway.

I'm sorry they were all so vile to you breadandwine. Makes me feel partly pissed off and partly ashamed of womankind.

I guess you just ran into a load if angry sleep deprived hormonals who had yet to put their toddlers to bed (their inner toddles anyway).

Well I liked you recipe. Friend has two sons with multiple allergies inc dairy for both and egg for they other. And she always appreciates new ideas. She cooks a lot of vegan because of it (one is egg, dairy, soy and fish allergic and the other just fairy).

BetsyBell · 03/03/2014 20:10

What a load of meanies b&w :( It was the food and recipes section not AIBU! I think it's a very helpful recipe if you need to cater for vegan's or allergies.

Are fairies vegan mrsF? Grin

Eatriskier · 03/03/2014 20:25

How horrible some of those were to you b&w. Though I did laugh at the suggestion that flour and water isn't nutritious. I mean the first food we think of when we think nutrition is a pancake Hmm

I'd hate to have a fairy allergy Wink
