Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Sorry MazzleDazzle, if any consolation C on T is rarely worth it.

MazzleDazzle · 03/03/2014 13:40

I'm measuring batfuttocks - lost 48cm in 8 weeks!

My measurements are pretty similar to yours.

Incidentally, my sister lost no weight at all, but is 13cm slimmer in just 4 weeks! So that really goes to show that the scales aren't the most valuable indicator of success.

Mrs F be thankful for the years you looked good in skimpy bikini! Envy

MazzleDazzle · 03/03/2014 13:42

I know Fab, but melty bubbly cheese with a splash of Worcester sauce [drool]. Stop it!

Ho hum, Bovril here I come...

zedzedzed · 03/03/2014 13:43

Balls!
Cheese on toast is totally worth it to me fab.....but just not today let's enjoy it tomorrow when it'll taste even better (and we may only have one or two bits instead of 6!).

I think as long as any accidental munchies that fall into our gubs on FDs are under 50cals we can still call it a full fd and have only 450 for dinner and claim a FD victory, as long as we close the kitchen after dinner.

5hrs till dinner. Tea! TEA!! TEA!!

Megrim · 03/03/2014 13:50

I'm going for an 18lb loss for zed.

No pressure Grin

8 mile walk done this morning, saw several herons on the river (didn't spot any salmon though) and lots of frogs doing what frogs do in the spring in the big boggy puddles at the side of the path.

FabBakerGirl · 03/03/2014 13:53

No mice.

Cat being naughty. Ran off, I told him to come here.

And then counted him when he didn't...

Off to be a grown up now.

Miffytastic · 03/03/2014 13:54

Hello all, checking in for what's becoming my normal start to the week - with back to back FDs. Doing OK so far, lots of tea, a clementine and a banana with low fat yogurt. Co op have innocent veg pots on 1/2 price offer so will have one of them for tea with spinach

My trousers don't feel as uncomfortable today, but that could be because they've stretched...!

womblesofwestminster · 03/03/2014 13:56

I finally summoned up the courage to take a profile photo showcasing my lovehandles. But there's a prob - the file size is too big to upload to Mumsnet. Can anyone help? I don't have the software.

TalkinPeace · 03/03/2014 13:56

use irfanview to shrink it ....

LadyMacmuff · 03/03/2014 13:57

Hello all. I'm on my first ever FD today (going to try Every Other Day Diet) so marking place and lurking in hope of inspiration! Your intro is incredibly useful BigChoc thank you!

CiderwithBuda · 03/03/2014 13:59

Wow. Busy thread!

Zed - I am agog to know your loss too! Very impressed that you haven't weighed yet and have been doing this for so long.

FD here for me after an indulgent weekend. More indulgent than it should have been. And I didn't count calories. I didn't weigh this morning either so no idea what damage I did to last week's loss.

So far today I have had a few cups of tea with milk and a hard boiled egg. Planning veg stir fry and fish for dinner. Might go and make myself a hot drink.

I'm hoping to fast Mon, Wed and Fri this week. Is that a good or bad idea? I did two fasts last week and found it ok although they were both 600 cals rather than 500. I thought I would try three this week and see how it goes.

My TDEE is 1976 set at sedentary. Was thinking of aiming for 1,600 on NFDS in the week and TDEE at weekends.

Fillybuster · 03/03/2014 14:01

Another old-timer checking in for a Monday fast Grin

Zed I think we may need to club together and buy you some home electric scales Wink Truth is, the numbers don't matter anywhere near as much as your frame of mind. Stick with that 'kicking this FDs arse' approach and you'll go far! :) :)

Fab grab a hot drink - check out Pukka tea vanilla chai flavour if you haven't tried them already: they are caffeine free but taste surprisingly sweet, so do a great job of tricking your brain into thinking it has actually eaten something. If you don't have a sweet tooth, the London Tea Company have a brilliant raspberry and chili flavour. And yes, I buy too many herbal teas....

I'm sooo jealous of those with beaches, sunny or otherwise Last summer I wore a bikini for the first time in 8 years: my body is far from perfect but somehow this WoE has also helped me get to a level of self-acceptance and happiness in myself that makes all the difference. I no longer feel like I have to look perfect to strip down on the beach, just know that I'm working on being the best version of myself that I can be.

BsshBossh · 03/03/2014 14:02

I'm on zed-watch....

batfuttocks · 03/03/2014 14:14

Ooh mazzle wow! Have you got similar measurements now or have you lost 48cm from the ones I have (mind boggles).

Just did waist to hip ratio and am high risk for cardiac disease! Just shows BMI is not the be all and end all.
Just done twenty five mins exercise, off to wake a baby. Always feel if I haven't broken the fd by school pick up, I'm home and dry.

Fab: cheese on toast tomorrow. No guilt. Yum.

TalkinPeace · 03/03/2014 14:23

Fillybuster glad to hear you are in the hungry Monday club too !

and welcome newcomers ....

LadyMacMuff I would honestly suggest just fasting two days a week : it makes it easier to not overeat on the other days

Octopus37 · 03/03/2014 14:31

Onwards and downwards. Just eaten Asda Chicken Noodle soup (210 cals). Have Carrot & Coriander soup to eat tonight, in about four and a bit hours. Wont get the chance before then as taking kids to football and not back until after 7. Had a v late lunch for me on purpose, but feel a bit better now. Am going to get some of those nice teas. Weighed in today, decided to make Mondays my weigh in day, two pounds down from last Wednesday. Good luck everyone, we are halfway there.

Eatriskier · 03/03/2014 14:48

Hang on - baking, badly behaved cats, mice hatred - has toffee returned to us as fab?

jenniferlawrence · 03/03/2014 15:22

I'm fasting today too. Week 7 of 5:2. No food yet, just herbal tea. We've got m&s count on us braised steak tonight with extra brocolli. I'm looking forward to it.

Good luck Monday fasters.

MazzleDazzle · 03/03/2014 15:31

I have similar measurements to you now bat! We measure ourselves at 10 points: each upper arms, each calf, each thigh, hips, belly button, bra line, bust.

Workmen are in today plastering walls in the hallway today and as you need to go through the hall to access every room it is a bit of a pain. Went to the bakery to buy they Cake to go with their Brew. The smell near killed me!

DH has set of the smoke alarm using the wallpaper steamer and now it's doing that annoying BLEEP! every 30 secs. Has now been doing it all day. It's connected to the mains, not battery operated. It's driving me mad!

Nothing but 1 black coffee and water so far. Making mushroom soup for later and salmon fillet in soy, ginger, honey, chilli and spring onion with green veg for later. Haven't totted up the cals yet, but I think I'll be safe enough. Should really check now or I'll be disappointed later!

womblesofwestminster · 03/03/2014 15:37

Right guys, Mumsnet are having some technical issues re: uploading profile photos, so while they're sorting that, here's my love handles:

@@@@@@@@CLICK IF YOU DARE@@@@@@@

They are the bane of my life. The worst part of my body. My gym instructor said the only way to shift them is to lose weight.

almostthereagain · 03/03/2014 15:40

May have to rethink today as FD. Dd has got her 1st choice GS & dh has promised her a celebration-she has opted for Pizza Express. This is after a pit stop home where I've already inhaled 2 oatcakes & a mug of tea. Soo hungry todayConfused the wobbly sort that doesn't go away with drinks. I have had a fairly rubbish w/e nutritionally though so let that be a lesson to us all (stern face!)
Glad there's still hope for you in them there skimpies Mrs F stick with JM & I'm sure you'll be having all sorts of unnecessary attention from your dhGrin Really must motivate myself to get back to regular exercise, Big choc I need a bootcamp boot up my wobbly bottomBlush
Will be checking in early for the big weigh in zed no pressure!!

almostthereagain · 03/03/2014 15:45

wombles you look great to me! Not at all what I was expecting after your descriptions, you'll tone up in no time with a bit of dedication. We can daily check in if you like, I certainly need to get on with itSmile

MelanieCheeks · 03/03/2014 15:46

Congrats to Miss Almost!

I think Pizza Express do a Leggerra option, so you could still manage a sort of FD, as long as you dont go for a glass of wine too....

Eatriskier · 03/03/2014 15:48

almost if you're anywhere near as insane as me, you could also order your pizza sans cheese - save a ton of calories

almostthereagain · 03/03/2014 15:54

Thanks melanie she's worked hard & really deserves itSmile
ShockEat Good idea, will try & keep it sensible, will also make tomorrow easier.
