Fasting / 5:2 diet

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

FD here. So far so good. Had an Innocent Tom Yum veg pot for lunch (239cals) and an Nakd banana bread (92cals)

Dinner is roast chicken with asparagus and kale chips for me. And roast potatoes and carrots for the DC and DH. Grin

Mmmmm. Kale chips.....

Didn't do my JM workout yesterday. Too tired.

Had DS in the park this morning and just back. He is snoring in the stroller. He will now wake just in time for me to stick him in the car for the school run. Poor boy.
Beautiful sunshine here. Naice.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/03/2014 14:37

Well done, PrimalLass

Wombles I'm FDing today too.
I have 90 mins boxing & Tabata with the hunks Grin this evening, so won't be home before 11pm.
I can't eat solid food that late, so I'm doing an LOF with RTD low carb shakes.

What are you having ?

Kale chips? Confused

Helliecopter · 12/03/2014 14:49

Just need to share a moment... I've just been in the Cadbury factory shop. On a FD!!!

womblesofwestminster · 12/03/2014 14:55

Does anyone believe this nonsense: Zero Calorie Foods

MrsFlorrick · 12/03/2014 15:10

Errol. Kale chips is the most delish and addictive thing going.

Get yer kale, toss in olive oil and seasoning (either Chinese 5 spice or chilli and salt) spread on baking tray and in the oven on a low 150/160c for 10-12mins

Voila crispy delish kale. Yummy. And addictive. Grin

almostthereagain · 12/03/2014 15:47

Like chinese seaweed at all?
Just had 2 slices of brown toast & marmite, it was AMAZING! Once in a blue moon NFD treat for meGrin Tis rubbish hearing about all that you lot eat, I wish I was tall with a giant TDEE!

PrimalLass · 12/03/2014 15:48

MrsF, your dinner sounds lovely. Do you have asparagus on FD for the same reason as I do? (gets rid of water retention and makes me lighter the next day Blush)

MrsFlorrick · 12/03/2014 16:13

Almost. Yes a bit Chinese seaweedy.

Primal. No. But it's actually a great idea!! Thank you. This was pure coincidence. May make a habit of it now.

Your MN name suggest you eat paleo? Do you? If so I'm very interested to know more.

womblesofwestminster · 12/03/2014 16:51

Why does a large mug of tea fill you up? It's bizarre.

Works every time.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/03/2014 17:44

I outsmarted myself today:

One of my tricks to avoid being tempted by Coke is not to bring in any to work and to only buy (if I must) from the furthest machine, a 10-min round trip with 4 flights of stairs.

OK, I was tempted and walked to the machine, opened my purse .....

and found 2 large notes, several pennies, a paper clip, a button, 2 safety pins and a condom
Grin
The machine accepts none of these. Curses, delivered from temptation !

wombles : I get so annoyed about stuff like that, there are people out in real world that would believe it. And wonder why they don't loose!!!!Angry

Megrim · 12/03/2014 18:05

Woohoo - two NSVs today. Met up with some friends that I usually see in passing (dropping off / picking up at training, meetings etc) and they initially didn't recognise me (and turned out that one of them was 5:2ing and the other one had been recommended to try it by the nurse at her GP's). Then went on for a mooch in TKMaxx and found a muchly reduced Superdry shirt (I'm desperately trying to hang onto my youth) which not only fitted but I could look in the full length mirror without wincing for the first time in years.

beanandspud · 12/03/2014 18:18

Evening!

Wahay! Got on the scales this morning to find that I am 7lbs down after four weeks of 5:2. Couldn't quite believe it as I haven't really restricted much on NFDs. I am quite prepared to admit that it might be a couple of lbs adrift given that I've just done two consecutive FDs but still Grin.

Determined now to keep going for the next four weeks and see what happens. Although I can't keep up with the thread I find it great to hear what everyone else is up to - thank you!

Helliecopter · 12/03/2014 18:50

Some brilliant SVs and NSVs today. Loving it.

Well despite deciding to do a FD tomorrow, I ended up doing it today. It just happened and seemed to fit with my day.

No breakfast, tuna and cottage cheese salad at lunch (168cals) and an apple, and dinner is going to be stuffed roast aubergine with roast red pepper, ham and cheese and salad (207cals). I'll have 40 to play with for some strawberries closer to bedtime. What a winner!

My NSVs are the things I've resisted. Not only have I been in the Cadbury factory shop at the Lowry outlet and bought a bag of mis-shapes for DH, been to costa (sparkling water) and we also went to the park after preschool - Nana bought DD1 and herself ice creams and I had nothing at all! I am really proud of myself. I just found it simple to say no, because I know if I want it, I can have it tomorrow if I really have to have it. Just a few weeks ago I'd have said 'oh go on then' buffs halo
Also wandering round the shops and seeing lovely things but not wanting to buy anything because I'm not happy with my body at the moment was excellent motivation to resist temptation.

Hope everyone else fasting is having a brilliant day today.

MrsFlorrick · 12/03/2014 18:57

Hellie ShockShockGrin
Wow. NSV galore. No way could I resist a chocolate factory Confused and costa! Holy crap you're stroooooong willed!

Kitchen closed. Dinner was nice.
DC clean and ready for bed. I'm contemplating bad parenting and letting them have iPads while I do my JM workout. Blush

almostthereagain · 12/03/2014 19:57

Go forrit Mrs F they'll never remember & will love you for it nowGrin
Just wow Hellie megrim & bean Smile you're strooong, as Miss JM would sayGrin

PrimalLass · 12/03/2014 20:17

MrsF I flirt with paleo. I believe in it very much but have rubbish willpower. It did make me realise how badly gluten affects me though.

zedzedzed · 12/03/2014 20:22

Kale chips? Kale chips? KALE CHIPS?

Mrs F you are a genius.

I make sweetheart cabbage, blanched then tossed in garlic olive oil with chilli, honey, sea-salt and mixed seeds...it's amazing. But...putting kale in the oven to go crispy? Wow. How many cals do you reckon per 100g or do you have a quantity recipe so I can work it out please?

I'm very excited about the kale, can you tell?

Who went to Mr Wonka's on a fast day? Hellie? You're truly mental. You deserve a chocolate medal.

I sat in a chip shop with a friend waiting for a bus today and, despite there being an enormous bag in front of me and a whole shop full of greasy-delicious battered things, I only had 10 small borrow-chips and a sniff of a sausage. That's some sort of semi-kinky-NSV I think.

Also bought a new bra...with a 34 back down from a 38 at Xmas, I've not tried it on yet but am hopeful as all my 36s are massive (and the bag of gorgeous 32s in storage are a LONG way off coming out to play).

Megrim WOO-HOO? Have no idea what the feck a superdry shirt is, but being unrecognisable and not wincing at yourself is pretty immense. Grin

FD tomorrow, after roast chicken dinner tonight, think I'll do some sort of cheats chicken risotto with lower cal stock masses of veg and a mahoosive salad.

On Friday it will be Kale Chip Day.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/03/2014 20:47

Lots of halo-polishing NSVs: Well done Hellie, Megrim, Zed
and an SV: great progress Bean
Grin

Zero-Calorie Foods don't exist
Every food contains more calories than your body uses to digest it.

BUT water is zero-cal, so drink lots !

Megrim · 12/03/2014 21:03

zed you is sooo not down wiv the kids, innit.

Either that or you don't have teenagers (I know you don't have teenagers, once you do you'll find that they worship at the temple of Hollister and Abercrombie & Fitch and Superdry, and you'll worship at the temple of cashpoint).

But hey, 34" bras? That's definitely a BIG woohoo.

Eatriskier · 12/03/2014 21:10

Here is my perfect hot choc recipe:

  • Take around 17g of decent dark chocolate and grate/break up small.
  • put around 200ml of whichever milk is your poison in a pan and start to bring to the boil
  • boil the kettle, add a small amount of water to choc and whisk into paste
  • realise there was parsley in your pan before you added milk
  • give in and just add parsley and milk to the choc paste mixture
  • be thankful the parsley isn't adding anything flavour wise
zedzedzed · 12/03/2014 21:23

Oy meg Hac-tu-ally I DO have a teen so prrrrrp (stepdaughter, almost 17...and Crombie and Hollister are soooo over in this house!) Forever 21 is the favourite right now, and horribly prim posh looking 'outfits' wtf? We looked proper slutty in the 90s comparatively.
Still none the wiser re Superdry, will Google privately to avoid the mockery of meg in future. Grin

eat tee-hee, what a fud! (Scottish for sillybilly) if only it had been mint or at least chilli. Poor you though, hope it wasn't a cup of 'end of a long hard day reward chocolate', as that's a bit less funny.

MrsFlorrick · 12/03/2014 22:03

Zed. 100g of kale chips is about 58cals. Grin
